Besides personal bias, both are basically just walking tropes. If you're into said tropes, great, if not, well sucks to suck, that's how DA romances work. It basically comes down to the lack of options. Female elf has 4 straight romance options, 3 of which are companions (who objectivly have more fleshed out romances than the war table cucks). Straight male of any race has 2 options, only one of which is a companion, the other is a war table character.

O did a good job in that their romancable characters were universally likable, regardless of your actions in the game. 2 did a good job by making something for just about everybody. Inq took the characterization style from 2 (Niche and more unique characters) but gave straight male 1/3 of the options females have.

Not usually, but it helps if you need easy materials for crafting and you can get mounts and other stuff out of it. Some areas are unlocked through timed assignments, but they're just dungeons for the most part, not necessary unless you want more lore and items.

I'm not the same guy. I got that screenshot from a youtube video. I just like the aesthetics of this kind of style. A recent intentional example is Bernband, a tiny indie walking simulator with voxel graphics- pic related. Another older voxel graphics game is Delta Force.

It's probably also related my fascination with old computer UI styling. I use the Classic theme on Windows and the Microfox theme for my browser. On unix-likes I try to get it looking either hyper-modern or Windows 95.

I might have a fetish for that shitty ancient shade of grey every pre-2000 theme used.

Also I think the expressions wouldn't look quite so bad if they didn't have those weird bug eyes. I mean I understand they're aiming for a sort of semi-realistic stylised thing with the cartoony eyes and blockish hair but it just looks weird. On the vague plus-side, while some reviewers noted the animations are ehhh questionable, a couple have also said they're notably better than the trailer stuff. So at least there's that.

I think the infamous absurd FemRyder death smile wasn't a bug, but probably half-finished work they put out anyway that they *might* have gotten around to fixing. I don't think "top half of face not moving" is a bug. I'm assuming that's what those particular reviewers were talking about - or at least I'm hoping.

The new stuff still looks pretty bad though. Might take a while to get used to. Can we call it BW incompetence if Inquisition was fine? Maybe Montreal is just shitbins.

The animations in DA:I were mostly reused from other games, like I'm pretty sure Cullen's romance is spliced together from Liara's and Jack's scenes. There was also something wrong going on with the characters' cheeks whenever they tried to smile, but I agree that it generally looks better than ME:A's choppy, robotic movements.
As much as I dislike DA2, it probably has the best facial animations out of all bioware games.

Bioware games tend to ricycle animations from all their previous titles and some of them even became famous and well-known, like the "turn around with your hands up in the air" one or "the scratching chest" one or even the "walking back and forth" one.

But I'm pretty sure the romance scenes were made from scratch, the animators were praised for them because they looked natural and better than usual and there were many beautiful details in them if you used flycam (Solas' is probably the best one and you see he and Lavellan hold each other's hands for the whole time).

All DA needs is to bring back the feeling that Origins gave. You and 3 other nobodies attempted to unite the country to fight a war on 2 fronts. Inquisition never gave any feeling of growth or journey that Origins did. Sure you get a better castle, but after that nothing happens. There's no sense of progression or growth. Not much games have really captured the feeling of a typical hero overcomes huge odds as much as Origins did.

I've replayed DAO a couple of times and I have issues as well as things I loved about it.

Its world building was done much better than ME1, the important bits are more in the background and it keeps the world feeling large since so much of it is more alluded to than overtly displayed. It still felt fairly restricted for the size it wanted to convey but it was well done where it counted.

I'm not sure where you found a sense of progression in Origin where Inquisition lacked it, it seemed about the same for me personally. The only thing that Origins did better was make your progression matter at the end but the actual sense of it up to that point was about the same (it would have been nice to actually be able to allocate resources in a way that was less one dimensional in Inquisition).

The issue that Origins had in my book was that it was marketed as a Dark Fantasy game and the darkest it gets is sometimes bad things happen to okay people. No game that has a 'best' ending is considered dark in my book.

Inquisition would have generally been better if the organization building was closer to MGSV's. Soldiers get sent out on missions with gear you actually end up requisitioning for them, and that gear affects how the missions go, sometimes in subtle percentage differences and at other times it's divergent differences.

Origins was mostly liked, from what I can gather, because it was the first story-RPG from a major dev in something like 5 years or so. Its story is solid but it's pretty standard Tolkien fodder, it just gave you some choice in the matter of certain decisions.

If I had to remake the games today, I'd try to do a real Action-CRPG type system for Origins, a Yakuza style deal for DA2 and something like For Honor combat, MGSV Base-building for Inquisition.

Honestly, Inquisition was about on the level of Origins for me in terms of enjoyment per hour of gameplay.

Well in Inquisition it's only about 10 hours in the game and you're already leading your whole army. And then nothing really happens after that. In Origins you're constantly gaining new companions, and alliances with groups of people. I just enjoyed the slow growth of your side in Origins, but in Inquisition you're thrown everything your way within 20 hours. Cory is a pathetic attempt at a villain and is objectively evil. Loghain is 50/50 on whether or not he is evil and is always a threat despite being just a human. Also the """"blight""""" in Inquisition is laughable, giant buttholes open up and shit out skeletons. In Origins there's always this feeling that your are not the only one's growing. Both the darkspawn and loghain are always doing shit throughout the game and you are constantly reminded of it. But of course I have my criticisms with Origins, but most still haven't changed with Inquisition. First and foremost there's not much writing effort put into a lot of the side characters. Of course you got your companions but aside from them not much is put into anybody else. This is probably my only problem that gets remedied in Inquisition. Referring to Origins. This is fixed in Inquisition. The music doesn't serve the game justice, it's very, very generic for what this game has in it. There's about 3 soundracks that stand out to me and one of them is played over 30% of your time in the game. Inquisition did a good job with it's soundtrack and it's main theme especially.

I agree that in Inquisition you progress more quickly but that's also because your goals and starting point are larger and more complex than in Origins.
Origins has a pretty straightforward goal: enact the Grey Warden Treaties, fight and stop the Archdemon.

Each treaty has its own arc and nuances but its pretty straightforward in that way.
Thematically, there's two big differences between how Origins and Inquisition work.

First off, the Inquisition is already being built by Cassandra by the time you start the game, so it has some resources already.
Second, the main crux of Inquisition's side quests and main quests is that you're trying to build alliances at the highest positions of power. You're playing a political game as well as a physical ground war.

I actually take issue with your point about the Blight in Inquisition and Origins. Origins makes it seem like the Blight is this time-sensitive thing but you can go fucking about with side quests for hours and the only time there's a time-sensitive event is that first town you go into after Ostagar.

Inquisition's biggest sin is not letting us see and command more of the main forces of our army and combating the other factions at a tactical/strategic level, it's all left to the advisers. But generally it's understood that there are multiple skirmishes and occupations occurring.

Inquisition is still not a great game in my book but Origins had tons of its own issues, it had its own story-gameplay disconnects and just poor design decisions.

I'd put the fundamental nature of progression in both as follows:
Origins
>Start off as nobody with some political pull, use treaties to build an alliance culminating in final fight with Big Bad
Inquisition

It's probably the best interpretation of MGSV I've personally seen.

I've always disliked the pleb notion that "Venom goes crazy! Big Boss is still the good guy!" because it plays right into the fetishization of Big Boss' legend and against all the themes in the series.

After reading that essay, I really felt like something incredibly clever was done with MGSV, taking advantage of the out-of-game hype and mythology built around Naked Snake and Big Boss as characters, partially due to how popular MGS3 was compared to every other game in the series

I didn't mind the lyrium addiction thing, it's an aspect of the whole templar shebang I find quite interesting, and I think it works well with what little we saw of Cullen. The problem for me was that they didn't really do much with it. The personal conflict and consequences just felt quite insubstantial particularly and it was exacerbated how soppy and fluffy the romance was, as you said. I would have liked if they'd brought a little more of his prickly personality into it instead of having him go marshmallow from the first time you speak to him. I'd love to play as the ex-Inquisitor again, only that this time they are just Trevelyan/Lavellan/Adaar/Cadash and have a cool prosthetic arm based on their class and specialization. (let's be honest, even if you didn't disband the Inquisition, Orlais and the Chantry won't let you do anything else)

Iirc Bioware already worked on animations for one-armed characters, specifically for Bull, who in fact was supposed to have a prosthetic arm that could be turned into a gaatlok cannon.

Also Bioware confirmed that the Inquisitor didn't lose their arm to show they couldn't fight anymore, but simply to show that closing Rifts/repairing the Veil wouldn't be a thing anymore.

Making a character lose a part of their body or powers, "resetting" them, is actually a cool way to introduce them as the main character again, because it justifies the need to relearn everything again, sort of like it happened to Shepard in ME2 (where they DIE and come back to life) and ME3 (six months of house arrest).

I don't think we will get to play as the Inquisitor again. Everything in the final cutscene tells us that the Inquisitor, Cassandra, Leliana and Harding are going to search for a new protagonist and form a new organization in Tevinter Imperium. I bet they will all became advisors to the next protag. And Bioware won't be able to bring back the Inquisitor as an npc, so he will go missing and Dorian would take his place as an advisor. He will communicate with the Inquisitor through the message crystal.

Solas knows how the Inquisitor operates, all his tactics. And they cannot magically restore his left arm, not even with the lyrium excuse. Prosthetic arm makes sense in Mgs5 and Mass Effect because they have access to modern and future technology.

Up until Inquisition it was always about how the events at the tower traumatized him to the point where he went full Nazi, and DA2 was about him learning that his hatred was misguided and that most templars weren't the perfect protectors he thought they were. If anything I would've expected him to be the one to lose his faith and go "Fuck it, everyone's horrible, so let's side with this guy who might actually do something about it" after the shit he's seen. It almost makes me feel like his and Samson's stories got swapped halfway through writing.

I do know what you mean, though. I don't even really mind the initial focus on lyrium addiction, I just wish I actually got the sense that he was struggling with it. You get one flag to tell him whether or not to start taking it again, he shrugs it off, and then the whole thing is just swept under the rug so he can make eyes at your Inquisitor for the rest of the game. I don't mean to keep going back to Samson as a point of comparison, but I think it would've had a lot more impact if you'd gone through this with a character who had been established as suffering from a severe lyrium addiction, because it'd be that much more meaningful for him to break it and there could be more opportunities to actually explore it in a less "easy" light. But I guess it's ultimately that Cullen is a safe love interest and scraggly, wolfish older men don't sell as well.

- or allow the slavec rebellion dissolve the Tevinter Imperium, and replacing it with a series of Tevinter Republics (FULL REVOLUTION ENDING).

That's a fair point. Arc focus aside, I think the fluff hurts Cullen more than anything as a character. Everything's too easily resolved and it's just scads of teeth-rotting sweetness and light. The only other character I can think of in this series who was like that is Alistair, and even he had more genuine dark moments.
