I can't into art

If I'm making a 2D shmup, and use placeholder assets (sprites stolen from Gradius) in order to start coding and fleshing out mechanics, how hard would it be to transition to new sprites down the road?

Is there a better way to handle placeholder stuff? If I want to design an original boss fight, how would I go about that without any art assets?

You want to change the resampling method when scaling up - Photoshop and most image viewers have that option. In your case you'd want the Nearest Neighbor.

>work at the intended resolution and zoom in your canvas
What? No, I mean, when I'm working on it, that's fine. I can already zoom in. But the sprites I'm making are 32x32, so once I put them in the game, they're unbelievably small. So, I size'em up and then they're super blurry.

Making them bmps would fix that?

Im gonna be that guy, I would like to make a game. Itd be a hobby and nothing more but I want to take this seriously and will be dedicating about 9-12 hours a week to it. I dont know what specific kind of game I would like to make but I assume Ill have to make a series of 2d/3d simple concept single level type things until I get the hang of how to properly approach deving.

Is Unity right for me? If it is should I learn C# first or do it as I go?

Any generally well regarded tutorials or youtube vids for this sort of thing?

Im artistically challenged but I guess that wont matter until way further down the line. For the purposes of learning I imagine simple colors and shapes would be enough and on the 3d side free models should allow me to understand the actual game making?

Outsider here, is there any reason as to why Clickteam Fusion 2.5 is not a part of the recommended engines list?

The software seems to have potential to create some great games, though I could only point out to Freedom Planet (game on pic) for a concrete example. Played the game and loved it through and through.

Is it because there is no option to make actual raw scripts, code or such in contrast with the ones that are already there? That may be the answer but I'd like to make sure.
>>
>>167813852

Yeah, I see what you mean. I had the dress moving like this, but changed it to a simple stretch because I wasn't happy with how it looks here.
>>
>>167813852
, the dress bobbing up and down doesn't match the way the legs move, the animation should imply the cloth moving with the legs
>>
>>167813602
>>167814337

I'd recommend stiffing the animation on those wings, they look like they are flapping as the character is walking around. Wings should probably not move much when they are not in use/when walking on the ground.
>>
>>167814337
Hair bob is too slight, especially because it's colliding with the wing thing.

----[ Recap Complete ]----
First recap with score data in the image. I'm quite liking the idea, so unless there is a lot of opposition, I will be removing the scores section. As always, you can still visit the scores archive for a detailed list of all past and current game scores. Also I didn't manually correct any title misspellings this week, so some of you probably have incorrect score data shown. I'm writing a script to sort out those errors as I see them so it'll be fixed by next recap.

Earth doesn't rotate, that's why we don't feel any motion. Research "Airy's Failure." He had light come down the barrel of a telescope that was pointed at a star, then filled it water and noticed that the image of the star he was looking at didn't disappear. Which means the earth isn't moving in reference to the stars and the stars -are- moving in reference to the earth.

I don't like boss fights where I feel like I'm being cheated. I like the final boss in Jade Empire because its hard unless you cheese it and its a straight up 1v1 with the big bad. It doesn't pull any stupid punches, it doesn't give you some super weapon or unique mechanic that you HAVE to use in order to beat the fight, its just a really hard 1v1 fight.

If you take the Darth Malak fight I hated that he had is stupid health absorbing bullshit. Its like if I'm playing an RPG and its a starwars game where you're playing a jedi, as cliche as it is you want your fucking 1v1 dude.

It all depends on the game though. In metal gear solid I don't expect a 1v1 climactic brawl because for all purposes snake is just a guy, he isn't a Hero, using the term in a way that makes sense for classifying characters. When you're a guy vs a giant mechanical wolf mech sniper I don't expect you to 1v1 it in a traditional sense.

Also I don't like boss fights where the bad guy transforms and gains new powers randomly, though it bothers me less in JRPG's because thats just a thing that happens. If I'm playing like Bioshock I kind of hated that the game even had a final boss, like it didn't even need a final boss, it could have been better if you just found the guy and bashed his skull in with a wrench.

ComfyKids little progress update: working on inventory menu.

How it works:

Push button to bring up the pause screen, up down go between menu things. pushing right will move you into the items section, where you can interact with your loot. going further right puts you into the equipment section where you can put on/swap/remove gear from those slots.

Anything worn in the equipment section does not contribute to your storage limits, but if you have no room to take an item off and don't have space to swap for it you'll have to make room before you can do that.

Above the item boxes are a backpack and two pouches. You start the game with none of these, and a max carrying capacity of 4. You find the backpack in the first like two or three minutes of the game and it brings your item capacity up to 12 (16 if you count worn items)

Crafting pouches expands your inventory by +4 slots, and you can craft two pouches (it will reject you crafting more than two)

Player picture up in the top left will change according to how much LIFE you have left, current status effects are displayed below it, and the text box area at the bottom pops up when interacting with an item.

Crafting menu will just prompt you to tag two items, and it will prompt if you want to add a third. once you've done that, itll ask you what you want to do with them (COMBINE, COOK, CARVE, etc) based on things like "are you facing a fire or a cooking area?" or "what tools do you have (knife, axe, etc)"

This part might take a bit of time but it's a hella lot of fun to work on it.

Anon even AAA games use canvas-style solutions for game UIs. If you move the camera around in games from the early 2000s when you're in a menu you'd see that it's just a 2d object floating in 3d space right in front of the camera.

Paste code.

I suspect a reference problem.
Things like

>gameObject.transform.position.x = something;

don't work, you need to first do something like

>Vector3 newPos = >gameObject.transform.position;
>newPos.x = something
>gameObject.transform.position = newPos;

I solved the issue by attaching the sprite to an invisible cylinder, and then it worked perfectly instantly. I didn't change anything else, so I guess you can't move a sprite directly in 3D Unity? Or something?

Yeah I saw the rest of the conversation after replying, sorry about that.
You definitely should be able to move a sprite though, so there has to be something in your code causing it
>>
>>167834168
Thanks! It was way more difficult than I thought it'd be, but I guess that makes sense, seeing that I've never done any programming or coding stuff before, except for the first week of an HTML class like four years ago.

Anyway, point being, I never thought I'd be so happy to see a completely static character glide across a flat plane.

>>167834264
Well I really appreciate you replying regardless. I'm doing my best with my very limited skillset. Everyone's telling me to go read a C# book or watch tutorials, and I am, but I also don't want to wait a million years to start work on a game, y'know? I suppose that's impatient of me, but you learn by doing, right?

I really wish I could find what the problem was so I won't have to make an invisible block for every single character. Because it said in my inspector that I was moving whenever I hit the buttons, but the sprite never moved. And I've compiled and debugged and all that, and there aren't any errors. Super weird. Wish I weren't such a beginner.

Comfy sailing dev here, I have a question about what control system you like better.
For now, I have this:
>A and D to rotate the camera
>Z and X to steer the ship
>C to fold/unfold the sails
>F to use the mechanical arm
>G to talk to NPCs
>P to open the map
Is this fine? Should I change something? Also, should I add on-screen icons for the various buttons (ala Zelda)?

words are just ink on a page, but when you put a bunch of them in a certain order and on the right piece of paper you get people, places, stories.

Which mostly consist of fiction. If I draw stick figure and write next to it "tina 10v naked", how does it hurt anyone? If I draw stick figure shooting other stick figure, does it hurt someone? If I shoot someone in game, am I a killer? Should I get life sentence for that?

He is sorta right and not.

He is right, because if they would really be just a bunch of pixels, then no one would care. You play a certain game because the constellation of pixels represents something which has a greater meaning than a bundle of pixels. Don't tell me you wold only play it for getting the best scores.

And he's not right because it's just fantasize. Japs made it pretty straight forward: sexual assault in a hentai is ok, since it's against someone who is not a real person. And also: even if you play a shooter game, you don't play because you enjoy the act of taking a life or would like to experience how it is in a virtual environment.

But, once again, the setting does matter. You wouldn't play CS or COD or whatever if all the models and the setting would be replaced with magical unicorns in Rainbow Land even if everything else stays the same.

Best thing about fiction (when it's not meant to insult someone, like telling lies about someone) is that no one gets hurt. It's not real.

>Japs made it pretty straight forward: sexual assault in a hentai is ok, since it's against someone who is not a real person.
This is why loli should be and is legal in many countries. I find it better that pedophiles masturbates to drawn, fictional characters instead of molesting real children. Now this is just my opinion, but I think having loli legal is best approach for this. I'm not saying it should be acceptable or morally right to have this kind of content, but it's far superior option to let's say having people going around molesting children or some other sick shit.

Also these people who satisfies their desires via fiction are far better to have in society, since they will pay taxes instead of consuming tax moneys in prison. Also trying to catch these kind of people is kinda stupid for police, because they do have better things to do than trying to catch pedophiles who haven't harmed anyone. This also costs money.

Letting loli be legal is win-win situation for everyone.

You're looking at pixels on the screen right now.

The particular collection of pixels you were looking at a few minutes ago caused you to react strongly enough to send a reply, which means those pixels can exert real control over your behavior.

I'm trying to think of a nice little project to devote my time and practice on before moving onto bigger stuff. I think I may have something but I'm unsure if it's too ambitious.

How difficult are 3D realtime physics simulations of soft, jiggly stuff to do in unity? I pretty much just need a slimeball. It seems like it'd take a bit of work but it also seems like something that may be deceptively easy in-engine?

I don't really want to be told how to do it, I'd just like to know if it's out of scope for somebody with a lot of time but not much experience.

So, management sims... how the fuck do they even work in terms of development? Let's say we're talking about some game where you manage a company or a sports team. What would that have to do with it being a good engine or not? If a developer only uses default shaders and lighting and skyboxes then of course the game will look the same as 1,000,000 other shitty Unity games. That doesn't mean the engine is bad.

I can just assume most 3D games are now made in Unity and I will be right 90% of the time because it's the most popular engine, no need to even speculate based on how it looks. If it's 3D it is most likely Unity.

Managed to fully incorporate the loot list - now multiple containers can be handled seamlessly with the loot window purged and refilled every time the user opens or closes it, complete with support for chests with changed content ( If they are looted or if you put something in them it wont purge those items or respawn items already looted )

I was actually thinking of a game where you're a politician making the decisions in a city where people start disappearing, then it comes to light they're being killed by monsters, and then larger monsters start attacking until finally a Godzilla-tier kaiju comes stomping around.

Your goal is to keep panic as low as possible, reduce loss of life, etc., and you have to decide how much money to spend on media campaigns, whether to bribe witnesses and lie to people to keep them from panicking (at the cost of potential harm to your reputation and the population not being fully prepared), how much to spend on weaponsry, and so on.

The gameplay would be entirely done via menus and butons, and you choose who to hire and fire which affects what advice you get, what information is available to you, and so on. You click a button to progress time by a day and see what (if anything) of note has happened.

>Reduce resources available so that excessive pops die off from starvation.
Yea, that indeed has prevented the spawning of planet spanning ecumenopolises of 300 billion inhabitants. Now, 40 billion ecumenopolises are the largest. I will still need to take measures to constrain those, but it will do for now.

-----------------------
Progress:
>[+] Too many pops on the same planet will result in negative growth for pops.

>[+] There are polities now and there is a (more) proper creation procedure for them.
Polities don't have gameplay yet, but there is some simulacra going on for them. Those polities are not making "active" decisions to colonize the stars like it can be seen in WebM. It is just a result of pops migrating to less growded stars - when a pop steps on an uncolonized planet, its governing polity gets dibs on the entire star system.

>[-] Lack of concise information sources about stuff one certainly might want to know on the map.
For example, it is quite hard to gauge the "quality" of stars. There are several reasons for that. Firstly, stars themselves don't have any inherent attributes that modify the quality of habitation - everything is determined on planet-by-planet basis. But the map only displays stars. Secondly, "quality" can only be looked from the perspective of pop species. Different species might find radically different planets "good places to live". Thus, having a mapmode "quality map" alone is quite not enough - such a mapmode should be coupled with having to select a specie from whose perspective the quality is determined.

---------------
Pic is a short timelapse of ingame footage. I had to resize, speed up and suffer significant quality loss to fit it into 3MB limit.

There's also the confirmation bias of people recognising the engine of a game, but then any game which manages to break the style obviously gets ignored because they don't recognise the engine.

Like how people think every UE3 game is grimdark while ignoring the likes of Mirror's Edge and all the anime games.

The development of management sims is not that different from making a platformer.

Biggest difference is that one actually has to flex those ideaguy muscles and come up with a concise idea. Platformers are easy mode, since one does not have to come up with anything new - anything and everything has already been done and there are probably a few tutorials about whatever.

To make a management sim, you will have to come up with an idea. But that idea will be largely worthless. You then have to abstract that idea into terms that you could program. This will require some extensive idea guying. Once you have skeleton of an idea thought out, you can start making it. In most cases, it is not really worth it to develop it past the skeleton on the paper, since it is very hard to account for obstacles one might face.

Or in other words. Making a management sim is like dabbling in exotic magic - you have no idea what you are doing and you are essentially the pioneer of this magic amongst your peers.

I feel like I'm looking at it completely wrong, which is part of why I posted here, but like

it feels really hard to deal with the main character, the player's guy.
if they're a blank gordon freeman type there's nothing for the other characters to latch on to, and since it's a story game you can't do the half-life "ha ha he doesn't talk much let's basically ignore him in cutscenes" thing.
if it's a detailed, fleshed-out character, they're going to behave in certain ways because that's their character, so you have to really constrain what counts as a "choice."

it's like DMing a tabletop game where you're also the only player. you're coming up with situations for the characters to deal with, but you have a List of Acceptable Solutions and there's no way to deviate.

maybe that's what's fucking with me - the dream is having player and DM react to each other's ideas and mould the story to each other, and that's not really attainable in a static storygame

bring in traits and allegiances

character would get traits for certain choices in life. if the character chose to attend a mage college, that character would unlock an additional "better" choice than regular options, which is inspired from some chronicle in the mage college. Or if the character has a background of fighting, he then gets a perk "Fighter" which opens up options where the character can solves certain situations by getting violent.

Allegiances would be kinda like opinions one might want to juggle. Character might want to please different factions, but the choices in certain situations would raise opinion of one faction and lower the opinion of another. For example, the character can choose between turning a friend in to authorities to get a favor from the authorities or choose to hide one's friend from the authorities, not getting the favor from authorities for a quest. Or if the character has the "Wroth" trait, player character would be locked out of all other options and get only one Wroth option where the character yells at the constable from the top of his lungs "GET OFF MY FOOKING LAWN, YOU CUNTS!".

I think Atlantica Online handled this pretty well. The way positioning inside your team's grid, activations and activation points, stun counters and awakens, targeting and areas of effects, magic charges and combo spells worked made the game kind of fun. Only it got really grindy because hey asian mmo and that sucked the life out of it real quick.

>>
>>167858893
You control a team of up to nine characters. Teams take turns in which they can use up to five characters per turn, depending on activation points. Five highest current ap characters get an activation. Activations can be passed to other characters, as long as they have sufficient ap remaining, even if they've already moved that turn.

Getting hit by a physical attack for three turns in a row stuns a character, making them unable to gain ap or use activations and increasing damage taken. Different weapons have different attacks patterns - for example, axes hit up to three targets in the same row, spears hit an additional target behind their main one, rifles target an entire column. Combined with the stun system this makes the choice between high-damage single target weapons and low-damage multi-target weapons an interesting choice.

Magic relies on charges in addition to the usual mana points. Each character generates a charge each turn and can store up to four. Spells take one to four charges, and have variable ap costs as well. With enough activations, a witch character is capable of firing off multiple mana drain spells in a single turn, but her big meteor spell requires full charges and drops her ap so far in the negatives it's unlikely she'll get a single turn for the rest of the combat.

When not in combat you're looking at a shittily coded overworld screen that looks like it's straight from an early 00's chinese mmo where you get to look for the next group of monsters to engage.
>>
>>167859297
The style you use is very "conversational". While you do not use a uniform length for sentences overall, there are passages that are just POINT after POINT after POINT, very staccato in their nature. One example is paragraph 2 about the Megalith.
I feel that section 1 could benefit from a more list-like structure, or sub-captions. "Transports:", "Experimentals:" and so on. Not entirely sure though.

Section 3 makes your point very evident; it indeed feels disjointed, mostly due to the shortness of the points. Line 33 breaks away thematically from lines 29, 31, 35, 37, which all have to do with the interface layout overall, but the range indicators do not belong in there. The same goes for section 3 itself, as the surrounding sections talk about the game systems and the game's substance, but the interface is something more "meta".

I hope this helps.

I think your color scheme is a mistake. I've been overlooking your progress and yet noticing it at the same time because you post often enough. I overlook it because it looks like metroidvania #2340923438

So you're saying it's sjw-filled garbage, because 2/9 or 2/12 fighters are female?

If I can suspend my disbelief to allow "shouting heals you" and "standing here for a second will increase your damage for the next 30 seconds", "bladed weapon wielded by someone that is not a Rob Liefield hunk deals actual damage to Rob Liefield hunks" is not far off.

completely unrelated, there is no reason to fill the game with females except to get sjw brownie points
>>
>>167865296
Do you think female combatants in Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat are sjw pandering, too? What about female tauren or gnomes in WoW?
Believe it or not, there are people on this planet that do not have a masculinity so fragile that it breaks whenever they don't play as Terry Crews on steroids.

How do I transition into an RPG menu from the main game using Unity? I've found guides on the flow of turns, but I don't think I made the best choices, given how IEnumerator costs an arm and a leg to fire a function.

Rule No 1:
Do not use colors that burn the player's retina.

Background colors in the front usually have a lower value in order to create contrast between important and unimportant elements. This implies that the player, enemies etc. use higher value colors.

>>
>>167868132
Doing dark backgrounds/light foregrounds is generally how it works, but in art, you want the lightest lights in the foreground, and ALSO the darkest darks. Contrast is the key.

One of the two games was supposed to be an RPG where the male MC is surrounded by female party members and there was an affection meter that unlocked special combo attacks. I could just make it yuri, but it's not the same

I'm just saying that separate textures make it easy to swap or change the color of, say, the hair without requiring some fancy mask thing (which would require a single additional texture anyway)
>>
>>167879830
Aah, yeah that makes sense.
Still, that is one costly character in terms of VRAM.

I'm still aiming for the 3DS, which has like 6MB (4MB for the old 3DS?).

Is your game "Juicy"?
Can you make "Plays"?

That seems to be the most deciding factors to sucessfull indie games I have been noticing.
