This is my first 4X game, but I'm getting pretty good at it. Emperor difficulty feels pretty right at the moment, but there have been no victories on that level as of yet.

The main problem as I increase the difficulty is just that I feel like I can't compete with the AI's militarily until about Renaissance. They just always have way more and better units than me as well as having tons of cities and population. It feels like I have to be a turtling, diplomatic little bitchboy up until I can really bring my cities to a point where I outproduce them. Am I doing something wrong, or is that just the way the game works?

No, having their rights set to full just lowers the chance of the AI revolt happening pretty dramatically. It can still happen, but it's a lot less likely. The only way to guarantee that it's never a problem is to never build synths.

Genetics should have gone into have uprisings against your genetically altered pops by base pops, or an FE appearing to stop you 'tampering with nature', or focused on the whole weaponised xenomorph thing and have your scientists accidentally produce some super-organism that starts to overrun your planets.

So many directions they could have taken it.

Even 40k directions where your gene warriors decide that, since they're superior to your regular pops, they should be the ones running the show.

I'm trying to come up with a brawler battleship that gets up, close and personal while the other battleships hammer the shields away.

Any suggestions how to do this? This is what I now have. It's been working alright so far, but I've been thinking of doing away with the shields altogether to make this ship more expendable and cheaper. Rest of my fleet is focused on having a balance of shield and armor, so I figured maybe my frontline battleship would benefit from being armor focused entirely since enemy's arsenal would be focused on destroying shields.

I found these to work best for me, since there are just enough empires for the mid game to be interesting and there's constant wars going on. I alternate between hyderdrive and warp. Warp for a less strategic and laid back/random game.

I have 800+ naval capacity, but the tradition that gives you 20% of your vassals' capacity gave me an extra 200 recently, I doubt I'm going to use it any time soon. There will be a lower house (The Union Parliament) that gets elected every 5 years (on years ending on 0 and 5). Whoever has the Majority (and there might be coalition) forms the policy.

There will be a upper house consisting of "Senators for life". The Senate Will consist of 10 sentators from earth (the five major powers of Earth), plus 1 from any colony more then 5 million people. If a colony reaches 100 million people, they get 2 senators.

In addition, the political parties using a formula get to appoint senators based on there percentage of seats in the lower house. (20% = one seat, and I hold the remainder so for example, a party with 5% of the seats will get a senate seat every 4 years).

One seat in the lower house is created for every 4 million people. Census happens every 10 years (on years ending in zero). each planet has there own vote for their seats. (So there a earth election, mars election, and so on).

Not really. You can kind of do it if your goal is exclusively roleplaying, but it's not competitive at all since you don't get the needed techs/resources until late in the game and by then you'll have had to build wide just to survive.

Space stations are your friend. An invading enemy will usually go after your worlds. So stick a fort with subspace snare somewhere in the system.

To expand without violating the max planet cap. In my game I have 16 planets with 84 others in sectors. They provide food, research and 0-75% minerals and energy. The best thing about them is they are pretty much auto pilot mode. Also, in the very late game, you can replace all your main planets to produce only energy and minerals, while sectors provide you with food and research.

As someone who has over 400 corvettes and destroyers in a game I'm currently playing, the short answer is yes. Neutron torp corvettes that are as cheap as possible is nice. The torpedoes shit on shields and do a lot of damage otherwise as well, so having 200 corvettes with those will wreck shit up. Also, battleships of the enemy fleets tend to focus fire on the corvettes and most shots are misses so all those shots they miss are shots they would hit your battleships with.

I play kind of a roleplayish game usually so I use a low difficulty and it doesn't have those glaring problems with fleets. In my current game, I can see the AI has fleets that I would never have with the amount of pops/planets they have, but it's not ridiculously stupid amount of ships that they have, but noticeable.

Hyperspace only is the comfiest game mod because, as you state, you can create bottlenecks and turtle.

Wormholes are utter shit, because you need to constantly build wormhole stations to move your ships about, and it massively curtails early-game exploration, which with the new ascendance mechanics, can give you massive research boosts from exploration via the discovery tree.

It's also more vulnerable to being cut off, the AI killing some of your wormhole stations whilst your fleet is fighting in a far-off system can suddenly leave them stranded until you can rush out and build more with your vulnerable construction ships, whilst the enemy raiders destroy your orbital infrastructure. Wormhole stations aren't robust, a couple of corvettes can pop one in a few minutes, which means you either need to spam loads of them in each system for redundancy (which adds cost) or even worse, alocate each one it's own bodyguard military station, which is only worth it if you're fighting on multiple fronts.

Warp is good too, gives you ultimate freedom to just go where ever you like, and although it's described as slow, I've never really encountered any issues with it, the AI will occassionally catch you with your pants down if you're fighting on multiple fronts, but the time it takes them to do significant damage relative to how long it takes you to warp travel (especially given that Warp Drive III can be got relatively early in the tech tree) doesn't allow them to do anything catastrophic.

I actually like that. It makes FE's even more dangerous if you haven't got jump tech yet, and makes the tech itself seem like a more decisive innovation.

Compared to Warp Drive III, jump drives aren't much of a big deal, they're faster etc but not massively except over large distances, which rarely happens.

But in a hyperspace game? Suddenly you can run rings around your enemies and they can't do shit except batter their fleets into your fortress systems as you jump into their core worlds, burn their cities and steal all their delicious ayy women.

Habitats would be simple enough due to only needing Voidborne but Dysons and Ringworlds require multiple ascension points spent in a specific category.

Should be a simple enough thing for Paradox to address. Personally, I would remove the "Requires x amount of ascension points spent" requirement most of them have and add another time-lock to them, like completing 1 tech with say, 15k base research points, from each group.

Some enemies with skulls can't be taken out with 40K or 80k fleet power but depending on fleet configuration and shit you'll want to play it safe.

I was suggesting possible events and storylines in existing fiction that could be worked with, not rewards.

Corvette spamming isnt really that viable when the AI starts rolling out better weapons with better accuracy. They're more suited towards evasion and harrasing, not actually dealing damage.

Recently I started mixing in different sizes of ships with different, specialized classes (general laser ship for fodder/damage, torpedo/missile boats, point defense shields, autogun boats ect) and it really worked out. I have a solid counter to most of what the AI dishes out.

All it really takes is spending more time in the ship designer and actually caring about components, but it makes it really easy to curbstomp your neighbors earlier.
