All AKs are fucking heavy regardless of their manufacture. Hell, one of the things that makes some AKs "good" over others is having a heavier-built trunnion for that sweet sweet RPK rigidity.

Every single firearm ever made requires regular cleaning. The AK will malfunction more frequently if it is not kept properly lubed or cleaned. This is a fact of life, and if you're one of those hasguns who doesn't clean or oil your rifles then you're legitimately retarded and I want you to pull off your dust cover and look at all the metal shavings in your receiver.

The 416 is alright but IIRC most of the reasons it's being adopted are related to full-auto fire and the ability to actually adjust the gas system for use with suppressors or different types of ammunition (or for overgassing when the gun gets dirty to give more reliable feeding). The piston takes some of the recoil out too IIRC- it's worth noting the AK's fucking xbox-huge bolt carrier/piston combo actually make the recoil a bit worse.

The AR platform is modular, light, and extremely accurate (even shit mil-spec $500 ARs now are shooting near-MOA from the box, while high-end custom AKs struggle to even near 2 MOA). It's also extremely reliable, no matter what slavs say.

ARs *do* require more maintenance over time but in terms of "will the gun still work after being exposed to X" the AR platform is superior to the AK.

AKs are aesthetic as fuck (only A1s, GAU-5s, and block 2 fsps can compare for me personally). AKs also have a bunch of extremely legitimate advantages including needing less maintenance over time, much cheaper to made, simpler to operate and maintain, and being more rugid. It's just that when it comes to jams induced by foreign debris, the AR's nearly sealed operating mechanism basically solves this issue.

The AK is a fine rifle with plenty of good points but it's got a shitty stiff safety lever that makes a shit ton of noise, most don't have any kind of bolt hold open (last round or otherwise), you have to break your firing stance to drop the mag

It's not that the AK's ergos are bad it's just that the AR's ergos are really, really fucking good.

You need a vice, a torque wrench, and potentially some drill bits for cutting steel depending on what sort of front sight base/gas block you're going with to build an AR-15. You also need some gauges and shit to make sure you've got your headspacing right unless you're okay with shooting a gun that might blow up in your fucking hand.

Aside from all the safety stuff the AK is usually just:

It's trivial to build an AR, which makes it really cheap. To completely build a rifle from all parts the most exotic tool you used to need was a torque wrench (~$30) but even now days if you get a handguard like those ALG defense it comes pre-rotationally index so you don't even need one of those. I've built a ton of AR15s, and I love the modularity. I have short 7.5" rifles all the way to 20" rifles and everything in between. In the US it's really cheap now too.

As long as you're buying proper mil-spec components you'll never ever need to check headspace on a AR-15. Headspace is determined by barrel extension to bolt lockup, which is pre-determined by your bolt and barrel, and that should always be to spec (unless you're buying some cheap shit bubba barrel or bolt). Headspace checking is imperative on something like a bolt gun, so freds always will drone on about it, but in the AR15 platform it's a non-issue as long as everything is in spec (any parts from a standard vendor should be).

What I was thinking about was some sort of combined arms operation, i.e. Soviets repel a NATO attack on Caucasus from Turkey and you'd have someone controlling a US or Turkish armored brigade facing a motorifle regiment of Soviet forces, NATO has some A-10s, probably some Mirages and even Viggens maybe, Soviet side has some MiG-21s, MiG-29s and probably a couple of Su-25As for ground support. It would require a CA player for NATO and optionally for Soviets. It would be PVP ops basically, focused on A2G for Blue and on intercepting for Reds.

Steel Beasts as a game is an afterthought. It's mostly meant to 'train' (introduce) new AFV crews to the basics of armoured operations before shoving them into the real thing. IIRC the BMP-2 module was only brought in for the Finnish military.

So they don't need half-baked AI for OPFOR, as long as the four vehicles and 12+ newbies have something to drive and something to drive though, then that's all they need
