The thread is dedicated to all games about building machines and systems out of blocks, in space or otherwise. Also, all these games are ded. Only ded games may join, otherwise they must have their own thread.

WebM for physicians:
>gitgud.io/nixx/WebMConverter.git

List of currently known and vaguely not as dead /egg/ games (this list is not fully inclusive and if you think a game might belong here, feel free to ask):

>Rocks dropped from the moon have power of 100s of nuclear bombs
Rocks dropped from the moon will fall to the moon.
If that retard means using rocks or asteroids as a weapon, you can do that from across the system if you know how to do it properly
>>
>>169798413
elon musk said he would send tourists to the moon by next year (suuuuuuure)

since about half of wu's wiki is about gamergate I completely disregard her opinions on anything
>>
>>169798708
For some reason people think that gravity on the moon still pulls people t earth, and that you can simply drop things from the moon. They also think you can just drop things from orbit and they'll fall straight down

>people think that gravity on the moon still pulls people t earth
But it does.
But the Moon's gravity is stronger near the Moon.

And you can drop a thing in orbit and it will eventually fall down.
Depending on what kind of orbit, it could take anywhere from zero to millions of years to lithobrake.
>>

I've only seen low earth orbit delivery so far.
>>
>>169799117
>Moon's gravity is stronger near the Moon.
you know, some time ago I was deving some shitty space game and thought of an optimization to just consider the gravity of the nearest astral body

then the satellite I was testing shot out of the solar system

turns out, even at Earth surface, the gravity of the Sun is still larger, we just dont notice because reference system

I think acceleration towards the sun was something like 30m/s2 or something like that
>>
>>169799170
>the lifter is untested
>the manned pod is untested
>he still hasnt sent anyone to the LEO

yeah, sure, totes gonna sent the bogs to the moon before 2019
>>
>>169799117
What I meant to say is they believe the dropped object will accelerate towards the core of the earth immediately once dropped. Typically they also think it will accelerate at 10 m/s

Same for orbits. Straight down
>>
>>169798960
Well the devwalkout probably freed up a lot of funds for new ways to scam the player base.

>>Having settled on a specific direction for time, any direction perpendicular to it will be one that we consider to be purely a direction in space. In our own universe, that leaves us with three dimensions of space that all behave in the same way: there’s no fundamental difference between x, y and z.

But in the Dichronauts universe, if t is our chosen time dimension, we are left with three perpendicular dimensions, x, y and u, as “directions in space”, but they are not all fundamentally the same, because u is potentially a direction a world line could follow, while x and y are not. So although we have a three-dimensional space here, we can’t expect its geometry to be that of our own familiar, Euclidean space.

Problem in a ship of this size right off the bat is that you only can build the shittier components, and as such you need to do a terrible spam of generators to power the whole thing. It absorbs enormous amounts of hydrogen to run too.

Not him, but I thought I'd throw my 2 bits in. I'll note that none of those games allow much freedom whatsoever, let alone building. Its possible to design a game to not need tutorials, but very rarely is it going to involve much of anything in the way of engineering.
>>
>>169850975
I'd actually argue that tutorials are okay but it feels less jarring to integrate them into the early levels of a game and teach new concepts by suggestion on a rolling basis. Classic example is HL2, and although that's not an engineering game it should still be an inspiration to all.

Besiege pretty much only teaches you how to place blocks. All other gameplay concepts are introduced organically throughout the levels.

Some consider the Factorio campaign to be a tutorial, but since the objectives in each mission take so long I'd argue they're not. Taking that into account, it does a decent job of introducing ideas without taking you out of the 'game loop'.

>A well designed game shouldn't rely on tutorials
I agree that a well designed game shouldn't rely on tutorials, but that being said, a game that does isn't necessarily a bad game by default.

Sometimes when a game achieves a decent to great amount of depth in it's mechanics there are certain things that have to be explained to be understood, an explanation of the small mechanics that comprise the overall mechanics.

And while it's not necessarily impossible to remove tutorials from probably 99% of games, it would require a lot of effort to make those mechanics seem obvious and natural, and more often than not, far more resources/time/effort than you might think, resources that could be far better spent on improving other areas of the game and adding more content, which is especially important to consider when you're working with few developers, such as in the case of indie games.

If you like to try to learn on your own, that's cool, just don't drop a game just because it has a tutorial, it's a kind of shallow thing to drop a game for.

Tutorial guy here
It has a very nice sci-fi feel, but some design decisions are a bit weird. As far a I know there is no gameplay outside of a ship neither so you can't go out and mine or build stuff. You design a ship in the editor, pay the resources, and then teleport to it.

The sound effects are weird, they are completely absent in some stuff like footsteps, then you teleport somewhere and it rapes your ears.

Gonna go find something to shoot at. Dunno if there is anything else to do after that

If someone wanna try coop, I'll probably be playing the next few days around this time

Siligel is better for laser protection than Graphogel. Also how's the range on that gun?
>>

This fucking caliber makes no sense and it only tells me that the developer needs to unfuck internal ballistics simulation something fierce.
>>
>>169862083
At that thickness, nothing will provide any protection. I chose graphogel because it's the lightest material there is, just as an aesthetic covering. The gun has a 1.5 km/s muzzle velocity, though my strategy is to burn 5.5 km/s of delta V during intercept to augment the guns power.

For what game? In spengies I build my ships like those of the Expanse, building-like tubes with a reactor in the basement and a command floor at the top, with various utility and crew decks inbetween. In CHODE every ship is pretty much an assortment of modules stacked one atop another, wrapped in a form fitting sheath of various armor materials. All of my ships inevitably end up looking like darts with three large radiator fins for it's reactors and hulls studded with smaller radiators for weapon and crew modules, along with the turrets of various weapon systems.

It's more difficult that it looks. You'd need to know how big was before erosion left it like that, then you'd need to know how it was before the impact, and then, you'd still need to know how was the atmosphere when it fell, angle of incidence, it's speed to know how much time did it burn, etc.
It's not a trivial task

It's the City from Blame!.

If you really want to build brutalist mutant cyborg bullying zone, I would recommend Minecraft. With mods and the external edit tools you may even be able to make it useful.

On the other hand, if you just want to explore the City in VR if you want, try this:
http://store.steampowered.com/app/265690/
>>
>>169930298
You can't in any egg game I know of, they're simply too large and the various construction systems don't allow for very good spheres. You also wouldn't be able to find construction materials strong enough to build such a thing, neutronium is a nonstarter because if you can't shape it, too much and it will just be a small neutron star, too little and it will just decay violently. Carbyne also wouldn't work, because although it's the strongest potentially feasible construction material known to humankind, it would be nowhere near strong enough.

A much more practical system would be a Dyson Swarm, a large number of independently guided solar collectors which could also be habitats, greenhouses, etc etc etc, once in position they could be linked to one another and use a small portion of the energy they collect to keep themselves steady in one position.

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCZFipeZtQM5CKUjx6grh54g/videos
This guy talks a lot about various megastructures, including Dyson Spheres, Dyson Swarms, Matrioshka Brains, and Shkadov Thrusters.

I didn't say they do, neutronium is practically useless, and Carbyne is only a potential construction material since there are still issues linking it into chains, much less mass producing it. What part of "potentially feasible" do you find difficult to understand?
>>
>>169906109
>I just wish there was a proper 3D factorio.
Minecraft (with Buildcraft/Thermal Expansion) isn't really that far from it, right? All you really need is a modded ore block that, when attempted to mine, just spits out vanilla ore blocks for a while. Then an edit to the quarry and mining well to follow the rules (rather than eat the modded ore instantly) and you have something similar to Factorio's ore patches.

The is name as vague as ketone or amine, so I'm going by the "carbon with three non-bonding electrons".
An uneven amount of non-bonding electrons implies a radical, all of which are inherently very unstable (as they'll readily undergo chemical reactions).
I'm not sure if I find it more or less likely than neutronium, which would likely decay at a very rapid rate.

Yes and no. They're way too exposed for this to be a serious "must win at all costs beat the campaign beat the godly bullshit" design, but they're mostly solid metal and you'd have to blow off all four of the 2m slopes that hook them to the hull to pop them off. It'll also take the loss of one or two just fine unless both roll pods on the same side bite it.
For the purposes it's built for, namely looking good and being an interesting thing to build, they'll work perfectly well.

That's fucking BONKERS man. That's the sort of impact that could quite literally be felt on the other side of the planet. We'd know if such an event had occurred because there'd be a crater the size of a small fucking state.

>melting antarcticas ice

The Coast Guard says that in previous years Polar Star typically worked through approximately 12 to 13 miles of ice to reach McMurdo Station. This year, however, there was more than 60 miles of ice to break with thickness ranging from two feet to more than 10 feet.

“We experienced a significantly larger ice field this year compared to the last several years,” said Capt. Michael Davanzo, commanding officer of the Polar Star. “In several areas, the ice was under considerable pressure and covered with several inches of snow, slowing our progress. Despite these challenges, the crew worked around the clock to prepare the resupply channel before the arrival of the first ship.”

Amazingly after getting bitched out by the every shrinking playerbase every day for a year they actually listened and made the game alot less jewey. You can now easily craft and sell a part here and there to make all the premium currency you need for free.

But it might be too late and the games most likely going to be stillborn, which is a shame because it has the potential to be alot of fun. I love the madmax aesthetic.

My favorite is that you can over/under tier weapons. Ran into a player with tracking missiles while our entire team had two to four machine guns. Crushed us in our entirety over the course of like eight matches before all my parts were too degraded to use. Glad they fucking fixed that awful system.
>>
>>169973127

Yeah, I actually like that you can build a fuck off hueg end game guns and then take it into low tier matches as a glass cannon build with low armor and gear so you can squeeze into low tier matches.

You can wreck newbies, but you alos run into guys on the enemy team doing the same thing, so it sort of balances out.

Games dead as fucking shit though right now because everyones waiting until after the big wipe to play again.

Any good detective series I could watch? Something like "less noire and more unorthodox methods set in current time" like Mentalist, or "more noire but cyberpunk or sci-fi setting". Hell, even political drama like House of Cards, but set in Expanse-like not-so-far future, will do.

I've put in all the cams for the individual functions
I've got:
>read input, put into register 1
>read input, put into register 2
>read result, transfer to input
>read register one
>increment address of register 1
>read register 2
>increment address of register 2
>add (whatever the address rods specify) registers 1 and 2, store carry and output
>subtract (whatever the address rods specify) registers 2 from 1, store borrow and output
>put result of add/subtraction into Results register, at whatever the address rods specify

I guess those are microprograms? I don't know the terminology.

I'm using punched cards as input. You'll delete boxes off of a template, and that's read into the machine. Each card has 11 studs. The first 8 specify a number, and the last 3 are the control bits.
>000 - put number in register 1
>001 - put number in register 2
>010 - add register 2 to register 1, store in results
>011 - subtract register 2 from register 1, store in results
>100 - move Results to register 1
>101 - move Results to register 2
>110 - clear all registers
>111 - ???self destruct???

As you can see some functions will require multiple cams to be activated. The control bits will determine which "master cam" gets activated. For instance, 101 (move results to register 2) will activate
>read result, transfer to input
>read input, put into register 2

Now I will read my sci-fi and enjoy comfy rain noises while I sleep.

They are less efficient than just burning coal.
Which is to say, you have literally no reason to use them from an energetic or space saving standpoint.
Yes, you can make them go faster. But you can do exactly the same thing twenty times as efficiently, from an energetic, space saving AND material standpoint just by building more steel furnaces.
Use electric furnaces only if you're going full solar. And don't go full solar, unless you have literally zero coal or gas.

>Use electric furnaces only if you're going full solar. And don't go full solar, unless you have literally zero coal or gas.
Original image poster here. I actually did go full solar, mostly because I was getting sick of having to figure out placed to put boilers. I ended up making my base around a small lake, and by the time I needed more energy, I had already put tones of shit along the coasts. With solar I can just plop down a blueprint as I expand walls or over depleted resource patches.

I suppose I could have stuffed them all into a Factorissimo box, but I hadn't installed any (game-changing) mods until I launched my first rocket.

The main reason I went for electric furnaces was because I wanted both sides of the belts. I was reaching a point where single lane inputs weren't feeding enough ore for all the furnaces, even on blue belts. The end of the line was starved, while the storage boxes at the train stop were full. I suppose I could have split the furnaces up so that smaller groups had their own feed, but I did that in my copper example (when I started hitting the same problem) and still got called out for shitty belt management, so I dunno.

> What's wrong with electric furnaces?
They take more space than steel furnaces. Steel furnaces are 2x2, electric are 3x3 (not including the space required for the extra power generation).

The coal belt required for steel furnaces is an extra row (two tiles) per two furnaces. Steel furnaces tile at 2x13 per two furnaces (13 tiles per furnace), electric at 3x14 per two furnaces (21 tiles per furnace), ~62% more space.

Electric furnaces are basically "I can't be assed planning the layout and power lines are easier to route than a transport belt". They're just too bulky for the primary smelting blocks (iron/copper). They're borderline acceptable for steel plate, and not a problem for stone bricks.

Exception: if you're running your base entirely on solar power, then electric is justified. But you need a dozen solar panels to replace one steam engine.

>>
>>169996859
if we're just talking military mechs you'll see small-scale bipedal or quadrupedal mechs a la boston dynamics and exosuits for individual soldiers, anything bigger is unfeasible and any more legs is uneconomical. if you have the tech to keep a robot balancing on two legs, why waste money on six more?
>>
>>169996859
Bipedal are best for things like construction and being able to lift things for long distances, but 4+ legs are best for anything that relies mostly on balance (projectile weapons, stable movement, strength under long periods of stress, and that one word meaning you'll be fine if you lose one leg that I've somehow forgot right now).
Also in robotics, balancing bipedal machines can be a real bastard to get right.

Yeah, since one of the 'criteria' we have is that a game can't be active enough for there own general we've ended up with a few people playing a number of varyingly dead/slow-development games. The space part came from /svgg/, which was even more dead so we had to expand to survive.

Okay, I'm about halfway through the ChoDE 1.0.8 campaign and I must pass judgement.

The controls are bad. The axes of the orbit gizmo might be useful for daily driver maneuvers as in [REDACTED], but planning one-burn flybys of enemy ships/drones/missiles involves fighting the given axes and gets old quickly. The incomplete intercept/flyby icons actually make last-minute panic burns and I can see how they would confuse somebody not familiar with orbital mechanics to begin with. Also, you can't drag burn times around like in [REDACTED], which makes another class of transfers really tedious. I heard this is fixed in the latest version, though.

It's not saturated. If it was, they'd be working (and it could supply 20), but actually saturating it is sufficiently rare (there's 3 of those blocks in parallel) that it's not worth adding any more unless mining was consistently higher.

That setup is supplying rocket production at 24x (i.e. 24 assemblers for each of low-density structures, rocket control units and rocket fuel), and it's quite well balanced: it's 50:50 as to whether the limiting factor is structures or control units. It's never short of rocket fuel because the oil wells never run dry, unlike ore mines.
