Added some props to the world and fixed some stuff.
Had to remove ship wobble because it messed with the mechanical arm, though I could make the boat wobble only when moving I guess.
Added proper icons to the map UI (not shown here).

I've always been terrible at them. Usually I just hit attack a whole bunch, and if it's a game with specific weaknesses like Persona, I obviously exploit that with lightning/poision/whatever. Now, being dumb, my gaem has fallen into this exact trap. You can basically just spam attack to win, and I'm genuinely not sure how to make it more complex than that other than by adding in very obvious multi-turn attacks you need to block, or adding timing elements like Paper Mario.

Here's the code I use, simplified a bit. The "tileSize" variable is set in the inspector.

Look at the import settings of your tiles, and set the "pixels per unit" field to 100 (the default)> now divide your sprite size in pixels by 100. For a 32x32 sprite, this means "tileSize" should equal .32.

You could add this logic to the map class itself but I don't bother, since you only have to set this once.

Well the good news is that I had the courage to finally download GameMaker: Studio instead of just doodling and slapping piano. The bad news is that I've never coded before, and generally have no clue what I'm looking at or doing.

Any good tutorials on actually learning the interface and how to solve problems, instead of just giving me a formula to do the one specific task I need done at that specific time? Game Maker isn't really made for 3D. You can still use it for 3D, but it's not something I'd recommend to anyone who's not already really familiar with GM. If you really want to learn to make 3D games, you should go with Unity. Plus, learning C# will be a lot more useful down the line than learning GML.

yeah being a Unity user I'd naturally recommend it, but I might be biased.

if you're starting out even in the programming part and want to get to Unity, the official Unity tutorials on scripting sounds like a good place to start. It's very generous in teaching the fundamentals that aren't even Unity-specific, the basics of programming, which is a good foundation to have.

Honestly a lot of it is just going to come down to what you're more comfortable with, and it's worth playing around with both to see which you prefer.

I can't say if it's the best option (because I don't have experience in Gamemaker or Unreal to help me compare), but it certainly is something that can be done in Unity. You can even have GUI or 2d sprites being drawn on the surface of some box or surface in the 3d world, though that's a bit of an advanced technique.

yeah certainly possible, but what I meant was you could do transitions that way too, as in when you move close enough to a surface that has a puzzle in it, then press the button to activate, the camera animates towards the surface with the 2d sprites, and you'd play the puzzles there and then. it's probably more complicated than you want though.

No, that's not a dumb question. What I mean by that is that everything that happens in the game is done in 2D, but you draw everything to the screen in 3D. Think of Doom, or other similar games from that era. Doing anything beyond that in 3D using Game Maker is going to be a really big hassle. It's definitely doable (for example, there's this one wizard who posts to agdg who's making a Megaman Legends clone in Game Maker), but you'll be shooting yourself in the foot by not going with something more geared towards 3D.

So I wanted to start with unity for my pixel 2d jump & run and after 5 min. I installed gamemaker again.

Well but I am on a new problem. I made 2 objects "player" and "obj.wall", made a code for the player so he recognizes that there is a wall and he won´t fly through. But all of them were in the object folder. If I make new groups/folders and put them there it won´t work anymore. any solutions?

So in UE4, how do I make the delay feature not depend on the processor's speed ?

What's probably happening is your framerate gets set really low when alt-tabbed, and that just happens to be the first frame the engine is able to stop the particle.
