Honestly, having Goro murder people in cold blood was a little much, even for Atlus. Persona has always focused on teen characters who do ridiculous shit but while I understand Goros motivations and reasons behind doing, I don't understand why they wrote that in. It'd make more sense to simply have him be a wild card using his powers the wrong way because he had no support system or bonds rather than having him to basically all the dirty work for maximum angst and evil points. He's a fucked up kid but no way could he be that good of a killer even with his police ties.

For me, even months after playing, I feel incredibly sad thinking that of all the villains in p5 who lived to atone because the game really pushed that whole "death is cheap escape" message. It's arguably a bit much, true, but I can see why they went for that approach. He's basically an example of someone in a similar situation like the Phantom Thieves, but who, instead of eventually finding the support and help he needed to get out of his situation like they did, made a poor decision as a result of being a kid driven by resentment and landed himself in a situation he couldn't get out of without either being killed or having to commit atrocities to keep going instead.

He's basically an example of the worst-case scenario for the subject matter the game covers - someone who, because of a situation he can't do anything about on his own and no positive influences, ends up going down the same path as his abusers when given the means to do something.

There's another moment that stuck out to me while going through the leadup to Niijima Palace again. When he's discussing his request to change Sae's heart with the PT on 10/28, Yusuke asks him "Though you're fixated on justice, you'd dirty your own hands if it's for the sake of justice?" (正義にこだわるのに、正義の為なら手を汚すというのか?) - instead of answering right away, he looks down, and then answers with "For the sake of determining the truth, it's unavoidable" (真相を突き止めるためには仕方ない). In context, it's about working with the PT to reform Sae, but considering his reaction and how he slips up about his real motivation in the same scene, it stands out a bit.

Shidou's a politician. For someone like him, his reputation is practically vital, and something as significant as being outed as the mastermind behind the recent chain of unexplained incidents and the mental shutdowns (and possibly as making his biological son do all that) would completely ruin him.

Besides, this is someone who was completely okay with taking the risk of possibly dying from taking a hopefully-temporary suicide pill just to prevent the PT from changing his heart. Killing him wouldn't have accomplished anything (and depending on when/how it happened, might've even led to him being martyrized, which is probably the last thing Goro would've wanted).

That's just so dark and depressing and true to life, I would never think atlus would go balls out that way. I'm not sure, honestly. On one hand, we know that at least some part of him always wanted to be acknowledged and loved by his father, since Shidou already exploited that previously. Despite the events in Shidou's palace, I don't think that part's changed, and I could see that leading to part of him wanting to interact with him again despite everything now that Shidou's a changed man (and technically even hid Goro's involvement in his plans during his confession).

On the other, after finding out that the same man he's resented for most of his life for ruining his life from the get-go and that he wanted to get revenge against used him all along and planned to kill him once he served his purpose, I wouldn't be surprised if he hated him too much despite his change of heart to be willing to rekindle their relationship either.

Some of that probably comes from the story drawing more from real life than the past entries did (most of the story arcs have some connection to real-life events in recent times, and a lot of the more personal conflicts for each character are more grounded than usual too). There's supernatural elements to them in the game, of course, but it still leads to a lot of them feeling more believable than usual, especially if you're familiar with similar subject matters IRL. Goro's arc in particular is extreme, but the basic elements (bastard child, orphan whose father abandoned him for being a threat to his reputation and whose mother killed herself, desperate enough for love that he fixates over doing everything he can to make himself into someone people would need and depend on) are something that actually happens, and even the more extreme parts (turning to dangerous/unlawful methods for the sake of getting back at the person who ruined his life from the start, getting into a situation where he's either manipulated into committing atrocities or killed as a result, the way it all affects his personality) are at least somewhat grounded in reality too.

I'm glad it's actually possible to discuss the game's story here, even if there's a lot of shitposting too. I stopped engaging with non-anon fandom discussion years ago because people got increasingly batshit about opinions and trying to discuss things instead of just immediately condemning every story element that isn't perfect and pure according to some arbitrary morality barometer.

His actual behavior during that part gets explained in the talkshow after the third boss in Shidou Palace, the anime cutscene's inconsistent with the surrounding scenes and probably the result of it being made before they fully finalized the story (there's similar consistency problems in a few other anime cutscenes).
