Fencing was for royalty. Hence fancy outfits. Fencing actually isn't ever used for real combat. It's just for something for rich to do. They didn't wear dresses or anything too fancy when fencing. They only posed in pictures with their rapiers. Which by the way are inefficient little pencil dicks that would kill no one ever in war.

Pirates didn't look fancy at all. They basically looked like your typical hobos, but because of pirate trops they get a fancy outfit in the game. People still do play the game outside Saalus though, so even if you find them meaningless, there are those who enjoy it.

The revamp is a a big step towards improving the game, and no one is saying they shouldn't make new content.
But any step forward is good, you can just come back when they release the content you want.

The funny thing with attack speed is that it's not as strictly ping dependent as you think it is.
There are many factors affecting it, I don't know what exactly. I have 600-800ms average ping to the test server and sometimes I'm attacking like once a second, then other times when the mob is in a specific position I'm attacking 4 times a second even though my ping never goes under 0.400, which means it can't be strictly related to ping. There must be a sweet spot where animation delay and connection delay syncs up or whatever.
