So I just finished ending A. Game's great, lots of fun, looking forward to the rest.

My only complaint is the difficulty balance. Normal mode is laughably easy, where with just a few healing chips I can be unkillable without using any items, but Hard is such a jump because the enemies basically do triple damage and the lack of lock-on makes everything just a little more time consuming.

What do you guys recommend? Keep playing on Normal, or is Hard not as bad as I think it is once I get used to it?

Hard mode goes back and forth between "oh welp got oneshot by an enemy the same level as me because I forgot my defense chips" and killing squads of enemies without even meaning to. The difficulty scaling is all kinds of fucked in this game no matter what you play on. I suggest hard because the game will occasionally be appropriately challenging.

Never played Nier, but tried out the Nier: Automata demo
Combat was alright if a bit very much like Bayonetta.
Was a little funny that there was no reason to NOT be holding down R1 forever and ever.
Was kinda neat the swapping between 3D, linear, and top down, but felt unnecessary.

My biggest issue was the enemy design. I know they were going with super old-school, ultra utilitarian designs. But the bucket bots still felt pretty phoned in. Like very little effort was put into trying to make them visually appealing. Especially the boss. It just looked like a tube with a face glued on. Like someone spent thirty minutes in Blender.

Are those the style of the enemies throughout the game?

Let's talk builds for hard then.
If you compare max level chips, damage reduction (80%) effectively gives you 5x health, compared to 2x for HP up. Also offensive heal scales nicely with damage reduction vs. HP up, though auto-heal and deadly heal synergize with both.

How do damage reduction chips stack? If you had, say, 2 50% reduction chips, do you only get 50% reduction or do you get 75% reduction?

I'm not that far, so I must ask, what makes people say OC is so good? Is it worth not having as many other offensive boosts?

Also playing on very hard probably leads to some interesting builds. I would think that all tanky chips are useless if you still get one-shot, so very offensive + evade/counter based builds are probably ideal.

It's just repetitive to do. The game looks bland, the music is good, but it does become maddening on some tracks. I just eventually got into a zen murder-pattern on ground missions. Got myself into a rhythm and went to town to become a self-sustaining train of murder.

I want to clear every side thing I missed before I get the E end, and I'd rather just replay all the routes than jump around chapter select, but the fact that hardly any enemies scale to your level is very boring even if I put the difficulty on hard.

Gatling gun consistently seems to have far better dps on single targets. The laser has its value though, I don't dispute that.

I'm mostly concerned with the flying shmup segments, where enemy formation doesn't fit the laser as much as ground combat, and the missiles are so goddamn slow anyway.
But that's just my opinion. You'll get a lot of milage out of the laser all the same.

They have comparable damage if you're just looking at individual damage ticks. Gatling has a higher rate of damage ticks but bullets stop after hitting one enemy. Laser has a lower rate of damage ticks but the beam pierces through enemies.

I do not trust the sword on hard or higher. Keeping track of spacing between bullets is a pretty basic thing, but I'll inevitably whiff and the bullets interrupt the sword animation.

The machines are definitely the watchers, right? Angelic language, eating each other to gain power, oddly almost-human appearances...
