Seems to me the inverse is true. If there are changes people don't like, they will behave rashly. Do close to the expansion release could actually blow up, while giving a few months to let things stew, players give feedback, and calm down from changes they don't like.

They're two different data centers, and then each is a different server. You can do everything with people on your server, lots of things with people in your data center, and nothing with those outside of your data center.
If you ever change servers you are free to move between data centers.
Right now, both Primal and Aether are in the same place (Montreal), so you won't see a difference in ping.

Balmung is the most populated server, yeah. You'll have to transfer since it never opens.
Gilgamesh, is a good alternative if you want to queue with your Balmung friends. You might have to wait until late night to get in though.
Make your character and save the appearance data so you can hop on a server when you see it open.

Also you have to wait three days to transfer a character.

Oh, you can always log onto a server once you've got a character there. Even on Balmung you'll hit a login queue, but it's like fake or someshit since you can just cancel and select the character again to skip it.
I'm not really sure what server populations look like outside of those top two anymore, sorry anon.

BLMs is great, honestly doing 50-sync'd content makes me wonder why I ever liked playing BLM back then to begin with.

NIN definitely got off the best, freeing up a mudra a minute feels a lot nicer and having to actually manually refresh it in 50 sync'd content feels awful.

SMN was boring as fuck before and Dreadwyrm actually makes you more powerful and gives you more of a feeling of a real rotation so it's nice.

I don't really play DRG or MNK so I can't comment on them.
