Basically it's looking at the data that the key decrypts and it's expecting to find certain data at a certain byte location

Let's say 0x20-30 contains a 16 byte FST value

Assuming the key was correct, it would decrypt data in this area that would have the actual FST info, which would probably be between 100-10000 depending on the game. Since the key is wrong, the data here is being decrypted into a garbage value, usually very big. However, it could also be very small because it's completely random. Getting a small value is not a sign you're close to the key. It just means the random data at that location was small instead of large. It's still random garbage data.
