I'm also up, and playing ETW for the first time in yonks. It's held up pretty well, but fuck damn I'd forgotten how bad line inf is in early game. They can't hit dick and my cav and pikemen are doing all the work.

That's what your cavalry is for. If you're at the point where your ranged units are flanking, then it means their archers and cavalry are all that remain, allowing you to send your own cavalry and archers around.

Generally those kinds of units are either anti-armor or have high damage. So you want them to hit targets that will do damage to your line or just support your line.

If you having them engaging other missiles they'd naturally do worse due to the need for clear sight lines so it's best to engage enemy missile units with something else.

They're a bit gimmicky to use right so it's best to keep their numbers down to 1-2 units. (I'm assuming this is Warhammer you're talking about, if not then some of this does change.)

Doesn't have to be melee cavalry. Sounds like it's a gunpowder army, so you can throw in an outrider or pistolier. They work well against enemy ranged units (that aren't elves/dwarfs, of course). You don't have to engage them in melee either, just moving in their general direction is enough to force them to run.

In Warhammer they will still be able to shoot at large units.

Also units with arcing shot rarely ever have armor piercing, so if you want AP skirmishers you're just gonna have to deal.

Also if you can get them on slightly raised ground they can fire down in front of the lines.

Yeup, just helped my 13 Colonies after getting buttfucked by the Iroquois. I had considerable problems with fucking bowmen and standard melee inf, let alone medicine men.
Good fun though, getting into all sorts of shit. Mughals exterminated the Marathas and Mysore and kicked out France and Portugal, rebels took Ceylon and I'm waging a guerrilla war with one army running around the south of India gaining mad xp.
13 Colonies lost half their settlements to natives and now we're taking them back with France's help.

Sweden has gone full genocide mode and is conquering the fuck out of Europe while I sit off to one side and rake in mad trade node dosh.

empires sheer scale makes it fun and unpredictable, its a shame CA never bothered to fix it, because it has incredible potential, and some neat features. Like in one of my campaigns as the United Provinces I had just finished conquering India and Persia, when a massive war against the Polish-Swedish alliance broke out, since Russia was allied with them and was moving armies to my borders I pre-emptively declared a war on them and invaded Russia through Caucasus with an army of veterans from India, while using my massive navy to attack the French and Spanish who also declared a war on me

Both are very good, the units that they bring really change the factions.

Morris engine is a key part in a VC army, and strigoi is fantastic.

Empire get a nice low tier unit in the free company, knight blazing Sun are very cool and great answer to wood elf tree units flaggelents are good against terror builds.

If you can get both at some point I recommend it, the gobbo units have absolutely changed GS for me.

Having played r1, m2 and R2, I'm kind of not getting how charging works. On the first charge of a cavalry unit, it's powerful enough to send infantry flying and shatter formation but when I move them alway and charge the 2nd time they hit like wet noodles. Great to see Bretonnia getting an update that they never got during the tabletop. This game really Warhammer Fantasy 9th edition.

I'm hoping for a Dishonored or Banished Knights who fight on foot (on the ground with peasants) and are mainly used for sieges. To make sure Bretonnia does not lose the cavalierly focus, these Banished Knights are limited to three units per army as no Bretonnia Lord or Paladin would tarnish his reputation with such Knights.

Ah yes this post again, not really. The good ol' Chaos Knights/Blood Knights/Grail Knights Debate is as old as dirt. And no Grail Knights are no better than either in crunch or fluff since they are all superhumans.

Granted the Grails probably would have gotten a +1T in this list but no Grails aren't the best never were, never will.

However of the triumvirate, Bloods clearly got the best deal (not even close) with Grail Knights seeing some use and Chaos Knights completely not performing to cost (depressing). Growth first, then get walls asap, then put economy buildings in. Capture what you can defend without walls (until they're built up of course). Get the walls up, and capture some more. If you're attacking in the middle of a war in enemy territory, just loot unwalled towns and then raze them next turn. If it's walled just raze it. Makes it so that the enemy can't use the settlement without great cost. You can just go and rebuild it once the fighting stops in that area.

It's much worse than that, half of your provinces will randomly turn against you. Truth be told, civil wars aren't that hard to deal with, they're just annoying and will set you back a couple dozen turns depending on where your armies are.

Empire is not a heavy armored infantry faction, it became one with unlimited greatswords which in early patches were broken. When Empire can out infantry slough chaos you fucked up royally.

When you bring less orcs than dwarfs because of unlimited black orcs, kinda against the theme

When 75% of the beastmen army cost is Morghur and 3 gorebulls, kind of anti-thematic for a horde swarm faction akin to greenskins

Vampire counts, same story with GG which also needed nerfed.

Without limits every faction is a down the pipe chaos warriors knock off, hence battles are so one dimensional and boring. Even Wood Elves play the deathstar, down the pipe strategy.

What are the benefits of special/rare shit everwhere? Make an army of minos/tanks/whatever to auto-win?

Am i playing the warhammer wrong, i always over extend right at the start and take every province i can and end up taking most of the map by turn 80 having only basic units.

I never get good units, and it ends up being a next turn fest waiting for money so i can upgrade provinces for Chaos to come.

Just started an Empire campaign in TWW for the first time.
What the fuck am I supposed to do about the Wood Elves declaring war on me 30 turns in and sending two doomstacks to wipe all of the cities in the providence I just got stable?
I've read that cavalry is the counter for them but there's no way I can have anything other than shitty pistoleers at this early in the game. I'm about to abandon that game because I don't really know how I'm supposed to recover since I just started making money after beating the secessionists before these cocksuckers beelined for me without provocation.

There are problems with the mod too, because apparently they never declare war on you but still attack other Empire Provinces, making confederation a bit easier I suppose. But it's still better, unless you're willing to wait for CA to balance (which will probably happen with Brettonia DLC)

You'll be fine. It will take a while to get the hang of a few things like Sanitation, food, climate change and whatnot but you'll learn fast.

Your best bet is to pick a secluded faction. I'm not sure if you picked up any DLCs but any British tribe, Garamantians, Vikings are all relatively simple and slow paced enough to teach you the mechanics when you need to learn them, instead of dumping you into an already built empire (Sassanids/Rome) where you have to figure out everything immediately.

Attila is one of the tougher Total Wars because it has a load of mechanics that its preceding and succeeding titles don't have, but it has the most fun battles (imo) of all the games.

Also, don't fall for the stonemason meme.

I donì't really get the point you're trying to make m8, but in a map like that the obvious chokepoint would be the only spot seeing some action 90% of the time, so the argument that you'd like to have the whole city is pretty pointless as you'd literally get all you want with just a few more meters of map ground.

I personally always found the idea of giant cities in siege maps pretty silly to be honest, since even with 2 full stacks on either side you couldn't surround it effectively or fight at every corner anyway. When you end up using half of the map at most, is it really that bad to have smaller maps in another game?

Blood for the blood god is relatively cheap and adds gore to the battles. The battles look pretty damn silly without this dlc.
Grim and the grave adds new Lords and units for Empire and Vampire Counts. Kind of meh but i personally bought it since i knew i would play Empire and VC first.
Warriors of chaos is considered to be the worst dlc since their campaign is so fucking tedious and boring
Realm of Wood Elves and Beastmen are the most priciest simply because they each add a mini campaign to the base game. The mini campaigns are sort of boring but the factions themselves are nice. Beastmen are basically a more fun version of Chaos and Wood Elves are an archery focused "quality over quantity" faction that has some unique events and reseources.
King and the Warlord is in my opinion the best dlc out right now. It adds some smelly dwarf called Beggar Nohammer no one likes + the Surpeme ruler of Eight Peaks that's at least in my opinion the most fun and unique campaign out there right now.

So you probably have Brets and Welves going on a beastmen hunt together and celebrating afterwards. Though they probably don't come into Athel Loren.
But on the flip side you'll get a greedy bretonnian lord who smells that sweet sweet lumber export, and gets dryad'd.

There will be 3 games. The last is supposed to combine all 3 into a giant map. So its kinda a half expansion half game. From what I remember when they announced the map editor it was possible to see something to do with skaven.
So since High/Dark Elves are the next most popular factions and that little leak it makes sense to put the next game in the new world. High Elves vs Dark Elves and Lizardmen vs Skaven will be the major conflicts. They might do Daemons of Chaos as a DLC or something. Since they already have most of the roster done, you might also see some Orks led by Grom and some Empire factions. While I don't think it's an unforgivable sin, it's one of those things that should've been readily apparent with even the most rudimentary QA prior to release.

Seemingly, the only thing CA considers a lower priority than QA is faction balance, and it gets annoying after a while. I'm concerned that with cranking out the next however many factions they won't have so much as a single guy assigned to making sure they all play together well. The final complete campaign is going to be a near unplayable clusterfuck unless they start planning ahead for campaign faction interactions.

Steam reviews are garbage. Nothing but people complaining about DLC, pricing, shit like that. Barely any actual complaints towards the game itself.

That being said, it's very simple compared to other TW games. Minimal settlement management, almost no politics, research is mostly pointless. The battles are fun, the faction variety is great and the new mechanics like Magic while being underwhelming are very fun to play with.

In order of simplicity, I would say it goes

Warhammer -> Shogun 2 -> Rome 2 -> Shogun 2: FOTS -> Attila.

The best deciding factor, imo, is if you like that setting.

Must you use all caps? And I'd say cyrenaica is a great place to settle as its a 4region province which has several ports and protected by desert. Also its usually still ROman Pagan so you can get the sweet sanitation bonus which really helps out barb factions.

Heroes can interact with armies and regions. They can assassinate, demoralize, blocks armies, etc. You need an agent to kill another one, unless you kill him on the battlefield

Some don't look THAT different, like the Devils of Schwartshafen are just a different color mostly since they don't have any equipment.

The ones in the Dwarf/Greenskin one generally have more effort put into them.
