Doing my first HQ assault, and I'm wondering how you fight a nasty pod when you can't move forward due to the enemy density?

I've got a sapper grenadier who's just shit and one rocket. So cover destruction isn't much of an option.

I've been loving flashbangs (I might actually ditch the boomer grenadiers for support ones) and area suppression for control, but delaying seems like an awful idea because at least one of the 3 pods my shinobi sees will probably patrol into me.

You need gunners with demolitions and hail of bullets to smack people out of or in cover, combined with snipers and rangers to rain down the damage consistently. Grenadiers take off once you hit plasma nades, but besides the very early game can be kind of underwhelming. Everyone else can help a bit with volume of fire on exposed targets, or chipping away at targets in cover with grazing shots.

map is pretty huge. I scouted and secured the first two buildings without breaking concealment, then pulled pods across that big airport area and made no man's land with gunner demolition and value rockets. My guys just sat in the windows and doors taking potshots and overwatch, sniper and shinobi kept reeling them in.

Eventually you do have to push across the airport to the main building for the boss pod, it's not so bad if you clear every other one first and give it the old surround and pound.

It seems like the biggest deal it knocking down your first HQ. YOU NEED all those supplies and corpses to keep your research going while pumping out armor, weapons, and foundry projects.
I'm convinced the HQ assault is the chip, a key if you will. Without a liberated region you will eventually fall behind the arms and race be be beaten down by attrition.

This is speculation after my current campaign is going down the tubes. I though that I could put all the rebels in the region into hiding and stop doing mission to lower the ADVENT strength, but no lol, fuck you. So I waited for two months, got nothing for it, and now I'm down 5 men after a horrible AVENGER defense. If I pick it back up, I'll be launching an immediate assault on the HQ as my final gambit to save the campaign. I've been doing the same as you, passing up research and foundry projects and not able to pump out weapons because I don't have the supplies, and it finally bit me in the ass.

Honestly, even with Red Fog set to Ayy's Only they have tons of ways to fuck your shit by mid-game. Just you wait till those Dark Events starts piling up. Also, LW2 Red Fog does not seem to affect Viper poison spit range or enemy grenade throwing range, so a single viper spit can cost you either the mission or a couple of soldiers with full Red Fog on.

Assuming vanilla, ADVENT never upgrades. Instead, their standard troopers get replaced by advanced variants over time. This happens independent of your tech levels.

you can take those troop column ambush missions in that region, they'll reduce advent strength while also reducing vigilance in that region. as far as i can tell from looking through the ini all you can really do is reduce their vigilance in that region and increase it in others. "getting advents attention" gives something like three times the vigilance increase of other missions if you're looking to re-position legions

Depends on the mod, also depends on what kind of save it is. For example, on that mod i'd assume that if you are in a mission, then install the mod, and then load up a save that was mid mission, it probably wont change anything until you are on the next mission.

I've liberated my first region, working on two more, and just contacted another continent and the Avatar bar showed up. Its also fucked, I started in Western America, and the Blacksite is in Russia, so I have to go through 3 additional countries to get to it.

If I liberate a country, do i need to leave my haven on intel? or can it be turned to supplies? Or do the more havens you have on intel duty, the better missions you get everywhere?

Goddamn the geoscape is so unintuitive now.

Its not like LW where you slowly crawled your way through the mud, consolidating power in your home continent while liberating conquered nations and you could pretty much tell how you were doing.

Flamethrower Technicals are alright, but you need a bit of luck to get a proper one set up. First, you'll want a rookie with good HP and mobility. Preferably not someone with -10 defense either, since they're gonna get shot at frequently. Second, you'll want to edit the config that lets you immediately see ALL your soldiers AWC skills, since there is a chance they could get granted stuff like Run and Gun or other hugely beneficial perks. You might also want to consider running them with either a suppression Gunner or Close Combat Specialist Assault, since Roust can force free shots.

Dunno if you went forward with your mission, but I'd recommend either using your SMG guy's suppressor, using an intel boost, or not going at all.

As I understand it, enemy readiness works on thresholds, so 98% is the same as 80% (I don't know the exact cutoffs).

So being almost to 100% won't cut it unless you're fully prepared for a sub100 mission.

I'm of the opinion there wasn't a tactical way to finish that mission by the time I got there. Everyone was wounded from suicide bombers so the sectopod only need to get one hit off. You would've just had to do some abuse or got insanely, less-than-one-percent lucky.

Maybe if I'd known the specifics of the mission beforehand I could've done something, sure, but since I didn't it wasn't a fair mission.

Well I'm in an interesting situation

I sent off the entirety of the A and B team to finally hit the advent HQ. I was hoping that during the 12 boosted goddamn days it would take to reach the bare 100% minimum I would get solo-able missions but now I came across a new one.

It's something involving protecting a datatap, and the reward is Unhindered Operations. It's a 6 man no infiltration time mission that expires within a day. Problem is that anyone who can shoot straight is off to that HQ and I'm really not up to sending a majority spec squad there. Just how important is this datatap mission? Because I'm mulling setting off the raid for it

Every mission ends with corpses and one or two survivors limping away from the Skyranger, whispering to each other about why they even bother following this Commander's advice. I still insist on making custom characters for every soldier going into battle, and every death hurts a little more. Seeing the customization options, creating a Big Boss soldier became a no-brainer. Since certain cosmetic items are unlocked later in a soldier's upgrade path, I started the way Big Boss should start: two eyes, no cigar, and slightly optimistic about the world. It was perfect. This sharpshooter would work his way through the promotions and I could turn young John from Metal Gear Solid 3 into Big Boss by eventually adding an eyepatch and cigar, then I could add scars to his face, change his clothes, and turn him into Venom Snake by the time I was wrapping up XCOM 2's campaign. I was very excited. I brought ol' Naked Snake into the woods on the next mission, he missed a couple of shots and then a Muton disemboweled him. Advent at strength 8 fields their advanced troopers and MECs, and plenty of aliens from the first war.The longer a haven attack goes on, the more pods reinforce with each wave, and I dropped extraction 1 turn late not knowing it would take 3 turns to arrive.

Cut off units were sprinting with advent in hot pursuit from the forest across the road, while everything at the LZ devolved into a no-cover clusterfuck with 10 enemies on us the turn before firebrand arrived. Rookie flashbangs saved the mission MVP from getting wasted by 3 flank shots, and people were ducking unclearable overwatches to get in to the extraction. For the first 5 turns I thought this was going to be a steamroll but we pulled the victory straight out of our underserving ass at the end.

I'd imagine that we have sorta super steroid tasers. You shoot a tiny electromagnet, or a set of them, and have plasma zap out from your gun to these magnets - which would allow you to do some REALLY fucking neat shit, like shooting around corners, setting up plasma floor traps, using wounded enemies themselves as booby traps, etc.

Okay boys how did you beat the Tower Infiltration mission? I managed to get to the control panel, only to find out that I had to kill the rest of the enemies. No big deal, there's only like 2 sectoids a viper and an advanced solider. 4 turns later, facing down 30 enemies, no rockets or grenades left.

Is there an established overall strategy that improves my odds of success? I feel like I fall behind on weapons and armor, still using kevlar and basic lasers by the time ADVENT hits strength 5 in my home region, with 3 regions contacted overall. RIP Hui Ying Li, a squaddie haven advisor who died leading resistance agents on a severely undermanned Lib 3 mission. He and his redshirts took out an ADVENT drop with their grenades, and he fired off his rocket and flamethrower at another trooper pod while leading them down the street toward the rendezvous for evac. Then the aliens chasing the XCOM operatives and VIP found the tasty treats crossing the street, and a Naja killed him instantly, he never saw it coming and felt no pain. The sectoids raised him as a psi zombie and his twisted face was the last thing the Lt. saw before she roped out of the AO, we couldn't get him back. Two of his agents also died to the aliens, but he never knew that. The mission was completed and we now have the coordinates of New Australia's network tower.
