This is Sonic's world via LW, one thing Gamexplain pointed out is that in the first level one of the trees in in the background was straight up one of the weird cube trees from LWs cutscenes with Amy.
One other thing some people have pointed out is that this is the first game to take place on a modern representation of Sonic's planet since maybe Unleashed, Gens was just Sonic visiting area's from the past, Colors was Sonic in space, and LW was Sonic on the Lost Hex.

I like Colors, but I'll certainly agree that the Wisps were not executed well, to the point that I wish they WOULD be executed.

See, they're meant to, in Iizuka's eyes, serve as the equivalent to Mario's power ups. They were meant to enhance the gameplay and spice things up, but here's the thing: The Wisps are NOT power ups at all, at least not in the traditional sense.

Let's take Mario's most basic power up (Super Mushroom aside), the Fire Flower and compare it to the first Wisp we ever see: the Laser Cyan. The Fire Flower gives Mario the ability to shoot fire from his hands. This is in ADDITION to the moves that he already had at his disposal: running, jumping, etc.

Now, let's look at the Cyan Laser Wisp: As soon at it's used, Sonic transforms into the laser. It does its thing, interacting with its special diodes and then dissipates. Here, the Wisp does not add to Sonic's existing moveset like the Bubble Shield, or the Electric Shield. It replaces it.

Sonic goes away, the Wisp does its thing, Sonic comes back. This is not what a power up is. All the Wisps do is replace Sonic for a few seconds and have you play as something else. If you like that, fine, but the more Wisps we have, the less we get to play as Sonic proper.

Rol is far from comedy-based, the game wants to be taken seriously so bad just like Synergy, the main differences between these two builds is that Synergy has an extreme focus on co-op with the whip which the final game dropped in favor of making it easier to play by yourself which everyone was going to do anyway, even releasing it on the only system where local co-op is still a thing wouldn't have helped
