You can definitely tell from that Gael boss fight video just how well FromSoft's callbacks work with a wider portion of their audience. "OMG it's Artorias!" is something 80+% of players who don't frequent forums would absolutely love and it kind of justifies (at least in their eyes) the incessant references to older games.
