Won't SOMEBODY PLEASE make a NEW THREAD edition
previous ded: >>172399580

The thread is dedicated to all games about building machines and systems out of blocks, in space or otherwise. Also, all these games are ded. Only ded games may join, otherwise they must have their own thread.
Whether or not a game belongs in /egg/ is a case by case matter, however games that would belong in /svgg/, space voxel games general, are automatically considered /egg/

WebM for physicians:
>gitgud.io/nixx/WebMConverter.git

List of currently known and vaguely not dead /egg/ games (this list is not fully inclusive and if you think a game might belong here, feel free to ask):
>Algodoo
>Avorion
>Besiege
>Chode - Children of a Dead Earth
>Empyrion - Galactic Survival
>Factorio
>From the Depths
>GearBlocks
>Garry's mod
>Homebrew - Vehicle Sandbox
>Infinifactory
>Intersteller Rift
>KOHCTPYKTOP: Engineer of the People
>Machinecraft
>REM
>Robocraft
>Robot Arena 2
>Scrap Mechanic
>SHENZEN I/O
>Space Engineers
>SpaceChem
>StarMade
>Skywanderers

Games that are definitely not /egg/:
>Minecraft
>The general that quite literally cannot be named. The Mexican scam artist one. With the shitposters. Fuck off.
>Hearthstone, found in the hearthstone general, /hsg/, not in this general.

Information about these games, such as where to get them if they're not on steam, trailers, /egg/ conquered/hosted servers, and other shit can be found in this pad:

Has anybody figured out how to make accurate railguns? Pic related, it's the dispersion of a railgun at 100 km. A conventional gun is like a laser and every single shot hits at this distance.

You need different bolts and screws for different things.

>>
>>172838068
From looking at the reviews, the negative ones were talking mainly about the build system being tedious rather than the RTS part itself, which was interesting.
See what they mean by 'slow', I think they might mean you have to undo everything if you make a mistake early rather than being able to select a particular piece.
>>
>>172839785
That must have been fixed recently, you can select an individual piece and delete it. The build interface is a little clunky though since it revolves around snap points rather than voxel or avorion style blocks, meaning you can only build so many things.

Watching the tank you just made roll out of the factory is super satisfying though even if it does a wheelie right afterwards and gets stuck on its ass

gnu muh big numbers lib
use 2 elonable ints for things before and after the period
make all calculations at least double because of that

of course division would have to be manual (divide with rest, divide /wr again, but this time using rest * 10 and add to prev result, repeat untill desired accuracy is met)

p.s. the lib has floats, do not ever use them, they are clangified
>>
>>172849146
Sure, that'd deal with the imprecision.
But the big numbers operations are much slower than int or float operations. You'd get a significant performance hit in a game that already runs like a dumpster fire.

I just want an RTS, that allows me to desing my own land units, including tanks, APCs, SPGs and artillery and where you can tweak things like power train, armour design, armament and crew positioning. Then you have to make it affordable so you don't end up like with the Tiger II:s
The obvious answer is the FtD, but I don't like the idea of the shields, which limits my gameplay to designing my own tanks and testing their armor by shooting at them with other tanks that I built.

>>
>>172859038
You'll run into computational gridlock as processing even basic addition for such absurd numbers will take inane amounts of time.
>>
>>172858724
The double precision doesn't mean precision in normal terms, but in 'resolution'. Its non-exponent value is literally double the size of a normal floating point integer, or close to that.
Problem is, it's a binary uneven number. 53 explicit bits of precision. That means you'll have to do quite a lot of rounding once you use up all those bits, even more than single precision (which is 24 bits, and therefore much nicer to round with) and rounding in binary can be a bit... chaotic. It has a higher resolution, and a larger exponent, but it is inherently less stable than single precision (and slower to compute with on specific hardware). In fact, you HAVE to round if you're dividing anything by three, and that introduces a lot of little errors.
Therefore, any computations where accuracy is more important shouldn't be done with floating point values. It's why all the banking systems in the entire world use a fixed point value which cannot entirely omit currency at higher exponents. If you used floating point arithmetic while manipulating with multiple billion values, you'd find that you're just constantly leaking money into the silicon heaven.

I think his argument is that we should just be done with it and use a high-precision fixed-point arithmetic (say, 128-bit, with 95 before and 32 after, and 1 sign bit), and accept fixed errors rather than the less predictable error found in floating point arithmetic. Which, to be fair, still leaves us with multiplied-error problems when you carry figures on in your calculations.

So my first impressions of the game is: Holy shit, it's actually a remarkably competent RTS for being yet another early access meme. It runs smooth as fuck and there are no obvious issues with path finding (although you'll need to make fairly stable units to not have them flip every second), and everything you'd expect from an RTS in terms of functionality is there from attackmove to selection & grouping to . There's even a "ram" button that makes your units accelerate towards a target, burning lots of energy but attaining sanic speeds

My issues so far is:
>claustrophobic as fuck, everything zoomed the fuck in, units have basically melee range if you don't use railguns or rockets
>making custom shaped modules to put in the editor is a convoluted process
>not that much variety in things your units can do (right now there's collector, repair and resupply modules, the rest is all guns)
>rockets are ridiculously overpowered, no point in putting any other weapon on your units even though they only come with 6 ammo
>transport fliers go at sanic speeds no matter how big the thing you picked up is, and there is no way to have one flier pick up multiple units supcom style
>you don't actually construct anything, all buildings are slots which you capture and then turn into something else

Picture related is the military i'm running with so far. Top to bottom, left to right:
Transport flier + warhead (you can drop the warhead to oneshot upgrade buildings, or transport the big tenks around at sanic speed)
Siege tenk (with stabilizers to counteract the recoil of the 3 railguns)
Light tenk
Heavy tenk
Really heavy tenk

Okay, taking >>172876982's advice, the boat starts porpoising instead of flipping at about .225 gain, but then adding even a little bit of derivative makes it start flipping again. Turning the gain up or down doesn't help.
>>
>>172886568
Proportional (gain) is "how hard should i fire the stabilization thrusters based on how far off i am from my ideal position?"
In layman terms, the more you are capsizing, the more the stabilization devices (likely thrusters) will fire
Derivative is "how hard should i fire the thrusters based on how fast my inclination is changing?"
In layman terms, the FASTER you are capsizing (or balancing), the stronger you will fire the thrusters. Since it "predicts" how strong to fire based on how fast the inclination is changing, it becomes quite twitchy
Integral is kinda the opposite of derivative (heck, mathematically it IS the inverse of a derivative) so it tends to smooth over the twitching.

The way i remember it is that the derivative part looks at the current derivative of the "input" curve (the tipping of the vessel in this case) and bases it's output upon it.
In other words, the faster the input is changing, the higher the derivative, the higher the output.

The integral instead looks at the area underneath the curve (or above the curve if it's below the x axis) and bases it's input upon it.
A high area, whether is due to a narrow and high spike or a wide and shallow "hill" will cause a stronger output from the integral part of the PID, thus dampening oscillations.

not that anon, but i'll try
long long story short: 64 bits encode a number
if you were to write them down from left to right, the leftmost is 63rd byte, rightmost is 0th byte for purpose of this post.
bit 63 is sign, no messing about, like in U2 (the 2's compliment), 0 = + sign, 1 = - sign
then we have the exponent that lies on 11 bits from 62 to 52, we'll come back to it later, important to note is: if exponent is 0 or 0x7ff then it's a special thingy
now for the other 52 bits (from 51 to 0), those are called the mantissa (or fraction as morons on wikipedia call it), it's a base number that is later transformed.
to decypher a number in a double you have to take mantissa and put it behind the period, then add 1.
now we have 1.whatevernumberwasinmantissa
then you put that to power exponent-1023(to allow negative exponents) and lastly add + or - in front depending on the sign bit.
as you can see, there is a clear gap for numbers <0, 1), that's why there are special exponents that are very special. if exponent is full of ones (11111111111, as before but hexd. there) then you are dealing with NaN or infinities
but it the exp. is equal to 0, then it's a signed zero or a value below 1, if the latter, you just don't add 1 to the mantissa

Continuing on,
The only bits that matter are the 52 that hold the fraction.
The exponent is meaningless for holding location or inventory data because if it's 10^-6 you don't give a fuck and if it's 10^9 you've fucked up.

A 64 bit int gives 64 bits of useful information and none of the exponent that doesn't matter. The actual range of values it can manage is so absurd that you will never reach it by mortal means outside of a cookie clicker game.

You don't need to memorize everything, just learn to build an engine, a gun, and AI, then strap it onto a hull with propellers and rudders. Then start improving those until you need a better hull to mount them on, eventually you'll have your first decent ship that can be upgraded with more complex systems like lasers and missiles.

Literally just build what seems to work and ask about turrets, engines and AI setup here. The tutorials were made by an idiot that got fed up with people asking how to do 'x', so he took the route of hardest hand holding.

11 block escape pod.jpg

I just made an 11 block escape pod (small ship).
It has everything needed to establish a base and can land on a planet.
Or you can stay in space, building solar panels on it.
Downfall is no medbay or medical parts.

Also thrust is only one direction.
Hard to land on a planet, but pretty cool once you get the hang of it.
>>
>>172906081
All small blocks:
>cockpit
>battery
>oxygen generator
>vent
>(2) ion thrusters
>(2) atmospheric thrusters
>gyroscope
>ore detector
>light armor block

Originally I tried with just one ion and atmospheric, but it crashed when loaded with cargo.
>>
>>172906350
If you're dealing with planets, getting autistic with numbers might help you a bit. Figure out how much cargo, in kg, you're going to want to move, and then how quickly you want that cargo to accelerate, then figure out how much thrust that will take. You'll want to adjust your numbers/build as you add mass and power requirements.

Trying to deal with planets I learned that you need a lot more thrust than you think you do.

>>172906829

Yeah, I don't run the numbers much.

I understand if I would have ran with low ice, knock out the vent block, and ore detector, you may be able to land on a planet with only one ion and one thruster. With a 6 block ship.

If I'm running my numbers right, you're trying to move about 20,000 kg of cargo
you want about 200,000N of thrust to be able to hover that on planet, in a 1x inventory game.

That's 3 or 4 small atmos just for cargo mass, not accounting for the rest of the ship. 5 small atmos should land you.

>>172907663
It landed!

Longer to stop, though. If you were an inexperienced pilot (with this pod) you would be kill. Also used a little ice breathing on the way down.

One way thrust is hard landing. You have point the ship bottom the direction you want to stop/slow.
>>
>>172908632
Yeah, you are off. It was only 16,400 cargo for the 11 block ship in this pic:
>>172906081

>Hi (Mark here, RC Game Director),

>Since we started Robocraft players have often asked about blue-prints. The main thing is that when you build a Robot it subtracts the blocks in that Robot from your inventory, which prevents you being able to build other Robots with the same blocks – we call that the ‘cube sink’.

>For ages we at Freejam have wondered if that was an error to have a ‘cube sink’ as it prevents a lot of things that would be possible if your Robots worked more like ‘blue prints’ instead. By ‘blue-prints’ I mean, once you have a ‘4 x Chain Shredders’ (for example) you can use them in as many Robots as you like.

>What if it worked like blue-prints instead of a cube-sink? Would you prefer it?

>Benefits:
>You could build as many Robots as you want with 4 x Chain Shredders, as long as you had at least 4 x Chain Shredders in your inventory
>You could have a ‘duplicate’ Robot button, to copy a Robot to a new bay so you can tweak it
>You could have multiple copies of the same Robot with different loadout setups, or different colour schemes
>You could even filter on all the Robots in the CRF that you could have based on your inventory, all those Robots would be fully downloadable, playable, and editable – i.e. giving you 100,000’s of Robots to play with if you where an end game player with a full inventory

>It could cause a few issues:
>Some players with massive inventories now could get really angry as they had worked damn hard to get what they had to acquire 100’s of Chain Shredders – how could we ensure that they were kept happy?
>Some players earn money by selling CRF creations, we could perhaps change that so they earn Robits when players ‘Get’ and ‘Play’ with their Robots instead to ensure nobody loses out
>New players would get many Robots much quicker, we would perhaps have to look at a way of slowing the progression down a bit to keep it the same play time as now – how would you do that?

wait a sec, the mainframe that you have set as a target, does it have a enemy simulator?

If it does, make sure it's turned on, and then, swap the laser on the missiles for heat-seeking and see if they work or not
>>
>>172957606
They bounce because they haven't armed yet. Decrease the arming time so they're live when they impact. Don't decrease it so far that they're live before they leave the rack, though.

When they overshoot, it's likely because they just can't turn hard enough to hit the target. They go in a big circle, yeah? Or maybe the laser is off-target and the missiles are trying to kill the horizon.

Hey guys. I made this Torpedo helicopter. It's pretty cool, I think.

Do torpedo sonar require sonar detection? I've got a few sonar buoys underneath, but the torpedoes are really shit at targeting things. It's basically a dice roll as to whether or not they lock on.

I think Koonschi, the Avorion dev is one of the most competent one-man shows in the market right now- BUT the game is only mildly /egg/

I think CHODE devs have done some fucking tremendous work so far, but I've only ever played one version of it, so idk if it's abandoned or not.

>Damn, why's that? It had potential aside from being ridiculously CPU-intensive.

Starmade runs waaaaaay better now. People dont play because theres literally nothing to fucking do in the game.

You can mine and hoard materials, and annoy some guys in their 100% safe space home base that cant be damaged, and then mine some more because mining is all there is to do in the game. Theres nothing exciting to do in Starmade.

Its graffix also look like dogshit, while similar games like Spengos and Empyrion look much better. Theres even another game that looks kind of like Starmade being made called Skywanderers that looks like itll be better in almost every way if the dev comes through and finishes it.

Apparently the best way to shoot down this plane is to remove its nose section, which moves the center of mass backwards and causes it to nose up and stall

Destroying an entire wing doesn't do much since the fuselage is a lifting body, and destroying the tail with cannons is almost impossible due to how much bracing there is in there

It's the barren expanse map which is a bigger sandbox they introduced a few patches ago. I made this plane that I put cannons or rockets on and use it to try and hunt down my other planes. The target is just a plane designed to take off on its own and then fly in a straight line without any input from me

I use mods for better building and to increase the values of things like rocket explosive charge, thrust, etc. Well that and the target plane in the webm has modded jet engines, but those are not really necessary.

chode needs composite barrels. My railguns have about 5 meter dispersion at 100 km which I believe is due to the soft aluminum copper lithium barrels swaying even though they're thick enough that the effective range is maxed out, whereas my conventional guns have bullseye precision at the same range due to their boron barrels.

i think it was in the old building system you had to place things in the order you want the factory to place them so you could minmax your vehicle to be quick to construct.
