Been awhile since I did bronze age reading and research but you had swords of various length (also Khopesh), axes like the duckbill axe, maces, a curious mace-axe looking thing the Egyptians used that was also wielded two handed like a falx or a daneaxe, spears, slings, javelins, bows from simple bows to composite (and I think there were recurve bows that weren't composite in addition to recurve bows), "Throwsticks" (boomerang but it doesn't come back). No crossbow, don't think there was anything like greek fire. There may have been the scorpions in a jar in New Kingdom Egypt. There was linen armor, leather armor, scale or pseudo lamellar and the greek bronze cuirasses.

No thanks. Warhammer has spoiled me and while I know historical games can never be as diverse as a fictional setting, I'd rather not go back to the Rome 2 standard. Medieval 2 style faction diversity is the way to go for historical titles even if it means some time periods get excluded.

I thought Rome 2 did a better job than Attila. Inevitably some settings sacrifice roster diversity for playstyle diversity or culture/aesthetics diversity. Coincidentally it's why I think a Renaissance game can work, or pike and shot. I use to hate the idea of a pike and shot Total War, but I'm starting to like the idea more. I hated it because I thought it would just be mass heavy infantry lines, ineffectual cav, and minimal opportunity for large maneuvers. The problem is as vampies is that I lose men chasing after chaos due to the attrition. I've found that one of the best ways to beat them is to just lure them in and then bum-rush them with about 3 armies with 1 in reserve to cuck them on their retreat.

Which is what I tried to do in pic related but you'll see that I'm getting cucked by fucking lightning strike by Dickeater with his insane levels.

I think though with that high ground and my loadsaspears and archers I should be able to hold off them and win, or at least decimate them enough so that they will be wiped out by those stacks that can't reinforce.

My lack of flying units was a MISTAKE so those hellcanons will fuck me up unless I can cuck them with my cavalry.

I'm using Radious unit mod as well if anyone is wondering.

Another thing is this is late Renaissance, 1635 to 59. Earlier on will have less pike and guns and more cav and heavy armored guys.

CA did say one thing about the new game in that it had some interesting kill animations, I really hope that means they are going to try to recreate these more 'fluid' battles like that video shows with guys running and fighting through lines.

Another thing that turned me over to the pike and shot Total War idea is that unit diversity would be pretty easy with how pike vs pike combat went. In Warhammer we have several units that are just the same unit with different equipment. In past titles usually units like that had a clear best choice and that was it, but Warhammer actually gives value to choosing between spears, spears w/ shields, swords w/ shields, etc. because they all have similar stats for being the same guys just carrying different weapons.

Would be sick if they took that idea to a historical title. Instead of neat upgrades to the pike units you get different equipment with similar stats, but for different roles. For example: a pure pike unit, a pike unit with muskets for range, but worse melee, and a pike unit with swords for better anti-infantry, but worse anti-large and vulnerability to guns. A system like that to simulate the different way pike squares were formed throughout the years would keep it historical and prevent the game from falling into the trap of Rome 2 and Atilla of there being clearly superior choices for a given role.

I think a Pike and Shot Total War would benefit by including the eastern armies like Russia, Cossacks, Poland, and Ottomemes were Pike and Shot sort of reached there, but took on a different form of warfare with a greater focus on cavalry both ranged and melee. Pike and Shot era cavarly was pretty diverse ranging from heavy gendarmes in full plate and lances to reiters with pistols firing right before impact and switch to swords or mounted crossbowmen.

I hope so too. Warhammer was such a pleasant surprise. It's honestly in the top three best Total War games, if not the best, in terms of gameplay and mechanics. Obviously if you have a preferred game setting that's first, but Warhammer has the gameplay down solid even if you disregard things like magic.

The way I see it, they can do it in one of a few ways:
They keep the magic system the same as it is and just give loremasters, slann and character casters strong abilities that aren't really related to spellcasting but are helpful anyway

They implement the wizard level system from the tabletop, which would help differentiate stronger spellcasters from others, but could be potentially hard to do correctly

They go and tweak the spells for each mage/lord so that they're stronger for that particular character, like how Helman Ghorst can summon graveguard rather than zombies/skeletons

When did they increase WoC AI to be more aggressive? Started playing again a bit before bretonnia came out. I've done a VC, bret, empire, and currently on a beastmen playthrough and every time I've seen arch take big bird with him into 6-8 stacks of spear and crossbow men led by KFC sitting on the kislev border. Now he usually manages to take out most of the empire stacks but will usually get wiped out on the following empire turn. This seems the most likely to me unless they really do plan to do a complete magic rework in one of the sequels. It isn't even that bad of an idea either if they can come up with interesting abilities for each LL. Honestly, all wizard LLs should have a ability to rapidly access winds of magic reserves to distinguish them from standard wizards and melee focused magic users like Manny. They way they don't have to mess with how magic works too much since it's the same spells, but you can (over)cast them a lot more. Also, wizard LL could always have zero miscast chance, etc. There is a lot of ways CA could tweak the current system if they don't plan on a rework anytime soon.

I dunno how they would handle a unit with three different weapon loadouts that can be switched to on-command that aren't as simple as long range/melee loadout. I actually think so - set it during China's modern period, around the fall of the Ming dynasty and the rise of the Qing. You get some fun infighting, contact with Mongol, Jurchen and Turkish tribal cultures, Korea, and a little Japan, and eventually Europeans start coming along. It's a great way to make a foray into the modern era, since for so long China was so backwards - you could still make use of medieval tactics, sort of like how in the Americas expansion for Medieval 2, you could actually fight the Europeans as Mayans or Aztecs and conceivably win.

Wood Elves have a tough start, Angrund and Carcassonne are tough nuts to crack for starting Wood Elf units. Carcassone will eventually take peace after a bit (and rushing the Bretonnian Diplomacy tech).

The real first move is to take the Southern Grey Mountains, Skarsnik will put the pressure on Karak Norn, you can easily sweep in and take both out, secure the whole mountain chain and move from there.

Part of what I feel makes Bretonnia distinct from the not!Medieval France it pretty much is includes that it is a polytheistic kingdom, and that they don't do the traditional page to squire to knight that the real world did, instead having peasant squires, with noble sons becoming knights as soon as they were old enough to hold a lance.

That aside, it really does depend on interpretation. Some people/lore consider Bretonnia almost monothestic, at best vaguely acknowledging other deities exist but focusing almost solely on the Lady except in areas that border the Empire; other lore makes it seem like the Lady is only worshiped by the nobility, with the peasantry worshiping more traditional deities. I prefer a mix of the two, especially since there's obviously the connection between Bordelaux and Manaan, la Masiontaal is obviously a church for Taal (and in older lore, there were priests of Taal there), and Courrone is actually the center of Shallya's cult, with Men-at-Arms being required to make a donation to her temple when they join up. The Lady is the dominant deity, but it's like Sigmar's relation to the Empire.

I finished the long campaign today with Orion, one Spellweaver of Life, six Wildriders with shields, eight Wardancers, and four more with Asrai Spears.

Second two livery techs are great. But I'm somebody who hates using Demigryphs so they matter quite a bit more to me.

Second Foundry tech is okay if you're starving out a ton of sieges, third tech is good.

Second Blacksmith is superb.

Second Harbor is decent, Third is damn nice, though only if you go North instead of East.

First Barracks is very nice.

Third menagerie is a solid boost.

First Armory is amazing, second is ok, third is good if you're spamming steam tanks but they're amazing to begin with so it's pretty superfluous.

Third temple is okay.
Anything I haven't mentioned is pretty trash or you already have.

Might not pick up Divine Sanction though, or whichever the 2 was a flat +2 public order boost. Did that because I panicked about chaos since I haven't been this far yet. Now everything is under control. I tried to ignore the money ones since if you're just clever and frugal with your spending you can have bonuses you can't buy instead.

NOPE. Can hold the undead horse, kinda. The hound micro is annoying but can deal with it. Can never actually anvil them though, because units gets hung up on the thousands of skeleteons and my artillery is useless and more useless. Hellstorm does some decent damage, but nothing amazing 50 kills per turret. My great cannon though? Pretty sure this is the end to my Karl Franz. Its just so many skeleteons with no ability to hammer. I dont even have neighboring armies that can assist, they are currently being recruited. What I really want is multiplayer (or just a mode) likened to tabletop in customization. They can add as much bloat as they want, but until they fix these two issues TWW is not a good game. In comparison to even S2, M2, Attila or even R2 TWW has an atrocious campaign in terms of its pacing, mainly in the fact that nothing happens, you are never threatened by anything, and the game is a continuous snowball for the player while every AI factions loses its shit as the game progresses. A lot of this stuff is caused by some really stupid issues, like the AI being unable to figure out how to build a military town and recruit from it, or how to make a balanced army. Heaven forbid the AI had enough intelligence to counter pick you.

The AI needs a smarter way to stay in relative power balance with the player.

I found Chaos (and other Hordes) much more playable when after every fight, you combine your damaged units then re-recruit whatever is missing. This way it is only 1-2 turns and you're back up to near full strength.

Non-hordes have a much harder time of this.

Its a bit more complicated than that

For screenshots, 4k images are best (pic related). Which obviously you can max out everything since you only need 1fps. That being said you cant actually play at 4k with a 6700k/1070, since it sits at 40fps but will tank to 20 when a fight starts. And thats with AA/TF turned off and playing on large, as well as a bunch of other stuff turned down/off.

The alternative is to run 1920x1080 (or whatever your native is) with AA/TF on max, and ultra sizes, but you wont hold 60fps very well. And you wont be running everything on max here either.

tldr version; I doubt there is a graphic card + CPU combo that can truly max out TWW and hold 60 for webms to look amazing.

It also makes for boring gameplay. One of the things in any TW has been the sieges. Rome, Medieval, Shogun and so on. The sieges have always been the absolute highlight. I've played through so many campaigns where I have not had a single siege, and the only time the AI attacks they aim for undefended villages and is guaranteed a win.

There is absolutely no way you can maneuver those 6 troops around to win against a full army, or even a half full one. I thought sieges in Rome 2 were great. Lots of enemy to overcome. Multiple stages. You have to plan the best route to the walls. Take the walls. Fight in the streets, then fight in the square.

We're playing a videogame. It's not fun to have the enemy "be smart" and tech up and make money while staying away from you and then sending an army. Older historical titles could get away with it for "muh realism" but this is pure fantasy. Everyone would have came for days if the walls stood up, sprouted arms and an HP bar grew and filled the top of the screen and you literally had to fight the wall. Yes, the whole wall. Jumping in the air, ground pounding your troops. It would be fun.
That's not the case though so I'll settle for fighting with and against real troops.

So for a while, since that fucking launcher I think, Atilla and Shogun 2 haven't been working. Warhammer still is, but the loading times are shit. How are you supposed to beat AI Wood Elf armies in the early game? I know from experience that late-game they will destroy everything, so I want to nip them in the bud right now. But armies with 6 units of archers, then some cavalry and wardancers I just can't beat. I'm playing Khazrak and I've not unlocked Centigors yet, but I figured Chaos Warhounds would do the trick. Vanguard deployment, scaly skin, very fast would all let me close the distance quickly while taking as little ranged damage as possible to silence the Guns of Athel Loren. But they just break within five seconds. I've tried baiting ranged units out of formation to rip apart, I've tried straight up fights in the fields and fights from hilltops and I just can't beat the fucking Wood Elves. 6 archers just break anything and the ripple kills the rest of my army and the battle's over in four minutes. I don't trust Bretonnia to keep them contained while I go off and wait for Centigors to become available. And I'm not even sure if Centigors will fix it.

Yeah they are fun, the Accuse ability is basically Spirit Leech on a 90 second cooldown plus his ranged damage is off the charts. In a regular grind it out fight against blobs of infantry he's pretty bad, he's a specialist, if you can get him in the right position against characters he can really perform.

Okay so I've tried the elf mini campaign three times now and every time I've failed

No matter what I do/build/recruit the Mongoloids just show up with half a dozen full doomstacks and level me

Am I missing something? Do they show up later if I crank down the difficulty?

I beat main campaign (dorfs, empire, vamps) and beastmen mini-campaign with no problems but holy fucking shit I feel like I'm trying to hold back a tidal wave with a beer mug

In Attila how the fuck do you beat the Sassanid crossbow cavalry as WRE? They just keep sending doomstack after doomstack that's just 3 spearmen, 6 lancers, 10 mounted crossbows, and the general. The only variation is if they replace some lancers with elephants.

Any cav I use to try and run down their crossbows gets shot to pieces before they can engage. Sword and Spears do even worse as they just shoot straight up over everything with their near limitless ammunition. I thought the huns were cancer but this is just stupid.

The AI doesn't know how to think like a human does in terms of macros strat for the battle. Their micro is on point, you can get destroyed by their ability to constantly reposition on a field.

Higher difficulties makes the commander snipe cheese less prevalent, since in a 1v1 the enemy will crumple your lines.

I'm about to start Bretonnia today, so I'm obviously going to be using a lot of cavalry. How should I handle them during sieges? As other factions I've noticed how many get killed standing outside the walls as I assault with my infantry and try to breach the gates, and unless I find them some woods to hide in, I'm out of luck. With other factions I usually don't care as my army isn't cavalry centered (greenskins, beastmen, vampires) but this is quickly going to become a problem for me with all those juicy knights that can get picked off by towers.

Should I make a dedicated siege army? Am I retarded and missing out on some trick here? In any other TW title I just keep my horseys out of range but Warhammer seems to make that impossible with the size of deployment zones and the range of towers.

SFO attempts to tackle this by making elite units recruitible from faction capitals, that way the AI only has to build a forge / armory building and gets access to faction iconic units. It's a decent solution and I have seen better AI armies with it.

Every single pixel you can click on your screen, every single possible width of the formation of your units, every single unit you can select, every single enemy unit you can order a unit to attack is a dimension of the possible input you can give to Total War, which is only limited by the number of frames your PC can run at. The computer has no intuition about what to do, except what the programmer hard cores into the program, so it randomly tries possibilities and assigns the output a score. After a good healthy dose of hours in the game, can't be bothered to finish a campaign anymore.

Army limits as in shit that isn't meant to be spammed everywhere such as a front line of black orcs or greatswords. Leading to very numerically small armies. But yes, having multiple smaller stacks is usually worse.

Beastmen are better than Chaos, but what do you do besides siege out shit. Not much. No map objectives, nothing to care about, nothing to do besides go to the nearest village unless AI is hiding there.

As stated the game is good and overall after 700+ hours its a positive experience but I just hope with all they are saying I would like to get some more shit.

No one is motivated to use chaff, except Dwarfs, thus 90% of the game's roster dies out and every factions has to abuse it to get anywhere.

Almost every faction is designed to bring a lot of bodies to the field supported by different, specialized tools to help in certain match ups. Not armies of greatswords with demi spam running into an army of grave guard supported by a hammer of full blood knights.

This leads to everyone being an army of greatweapon wielding armored infantry cores that might as well be palate swaps with different magic.

The only faction that plays out very similar to what it should is the dorfs since they are supposed to have an infantry advantage and rely on defensive formations and are usually outnumbered.

Just think about it if Saurus are shit because no ap, or is Skaven slaves are downright useless and the only thing to do is spam storm vermin. Vampires have already abandoned skellies, why would TK's bother bringing them?

Stunties don't have any motivation to go there in general, but I guess they could occupy whatever the skaven can occupy over there. Though their occupation would primarily be chasing them underground under the sea to clear out the tunnels once and for all.

Chaos campaign is actually pretty disappointing, though their roster is cool, despite being incomplete.

Are you going von Carstein or main Vampire Count faction?
They differ a bit in what lords you'll be using.

Vlad and Mannfred shit on all the other legendary lords though. Mannfred is probably the single strongest unit in the game and Vlad has the best army-wide ability by far.
Note that if you go von Carstein as Isabella you can get Vlad super quick.

Direwolves are really good cavalry early on.
Try to phase out zombies in favor of skeletons quickly, simply because you need to engage as quickly as you can with vamps to not take fire, and zombies move more slowly than the rest of your units, which is awful when you want them to be in the front.

invocation of nehek and raise dead are probably the two best spells in the game.

Do not fall for the Black Coach meme.

Make sure you develop Eastern Sylvania as quickly as possible, the gold mine there contributes more to your economy than several other provinces combined.

Be on guard for stuntie betrayal, especially if they're beating the greenskins.
A quick march into the mountains to raze a city or three is usually enough to discourage them for awhile.

I have only ever had one siege, and it was when the enemy had such a large army I could not possibly hold them back.

One time, when the Wood Elves had fucked me over as the Empire (before they stopped being such a deadly force), I just wanted them to siege Altdorf and finish me off, since I couldn't muster enough men to take back any territory. But every time, they would siege for a turn or two - with Durthu and a full army - and then break if I tried to sally. They wouldn't linger long enough for a full siege, and I wanted something more fun than getting starved out.

I like that forcing a settlement to surrender feels a bit more viable than it did in Medieval 2 or Empire, but it is just so disappointing that every siege battle ends up being more about bashing numbers than actual strategy.

I find that sitting on your ass building economy and declaring war on everything the dwarfs dislikes is the way to get on their good side, maybe give them some gold, and then when you're chums you can start expanding. Even taking over a ruin left from a dwarf vs. human war will make the dwarfs go all AVERSION on you.
