man that was pretty quick, there was some talk, I did some work for 45 minutes or so, came back and we were faulted. That's not even deadgenre material in my book...it's middle of a Tuesday, people should mostly be at school and work such that the board slows down, but I guess there are enough NEETs screeching at one another over League of Counterwatch in the other threads to drown stuff out.

Invisibility is really good in Spider's Nest. Only things with see invisible are Entropy Weavers (confusable), Arachne (confusable) and Demonic Crawlers (dazzleable). Easiest rune for an enchanter by far. Invisibility makes Orc easy too. Don't forget to let the contamination time out after each use, Ghost Moths are a big problem if you can't safely cast it.

What's the point of Charms in DCSS currently?

Haste got removed, Repel Missiles got removed, THE two spells you trained Charms for. Getting Regeneration was always an afterthought from getting RMsl. Now that it's gone, what's the point of ever bothering with Charms?

- Infusion - absolute horseshit only in the game so that Skalds have a starting spell.
- Shroud of Golubria - slightly less of a horseshit existing for the same reason as the above
- Swiftness - "that spell you should have but won't use more often than once in 50 games"
- Ozocubu's Armor - probably the only good one
- Regeneration - a waste of XP on most characters you'd bother casting it with, better invest in some ranged weapon instead
- Spectral Weapon - again, only a few characters will bother
- Excruciating Wounds - literally a meme flavor spell
>level 5
nice waste of xp there
- Deflect Missiles
>level 6
lel
- Ring of Flames
>level 7
actually not that bad
- Death's Door
to quote tavern: if you have a character able to cast this spell, you shouldn't need it anymore

Remove Charms already, what are they even doing in this game? Do we need a trap for newbies or something? But even that is already fulfilled by Poison Magic.

devs plz

I want to but after reading that you're not supposed to actually clear out each floor I'm at a bit of a loss
How do you actually go about diving
>>
>>168357970
>how do you dive
step one see >
step two walk to >
step three press > key

just have some monster detection and emergency consumables so you can deal with scary OOD shit by running away from it instead of dying to it
>>
>>168358193
So just go as deep as possible, grab everything of value on your way to the next downstairs, and tele as soon as you see something threatening
I can do this!
>>
>>168358570
once you have a rod of detect monsters or something

in the early game, before you get one, there's more of an art to knowing how deep you can safely get without being in trouble

but still, you advance a lot faster in levels etc if you are on the deepest level you can safely be at.

it's about finding a floor depth range in which you want to be fighting (generally, as deep as you can survive without constantly needing to burn up high tier consumables), not about clearing a particular floor.
>>
>>168358570
buying ?Detect Monster, ?Teleport, ?Phase, and !CureCritical helps a ton early on, giving you information, survivability, and options.
>>
>>168359319
yeah basically
it has to be deep enough to have good loot but not so deep that you can't actually defeat the enemies without spending consumables

Honestly anon play however you want to play, don't feel like you have to play the way people tell you, it's just fucking sad. If you want to clear out each floor, you clear out each floor, simple as that. Hell I still do that, it's hardly 'optimal' sure but if you care more about that than you do freedom or fun, you've got some issues son.

greetings love
I have not done undead warlock yet myself, but I assume you're more casty and less hitty? Make sure to bring plenty of detection and healing to the bottom floor, and liberally re-generate it by reaching it via different stairs, or by recalling to reset the dungeon until you get a layout where you don't have to be in sight of a ton of caster 'p's at once while trying to kill the boss. If you're using recall to reset, make sure to set your recall point to floor 14, to prevent appearing in a bad spot in the middle of the bossfloor. Watch out, he often has a berserker in his initial band of friends, and one of those can easily fuck you up if it reaches you. It could even be worth delaying the bossfight for a bit, since casters often have some trouble, given that the boss starts with and summons a bunch of ranged damaging disablers (mages/mindcrafters/priests). If you have stone to mud, you can dig a zigzag tunnel as an anti-summoning corridor ("ASC") so you aren't in sight of lots of guys.

You should probably open up Morivant and Telmora soon. You can likely handle the quest monster on Angband 6...all the Angband quest floor bosses are guaranteed to drop an at least 'ego' quality item so you can hope for something useful there. Similarly, you can handle the initial few stages in the Telmora town arena for some devices. Then, once you've beaten the Stronghold boss, probably start adventuring in Orc Caves. The boss is +10 speed so you will want !Speed of your own, then kite him with phase door and ranged magic once you separate him from his entourage (they are only +0 speed so you should be able to draw him off).

gl
>>
>>168357970
>>168361169
yeah this is true. You certainly *can* clear floors and that's totally fine. Rather, the point more is that, unlike crawl, you aren't losing out on anything in the long term by leaving a floor behind. So if you're in danger, for example, just leave.
>>
>>168361225

Thanks for the tip love. I clear angband 6 and got a broken sword of chaos. worth using i think for the resist cold and chaos cause i never melee shit anyway. what does mark of chaos do? now its back to stronghold to try and clear floor 15.
>>168361652
also thanks for the tips on mapping. I have detect living and detect undead which while not as good as detect monsters does basically the same thing in the stronghold with all the p's
>>
>>168363098
mark of chaos means it randomly jumps between different types of brands and slays, weighted towards ones that will work on your target. It's in general one of the best brands, though since a broken sword's base damage dice are small (assuming yours didn't get some ludicrous dice boosting on generation) and brands are multipliers to dice, it will be only okay and not stellar on that front.
>>
>>168355448

No but please show next turn.
>>
>>168364709
gaining levels, increasing your casting stat (Chr), wearing items with <+15%> (or whatever value) to mana

some classes such as mage lose maximum mana by wearing too much (level-dependant) amounts of armor, not sure if warlocks fall into that category though

also some classes (again such as mage) reduce mana pool if they're wearing non-dexterity-adding non-free-action gloves, again not sure if warlocks care about that though
>>
>>168364709
also potions of clarity can be quaffed to recover some mana

>>168366836
one nice thing about those guys is all 3 are very good at equipment-wearing

I mean they aren't as great at wearing magey items, but in general casters have a lot more restrictions. Also they are all regular-shaped, so they get the standard slots instead of the "my gimmick is lots of boots and no arms" or whatever that some monster races have
>>
>>168366836
I can vouch for tonberry blood knight being fun. I've gotten to the midgame with them too.

Also i'll throw in my recommendation for Demigod of Zeus Warrior. If you're feeling a "standard" hit dudes and be hella good at hitting dudes and doesn't afraid of nothing, it can take you places. leveling is pretty slow tho.

droid is pretty strong and can be fun, though it has some annoying aspects. Your levels early on come in huge chunks as you find good drops. You get an intrinsic attack spell that's pretty good and levels up with you, gain bonus AC per level (quite strong but subtle, hard to notice the effect), and since it would mess with droid xp stuff you are completely immune to racial polymorph and statswap.

It's rude to kill things that are napping.

You can turn off the virtue system in birth options, though I found the game seemed a little dull without those messages for some reason. I'm not sure if they actually do anything of consequence.

Also, holy fuck I forgot how hard DE sorceror darkness storms hit. Went into the arena without thinking and would've died if I didn't coincidentally have a pair of healing pots.
>>
>>168378693
>I'm not sure if they actually do anything of consequence.
they have a very wide variety of mild effects, including influencing such things as accuracy, number of items spawned, or (with chance virtue) getting better effects out of Wonder. But outside of the chance/wonder thing the effects are quite mild in magnitude. I wouldn't worry about min-maxing for them. Agreed that the flavor is nice even though the message spam gets annoying later on, when the messages are already long.

though if you do play with virtues on you can enjoy getting some...compassion (I think) virtue by using a wand of heal monster on a town leper to cure him.

if you want to see literally all the virtue effects, here's the search for it. In each of the files returned by this search, do your own text search for "virtue_current" (since it often will appear in more than one place, but the search page linked will just select one part as a sample)

Okay, I'm a Really Bad Day Shower Victim. I've got to find a first aid kit within 12 hours or I die from infection.

I've checked the Pharmacy, but there were no kits there. I checked the doctor offices, but if there were any kits there they're in the vaults. I broke the consoles trying to access the vaults, so I guess I have to break through the walls somehow.

Is there any location on this map that's likely to have good bashing weapons? That museum has already be checked.

There are a couple vehicles with M60 turrets operating on them; one with everyone but a battery. I've found a garage with a "storage battery (60000);" would that work to get it operational? I ask because I noticed that some stray bullets from one of the M60 turrets took down a wall, and I'm hoping to repeat that feat at one of the nearby doctor offices.

Alternatively, aside from the doctor offices and pharmacy, are there any other locations that are likely to have a first aid kit?
>>
>>168381296

It actually lists the spell failure effects now on your character sheet. Notably good aligned death or demon priests (which you inevitably end up with since killing everything makes you good apparently) get up to 10% penalty.

>>168381359
>are there any other locations that are likely to have a first aid kit?
Ambulances in the street, and rarely house bathrooms. Antibiotics will work as well, if you find any of those.

> I've found a garage with a "storage battery (60000);" would that work to get it operational?
Yes, but you'd need mechanics skill and probably a welder to install it, which I assume you don't have.

If you find any kind of working car you could try using it as a battering ram to get into the locked rooms, though make sure it has a seat belt or you'll probably just kill yourself.

Is PCB's Lucky personality useful?
I mean, I usually find a hefty amount of randarts even without it.
The only time it might be worth the -2 to all stats is with unique specific artifacts, since ya one get one shot at those...
>>
>>168385453
It's mostly useful for being one of the personalities with high skill bonuses, and -2 stats is far better than sexy's aggravation.

I don't think the drops thing is anything noticeable considering how random it is to begin with.

>>168385453
lucky is pretty nice, it gives a good initial boost to pretty much all the skills (including melee) and it makes you find items as though you were 10 levels deeper IIRC, which is pretty nice, especially for finding that first good weapon. In the late game it's generally still very feasible to max or nearly max your important stats.

in terms of min/maxing, the best personalities are probably lucky for the items and mighty/patient for the 102% personality liferating. Sexy is fun but aggravation is pretty serious. Lazy is extremely painful but has the cute lazy 3 artifacts plan "eventually". Fearless is actually pretty good IMO despite the 98% life, since the stats are decent and rFear is actually legit. Combat is...fine. Nimble has 99% life, which I don't like but it's still reasonable to take. Hasty is pretty good. I have not been able to think up a sufficient non-roleplay justification for shrewd or craven.

I mean, aren't stat pots pretty rare? I've only found 3-4 since I've started playing...
>>
>>168386215
yeah I've thought about it maybe being okay on hybrids or melees that already have good hp but need help on that side of things.
For a noncaster like warrior I'd just go with lucky though, nearly as good a devices bonus and not wasting the casting improvement.

>>168386262
The skills from personality are flat bonuses rather than per-level, so overall they're not that important, but skill in devices and stealth, and to a slightly lesser degree melee (or shooting for those classes) are still quite valuable. Yes stat pots are fairly rare, but in the long run if you survive you'll end up maxing your internal stats and then not picking up stat pots any more. In order to push up from "well my internal stats are capped but I'm not at the 18/220 maximum yet" you need to wear +stat equipments.

>>
>>168397834
Well dual wielding lets you use two weapons at once with more potential damage but much worse accuracy (and you need good dual-wield skill)

It's pretty bad for a Tonberry though -- their racial thing gives them a big increase to damage per hit but decreased number of blows. When they dual-wield, both weapons get the full blows penalty but they only get half the damage bonus each.

I fetched a shitty metal shield from the town for now. Didn't expect dual-wield to work like that, but I guess it's relatively logical.

Isn't one of the psion final powers to shit on monster spellcasting?
>>
>>168428352
Yeah, but
a) it costs a shitton of mana against 50+ monsters
a1)Mana you can't regen since that's the OTHER final psion power
b)it can be dispelled by 70+ monsters (hello yes this is black reaver how can I help you), leaving you with a completely depleted mana bar and no defenses
c) It lasts less than ten turns at its highest power
C2) good luck recasting that
>>
>>168428352
the psion can choose one of several pretty OP powers at level 50

-Mindspring: Basically infinite mana. You can buff up with this and then spam psi storms every turn and stay at full sp.
-Mental Fotress: makes you totally immune to dispel-magic and anti-magic (and stat drain for some reason?), and buffs spellpower by up to 35% while active
-Psionic Foresight: You have a massive chance (up to 65% or something?) to "see that one coming" and completely avoid any incoming damage.
-Disruption: Monsters that try to cast any spell around you have a massive chance to fail.
>>
>>168428723

yes but dispel-magic is a spell and so can be blocked by disruption

Fortress is total immunity. You are thinking about disruption.

With Disruption monsters can only cast if 1d(monsterlevel) > 1d(player level + 8*disruptionlevel)

What's a decent place to grind out some gear? My resist are decent (aside from a conspicuous hole at rDark), but I don't do enough damage to deal with high AC enemies. I was killing ancient dragons south of Zul for a bit, but that netted barely any weapons at all, let alone good ones. For reference, everything there was dying reasonably quickly except ancient multihueds, dracolisks, and Hrus.

I was doing Mountain at 45ish before, but wasn't having any luck there either. Would (glass?) Castle be a good bet? Anti-magic cave? I don't get to this point of PCB very often.

My centipede can't drink potions in the arena, I found that out early on. Chances are I'm not going back there til very near end game, given the next opponent is a GWoP - seriously how are you supposed to beat one in the arena without a source of healing?!

If your stealth and detection is good, you could try dragon's lair and picking loot off the floor and off the easier dragons. You'll have to watch out for wyrms and uniques and such, though. That's my usual midgame goal once I can get past the dracolisk, though I've never played a death sword that far to know how well it works for them.

Probably not as well, since you're not looking for single strong upgrades like other characters.

Damage is not great. Just under 600 health, 110 AC, only reusable healing is _cure wounds and _curing, about a dozen !healing, ~50 !curing, plenty of !speed + activated heroic speed on an otherwise garbage ring.

I can reliably kill AMHDs, but two would be a bit dicey. AMHD + ancient single hued dragons are still fine.
>>
>>168438272
I'm playing a Tanar'ri, actually; was specifying weapons because I think they're my biggest gear weakness at the moment.

I did dragon lair for a bit and stopped mainly because I couldn't dent wyrms. Cherry picking ancients and the like seems potentially doable.
>>
>>168438497
Wait, what are you? I figured death sword since you wanted weapons, but.

If you've never worshipped Jiyva before, I wouldn't recommend it. Of course, if you're OK with an early death, it's fine to test Jiyva out and see why they're a tough early-game god.

Basically, their jellies will eat everything on the ground -- including shit you haven't touched yet. Jiyva is better in late game where you can carry most of your important items and better care for anything on the ground; in the early game, you'll be racing to finish levels so that shit doesn't get destroyed forever.

Overall, it's not worth it. Meme god for only one main purpose (making Slime a snooze fest).

monsters can only open doors from melee range, so door creation is great as a LOS blocker to stop you from getting breathed or manastormed on
similar idea to ?fog in crawl

if there's a door between you, a monster's only options are "walk close enough to open it" or "breathe disint"
so if e.g. a dragon breathes on you from far off, you can put up doors, jerk off your staff of cure wounds a few dozen times, then open it up again and have full hp to reset the fight

>New God : Ralph
>Demon Prince of Apathy

http://s-z.org/neil/git/?p=crawl.git;a=commitdiff;h=d69f00c381e9b7850a5a4bd0a143dbb8db72da1f;hp=f56736b52f286704f8334724844c56c1d9b1c833

Ralph

Ralph is the Demon Prince of Apathy, appointed to his position by a
cruel superior tired of his lazy ways.
He sits on a rock somewhere deep in the Abyss, where lesser demons
throws rocks at him when they are bored.
So powerful is Ralph that even the rocks, in midflight, get bored
and lose the will to finish flying towards him, and fall gently
to the ground. Lugonu would certainly expel him from his domain,
were he able to bring himself to bother with such a meaningless
underling.
%%%%
Ralph powers

Ralph's intense uncaring is contagious, and those that decide to
try to worship him find themselves also able to weather any change
around them without feeling compelled to react to it. They also
find themselves wandering slower than normal, without any real
drive to move quickly to any particular destination. There might
be other consequences, but who can be be bothered to find them?
%%%%
Ralph wrath

Ralph doesn't feel wrath. Ralph might not have even noticed you
following him in the first place, should you decide to abandon
Ralph. There's no penalty for leaving Ralph, much like there was
no benefit to following him in the first place.

>>168468994

>>
>>168469160
That's for the player hitting monsters, I'm pretty sure.

AC both reduces the chance of being hit, and directly reduces damage from normal (so not 'hits to burn' or whatever) attacks. At 150 ac you reach the maximum reduction of 60%, though more will make you harder to hit in the first place (you can see this with the town service, too).

Also, influenza is broken or something; long after it passed I repeatedly got and repeatedly lost Nausea. Incidentally, Nausea is suffering; you fill yourself up because you're famished, then you vomit it all up twenty minutes later and get a huge morale penalty to boot.

Minute 10: Oh god, I'm just a regular guy who found a mysterious door somewhere, let's open it to see what's inside
Minute 20: Holy shit this is dangerous, how do I get out of here
Minute 30: Protag reaches the Temple learns he can only escape by getting the orb, chooses his god (preferably femme-Xom)
Minute 40: Protag gets into his most deadly situation yet (ogre, unseen horror)
Minute 50: Protag finds a dangerous trapped vault with a magic item inside (could be ring of invisibility, some wand, anything really)
Minute 60: setpiece battle with fierce enemy like Lerny or a hell sentinel or Mennas or an electric golem
Minute 70: Another setpiece battle, take your pick of uniques
Minute 80: Zot entrance guarded by Tiamat or some zottish enemy
Minute 90: Orb of Zot guarded by orbs of fire and zot traps
Minute 100: protag grabs orb, dungeon goes crazy, he runs as fast as he can through all the previous locations with orbs, other enemies following
Minute 110: End, protag and Xom have sex or something
After-credits scene: Pan lords are shown in a council discussing how best to retrieve the orb - sequel involves sucking the protag into the postgame areas

you can incorporate runes and armor and Xom comic relief in there as necessary

For crawl at what shield skill level should you change to a large shield? Assuming both are unenchanted. Im a fighter vine stalker and I found a large shield on first floor but im not sure its worth equipping now.
>>
>>168485987
Encumbrance is not based on the weight of your inventory, but the weight of your EQUIPPED items.
Casters don't like heavy armor.
Note that encumbrance only reduces your max sp, it doens't increase fail rates. It can be worth it if you have good armor that puts you slightly over.

Oh yeah also, certain classes (like mages) need their hands to make gestures for their spells, so gloves that don't give dexterity or free action will also give encumbrance because they get in the way of spellcasting.

[15:27] <+Lasty> !tell pleasingfungus Further, because your char is weak, you do often need to jump to recover from the frequent bad situations you get into, and when jump dicks you over (which it is designed to do) that quickly turns a bad situation into a crisis.

So I just started playing One Way Heroics after seeing it mentioned here a few times, but I feel like I'm missing something. I've had literally one playthrough, reached level 14 (got like 6 levels for killing a goat), the game has said I did quite well but I didn't understand much of anything. Information is plastered haphazardly around the screen, with my hp slapped in the middle, and the stuff I actually want to know (like an indicator of remaining enemy health) is nowhere to be found. On top of that everything I found was worse than what I started with, chests were impossible to open, and practically nothing happened in my 173km run but I was told the boss happens at 400km.... what gives?!

Someone please explain because I want to give this game a chance and not immediately hate it but I'm finding it hard right now.
>>
>>168511531
>Information is plastered haphazardly around the screen, with my hp slapped in the middle
You can change where that goes in the options.
>and the stuff I actually want to know (like an indicator of remaining enemy health) is nowhere to be found.
Enemy HP shows up above their heads when you attack them, as a small green/red bar.
>On top of that everything I found was worse than what I started with,
That's just how it tends to be. Your starting equipment is decent overall for just about any class just because of the durability being high. You'll find something else lying around that's stronger maybe, but chances are it'll be less durable.
>chests were impossible to open
You can use the lockpicking skill if you're an adventurer or got it with a perk. Otherwise, you can use an axe to break it open, or the Knight/Swordmaster's bash.
>and practically nothing happened in my 173km run but I was told the boss happens at 400km
The Demon Lord only showing up at 400km is something that only happens if you're playing easy mode. In easy mode, the 400km mark is set so that until that point, you're free to somewhat safely gain levels and get better equipment in preparation for the easy fight. If you want things to actually be more eventful, stop playing on easy.
If you happen to be playing Mystery Chronicle OWH instead of the original, you can disregard everything I said pretty much because I have no idea about what goes on in that version.
>>
Started playing PRIME. Went with a human space marine for my first character since it seemed like it would be straightforward. Leveled to 6, died after a facehugger 'sploded out of my chest.

Is there any way to get rid of them after they impregnate you or are they a "you lose in a certain number of rounds, period" thing?
>>
>>168511531
>6 levels for killing a goat
Goats are Fluffy Animals. Fluffy Animals are a class of monsters that won't attack you, and give you good stuff/lots of levels for killing them. But if you kill too many of them, the normally indifferent Jade Forest (read: tree-hugging hippie rangers) will start trying to kill you, and their lieutenants are extremely powerful. It's a kinda high risk/high reward thing; I find it more trouble than it's worth.

>game said I did quite well
Yeah, the game's scoring metrics are pretty off. You're not really missing much by ignoring it, for the most part.

>information plastered haphazardly
You can switch that around in the options menu if you want to. Thing is, though, it can be one of those games where you're looking at the HUD just as much as the main screen, especially if you're using the map to navigate. I tried switching it around for a bit, but ended up going back to the default so that I had a better awareness of around-my-character without needing to look back and forth all the time.

>indicator of enemy health
been a while since I've played, so I can't say much on this one. But a quick load-up indicates that it shows you (briefly) how injured an enemy is when you hit it? Probably not ideal for a lot of people, but it tends not to matter for the most part. You'll far more often be one-shotting or disengaging than you'll need to keep track of enemy HP. It can be frustrating when you don't know the monster types well, but it gets better with experience/intuition.

>equipment worse than starter
a lot of classes actually have pretty decent starting gear. But there are a few things to consider. Managing item durability can be important on some runs, so it might be worth using the weaker stuff so that you'll still have the strong stuff when you really need it. Axes are good for attacking chests/walls/skeletons, so it might be worth carrying one even if it's weaker than your sword. (more...)
>>
>>168512703
>You can change where that goes in the options
The only thing I can see in the options is volume and button config, and a couple of other things that definitely aren't about moving stuff around
Does enemy HP only show on those tiny little bars for that fraction of a second?
I got a slender spear but it broke almost immediately, which just seems retarded
I managed to smash open an extravagant chest by going berserk and bashing it, but it just had silver inside....
Something mentioned about dungeons, so maybe that's what I'm missing here? How do I get to a dungeon?
>>
>>168513589
A lot of equipment can be unidentified, both in terms of power and durability. With carrying capacity being a huge concern, there are a lot of times when you'll have to choose if it's worth carrying something that may or may not be good. Like you experienced >>168513728
, you can find good stuff that's already worn down to near breaking.

>options
you can scroll down in there. It should be just below the button configs, something about 'gauge placement'

>chests
have (I think) a certain flat damage reduction. It gets far easier to break them with higher strength / better weapons / axes, and certain classes can just lockpick them open. Some will have just money, some equipment. It varies, but they're color coded in terms of rough quality. It's hardly necessary to open them, but probably worth it if it's convenient. Very rarely from certain chests you can even find stat-boosting items.

>dungeons
aren't as impressive as they sound. They show up randomly on the map, just buildings with a bunch of monsters and some chests. Quick loot/xp if you can handle them, avoid them if you can't. They rarely have anything worth risking death over.
>>
>>168513728
>The only thing I can see in the options is volume and button config, and a couple of other things that definitely aren't about moving stuff around
I forgot that being able to move around UI elements isn't in the base game, its only in OWH+.
>Does enemy HP only show on those tiny little bars for that fraction of a second?
Yes.
>I got a slender spear but it broke almost immediately, which just seems retarded
That's because you picked up a low durability weapon.
>I managed to smash open an extravagant chest by going berserk and bashing it, but it just had silver inside....
You shouldn't need to use Berserk, just use Bash or an axe. Also, when you break open a chest, you destroy some of the items inside.
>Something mentioned about dungeons, so maybe that's what I'm missing here? How do I get to a dungeon?
Dungeons are just scattered about the world. If you have an Area Map active, they show up as red squares on the mini-map. There's a small variety of layouts to them.

Ascii: Low maintenance, tends to look good regardless because of different fonts
Tiles: High maintenance, can look like ass if you don't put a lot of effort in making them (see: demon).

DCSS has great tiles, but it's a huge game with tons of contributors. That means they have people doing things for free.
Without money or popularity, you don't get good tiles without a lot of effort from a single person, which means *very* slow updates, which means less popularity...
It's really a dog chasing its tail. Te only way to deal with it is to start as ascii for free and only afterwards add tiles when you have people doing it for free. But that really needs a lot of people doing it just for the love of it.

We will not discuss of paid roguelikes, for they are a blasphemy in the eyes of our lord.

also roguelite generals die because there's nothing to discuss. Anything interesting is usually just in vein of "look how powerful this is" or "look how these 2 items interact" which is featured on the promo ads. Any questions would be better served by googling it an getting an answer in 0.6 seconds. The only thing left to discuss would be mods, which is essentially non-existent save Isaac, and that's its own disaster.

An axe-using HOMo is surprisingly strong. I think my third win ever was HOMo^Chei, where I was cleaving the fuck out of everything.

Ghouls are fun to use for 3 to 5 rune games -- extended can be a bit trickier if you aren't good at dealing with Dispel Undead. But otherwise, mutation resistance and, to a lesser degree, torment resistance make the scariest/randomest parts of a 3 rune game (and Abyss and Slime) pretty much non-existent.

IMO, you should care less about backgrounds and more about diversifying your choice of god.

It's very straightforward, memorize stone arrow ASAP and get its hunger to 0 and spell failure to 1% so you can use it against enemies with actual health and AC.
Petrify and LRD is a very fun way to deal heavy and aoe damage if you just can't find iron shot and shatter. LCS is also nice for desperately trying to take down one strong opponent.

Just dump all your stat points on INT, remember to level fighting and your defensive abilities by midgame and you'll easily end up being a caster with nearly 50 AC and 200 HP.

Cure Mutation/benemut is gone (replaced with potion of mutation, which removes 2d3 mutations, adds 1d3 random mutations, and then add a good one.

'p'rayer is gone since it was too much like other roguelikes or something. (they actually felt that having one key for one use that you need very few times in a normal game was too much)

Amulets of resist mutation are gone.

Restore abilities and sustain abilities (even Demigod's, yes) is gone.

Stasis is gone except for Formicids.

@ giving you a general description of some stats, and ] listing your equipment and empty slots is gone.

Lots of wands were removed, including Fireball (which was replaced by blue & cold-damage fireball; innovative!)

Warding was removed.

Clarity was removed.

Warp Weapon was removed.

You can dual-wield daggers if you want to. There are also a few other dagger-like weapons that you can use.

I don't believe that drop rate, you big liar. And con is very useful at all levels (though less so at low levels clearly) because enemy damage works on a curve, whereas player damage doesn't. Improving your total HP by 25% is far more meaningful than improving your damage by 25%, because enemy damage has caps/breakpoints beyond which they're no longer a threat. If an ancient fire dragon breathes for 150 damage each time, then increasing your 300 HP to 400 HP is far more important than increasing your damage from 150 to 200. This is most important in the breathey midgame where you can jump into dragon's lair or even R'lyeh so long as you can withstand enemy breath attacks.

>>
>>168556015
At what level? You're oversimplifying.

I stand by my point that a melee character is best served by distributing to str/dex/con roughly evenly, because con potions just do not drop as often, and the melee damage bonus to stats literally, LITERALLY does not matter for most characters.

The best way to do it is to focus on one stat at a time until 18/50ish, since you get more efficient stat gain per point between 18/00 and around 18/50

as for con: pic related is the actual multiplier to your maxhp you get for each con value

a character with 18/220 has 2x as much hp as a character with 3 con

a character with 18/110 has 1.23x as much hp as a character with 16 con

there is (usually) some nice reasoning for the ascii characters chosen to represent things, e.g. p is for people and looks like a stickfigure head on a body, so therefore P is for giant, u and U are lesser and greater demons and look like horns, etc.

but the short answer is no, there is not currently a good pcb tileset.

It is actually a stronger version with a bigger speed bonus.

>>

if they don't stack, which one overrides which? the class ability overrides the racial one?

actually nevermind it appears that it DOES stack

ninja quickwalk reduces the time cost to (45-level/2)% of a turn
demigod quickwalk reduces it to 60%

so with both together a level 50 demigod ninja will take only 12% of a turn to walk one space

As a breath-realm dragon? It's about on par with a wand of rockets or something.

Anyways my point is that a class that breezes through 99% of the game but needs to get a few -rockets for the serpent is better than a class that struggles through 99% of the game but beats the serpent easily.

I like it quite a bit, because of years of playing vanilla where you can literally beat the entire game with energy management to constantly firstmove (or doublemove if you want to be super patient) everything. In PCB if I'm trying to dance around a set of scary things with, say, teleport other, it actually feels scary (even though you still abuse the knights-move LOS to get 2 chances every time you attempt a TO), whereas in vanilla a single wand of TO, a base speed of +10, and a speed potion is literally all you need to beat the entire game.

Best I've done yet (only ever gotten to lair 3 before this). finished D15, lair, mines, and got to snape 3. really feel like i'm getting the hang of this.

choked right after this on saint rohka though. he kept smiting me until i was out of health pots, and I couldn't get away fast enough, even with boots of running. Shame. Should I have done shoals first? Snake was pretty tough, and I found myself getting hungry as shit, and stairdancing like a madman to deal with nagas.
>>
>>168605858
they're *already* really strong
my point is just that it's nice to know you can be surprised, such that the best you can get is "mostly in control" rather than wholly in control of a situation, in turn incentivizing what oook poster Ingwe described as an alpine climbing approach to the dungeon, minimizing risk by progressing at a good clip (reducing turns spent in the dungeon), rather than trying to maintain a 100% grip on situations
>>
>>168606018
Shoals, specifically the last shoals, is far and away the hardest lair branch (aside from slime).

At least it was last time I played.
>>
>>168606118
>my point is just that it's nice to know you can be surprised

Yeah, but being doubleturned with two rockets is not a good experience. Or a fair one.

It really boils down to RNG bullshit in that case and I see many people not wanting to lose a 15+ hours character fighting supremely strong monsters (by the way the serpent casts rockets too and he too can doublerock you just because he can) even with the best setup means that one core part of the game is fundamentally flawed.

The usual Lair branch tier list (from easiest to most difficult) is Swamp, Spider=Snake, Shoals. Shoals might be more doable for a Merfolk and other amphibious species.

Things I'm noticing:
* 60k turns to get to Snake:3 seems really slow.
* XL 16 by Snake:3 is also kind of odd.

I realize you're playing an older version of Crawl, but those seem off.
>>
>>168606825
well yeah, the point being "lol I only died because this game is too randumbbb" is wrongheaded thinking that fails to dig into the decisionmaking context

Is there a possibility that you will just randomly die out of nowhere without having the opportunity to influence it during or beforehand? Sure, but it's astronomically tiny. You're more likely to be hit by lightning.

Elliptic never played <1000 HP chars.

>>168607039
Huh, I've always considered snake to be harder than shoal.
Also
>2 XP pots in DL4
Gee
>>
>>168607203
yeah here I think there's an issue with race/class hp stuff, in that, largely for flavor reasons AFAICT, the casters generally have sub-100% liferatings, and the caster races generally ALSO have sub-100% life, which really does mean that a doublemove can just kill you. Doesn't matter if you only have 1% fail on Rod of Angelic Healing in that case, ya know?
>>
>>168607325
Snake is pretty consistent in terms of threat. If you can take on naga warriors and maybe naga sharpshooters, it doesn't really get more difficult. The big difficult jump is with guardian serpents and then getting surrounded+constricted.

While the average foe in Shoals is a bit easier than the higher-end nagas, the most dangerous Shoals monsters (seen in Shoals:3) are quite a bit more dangerous than Snake equivalents. Merfolk javelineers > naga sharpshooters; Merfolk aquamancers > great nagas/nagarajas. And then Shoals has guaranteed uniques in it, along with a layout that heavily favors the monsters and not the player, due to both the water and the Airstrike users.
>>
>>168608270
(still me)
though to be fair, non-shit-hp lategame casters definitely are stronger than their melee counterparts due to their better control, what with better devicing, casting options, and more consistent damage (doesn't care about AC, only casting fail chance). It's not fun going through more agony to get there, but while casters may be more vulnerable to "shit the J double breathed" they are also less vulnerable to "crap I just failed teleport x3"

Not sure exactly what design solution would be best here, but it is definitely true that high HP melee killdudes that go off once they find their weapon is usually more fun than the caster alternatives, partly because of hp, equipment restrictions, stupid XP rates (though -R changes this latter one a good deal), etc.

How do people usually build their hybrids in DCSS?
Start with a fighter, dump points in INT and later train spellcasting? Start with a caster, then dump a few points in STR for better armor and weapon skills?

Start with a hybrid from character creation? They all seem bad-ish in my experience.
>>
>>168610380
Depends on the version. In recent versions, Strength is better. In older versions with "strength weighting", Dexterity was better.

A fighter should always emphasize Strength. It decreases the encumbrance from heavy armor (which helps with accuracy), it increases damage, and it even decreases the loss of EV due to shield/armor (effectively being an EV boost, although less than via Dexterity).

Dexterity matters for auxiliary attacks and overall accuracy, along with the EV boost. It's definitely not meaningless, but it's a lot less important now for a melee fighter.

what's it?

also when have they implemented energy randomization?
>>
>>168612229
at its simplest it is using the angband knights-move line of sight asymmetry to have 2 chances at using teleport other on a same-speed monster, or one reliable chance on a faster monster. It still is very strong in PCB with its random energy, but it is basically 100% unbeatable in Vanilla, where there is no random energy and monsters cannot save against TO.

the LOS asymmetry thing is an ancient weird thing, not sure if it's rightly called a bug or what, but basically, imagine there's a bend in a corridor like so, with @ as the player and L as some lich:
>#L
>#
>@
The player can see and target the L but not vice versa (well, monsters with breaths or ball spells. It's very safe to use "one step back from the corner." and important to not do the reverse to yourself:
>##L
>@
where here the L can get you but you can't see/target him

>>168614820
is there a way to check if its an unrandart? I'm still new to roguelikes in general.

also holy shit this mace.
t.scroll of acquirement
i've never seen the inner flame rF++ combo before but it just feels ridiculously powerful

i meant that energy randomization had been inherited from hengband (afaik), los asymmetry is from angband itself

also dcss doesn't have it and (if nothing changed) as a result if you decrease your los all the monsters have their los equally decreased...

If it's an unrandart it'll have a unique description. the ring of becat is likely a randart, which means that it'll just be called something to the effect of "an ancient artifact."

For an example of an unrandart, examine your mace; that's the unrandart "Firestarter."

yeah, it's described as "an ancient artifact"
thanks anon

I have quite a few 3-rune wins, especially with MiMo^TSO. So I don't need another one. I'd want at least 6 runes to move up on my local highscore list.

Hybrids aren't really what you think they are. Training Spellcasting, Charms, Necromancy, Air etc. for those dank spells like Regeneration, DMSL, Passwall, PoG isn't hybriding. It's just abusing what's overpowered because a lot of those require far too little investment. Of course dumping "some" points on situationally useful Ranged weapons/Evocations/Invocations/Stealth aren't hybriding either.

These are what you call hybrids:

lvl 9 spellc
lvl 17 necro
lvl 6 charms
lvl 13 fighting
lvl 18 LB

lvl 16 spellc
lvl 20 earth
lvl 20 fire

lvl 13 fight
lvl 15 axes
lvl 17 xbow

lvl 13 fight
lvl 17 LB
lvl 20 SB
lvl 16 Bow
lvl 15 stealth

Oh so it's just a character with too much XP to be able to use several things at once?
I thought it was a build designed to be a melee/ranged tabber mixing in some mid-range spells.

>character with too much XP

Not necessarily. You could try doing my 3rd option with a HuHu and you'd surely have these by Lair:6
