Well it worked pretty well. The pigs tend to run fowards and it spread chaos and confusion on enemy lines, which roman formations could exploit

Of course they didn't have specific handlers like in Rome I, and it happened like 4 registered times total, but hey, in a game with Roman Ninjas anything's possible

Not even complaining, the mod I cherish the most for Rome II right now is the one that adds Arcani]

Yes, they reject use of armour and proper weapons completely, they have far better oral lore that describes their history and traditions that they subscribe to. And unlike normal orcs, who pay lip service to Gork and Mork at best, Savage orcs are very religious.

Like everyone else. They have does that get fucked by the biggest alpha in the tribe. Also they get a lot of manpower by raising mutated babies who were left in the forest by parents who didn't have the guts to kill them proper. Beastmen somewhat revere (or just use as tribe mascots) these human-born beastmen as the purest ones, gifted directly by the dark gods. Also some humans mutate into beastmen during their lives due to chaotic "gifts", but they aren't recognized as proper beastmen and treated worse than ungors.

Actually not really, it was a major pain in the ass. It also made fielding elite units early on a pain, since they would inevitably be whittled down and become very hard to replenish. The AI would also have a problem with it. I sometimes still play Medieval 2 and I'm fine with it, but I don't miss it at all whenever I play newer games.

You had to send damaged units back to cities that could train those units, and then retrain them. Retraining recruitment depending on unit pool availability in Medieval 2. The best way to do it was merge most of your units to full strength, send the last unmerged unit of like 20 guys off to get retrained if you want to preserve some of the unit experience, and then train a replacement unit locally.

The way I use manticores is just throwing them at annoying ranged units and artillery without bothering to camp to heal them, then when they die or came close enough I just replace them. Easier to do so with WoC since all units have a one turn build time.

You can disable replenishment altogether if you so wish, with new recruitment being the only way. That + global recruitment is pretty close to the old way with the recruitment times being what they are. This is why mods can fix it is actually a good argument, because you can approximate the way you want it, while still letting the majority have it in the convenient way. The other way around that might not have been so easy.

I suppose, but you'd need to tinker a lot with recruitment timers and availability, because it wasn't as simple as just double the time in older titles, some units were available for recruitment and replenishment all the time, while higher tier units took a lot longer to reappear in the recruitment pool, so its not just the need to move all the way back to your recruitment centre's that matters here, its the fact that even if you do move back, there is no guarantee that there are any knights available for recruitment, as they had a rather slow rate at which they were added to the pool

The Cult of Sigmar does have widespread appeal across the Empire - it's just other faiths also have strong holds in certain areas. Most of the south is more Sigmarite, most of the north generally follows Ulric (though Taal, Myrmidia, and other gods are prominent in various places).

Savage orcs have a different culture and make as little use of metal weapons as possible, preferring the good ol' tech and warpaint that actually does help them resist damage.

Beastmen have traditional sex - there are beastwomen, though they are rarely mentioned. They also sometimes recruit mutants or turnskins, and rescue mutated babes left out in the woods to die (not that they really get a good life).

The last one is in 40k, not WFB. But Slaanesh does think they're pretty much the best souls, and the Prince of Pleasure has had cults infiltrating them for years.

no offense, but have you actually played the earlier titles? its not quite as rigid as army limits there, you can build a stack of 20 Norman Knights over a very long period of time, but they will inevitably waste away in battles, due to the way the old replenishment and recruitment pool system worked

Feels pretty stupid winning the Long Victory at turn 110 or some shit knowing the assrape squad is still arriving. It always leaves the turns that follow a bit pointless, and makes the ending a tad anti-climatic, since you pretty much have to choose when to end.

If the attacker in a TW game fails to win in a certain time frame, the defender automatically wins the battle. I made the mistake of not watching the time, and letting my bombards fire all their ammo which took probably 45 minutes before I looked and realized I had to get a move on. Very few games that go on early access have noticeable success, especially when Steam Greenlight devolved into Asset Flip Bazaar. If nothing else Man'O'War seems to be prepared to be the exception, because the core gameplay is really good.

I just came off a battle where I had nearly two to one odds, and had them trapped between an entire force of cavalry, two cliff faces, and a force of infantry.
I lost my entire army of 1300, where they lost not even 300 units.
Theyve got the best artillery, the best range, and the best infantry in the early mid game. All of their units get max armor.
How the hell do you deal with this? Im asking not just because im furious, but because i want to be able to actually play the game...

You use magic vortexes to exploit the fact they have all high mass and you have to exploit the fact they're immobile. Which means heavy cavalry.

What faction are you playing? I assume Orcs. Focus on monstrous units like Giants and Arachnaroks (note: this will get you rekt in multiplayer because they'll just focus all ranged fire on you, but the AI doesn't do this if you put the monsters behind a normal infantry unit).

Because the game was designed around those major factions in particular. They have special lords and good starting positions, where most minor factions only have regular lords and might not always be in a good place to expand. It's not like in, say, Medieval 2, where there were only the major factions and nothing else, and there was a lot of neutral land in the beginning so things could get carved up any which way. And I think it would be a little boring if there were no minor factions at all, or if even they had to be designed around being playable.

It's easy enough to get a mod though - you can get them for most games with minor factions, and it can make for a fun challenge. I still like to play as Portugal from Empire Total War.

Usually a solid frontline of 4 - 5 battle pilgrims supported by a pair of foot squires, some bowmen and something anti-large to protect the back (coupled with a Grail Reliquae, otherwise it all falls apart ofc). It varies depending on the faction obviously, but it seems that the infantry heavy army does way better than a cavalry heavy one. And I mean 1 - 2 cavalry regiment kind, rest is a mix of high (pilgrims, squires) and low (spear/men-at-arms) cost infantry. You get a sizable army with a really tough frontline thanks to the reliquae and the lore of life, assuming you bring the Fay Footfetishist or a Damsel of life (which you should).

They seem to use the underway to get around obstacles rather than avoid attrition, and I think that marching aboveground is faster than belowground, assuming no mountains or rivers in the way. I don't think they take attrition into consideration when deciding how to travel, just whatever would get them to where they want to go the fastest.

Personally, I find that when playing as Kraka Drak I use the underway far more frequently than I do normally, because otherwise you take frankly disgusting amounts of attrition.

The Otomo and Shimazu have some of the best gunpowder units. The Otomo have access to the Donderbuss cavalry, which are hilariously destructive but also incredibly micro-intensive and liable to kill half your own army if you're not paying attention, and the Portuguese Tercos, who are basically katana samurai with guns.

The Shimazu have the Heavy Gunner, which used to be the most powerful unit in the game and even after being severely nerfed are still one of the best gunpowder units.

It's not like you were ever supposed to have a cavalry-only army for Bretonnia, but yeah, I think they gave the Brets too many flavors of infantry and accidentally made most of them decent or good by mistake.

Also, microing sucks, especially when you can't pause a shitton. Even when you barely pay attention to your infantry and archers, you still will likely lose track of your knights, and they'll get slaughtered (because for some reason they can't last in melee for longer than five seconds). Pegasus knights are a little easier to use because you don't have to circle them around the enemy, and are pretty survivable.

They have Poor Leadership, afaik. It's slightly alleviated by the presence of the reliquae and your lord/hero being nearby. If you manage the rest of your infantry well your bowmen won't get hit that often anyway. The fire arrow bowmen are real fucking treasures when fighting the VCs, and the pox arrows help a lot against stronger infantry like orc big 'uns/black orcs and sometimes dwarfs.

I sometimes like to bring one or two trebuchets. They have solid range and the blessed versions do amazing damage against the undead.

Personally I always bring a pair of bowmen and at least two Men-at-Arms with spears and shields. Hopefully I'll back those up with a pair of grail pilgrims, and maybe add a third or fourth Spearmen-at-Arms in there, maybe a unit of Polearms or Foot Squires if I know there's going to be armor. Reliquae is also a must.

Knights kind of vary depending on what's available. Usually at least two or three Knights-Errant or Knights of the Realm, or perhaps a mix. Grail Knights can be amazing, but haven't had much luck with Questing Knights. Royal Pegasus outstrips the regular Pegasus due to survivability.

The charge bonus tapers off with time, and is negligible after 10 seconds if I remember. It works best if you pull them out before they can get entangled in melee, unless you think the enemy unit will break in those 10 second.

I'm used to it because Medieval 2 made a lot of use of shock cavalry for just about every faction, even if it's a little different in TW:W.

Basically you're supposed to charge, wait a few seconds for them to do all their damage, and then pull them out. This can get tough, especially if they get surrounded, but if you get some practice at it they can more than make up for themselves in kills, and the leadership buff they get when charging will help keep them in the fight even when at ridiculously small numbers.

I don't like Questing Knights because I charge and they don't seem to do anything, but if I leave them alone for a bit they seem to get slaughtered.

Early Qing dynasty in the 17th century would be awesome though. You have these Manchu guys coming out of the woods and basically acting like Mongols, but there are still areas where the Ming Chinese are holding on - and in the south, there are three 'feudaterratories' that survive for a while as vassals, ruled by Ming governors until they rebelled against the Qing. You also have Tawain at the time getting ruled by a pirate lord sympathetic to the Ming, Japan had gotten pushed back from their invasion of Korea but they could get included in a Total War game, the Dutch and Portugeuse are poking around, Russians and Cossacks to the north trying to carve out a chunk of Manchu land for themselves, and there are a shitton of Turkish and Mongol tribes and clans to the west - one of whom actually forms a fairly large empire for a generation or two before they get stomped by the Qing. And that's not even taking into account the wars in Tibet and even into India around the time.

Longbeards are better in every way but they also give a LD buff so you only really need 2 to buff your normal warriors LD more.

Thunderers you only take 2 or 3 of for killing the warboss before he reaches your line. They're generally better at killing shit but not as easy to use as quarellers (on some maps you can't really use them decently at all). Great in you're in a dwarf civil war though.

Explo miners also have a completely different role. If you're just using them as regular miners with auto-fire left on you're using them wrong. If you want to use expo miners properly you have to use tight formations to get the enemy army to clump and then start loosing barrages of explosives when the time is just right.

They're great to have behind your main line of infantry because they can lob grenades right over your dudes heads into the hordes of orcs behind them. They're mostly the ones with the most kills in my army.

Don't always buy the most expensive units though, if you spend the minimum you need to get decent wins you have the most money left over to develop your shit.

Chaos exists in warhammer fantasy because of the instability of magic and the magical portal/shitshow at the poles. Had the vortex fully succeeded I think it might have managed to completely eradicate Chaos from the world if it could siphon off and drain the excess magic that produces it. Before the portals up north and south pole exploded Chaos was, I think, nonexistent of an issue.

Now in 40k Chaos is well and truly 100% unstoppable and, despite chaos ending the world in warhammer fantasy quite frankly 40k chaos is more grimdark than fantasy chaos. Fantasy chaos if you got rid of magic or found that equilibrum (and didn't have warpstones to worry about) you would be utterly free of chaos. In Warhammer 40k the only way to be rid of chaos is to have no emotions, no soul. And unlike a geographic phenomenon of the polar portals in 40k just having psykers develop naturally in a population opens them up to chaos.

So for fantasy I feel like it's just misfortune and literary bad luck that is why Chaos is where it is. A luckier world, old ones who weren't raising latchkey Slann, one where the polar portals didn't explode and Chaos never exists. In 40k you can be a utopian planet and even have a complete quarantine of your planet and yet if you get psykers emerging naturally then GG no RE>

I think regional occupation was a good choice, adds a bit of complexity. That said the whole idea of fun in this game is to be able to fight different races throughout the campaign and i can see regional occupation hindering that in the new world.
We still dont know how they're going to implement factions in the vortex campaign, unlikely but it very well could be that they don't include old world factions at all. With regional occupation thatd leave elves fighting elves and skaven fighting lizards.
If they keep regional occupation for the Combined campaign i'll be happy

Things like bread rations and the circuses kept the people placated, but it did not keep the economy moving. Only much later did the government actually try and grow alternative cities like Trier, but it was much too late. Trier should have become a regional capital much sooner. Station the soldiers there, give them pension'd land along the German border and pacify the tribes. But the military was inherently unreliable by that point.

The roaming armies of the Emperors after the Diocletian reform was an interesting touch in the west. Massive field armies would encamp, take the food from the surrounding area to supplement what shipments they could get and an economy would rise up to help supply that army while they camped out. Would have worked out great too, if peoples property rights were respected and if free labor allowed people to open up farms and expand without a crooked commerce city where gold was being devalued by the wealthy.

Take the price of every single warhammer box in existence, halve the price, and you now have a fair price that would draw in a ton of new players. It's actually unbelievable to me that people will spend $50 on a box of 5 figures. 10-fucking-dollars for a one inch tall plastic resin figure? Get the fuck out of here.

Those start collecting boxes would be a good fucking deal at like $35. It shouldn't cost more than like $150 to field a 1750-2000 point army in 40k, but in actuality it is more like $350 to $500.

the moment chaos was locked away, Nagash would have easily fucked up the remaining races

if you play on legendary, you are guaranteed to have constant rebellions for most of the game because you have -12 just for taxes and difficulty, and you can only get +6 through tech and buildings, even with max level oak of ages you will only barely break even, with the slightest bit of corruption sending you into the negative

which means that during the campaign you inevitably fight a great deal more wood elves then you fight beastmen, which is just ridiculous in my opinion, a change to rebellions that turns them into beastmen incursions would reverse the situation, and can be handwaved as saying that when the control and order in Athel Loren fail beastmen sense weakness and invade. I don't see why WELF control can't be "how well protected their lands are."

Nor are they like the Dawi who hold honor amongst kin so heavily being called a Kin-Slayer is the worst insult there can be amongst them. Lorewise there hasn't been war between Dawi holds or Dawi rebellion forever. They're too stubborn to actually break the ancient promise of kinship of a rebellion wide scale.

The Wood Elves have absolutely nothing on this. In fact they actively hate each other. Tree Spirits have Welfs, Welfs hate Tree Spirits, Dhurthu hates everyone, Glade Lords hate Orion, Orion is a dick in general, their society is tribal by nature...


There is NO reason for them not to have civil wars. I'd be all for Beastmen appearing instead of rebels if Athel Loren is above 25/30% corruption or some shit, but otherwise there's no proper or even acceptable justification for such bullshit

My experience with painting my Grey Knights with a coat of metal paint and then a second coat of silver paint because I didn't understand that the silver was only supposed to be a highlight is that if you're shit at painting you don't really care if it comes out shitty since that's the best you can do.

Also if you get really good later on I guess you can regret it and figure out a way to strip the paint and start over. I don't know if that works for plastic models though.

Yes it is possible to strip the paint, but the primer is basically there to stay. I personally used some sort of kitchen cleaner/degreaser (can't remember the name of it but I believe it came in a purple bottle?) and it never melted my units, however it did strip the glue off the pewter figures... so that's a thing

You can always google 'Warhammer paint stripping' and find several guides on it.
