ED is indeed playable. Whether or not it's worth playing for more than a few hours after each patch is a different story, however.

I found it pretty hilarious how they're begging to remain in the spotlight in the latest ATV.

Odds are they're trying to make spectrum some kind of social media network

Launcher/Patcher, forum (soon to be rip), Spectrum, hosting. That kind of junk.

Spectrum is a joke, it could've had some relevancy 4 years ago, but not these days when Discord is a thing.

I can at least appreciate how they called it, though, it's a very fitting name for RSI community.

There is no point in playing Elite. Elite is a sociology project run by the National Institute of Mental Health in the UK through a minor gaming company called Frontier Development. I'm blaming Ben for this. The whole "Drake is the pirate brand so it doesn't have featues that other ships would have" is so incredibly stupid that I can't imagine anyone else coming up with it. Same with the Buccaneer having no ejection seat.

Would give a reason for taking a multifuction ship over a combat ship in to a RES. Combat fights better, Multi can fight longer. High cargo ships would have their own edge.

I'm having a peculiar problem with Elite.
I have 2 railguns, 2 pack hounds, 1 multicannon and 2 plasma on my corvette.
As you can imagine, I kinda need to fire all of them at different times.
Is there a way to do this without switching between fire groups?
>>
>>173329265
Nah. And there likely never will be.

Welcome to the Visionâ„¢ o7o7o7
>>
>>173329637
Right right. Guess I will just learn to hotswitch between 2 groups.
Since we are here shitting on the vision, which weapons should I place on an afk-vette to farm CZs? The setup I posted above is entirely fixed and I run out of ammo for the PHs way too fast.
>>
>>173329265
>>173329637
>>173329739

When multicrew comes out, you'll be able to have your gunner use a "quick slot" which is essentially a third fire button. Probably the only useful feature of multicrew.
>>
>>173329932
But aren't gunners forced to turreted weapons only?
>>
>>173329739
Never tried afk farming before. Obviously turreted energy weapons are probably what you're looking at, pulse are probably your best bet for sustained dps/heat/cap recharge/ammo. I've also heard people mixing in a SLF.

Don't know how well that actually works though. Couldn't hurt anything in you've got the shields for it.

It's gonna be pretty funny after 2.3 hits.

Most people wont interact with multi crew just like with wings. It'll mostly be utilized in PvP. But even some of the PvPers wont like it because it'll disrupt the balance of 1v1 ship combat. And the dads will hate it because it gives gankers, the worst people to inhabit the earth, even more power.

I'm so ready for the salt.

I haven't played E:D for a while

Doesn't wings simply change the color of a wake to show you which one your wingman jumped to/from? Seems like if you're playing halfway paying attention you'd figure it out anyway
>>
>>173331720

Elite's instancing system is downright fucked and Wings prioritizes your wingmates so you are more likely to be paired in instances with them. Multicrew uses the code for wings and butchers it a bit so they can use it, therefore, multicrew and wings are incompatible.

A basic multi-system play area with cargo missions (which can literally just be placeholder checkpoints in open space for testing before planets/stations exist) is required to even begin balancing, but they're trying anyway for some reason. Without the basic Privateer formula in place, there aren't enough things to be good at (even in a pure combat playstyle: ability to protect escorts, intercept ships and actually take people's stuff for profit are all possible ship strengths worth balancing around) to know whether things need fixing.

Everything about SC development seems to be about doing things in a way that requires redoing them later.

they point up to land, they're VTOL engines for landing and Primary drive engines the rest of the time.

The front ones at least should be raised a bit to give the chin gun clearance, the midships ones are fine.

I admit I just think they are so low that it's as if they scraped the ground (it's silly even for a base-bound ship). but I'll keep saying they look out of place, not fitting Aegis design. Even the VTOL engine themselves are streamlined but it all break with the nacelles that should be part of the main-frame an not block the turrets.

Something have gone wrong when you are thinking of shooting your own nacelle so the ship look alright

along with pict >>173339183 I meant to add that the use of VTOL engine aren't even respected anymore.

The Freelancer dropped it, the Cutlass dropped it, the Constellation never had ones, the Caterpillar never had similar front engine, they are minimalist on the Starfarer, BanuMM don't see to care, same for the Polaris
And let's not talk about the Hull series (because yes they are supposed to land on planet)

You could erase the VTOL engine from the Retaliator entirely, add thruster aperture where the nacelles were, and it would lose nothing. Actually it would really start looking a space-B1 bomber meant for speed, stealth and destruction.

Enough said
>>
>>173339935
Constellation has big ol' lift fans
>>
>>173340129
Which only work in atmosphere.
But apart from that, the anon you're replying to is right. Even a giant box like the Starfarer manages to somehow float on the landing pads, which have gravity, using only the maneuvering thrusters. A dedicated VTOL assmebly like on the Retaliator is unnecessary.
>>
>>173340306
Its not a dedicated Vtol assembly, Its 6 of 8 main engines, on articulated mounts. they tilt up when landing. For VTOL.
>>
>>173340909
Here's an idea: Remove the thrusters that do nothing except block the turrets field of fire and make the main thrusters more powerful.

Let's be honest, we love some of the ship pseudo realistic rotating thruster but the idea can be abandoned.
If the Carrack/Hull/Starfarer don't have VTOL ASSEMBLY, just drop it for the Retaliator and make it more pleasing aesthetically. It already suffered enough with its internal layout (wasted space meme and all).

Let's talk about the movie "Wing Commander" and what to expect from SQ42
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IEX02907nPY

I saw the movie and... actually if you gave Chris Robert non-shitty design, special effect and more time (or slap him when he ask too much, he is now aware of that) I say it can be solid.

1st: the universe of the movie is surprisingly sound.
- Spaceship jump between star ED style, jumping around some pulsar are dangerous.
- Only way to communicate between system are FTL ship
- Spaceship shield are down on arrival, making surprise attack a must
- then you get shitty submarine warfare, hopefully using SC gameplay will help technobabble

2nd: plot
- the goal is to race against the Kilrathi army going toward Earth
- NAVCOM containing jump-route have self-destruction mechanism which failed starting the movie revealing the position of Earth to the Kilrathi
- classic tropes at play, never hold your breath

3rd: character
the bigger thing that might be shit.
- you've got your Jedi/Pilgrim with supernatural space-intuition
- you've got living cliché character but also simple one
- you've got tension of many kind within the cast
- Kilrathi costume are cheap ass and never get to fear them

4th: design
- PULL OUT YOUR EYES lest you'll see them !!
- that aside, since SC will have (good) design and (hopefully) balanced ship class this won't be a problem.
- Stealth torpedo from the game

tell the dev team that the communities beginning to boil over, the lack of content, lack of updates on the progress of content and lack of acknowledgement of the delay of content and lack of communication regarding the future of content are wearing our patience thin.

I am fanatic, I have given this dream $2000, I have convinced more than a dozen of my friends to back as well, I follow every update, sift for every scrap of information and I am out of patience. A deadline was missed 3 months ago and was not even acknowledged. That deadline was a bold faced lie. A falsehood pushed to buoy up sales. That is dishonest and unacceptable behavior for a project that exists because of the generosity, patience and trust of its contributors.

It's 4 and a half years into the project, getting to the point where we can reasonably expect to start seeing real gameplay, betas, to the point where the average AAA game would start pushing marketing material into media. We who payed for this game to exist know nothing. We haven't had a meaningful update in a year and a half, we haven't heard a word about Squadron 42, the very heart of the game, first real milestone to be placed and supposedly the part that would be relatively easy to make, in 6 months, and all we heard 6 months ago was "sorry it's not ready to be shown, we'll release the preview we promised soon" That was also a lie, If if was even vaguely ready then we would have seen it by now, we haven't.

Tell them to get some content out soon Mr. Ambassador. Tell them they need to deliver, because the true believers are starting to lose faith, and if we are no longer around to defend their failure, explain their faults and justify their delays funding will cease. Forum riots will ensue. Refunds will be demanded, grievances will be publicly aired and explained at great length as only a real participant can.

If they have something to show it needs to be shown, If they do not they need to explain themselves.

It just fucking assumes the year after a game to be the start for the sequel's development, even if it's just 2 guys writing ideas down for the first 3 years.
Like Morrowind, which really started development in 1998, or all the Blizzard games, which were mostly put on the backburner during WoW's glory years.

Besides, Blizzard, EA etc can actually afford scrapping their games and trying again - CIG can't.

They we're spiteful and full of shit, I'm not, I want the project to succeed, and for it to succeed they need to put more effort into maintaining the confidence of the community and less into squeezing every last nickel out of existing backers. They lied to us, knowingly, cynically, to get more money from the Polaris sale. They told us that SQ42 was in a near playable state, if they are still doing animations and AI for it, that was not true, it was not even close to true, it was a fabrication. They Told us that 3.0 would be out by years end and showed us a flashy demo which they claimed was from the in house version of the patch. That was objectively not true, core systems needed to make that work still do not exist.they are still roadblocking us 6 months later, they knew that then. They lied to to us, the 3.0 Demo was an illusion, a glamour held together by hack job coding that looked promising, but was dead end, one time project produced for release in concert with a sale. They told Us they were so close to 3.0 that they were eliminating the 2.7 patch altogetehr and just rolling all its feature into 3.0, now 3.0 has been hald up so long they're rolling 3.0 features into 2.6.

They lied to us, deliberately, to get more money.

Spelling that out is not goonery, its accountability, I do not want to ruin the game for everyone else as they do, I want Chris, Sandi and the marketing department and and their inability to be honest about the state of things to stop propping up false expectations, stop drawing caricatures of gameplay that will never be and wasting dev time on dead end code branches to be used for one off demos that will bump sales, the sales will make money without it. I want them to stop spending excessive time fueling the hype engine and start spending all available time making the fucking game.

We paid for it, the money that pays their salaries, keeps the light on in Austin and LA and Manchester and Frankfurt and Montreal and Darbyshire came from us. They don't owe us any specific format or any specific timeline, they DO owe us a game and they do owe us honesty about it. They promised that, go back and read. That was part of the deal, we hand them funding on a silver platter in exchange for a dream and a promise, They deliver on that promise and they do not lie to us about it's state.

>We have been doing a lot of rewriting of a lot of the AI code and the AI systems in that process things, especially within the animation, start to look a bit broken. These are in some cases, really enormous systems and trying to get them all done at the same time is overwhelming.

a growing fringe.
I always get sick of their shit right before the community at large starts getting sick of their shit, I consider myself a pretty good barometer, and I have a LOT of friends with the game, like nearly 50, and many of them are starting to simmer too.

They're also spending money had over fist. And it's neither $2000+ spenders nor $45 aurora buyers that float the project, its the people in the middle who donate ~$100, and provable lies turn those people away. Would you give more money to people who lie to you? I won't and as I said, I'm a fanatic. Like I said, they have betrayed our trust, and now they are silent because if they bring 3.0 up they will be confront with that truth, if they have nothing to show when they acknowledge the lie there will be a shitstorm. So they better be coming up with a lot of content real fast or they better have a real good reason why and explain it well.

They are already well within the realms of class action lawsuits, financial ruin and bankruptcy, all it will take is the right spark and the project could just die, be sold off to EA to pay legal fallout and be ruined like every other recent game. I don't want that to happen.

All the quests, and events, and objects and triggers were manually placed, activated by scripts and running on the client. There were no gameplay systems there, just level editor stuff. Stuff that leads nowhere in development terms. it was big shiny demo full of nothing that will ever be in the final game. It was an illusion of gameplay not gameplay as it will ever be.

>it was big shiny demo full of nothing that will ever be in the final game.

It has been confirmed that all of the art assets you saw in both demos will be in the final game (Levski, Miles Eckhart, sand nomads, wrecked Javelin, Ursa rover, Drake dragonfly, sandworm). The vehicles were all functioning in-engine as well.
>>
>>173410881
>Can you elaborate on why you think the Gamescom and Homestead demos were not running on internal builds of 3.0?
Okay, so I don't know what he knows and perhaps he's assuming too much, but consider what we've seen in the Gamescom demo, apart from just planets:
1. A system for extensive quest chains that include dialogues, video messages and "twists".
Later on they've stated that the AI system, which was still in prototyping, is also the system used for quests. So you can be pretty sure that this quest was entirely scripted and didn't have a full quest system behind it. I mean, consider the ending and imagine this: We get that "twist" of that bald guy ambushing us, but what if we have like 10 friendly ships on guard above us? Would they see those ships just spawn out of nowhere? Likely. Would the bald guy be able to recognize that he'd be outgunned? Probably not.
2. Requesting and receiving a landing permission. They've later on stated that this is a system that's not actually in. So that was likely just a triggered script.

As for the homestead demo, it was literally just a prettier planet, with a "quest" that required you to go from quest objective, press F, go to next quest objective, and a sand worm that was quite literally (according to the jump point) added in last-minute. Sean Tracy later on actually flew to another planet where he initiated something from Squadron 42. It can be assumed that all of that was entirely single-player.

So overall it's really doubtful that they actually have/had any meaningful gameplay systems in their 3.0 build.
>>
>>173411167
They lied about the state of development.
>Kid
Fuck yourself, that's a direct lack of a point you have there. Those videos you linked as I said, are all handmade, scripted demos that bear no relatin to the actual game systems they are supposed to represent, they are an impression of what chris wants, not anything they could release and people could use becasue they are rigid, non functional scripted sequences, anyone skill in cry engine could take those assets and reproduce those demos.

I am not complaining about the dev time, I am complain that recently the communication regarding the long dev time has been silence or lies. We don't actually know what the state of 3.0 is at all, we have no idea. we know that Chris, 6 months ago threw out an unrealistic date that was bullshit. and He HAD to know it was bullshit. They told us several things were right around the corner that were very clearly months away, and they did all of this at the exact same time that a $750 ship went on sale, perhaps the most anticipated ship of the whole campaign. Everyone had been waiting to see the Polaris ever since the Idris got fat. How can you defend them deciding to lie to us to boost sales? We have given them $140 million dollars, they owe us at the very least honesty.

>>173411290
I am not saying they're bankrupt I'm saying if they take dishonesty, obstruction and silence as acceptable means of dealing with the community they will lose confidence, and with it funding. They run 6 studios, studios cost a lot of money. I'm saying that they endanger the project which is held up by confidence and trust by lying so blatantly.

CIG has a million bleating sheep to defend them, They have thousands of devoted cultists who will forgive them anything and recognize no bad choices. They do not have enough people honestly and rigorously criticizing the business practices and attitudes they are adopting towards the community, and they need to be called out for some of them.
>>
>>173411894
>Later on they've stated that the AI system, which was still in prototyping, is also the system used for quests. So you can be pretty sure that this quest was entirely scripted and didn't have a full quest system behind it.

The Miles Eckhart quest isn't an example of a procedural subsumption quest. They said it will be a scripted affair, and that they'll sprinkle these hand-crafted quests around the world.

Also, if they have a "million bleating sheep and devoted cultists" then they're not going to lose funding because they're silent on something. They're pretty vocal about most things, actually.
>>
>>173411691
The production terms of the funding campaign expired years ago. They gave timeframes for production when they took money, they have missed all those time frames by years, they have produced nothing that could be passed off as what they promised. Anyone who wanted could take them to court, demand their money be returned to them plus legal fees and win. What keeps people from doing that, and what keep some hooknosed bastard from walking with some percentage of the funding pot is backer confidence that EVENTUALLY they will get the game they were promised. People don't cash out because they still think they will get the product. If they lose that confidence they will start cashing out, some kike will smell shekels and it will all be over.

If that slips and they start getting refunds theres a problem, if some clever lawyer sees $15 million to be made in a class action lawsuit things will get ugly and if that lawsuit succeeds, by whatever means, the ride will be over. Lies in business lead to legal repercussions and legal repercussions in our case will murder the project in its crib. There is not other source of funding to be tapped than selling out to a publisher, and the very first thing they will do is replace all the lead devs with their own, profit orient people.
>>
>>173412880
What exactly makes you think that they're open to a class action suit now, rather than when they didn't hit anything of what they said on kickstarter, my mentally damaged friend?

There isn't going to be a suit, and nobody would win one.

They're not even obligated to give refunds at this point.
>>
>>173413032
They lied, in a potentially provable way, to acquire money.

That is illegal.

>implying the landing permission system would be difficult to program
That's the simplest shit in the world, the only reason they said it was scripted is because they don't need it themselves to test everything.
That's a finish, you don't do finish before you added all feature like "how would they act if you were a wanted criminal"

Even the worm would be easy to put in so long as you don't make up a goalpost they never set.
Consider the following :
- The worm get out if lot of energy is emitted
- It destroy stuff out of its sheer mass (easy as hell, it's just a tube)
- It's animation set is fucking easy to program, it have no skeleton, don't move
- Reverse the animation to have it dive again if he take damage

We know you are impatient but stop making up shit, they never lied about how much they did, only when we would get it (and the contract don't oblige them to produce demo, only give 1.0 game with a set of features)
>>
>>173413519
If mine is slipping, others is already gone. >>173413951
You don't understand how class actions work.
Each individual annot get more than they were harmed for, in my case $2160, however the legal counsel gets a percentage of the total pot. $15 million an asspulled number, ~10% of the total "damages", it would likely be a higher percentage but a lower actual value than that. In any case a lot of money.

Minimal stuff :
Earthquake when he goes out = you have to start moving when it happen
basic calculation drive how close to you it happen
Once out, it squirm and look at whoever is at range
Basic AI routine decide when it strike (again that's easy as hell in 2017, half-life 1 did that in 98)
You can only damage it if you shot in its open mouth with a railgun/rocket/other
It pull back, you have to get ready to both avoid it, get clear, and prepare to hit it next
repeat until "0 hp" then you can either make a DED animation or have it pull back definitely because that's what animals do.
If it were the final game : simply retrieving scales and meat chunk could a reward.

it's doable in an afternoon but you likely never see it before 1.0 because we aren't entitled to have it anytime we want and Chris Robert is a perfectionist who will not let it out before it do 10 time more than what I described

Now you can go back chilling for Star Citizen

You have a point, but I can argue that's another problem with procedural generation : you need so many rules to get it right that everything will look average.
Without human guidance an algorithm can't know if a unplanned detail or context ask for rules outside normal parameters.

Star Citizen will have the same problem (outside of made-made quest) but their "3 twist" design sound very interesting. I don't remember another game who generate mission that generate twist. (outside of an handful of indy game)

>>173444283
The Vaandul are already extremely Cylon like, It would be a waste to make another one.
If the BanuMM is any indication I think their design is an archetype but I can put the finger on how to describe it.
I don't see them have horn/dagger-like wing in any case.

If they kept the idea : most of their weapon will be hidden and deploy so unlike most ship their design should be very smooth

Devil's advocate here, the effect was increased heat as you got closer. The overheat animation would play and you'd blow up as if you were too close to a star.

It wasn't a good effect, they disabled it and hinted they might add a cool deadly effect later. Obviously, they never will.
>>
>>173463460
>>173463868

You hit an exclusion zone where canonically your ship's safety protocols won't let you fly any closer. In practice it's like an invisible wall you can't push past.

Black holes used to overheat you like a star does. Now only Sagittarius A* still does.

The polar jets coming off white dwarves and neutron stars will tear your ship to pieces if you droop out of frame shift inside them, though.
>>
>>173464265

Black holes are actually pretty fucking harmless provided you don't cross a tidal limit or the event horizon, and the bigger they are the less likely they have any dangerous tidal forces outside their event horizon at all.

It's easy to do hidden weapon that deploy without being Zorgon Peterson : Don't make fucking triangle. The BanuMM isn't one.
Also big difference between generic trapdoor that all look alike and having entire part of the ship to become the turret (which is what seem to be planned for BMM front gun according to a pict I couldn't find)

>>173449008
e.g :You do a fetch/kill this mission, once you accomplished the objective, you have chance of another one appearing "You killed my father! Prepare to die!" or "It was a trap!" up to 3 levels.
Or less of a twist :
You killed a pirate and looted their ship, you find the position of their main base, and there you might find their boss.

But what if you WANT to have the player jump at the nick of overheating (for added fun)? You need exemption that are context driven it can work in 70% of the case and fail critically in the few one you didn't see coming.
Made worse that ED is built so you stack/farm mission and do them as quickly as possible "to be over with it" (and life I suspect)

Kiddding. Fighting is kinda fun, you can test out different combinations of guns on different ships. The most fun you will have in this game. Otherwise, it's just the grind.

What are you flying?

Horizons or no? Base assault, skimmer destruction and scan missions are still stackable for a few more days and your ship doesn't matter since each can be done from either an SRV or a Sidewinder loaded with dumbfire racks.

Nobody really does Powerplay for fun or RP purposes. It's is mostly just a way to get the specialized modules. Especially the prismatic shields, imperial hammer railguns and pack hound missiles.

Horizons surface missions tend to pay very well when you've built up to allied with the local factions. Plus the buggy is pretty fun to drive.

The LN is a slight step above a starter and is in fact totally viable, you can and people do kill SH and Sabres with aurora LNs, you need to be a decent pilot but it can be done.

Besdies you wont be using you aurora to hunt and fight wallet warriors, you'll be using it to fight NPCs and run missions until you can afford something better. Its the EL CHEAPO starter fighter. Hinda slow but its punches above its weight class, has a serious missiles mount, has good shields and is physically durable. LN is one of the small handful of actual good starting options.

My starter recommendations for people who want to start above the base but don't want to spend much money are as follows. These being the cheapest ships that will do the job well. Im not including reliants until we see more of them, right now they're a mess.

Combat: Aurora LN
Cargo: Aurora CL, Hull A
Multirole/Piracy: Avenger Titan
Exploration/Recon: 315P
Bounty Hunting: Avenger Stalker
Fleet Support: Argo (Technically not a ship, but if you have one and want to crew a cap ship the owner is probably more likely to want you)

These recommendations are not made so babby cant compete in arena commander. They're made so you have the game and a functional ship to use in the role you want to play. The entire game is not arena deathmatch, AC is the tiniest corner of SC and everyone thinking and demanding balance changes in the context of Arena commander is doing the game a disservice in the long run.

So how's the Bucc /scg/? I've spent years with a mustang alpha, and I think I'll either splurge on a CCU to the Cutlass Black or to the Bucc (not least as that can CCU to a Freelancer, which I would like to try).. Atlernatively I could outright buy either with 6mo insurance, and CCU the alpha to a dragonfly (and, perhaps later, to a mustang delta or M50 when they're next on sale). That way I also get the larger hanger.

Any thoughts? Bucc actually competitive in combat? Reworked Cutlass good?

DON'T BUY THE BUCCANEER

Only a literal retard would buy that POS. It has amazing weapons, and maneuverability unmatched by equally armed ships, but it's armor is made of foil, and the kicker... NO EJECTION SEAT

Why would you ever fly a ship that 1) dies quickly, and 2) has no ejection seat? Get a Sabre when they're available. Decently maneuverable with good weaponry. The Drake meme is fucking stupid.

It's objectively a bad ship. By design, you're risking more in the Bucc than you are in Sabre or Superhornet, or really any other ship. When ships can turn on a dime with 6DOF, maneuverability means less, which is the Buccaneers primary advantage. Putting yourself in the position of going through a 12 second animation to escape death is stupid. A volley or two from an equally armed ship will gank you almost instantly, but that issue is less of a problem when you aren't a Buccaneer.

It's not bad, it just has a different role. The Bucc is the tip of the spear, SH and Sabre are the cutting edge of the spear. They are all equally as bad when used for the wrong thing.

You would not use a Bucc for frontline defense. You would use it as an interdictor or interceptor due to it's speed and smaller signature. Comparing a Bucc to a SH or Sabre straight up isn't fair. A better comparison is that it's a M50 with teeth. It trades a little speed for a significant increase in firepower and about the same armor.

>>
>>173509124
No that anon, but obviously it doesn't save you 100% of the time. However, depending on the type of the engagement, the primary goal is taking out ships/asset denial, not slaughtering whoever is inside. Most people probably wouldn't stop and turn around to find an ejected pilot when they could be continuing the fight or moving on to their next objective.
>>
>>173509473
>Most people probably wouldn't stop and turn around to find an ejected pilot when they could be continuing the fight or moving on to their next objective.

Nothing to do with the enemy killing you while ejected, you have a good chance of just straight up dying because nobody finds you unless you're in carebear space

I found something interesting looking at base HP levels for each ship.
http://starcitizendb.com/

All the ships that are supposed to be reworked have 1hp for each part of debris. The newer ships and ships that are not being reworked don't have those entries. All that extra shit is probably why those ships are such a mess.

Also, the hp makes no sense. The Bucc has more body hp than a hornet, but less than a sabre. I presume those hp levels are calculated per area of the ship hit, i.e. your body hp doesn't matter if you are hit in a specific component.
>>
>>173510075
>Also, the hp makes no sense. The Bucc has more body hp than a hornet, but less than a sabre. I presume those hp levels are calculated per area of the ship hit, i.e. your body hp doesn't matter if you are hit in a specific component.

They're not calculated, its from the XMLs.

Don't quite get what you mean by that last part, though.
>>
>>173510485
I meant I don't know if the total hp for the ship is used as a base, or just the specific component's hp, or a combination of the body and component hp, or how it's done. Basically how to draw a meaningful distinction out of those numbers.

Ships right now have HP assigned to different parts like the nose, body, cockpit etc and HP assigned to individual components like thrusters.

Doing enough damage to certain parts like the nose, cockpit or body will count as a kill and the ship will explode. Some parts are non-vital like wings or tail.

Most of its going away eventually but if a ship has X HP for its body, do that amount of damage to it and you die.

It's exactly what he describes in the post. You can get up and walk around your ship, though I'm sure it'll be only your cockpit, and some areas of stations. So essentially you'll be able to dock and walk around your cockpit, and then hit a button to teleport to cookie-cutter rooms where NPCs stand that will function basically like the mission board, only now you have to walk to different NPCs that stand at different corners of said cookie-cutter rooms.

Meh, if they ever start salvaging the game it could at least introduce variety.

I do wonder what they'd find to do on your own ship and stations and what the "dads" will ask to remove any sort of "instant gratification" (aka "fun") from it.

No fucking shit. This whole project has been a textbook example of the sunken cost fallacy for nearly two years now.
They should have switched to a different engine as soon as they made the tech preview we're still stuck on because it perfectly points out why CryEngine is the worst possible choice they could have made, but I guess they decided taking a step back would be worse than marching on. 18 months later, we can see how wrong they were.

desu Astroneer is pretty fun but it sort of suffers from the No Man's Sky syndrome (albeit to a lesser extet) in the sense that once you built a large base and got all the modules then you can uninstall the game and forget about it because your only other option is flying to another planet and do the same shit all over again.
>>
>>173547071
What the fuck are you on? You fucking idiot netcode and Cryengine have fuckall to do with each other.
CIG is fabricating a way for cloud storage to be their server and dynamically scale everything for them. Thats what they're working hard on to get working, Cryengine is just how it looks and runs client side you shit gibbon.
>>
>>173538390
>>173538880
Yeah why not. It's nothing what changes the gameplay.

In my opinion they should have fixed the fucking external camera control already. It's pain in the ass to adjust. While they are at it, why not add a proper 3rd person mode in as well. But that goes against the original Vision so I understand this might be impossible.

But something which could be fun in the future...I wouldn't wait anything fun.

>Cryengine is just how it looks and runs client side you shit gibbon.
Holy fuck never ever try discussing anything technical again because you are obviously entirely clueless about it.
CryEngine, just like any other modern game engine, provides networking features to simplify making multiplayer games. But the way this engine handles things under the hood is absolutely not adapted to large-scale, MMO-type games because for a start, everyone gets everyone else's position and state permanently, even when they're really fucking far, which works fine for a simple 16-players game on a smallish map, but fucking horrible when you have hundreds of players over several star systems. There's also some shit regarding variables being sent to and from the server, right now way too much data is transitting which is why they're working on serialized variables to requrie less traffic overall, and the biggest meme of all this is how CryEngine handles lag by freezing the whole game whenever there's the slightst desync, which is part of the reason the game runs like garbage even on high end rigs.
So right now they're wasting time rewriting al of the networking part of CryEngine because Chris Roberts is a stubborn faggot.

Yes, thankfully I already covered the fact that I think fixed aiming itself is broken, like I said.
>>
>>173598531
with certain guns it is. NN14's are the least effected. size 2 and 3 ballistic cannons are worthless. energy repeaters and cannons don't get enough power from the Bucc to be worth more than 1 or 2 kills. pyroburst and c788 straight up don't hit. sledge mass drivers are broken in the store.

literally, the only functioning online loadout for a Bucc that kills in a reasonable time is 4x NN14 and 2x NN13. with the gimbals locked, add one bubble more lead online. that's the best I've found, by a lot. gimbal users just drop the NN13s to save power.

Why would you try to duplicate the retarded npcs? Just slow down and they will turn in front of you.

The 350r pirates will fly out about 2km and try to BnZ you. Just slow down when they are approaching and boost after them when they try to range you. They will always turn away from your heading, so use that to herd them. Work them to the edge of the map for an easy cheese kill when they avoid the map edge.

Gladius will try to turn fight you, plus it's nose gun covers a huge front arc. Slow down to <90m/s, wait for the Gladius to turn into you a good time to start your move is when he starts shooting., and either pitch up while strafing down or yaw while side strafing, depending on your ship. Keep your rotation vector on the Gladius' pitch axis and turn a smaller circle to get inside him. You will go about 2 turns before he gives up and boosts away. Just wait and do it over again. This will work in any ship, even an Aurora. The trick is to keep your forward speed under what you need for a maximum carve turn with ifcs.

All the npcs are one trick ponies. Pretty easy once you see the pattern for each ship, and they really struggle with constant speed changes.

I reinstalled SC after a year to play around with a buccaneer and I suck at Vanduul Swarm way more than I remember. Should I replace the stock guns on the bucc, or is my aim just that bad? Feels like I make contact often enough with my shots, but nothing like >>173599391

if you are online, it's hopeless. try single player and see if you still suck. the stock loadout is decent enough.

Stock loadout is good enough to shred vandildos pretty quickly, even online.

You have to aim for the center of 'Dull ships to get a clean kill. Otherwise you are just shooting wings off and not doing jack. You may just be doing trash damage to unimportant parts of their ships.

Serious question: Do Chris and guys have someone(s) who have developed MMOs before in their life?

I hope they understand the need to split the universe into smaller instances etc just like how the other online games are doing it?
>>
>>173645267
It's going to be instanced as fuck, they've said as much

I mean shit it would be hard for computers to handle too many ships this shiny
>>

>I hope they understand the need to split the universe into smaller instances etc just like how the other online games are doing it?

Holy fuck anon, how has this not occured to them

jesus, this ruins everything!

The game up to now needs to be scrapped because they never thought of this!!!
>>
>>173645817
Why is everyone this retarded? You could have 1000 ships, in any given scenario almost all of them would be so far away that you could get away with rendering Freelancer-tier LOD models.
>>
>>173645817
Graphical fidelity is the least problematic of the issues that make instancing neccessary.
>>
>>173645913
Yeah because MMO players don't gather up or anything
>>
>>173646731
Players gathering up wouldn't be an issue in the first place, only ships.

Ships you can hit with pretty hefty LOD changes.
>>
>>173645913
>he thinks players 1) won't try to form mega groups, and 2) that players will be spread out so far that they don't run into eachother enough to warrant instancing like CR has noted

Players will mostly be along the "hotspots". Planets, planetoids, asteroid bases, space stations, and whichever objects purposely stop people in QT. The rest won't have many, comparatively.

kek. most of us know SC is either going to be an incredible success or incredible failure. there won't be anything like any game we have seen before, one way or the other.
>>
>>173646978
>>173647228
And also according to this, they only need 1 point to represent a ship in order to get working mechanics implemented. Why is it taking so long then?

>>
>>173647376

True. But that doesn't get them a steady flow of cash. Flying cubes with hundreds of instanced players operating independently doesn't guarantee a steady influx of cash the way ship porn does.
Hiring three studios worth of different skilled employees means a range of shit gets done albeit very slowly.
>>
>>173647659
What they usually do in games that they put everything together and there are areas which are not even textured yet etc and the game testers need to walk there and see all this untextured shit geometry but they are still testing it. These guys have then in the end walked through the game so many times just when it didn't have any textures at all.

So where is the coarse description of the universe? Planets are spheres for god's sake. I hope they have laid out a some kind of a map by now.
>>
>>173647797
Nothing to do with "cash", its just not something that would have a use, especially not to the public, and they'd be retarded to put it out there.

It's the autistic thing, In game player reporting of events, like EVE, but with actual players in actual ships doing the reporting. The Mako has high end scanning, camera, sensor and transmission gear, its a ship set up to locate, capture and transmit "news" of whatever sort

"Space battle off Yavin IV, Imperial Death Star destroyed by rebel scum! Millions of Imperial service members murdered!" Tune into Imperial Spectrum News for live reporting, commentary from the former Senator of Yavin and more!

"Today high above Endor's forest moon the Freedom fighters of the Rebel alliance struck a mighty and perhaps fatal blow to the Oppressive Imperial Regime! The Emperor is Dead, Darth Vader is missing, Presumed dead in a reported coup attempt. The second Death Star has been destroyed before it was even completed and the Imperial Fleet is scattered to the far corners of the Galaxy!"

>>
>>173649557
No, dad's wouldn't like this, this shisp exists to support EVE esque reporting of Factional pvp battle in which dad ships are going to be vaporized by the score.

"Pirates massacre miners off Terra Prime! Hundreds of local freelance extractors have been killed, robbed, spaced or marooned in this senseless and seemingly unmotivated terrorist attack! Pirates reportedly spammed Expletives and Memes while they carried out the barbaric attack!" Stay with us for an interview with one of the effected miners, "StarDadMinesToFeedMyWifesSon1963"

>>173649213
Note: this will not happen in SC. For important gamer related shit, we have out-of-game stuff like Discord, this place, fagbook, whatever. Orgs will take full advantage of the faster than game travel of information.
>>
>>173650557
>No, dad's wouldn't like this
oh thank god. i was worried. seriously though, a legit version of Big Shot from Cowboy Bebop with live bounties of real players playing on a mfd in the ship needs to happen.
>>
>>173650658
Not that anon, but it could work for SC news websites like INN (is that even still a thing?)
But then again, why the fuck wouldnt you have a larger ship which can actually take a few hits in case you get caught in the crossfire and get btfo or just get fucked up for the fun of it by some trigger happy kid?
>>
>>173650974

Yeah agreed. That would be awesome, but I'm not going to hedge my bets on it. There'll probably only be a few for some important NPC missions.
>>
>>173651104
If they're shooting the news van, you're fucked one way or another. You're either carrying enough firepower to fight free, In which case, no one will believe you are a neutral and you'll be targeted, of you're in a well shielded unarmed ship, and if someones shooting at you they want to shut you up, in which case being unarmed means you're probably fucked. Best to just fly something Obviously non-threatening and Minimalist that you can afford to lose and replace and is small and fast enough to run quickly should the need arise. If someone sees a make, theyre not going to take it for a threat unless they want what they're doing kept quiet, in which case a big camera ship would attract too much attention. Small, quick, discrete and expendable is the right makeup for a news van.
>>
>>173651620
>Small, quick, discrete and expendable
so, an expensive, bulky, slow, bright yellow starter ship?
>>
>>173650974
In game rebroadcast is a confirmed game mechanic, thats literally what the Mako was made to do and has been a promised feature since very early on. To what extent remains up in the air, as does how such things will be delivered, but in the Caterpillar for example there are a whole bunch of TV screens Spectrum is going to be online, mobile and in game and is confirmed to be a multimedia platform, so its not too much of a leap to assume that you'll be able to pull up spectrum channels and threads and chatrooms on in game displays and included with that will be live video. Time will tell obviously, but its not much of a stretch given what we know is planned.
>>
>>173651898
Everything we are flying right now is tiny. The mako is fat for a fighter, but it is still a fighter sized ship and is far faster than say a constellation. The newsvan needs its three seats, Pilot, Cameraman and Broadcaster, and for a three man ship the Reliant is TINY. It also ahs an Excellent canopy for for pilot and cameramans visibility/situational awareness.

MAKO is neither expensive nor slow nor bulky compared to the other ships that might fill the role.
>>
>>173652014
They also have said a number of times that picture in picture rendering within cryengine is a nightmare and incredibly taxing (I don't have the episode number but it came up a lot in early 10 for the chairman episodes when people were asking about watching stuff in their cockpit while travelling). Live in game footage is unlikely not occur unless they've found a way around all the problems they mentioned. I can't speak to streaming rendered video, but spectrum forum shit should be fine.
>>
>>173652470
They literally did it in one of their demos. Had a little Video clip play in the HUD as the lancer in the Proc Planets 1 demo landed at Levski. I think PIP is one of the things the frankfurt guys knew the arcane secrets of. Gotta remember that a lot of the early "Impossibles" were laid out when the studies were just Austin and LA, and Austin and LA have always been the least competent. The difference between a video file and a stream is fairly minimal as far as transmission and rendering is concerned.

Yeah you're right, I forgot about that demo.
Streaming what a large collection of people are doing in another live instance ala org on org conflict doesn't seem like it would be minimal difference though.
>>
>>173653058
Not the anon you replied to but I will take that with a big grain of salt. That demo was scripted, as was the citizencon one, and as such, those can be made just for the demo instead of as a feature to be permanent. I also remember them saying something along the lines of picture in picture being basically impossible in the game, but that was a while ago.

>they did a thing in a heavily scripted and planned tech demo
>>
>>173653549
Actually I take that back. If it's compressed into some sort of video file rather than rendering shit on the fly then it's pretty inconsequential.
>>
>>173653549
not trivializing it, but they are using Amazon tech, and Amazon is spending heavily on Twitch, so it's hard to say what will be available to do, once the game gets that far.
>>
>>173653549
>>173653706
Render PIP may well be, IE your gun has a camera and that cameras feeds its view to a screen on your ships dashboard. This is complicated because it requires the game world to be rendered twice, Once for you and once for you're ships second perspective, the turret camera. They cheat this by just shifting the player view the turret(Superhornet).

Putting a video on a screen isn't PIP though, its playing a non rendered file, not a second environment, but a simple 2D video image, theres no environment to render on your dash that way. It could work for streaming becasue while the streamer is another rendered environment he's not transmitting that to you and you're ships screen/other device, he's capturing video with the ships turret camera and probably a webcam on the broadcast desk and transmitting that non-3d, non environment video data to you, thats what you display, not a second 3d Perspective, but simple video.
>>
>>173654262
Yeah totally agree here. Captured video files and rendering PIP are totally different beasts. The first is almost definitely what happened in that demo that was posted, but I'm not convinced that lumberyard has suddenly cracked the case on something that was apparently so difficult in cryengine they couldn't even fudge an answer on an early 10ftc. That said, I'm not a lumberyard expert so if it turns out I'm completely wrong then that's great.
>>
>>173654639
Lumberyard switch has nothing at all to do with the actually game engine, rendering, or capabilities side of the engine, It's just a better network interface to databases and servers, it doesn't even address the Network rending issues we have now. It's only dealing with how the servers talk to the client and each other and how the servers and clients as a whole connect to each other over the wider internet. The difference between cry engine 3.9 or w/e we were on and lumberyard is all about the Amazon Data Distribution service and how the game interacts with it. CIG parntered with Amazon because Amazon was specifically building a backend server engine for use in MMOs that ran on their derivative of cry engine anyway. The difference between Lumberyard and CE3.whatever does not effect anything in game directly, its all behind the scenes data brokerage. StarNetwork is what will alter the In game data brokerage and that will come with 3.0 the Lumberyard switch has more to do with the Deltapatcher and login authentication.

Yes, that's what Im trying to say, PIP is hard, sticking video into a video displaying panel is not. Playing Video is not PIP, Having a live action turret camera displaying a manipulateable 3d Image(turret view) within another manipulateable 3d Image(Spaceman view) is challenging, displaying a non interactive feed (Video captured by a streamer from his perspective and transmitted as 2d Video) is not. As for the type of video itself the difference between an existing file stream(youtube) and a livestream(Twitch, MAKOCAM) for display purposes is negligible and integrating in game capture and broadcast functionality has been done over and over. In the scheme of all the crazy shit CIG is trying to do Video capture, composure an broadcast is among the least ambitious and challenging.
