Mmm...pie, edition

Dominions is a fantasy turn-based war game created by two dudes. One of them is a teacher.

The game combines a simple presentation with an extremely wide array of strategic options, including over 2800 units, 800 spells and 300 magic items. Turns are resolved simultaneously, with players planning battles rather than directly controlling them.

It has simplistic graphics but is easily moddable and extremely deep.

Basically, it's an autist’s wet dream of a war game.

Is there a lore or balance explanation for the extremely high MR of Empoisoners (17)? They're the highest MR assassin in the game that are recruitable. I understand they are cap only, but the next highest assassins 2 steps down at 15 MR, are Demonbred (cap-only, flying, cheaper), Star Children (S1 coastal recruits, generally superior assassins) and the Baobhan Sidhe (almost twice as expensive, and generally superior assassins/mages).
>>
>>167223592
Lizards have very high magic resistance in general. Their regular troops are 12 MR. And it's not uncommon for mages to have +5 MR more than non-mages of the same race.

For anyone who can't be bothered going to dom3mods and deciphering the mod, it gives them a cap-only unit version of the oni general. Not sure on the price, I believe it uses autocalc.

As for my opinions on the change, I dislike it. Yomi is quite unique in being one of the few nations without recruitable sacreds. I'd prefer a buff which preserves that variety, rather than giving every nation powerful cap-only sacreds.

Also, if I haven't missed something, I think you'll find that your oni ghosts will have 7 natural protection. Oni spirits typically have zero.

Yo guys. So I'm around 90 hours in and still as newb as ever.
Am I doing it wrong? I mean, am I supposed to be studying the manual and shit or is it ok if I just keep playing and see first hand what works and what doesn't?

>>
>>167237460
I of usings EA Ermor, I chose it because of its theme and even if it was the worst nation on earth I'd still pick it any day of the week.
I have to uh, research evocation and conj a lot?
For summer lions and big fireballs?
>>
>>167237665
Don't forget to go into thaumaturgy and enchantment. Thaum for communions and prison of fire, enchantment for skelespam. Your foreignrec mage priests are also quite nice.
>>
>>167237665

Some basic evocations fit your mage corps, not only fireballs but also falling fires. Do note that you have D mages and can use D evocations, mainly the excellent shadow blast. There is also bane fire a DF evocation that does serious damage if you need it to kill a big target.

You also want some conjuration research done for phoenix power (+1F in combat, always start with that to improve your mages) and fire elementals (conj5). Those are useful combat spells in conj.

As EA Ermor you also want thaum1 for the communions. A big communion can move your D2 mage to D5-6 and then he can shadow blast with huge range and aoe.

Also worth noting is ench5 for skeleton hordes - again either D2 mages or D mage communions. Also obviously construction 4 for some magic boosting items - skull staff comes to mind.

Once you have those we can discuss mid-late game.
>>

Maybe I'll take my turn, but I'm not sure if I will be able or will need 3 more days.

How do you wish for an Arena Battle? I'm trying it out in a test game and I've tried "Arena" "Deathmatch" "Arena Battle" "Deathmatch Arena" and many other similar variations. "Fame" gives you 5. Is it even possible?
>>
>>167237665
>Italian
>EA Ermor

Cute!

Stellar cascades is a incredible spell that can decimate armies. It might sound not so impressive for a newbie, since it makes no damage, though.

You will need Evocation 5 for it, and a S2 mage to cast it. The steps then would be:

>bring 10 S2 mages and one medium sized army (a stack of 30 principes will do)
>fight literally anything
>win
That's it.

Of course it's not unbeatable, but putting enemy's elite units to sleep works great really often if you can tank them for a while (it's not worth against either really big armies or flying units, for example).

If you want to get into communions, you can tell 4 of your mages to cast Communion slave and the remaining 6 to cast communion master. They will be able to cast stellar cascades for a lot more of turns than your 10 mages directly casting it.

Also try this "advanced" strategy:
>bring 10 mages
>7 of them cast master, 3 slaves
>One of the masters casts Power of the spheres
>then that one casts communion slave
With this setup now your 4 slaves are getting 20/2-> 10 -> 10/4-> 3 fatigue per turn per mage casting Stellar cascades. With 6 masters casting it, each slave will get 18 fatigue per turn.
This means they after 11 turns they will be at 198 fatigue, then on turn 12 of casting stellar cascades they will go up to 200 and start getting 1 damage per cast and die after some casts.
I didn't take into account the encumbrance of the mage or the cast of Power of the spheres because I'm lazy, but you get the idea of how communions can make your mages cast a lot more spells than they otherwise could (a S2 mage could only cast 5 stellar cascades before reaching 100 fatigue).
>>
>>167238580
I'm already spamming Stellar Cascades like there's no tomorrow, although I didn't know that using communions would better the process.
30 principes is a medium army? Huh.
I use 30 principes just to guard the mages from man-birds and whatever devilry comes up against me. Thank you very much!
>>
>>167238982
30 principes is enough to shank a fatigued out force to death, not enough to take on anything with a significant amount of mage support.
>>

Has Yomi 'corrected' quickly?
>>
>>167237665
For some dumb reason nobody has mentioned astral fires, which is literally the only reason to play EA ermor.
But yeah, you want to run fire evo communions at first, then you want to run astral fires communions. You don't even need to recruit augur elders till turn 20 (except for 1 or 2 for sitesearching)

>>
>>167246284
To add to my earlier point, 17/30 nations in EA don't actually have astral magic anyway.
>>
>>167245159
What? Lanka "corrected quickly" means that people quickly learned they were fine.

Yomi still has many detractors.
>>
>>167246284
>It's easily one of the best MR-negates spells in the game
Yeah, no.

>writing it off because of the existence of antimagic is like writing thunderstrike off because of the existence of the variety of different methods of getting shock resistance
Come back after finding a spell that grants you near total immunity to thunder strike at lvl3 research.

I love you too, anon.
>>
GODDAM FUCKING GIANTS GIVE ME THAT FORT ALREADY
>>
>>167246547
Right. So why does Yomi still have detractors, while people quickly learned that Lanka was fine?

Is it because the 2 nations interact with the turmoil power differently? Do you think the nations are equivalent enough that if TP is workable on one, it must be okay on the other? Or what?

Drop the socratism. What's your actual point?
>>
>>167244881
Expensive and fragile units on a nation which needs to take turmoil, mostly.

It's exaggerated, but it's still a thing.
>>
>>167246713
Lanka has blood and reanimation.

>>167246632
Antimagic isn't level three. If astral fires isn't one of the best MR-negate spells, then what is?

Even with antimagic up astral fires kills 3-4 human troops per cast
>>
>>167248743
Maybe Yomi actually differs from Lanka and you can't just say "well Lanka handles turmoil power fine, so obviously Yomi can too" without any reasoning.
>>
>>167249143
Do you have an argument or just speculation about maybes?
>>
>>167249268
Not particularly, which is why I was asking questions to begin with. I'm trying to see why you think the 2 nations are so seemingly similar to such an extent that if one handles TP, the other should be able to. I'm not trying to argue here.

Lanka does have blood (which is aided by turmoil to an extent), massive reanimation, really good summons off their blood + good sacreds to expand with, which helps any problems of turmoil power. What does Yomi have?
>>
>>167249753

A recruitable SC chassis and Tengu summons?
>>
>>167249930
>Dai Oni
>SC

I beg to differ. It's a decent Thug, but it lacks the ability to SC.
>>
>>167249753
I don't think they're particularly similar.

I do think that the general arguments on why turmoilpower is crippling are either true or untrue, and if people were willing to accept they were untrue for Lanka because it won lots of games, they shouldn't think that turmoilpower crippled Yomi, either, which won a very respectable number of games, too.
>>
>>167249962
You can begin to differ all you like, but Dai Oni fit into that category just fine.
>>
>>167249962

It has an excellent base statline, is multiform, can cast both Soul Vortex and Phoenix Pyre, self bless, and deploy various buffs as necessary. Geared up right they are, at LEAST, comparable to Melquarts.
>>
>>167250168
>>167250231
Fair point.
>>
>>167250231
There's a dumb meme here that things with less HP than golems can't be SCs, even though the only relevant issue is whether they can fuck up a magesupported army that doesn't have counters ready.
>>
>>167250383

I mean, I'm not gonna say they're best SC. They can't stand up to lategame summon chassis. But they're definitely fucking solid for a recruitable.
>>
>>167249962
They're the best recruitable SC for actually fucking up enemy armies in actual engagements thanks to their pathing.

Fomorian kings are only better because you have far more freedom to choose your engagements (thanks cloud trapeze).
>>
>>167250231

And gets one shotted by an anti demon weapon. Amazing SC.
>>
>>167252286
which is a specific counter
any SC dies to a specific counter
the fuck is your point
>>
>>167252286
That's true of Tarts too, and they're very much considered SCs (depending on their paths).

Just because it gets countered doesn't mean it's not an SC. An SC just means that it can beat an enemy army by itself. If it loses, then it was merely a thug.
>>
>>167252286
and I newb but I think this is how it goes

Thug: has high stats, and cannot be killed with normal troops, holds it's own against an indeterminate number of normal troops but will get killed by any caster with basic evo / conjuration

SC: The same as before, but it's also immune to most things and that let's it get to the enemy casters with ease

SCs are tailor made against specific armies and therefore so unless it's a pretender with lots hp or 25 MR it will still get one shot by a counter
>>
>>167253234
Thug: Commander with gear that hits things in melee
SC: Can kill an army. If it hits things, it's a supercombatant. If it casts things, it's a supercaster
>>
>>167253515
I can't imagine a way to make a supercaster beyond casting super spells that affect all units but surviving. the fatigue costs are too much to end up knocking yourself out after 6 or 7 spells
>>
>>167253695

Soul Drain.
>>
>>167253695

An S9 Oracle with both rings and a Crystal Coin can cast Master Enslave two turns in a row in Magic 3, for example, and that's 800 fatigue base.

Someone said Storm was good for Storm Demons. It'd certainly seem fitting given their storm power. But Storm fucks with missile attacks, something Storm Demons rely on. It also prevents their flying. Am I missing something here?

I think I've figured out his style, actually. It's not that he hides his own power, it's that he explains all this great stuff you can do conquer other people or help take down the big bad guy, with detailed information about what they're using and how to counter it, and then if you go ahead and implement it, then you'll do well in that war but he'll go conquer all the thrones and win.

no gunpowder, but there are mods for it, including a WW2 inspired one, featuring USA/Germany/USSR as Something-or-another/Ulmreich/Sovirus

a few mods have tried it or been suggested, but the problem is if you don't have a weapon/projectile sprite, the attacks will just auto-hit.
if you do have a weapon sprite, they all arc like arrows, so it looks silly.

What mythologies should be added to the game? What mythologies should be expanded? What has to much?

Need more east asian stuff imo. Maybe some SE Asia or Polynesia. There's not nearly enough iron age Europe stuff either. Marverni/Ermor/Arco/Therodos are pretty much it.

There's too much Norse. Why is Helheim even a thing? At least do Muspelheim or something so there's fire norse.

More specifically, is it worth going to alt 4 for Wind Guide to increase precision from 24 to 29?

Less about that and more about the fact that they don't do pantheons with lots of gods like we do.

Only ones who did something akin to that were west african / south nigerian fons, akans and yorubas, and their myths mix together a lot

Early east african myth is unknown because lol egypt, and old somalian ethiopian oral tradition was lost when they the abrahamics did their thing.

that's why Machaka exists really. Too little to have a solid pantheon so they had to lump different myths together to make a nation. Not even myths actually, they just grabbed what the """"""""""great""""""""" Greek historian Herodotus said about the east African sea trade kingdoms and called it a nation. It's why you don't even have a LA machaka because Herodotus' descriptions are matched with no existing evidence of those kingdoms (and the actual historical sea trading kingdoms of east Africa turned to Islam of which there's 0 dom4 nations based on it)

>>167265341
>Dahomey

there's enough blood in there to make mictlan look like a walk in the park. would play

>>167265431
Benin was a medieval kingdom known for being African China because they built a billion walls everywhere. They were also culturally pretty unique - very few traces of other cultures mixing with them. Unique pottery, etc, etc. In fact that part of west Africa is suspected to be one of the places where agriculture was developed independently.

In game they's be MA ulm with fortresses.

Actually, we could make a EA (Ghana) -> MA (Benin) -> LA (Dahomey) west african trilogy. enough material on them all to make a nation that is not like machaka.

In fact I think you could even make a splinter MA nation for the Mali empire and a LA nation for the 1700s Hausa city states. Bam, the whole west african area resumed in 5 nations.
>>
>>167269529
The omission of an Arab nation is pretty glaring now that you mention it.

yeah I didn't like fourth turning much because every mistake I did had people calling me out on it. mate i'm playing to have fun not to win a 30 player clusterfuck where you won't even see half the nations before the game ends
>>
>>167269816
If shoving it next to Abysia and Hinnom isn't a problem, I think the only real issue is that it might just end up being Ragha lite depending on what magic paths it gets. I'm reminded of that one mod nation that had recruitable cap only durable RoS casters (with high path strength besides)

Actually, it is specifically a weapon that ignore shields which means it is part of a subset of ranged attacks that ignore Storm. You usually see that applied to spells, but yeah.

Also, Storm Demons fly in storms too. They also fly and fire underwater, because the effect that limits flight is literally just storm
>>
>>167263408
Off the top of my head cultural groups not on the game:

°Mongolian Tengrism and central Eurasian Turkic myth - VERY different from LA TC, in fact you can make a whole EA (central eurasian horse archers fighting assyri- i mean abyssia with indo european elements) MA (turkic khaganate hordes) LA (pax mongolica tengrists) trilogy
°Southeast Asian and Tibetan Buddhism - both different from TC on some fronts but similar enough to be lumped together. would make great MA (aka "fuck india: the nation) and perhaps EA
I°ndonesian / Polynesian / Hawaiian myth (Buddhist and Muslim) - Polynesian EA, Buddhist MA, Muslim LA. could have lore with marignon
°You could make like five nations out of remaining indian myth - Lanka-Bandar-something is basically southern India in northern jungles and it doesn't cover anything related other geographical regions like west india and actual northern india / bengal. EA / MA ashoka's empire, LA Bengal, LA sikhs, Indian Demon kingonm a la Yomi, etc, etc.
°Anything arab. The closest thing to it is Abbysia (Assyrians that survived EA) and Ragha which something akin to caliphate era Iran. Could be EA arab tribes, MA Arab caliphate, EA Achaemenids, MA Parthia (we have the roman empire but not their historic archrivals!?), LA Abassids. Problem would be fitting them with Ragha if we agree they represent conquered Iran.
° North american natives, pampas natives, EA pre incas
° Everything African

you could also do meme religions for one off like Sunism (only religion left in medieval middle east after zoros and hindus were removed. Literally nobody would know this unless you played Crusader Kings II) and the Aboriginal myths (there's seven trillion of them) or South Chinese native myths (there's a couple pantheons in there with distinct looking fashion than traditional china), Finnish myth, etc.

>>167270338
Ragha is basically Iran coping with arab influences and Abyssia is an Assyria that survived the classical era

2. Separate commander and mage recruitment slots
3. A new magic path just so we can add a shitload more nations without getting samey.

That sounds wrong to me, I'm going to do some math.

It's AoE 4, so let's be optimistic and say it hits the full 12 humans. They're in a box or something, and have no gaps or non-full squares.

Each human gets a MR check against it. At 14 MR that's a 24% chance to ignore damage entirely, so an average of 3 (12 * .25) humans take damage.

Damage is 10, armor negating. I'll be generous again, and assume these are shitty human units with only 10 hp. Chance to kill a 10hp guy with 10 damage is 54%, so you'd kill only about 1.5 per cast against full-hp enemies. The other 1.5 which took damage will likely be in bad shape, though.

Even with optimistic values, 3 kills per cast isn't doable. You'll get closer to 3 kills per cast as enemy targets get lower on hp, but even if everything had 1hp left you wouldn't quite reach 3 kills per cast.

The real killer of astral fires is that falling fires, for only 1 less AOE, does 15 AP damage - which is more than 10 AN vs targets with 10 prot (not too uncommon in EA) even presuming the latter didn't have an MR check.

And no one lauds falling fires as the end all be all spells. As is the spell's only niche is killing ulmites and deep ones desu - and only then after they've been buffed with army of gold.
>>
>>167303280
Actually, Astral Fires would probably be a decent spell once Army of Gold comes out.

Falling fires vs army of gold is 10AP damage vs 20+ protection, and it won't set things on fire. Astral Fires does have MRN, but beyond Antimagic there isn't much you can do to protect yourself.
>>
>>167304013
Nevermind that post, I'm retarded.

I thought you were talking about Falling Fires here:
>As is the spell's only niche is killing ulmites and deep ones desu - and only then after they've been buffed with army of gold

I'd add it's also one of the very few UW-ok evocations, which might be handy sometime.
>>
>>167304013
It isn't decent, since Pillar of Fire can clear out 1 square through defenses vs human HP values, and many lategame elites have high MR (you're not punching through anti-magic'd high end blood summons . . . ever)

It is, however, better than falling fires at least. In the event your enemy has alt9, and you have evoc6 but not evoc8.

A standard fight where units with ship sprites fire at each other on a water background. Large units like asp turtles and giant eagles can also participate. Mages and archers might act as bonus weapons.

Enemy troops fight some of your troops on the deck. If they win then your ship is captured/sunk. UW and flying troops can easily initiate this.

2.Battlefield changing more based on scales and tile type. I want swamp tiles to be a huge pain in the ass to fight in unless the swamp is either completely dried (H3) or frozen (C3).

3.Possibility to upgrade equipment of troops with either gems or gold or anything really. Not all nations should switch to using solely summons for armies in late-game, some of them should have the possibility to keep using their mundane troops. (At higher cost of course)

Dakodonu requested additional land from a prominent chief named Dan (or Da) to which the chief responded sarcastically "Should I open up my belly and build you a house in it?" Star Fires might kill normal troops but not regenerating giants.
Horde of Skeletons don't impress fatigue neutral giants (also commanders spamming banishments).
So yeah, no hard hitters and mages casting useless spells.

With astral 2 you can make starshine skullcap to boost that to 3.

If you have any earth, you can make a crystal coin for an additional boost in astral. If you dont it can seriously be worth empowering an astral mage to E2 just so you can get that extra astral, but it all depends if you need it for rituals or magic items, since astral mages can form communions in battle and boost themselves.

Let me rephrase the question:

"How would a competent player handle this battle in early game." No assumptions on communion optimization, construction < 4.

When it comes to sauromatia this heuristic comes to my mind: Communion up a bunch of soothsayers and spam mind burn or stellar cascades. But it doesn't seem to be enough against beefy troops with high MR. But with 14 casters there should be more enemy casulties then 1. What other astral spells can you recommend?

Why the fuck not?
Giants are strongest early on, with a spike when Skittle Thugs come online and another spike when they start employing SCs, but the spikes don't make up for the fact that they become progressively worse the more mage support and researched spells the enemy has.

>>167329569
well to be ready to send 10 soothsayers on attack early game you have to have something, either that our sauro tanked his own research.

either way, if i wanted to fight super units like giants I'd find a way to disable them, or cast always hit evos such as clouds (sleep could and poison cloud come to mind). Flame arrows too given that you are sauromatia and those fancy horse archers are supposed to carry you through early game.

Either way, earth meld is imperative to fight them, that or having a communion'd up nature mage spam swarm and high number summon spells so the giants get busy

you have options, it's not hard to get diversity going with sauromatia.

yes, depending on the nation. i don't recall exactly but i don't think forts increase a lot GOLD in enghbouring provinces, so losing efficiency doesn't matter. they do strongly gather RESOURCES from neighbouring provinces, but this is important only for some nations and only for the beginning. if you have a lot of gold you either go to war or build forts to recruit more mages, no matter where this forces you to put the fort.

Just take your highest path mages out into the world and have them look for sites. You don't need 44444444 in every province because you probably won't have the mages to use those gems anyway. Just focus on the gems you're gonna be using and expand outwards in the late game.

Fort placement is one of those things that is a little trickier to understand. Adjacent forts are perfectly fine in specific circumstances, but generally you want them one province apart, yes.

i guess im still confused on fort placement, ill have to read on the manual again. i guess i just need to find a balance between good defense and having so many forts that i cripple my own troop production/starve them.
>>
>>167335314
You can basically get it down to a priority system once you understand it
>>
>>167335410
Forts can only help wrt supplies. Placing more forts close to each other will never cause starvation issues.

Fort placement does matter for resources. Place forts on or next to mountains, forests, and other high res provinces if you need resource intensive troops. Similarly, if you have cool cap only troops that require some resources, don't put forts in your cap circle. Otherwise, you can put forts down wherever. Nations like sauro, ermor, and EA/LA mictlan can quite safely fort their cap circle and wherever else since they don't care a whit about resources, whereas a nation like MA Ulm or Mari wants more of a checker formation. If you aren't planning on recruiting troops from some forts and just want them to make mages, it's totally fine to place them adjacent to each other.

Also, forts are only situationally serving as a defensive measure for things like thrones. In general, static defense in Dominions is limited to trap-spells like Round 1 RoS. You DO want lots of forts for most nations, but you want them so that you can make mages rather than to defend the province that they're placed in.
>>

>>
>>167336784
>trap spells
>RoS
examples of these/what is RoS? honestly a new concept to me.
>>
>>167336921
They both apply similar amounts of unrest, but RoT will also disease units in the province. If you're spamming it on a lab farm or a fort with a lot of units inside of it, it can be worth it.

>>167336930
RoS is short for Rain of Stones. It's a battlefield wide spell. Casting it round 1 lets you hit the whole battlefield before your enemy's mages can cast defensive spells, which allows it to kill enemy mages or lightly armored units. 2x casts will reliably wipe out a full army of human-sized casters, but 1x is already enough to cause some serious losses.

It can also be worth placing mages as static defenders when fighting nations that are raiding you with large numbers of disposable units. A fire elemental summoner is a better answer to Lemuria's 80 ghost scouting parties than 20 PD.

You can also use them with buff spells in conjunction with PD (in the late-game, Fog Warriors or Army of X helps makes PD traps very relevant).

If you know that your opponent is using thugs, you can also leave mages behind that are scripted to answer them, since even low level magic can be lethal to an expensive unit on its own.

Earth Snakes are not susceptible to either Rain of Stones or Earthquake. The former's 14 damage, which is fucking nothing to an Earth Snake, the latter's 8 AP damage, which is slightly scarier, but again, nothing that a snek would have to worry about.

Rush of strength
Can't really go wrong with fog warriors or mass flight

>>

As Lanka? It is definitely worth finding a way to break into Astral, even if it's just Lizard Shamen or Crystal Sorceresses that you can communion up. A lot of your stuff is vulnerable to MR-negates demon/undead counters, so Antimagic helps a lot with that.
>>
>>167339259

>>
>>167338271
>>167338904

>>
>>167339716

No, Antimagic's everything. There are a few battlefield-wide +MR holy spells that are undead-only, but those are national spells.
>>
>>167339716
You might be thinking of magic duel, mind burn, paralyze, soul slay, or enslave mind.
>>
>>167339259
Well, if I'm getting into S anyway: is it worth spending the extra resources either site-searching or alchemising the E and S gems necessary for Crystal+Slave Matrices?
>>
>>167339884
To add to that, Prothection of Sepulchere doesn't stack with Antimagic (it's basically the same buff but PoS needs undead to fail a MRN check to be buffed). To test this, cast Antimagic first, and you'll see that nobody's gonna cast PoS even if you script it. Unless you skelespam some more skeletons to the field.
>>
>>167340054
It can be if you only have limited access to a path but really need spells from it. If you have a lot of sabbath/communion slaves available, crystal matrixes are very much worth it.
>>

Alternatively, various spellings of the word Moloch.
>>
>>167346789
I really, really like Twist Fate.
>>
>>167346503
Matrixes are worth it eventually, just not necessarily worth designing your pretender around when Lanka already has a lot of strengths that a pretender can enhance.
On some nations, a pretender with something like E6/S6 can be good because they're both strong paths and can forge/cast a lot of handy stuff, but Lanka really wants a bless from it's pretender and E2/S2 is a bit of a waste of points in that case. By the time you really want matrixes to something you can't do with your national mages, you will probably be able to get them through some other means anyway.
>>
>>167346873

The S8's probably overkill. You could easily drop it to 6 for a couple points of production back. I was mostly thinking about Wish. Which is probably not gonna happen on a nation without national Astral.
>>
>>167346789
End goal involves high-path B summons because they seem good and I can't for the life of me figure out end-game, which seems effectively impossible without a high-path pretender.

What about this standard N9B9? I could have a mobile Raksharani, if the mobility would be an advantage compared to the protection of the fountain.
>>
>>167347685

I'd probably just empower a Daikini once, personally. Sure it's a pile of slaves, but once you have B4 you can make all the pure-blood boosters, which gets you the armour of thorns, which gets you to B8, which is all you need.
>>
>>167348115

Wait. Derp. Flesh Ward's armour slot as well. Okay, fair enough, might be worth taking some blood on the Pretender if you're set on Demon Lords.
>>
>>167347685
>because they seem good and I can't for the life of me figure out end-game

depends on the troops your are using really. check their stats, their strong points, and look to amplify it either with rapist magic or proper buff spells.

If you have D or B access, tarts and summoning devils will be an important part of your strategies.
>>
>>167318286
I had to do it twice.
>>
>>167347685
In my opinion of blood nations it's preferred that you don't get any Blood on your pretender unless you're specifically looking for that bless. Bloodslaves are so easy to attain with a blood nation, and so empowerment is just as easy. It's not like normal gem income where you get 10+ a turn, instead by end game you are racking in 100+ a turn, and mid game 50+ a turn. It's basically an empowerment per turn. Early game blood spells are easily attained though some summons or empowerment of bloodmages. I'd say those design points are more useful on other things. But I don't know Lanka well enough to give a specific example.

Just my 2cents.
>>
>>167350789

B9's not particularly great unless you've got massable sacreds anyway. This is why it's great on, e.g. Jags, which are not particularly amazing but can be shat out at a prodigious rate from every fort you own.
>>
>>167350789
I don't know what those design points could be better spent on, either. My main strategy doesn't really need my pretender to do anything, and given my sacreds B bless seems about as good as any other (besides N). It seems wrong to go to 9 with a path that none of my mages can do, too.

So there's probably a bunch more stuff the pretender could do, but I don't know what.
>>
>>167351330
Take Erf Snek for more expansion? Imprison something for better scales and more dom? Great Sage for research? Your pretender can always add something, and it's nice if it is something that's expensive to get in other ways. Tricky to break into a magic path with just a pretender, but you can turn a minor into a major pretty well.

Mari really wants scales, and maybe W9 for sacred cav. n9e4 can be cheap and useful for your angel endgame. There are arguments to be made for temp scale dumping at either end, cold3 for "snow" instead of rain and because freezing rivers is useful or heat3 for increased burning chances from fire spells and because most of your mages have innate fire resistance from fire paths.

you definitely want order 3 production 0+ growth3 though.

It's not the worst thing in the world, but I'd at LEAST take Prod 3. It's also going to be harder to do well early since its expansion parties will be lossier and less reliable, it won't have the W9 option for a cavalry overrun against a vulnerable neighbor, while also being weaker than an N9 build late since it doesn't have an angel bless.

It's basically a soft all-in on the flaming crossbow / fire ele midgame spike, while also offering potential battlemagic from your expensive air elemental boosters if you can get big enough from said midgame spike to be relevant.
>>
>>167393328
Not really, if the build was devoted to a midgame spike it would at least have magic 3 to hit that spike sooner.

I'm not really sure what the build is trying to be, since dormant SC with 0 paths to make the items for it is meh.
>>
>>167392840
>>no bless
>Lol who cares. You're Mari.
Have you even looked at marignon's stuff? Xbows are the only non-sacred they have which is worth using.

They have sacred rec-anywhere cavalry, sacred summons (which can thug/SC), and sacred mages. A decent bless is cheap, and benefits almost everything you field.
>>
>>167393420
What I meant by a soft all in on that spike is that the build requires doing well there and then gives more midgame options with its paths (hat for harbinger and E for boots and then later RoS and/or fog warriors on its own).

Basically, it hopes that your early game still goes okay in spite of not having an early game edge from your pretender, then it assumes that you're going to do well when Mari IS actually strong, and then it lets you extend that strength with its paths giving you better access to level 7 stuff if your level 4-5 stuff leaves you relevant.

I don't think it's a great (or even good) build, though.
>>
>>167393498
>sacred summons (which can thug/SC)
Just because they theoretically can doesn't mean they should.

Oh well, I posted the build in here and people said it was fine.

Is the cav worth using in non-summod? Is it one of those "non ideal, but better than the alternative" in vanilla?
I guess I didn't even consider an angel bless because it's soooo endgame.
>>
>>167393605
Harby thugs can be nice for countering stuff. They're versatile, though, and air mages are nice to use as mages too.

>>167393729
>Oh well, I posted the build in here and people said it was fine.
It's not bad enough to make you lose outright, but it's not good.

>I guess I didn't even consider an angel bless because it's soooo endgame.
An angel bless also gives your knights incredibly easy expansion.
>>
>>167393671
Strange, mod inspector states they're recruited from the house of fiery justice - i.e. the cap site.
>>
>>167394017
If it doesn't say (cap only) on a unit, it is not cap only.
>>
>>167393605
Why wouldn't you?

Harbingers are amazing (if expensive) thugs, and arch angels are better arch devils.

>>167393648
It's been that way for as long as I can remember.

>>167393729
>Is the cav worth using in non-summod? Is it one of those "non ideal, but better than the alternative" in vanilla?
It's a nice expansion tool. Can be useful for raiding too.

>I guess I didn't even consider an angel bless because it's soooo endgame.
Harbingers are only conjuration 6, and they're the main angel summon you'll want to use.

You know this is the right choice.
>>
>>167394437
And what cheaper alternative does marignon get?
>>
>>167394339
And if one has a N9 bless, what exactly makes a harbringer better than a Golem for thugging? A golem after all is only 5 more pearls, and has far more HP, and is immune to far more effects.
>>
>>167394582
Have you considered just not bothering with thugs? This isn't Dom 3.
>>
>>167394813
I like harbies for answering stuff like Tarts and Golems which are most easily killed by a thug with the right counter gear.
>>
>>167394560
Aren't you putting yourself at quite a disadvantage with that N9 bless for half the game?
Your recruitable sacreds don't benefit from it much. That magic 2 is probably so you can get Harbringers sooner, but you still need a mage to summon them. Getting an S4 naturall on StR would be 1/160 chance, so not really viable, which means you need Cons6 for Skullcap.

Not to mention that Marignon needs to research quite a bit of combat magic beforehand, before they can even think about getting their national summons.

I don't think I've ever seen Marignon use their Angels extensively in any of my games and the main reason is because they are so late and that you are gimping yourself if your pretender build is made for them.
>>
>>167394560
>>167395413

>It's another episode of "but if I get my sacred summons they will be unstoppable"
>>
>>167395413
N9 knights are pretty solid frontliners, desu. They expand losslessly so you end up with a fair few of them, you need very few to take on enemy PD, and when you need to ball up, they do a great job standing in front of your crossbow hordes.
>>
>>167396248
Non-N9 knights would make pretty solid frontliners too and all heavy cav and take PD losslessly so that isn't much of an argument.
>>
>>167394605
The difference is a lot more than 5 gems once you consider equipment costs. Harbinger comes with sacred + self-bless, magic movement, and flying.

Harbinger - 25 gems
Vine Shield - 10 gems
Fire Brand - 10 gems
Total - 45 gems

vs

Golem - 30 gems
Vine Shield - 10 gems
Fire Brand - 10 gems
Shroud - 5 gems
Winged Boots OR Starshine Skullcap - 10 gems
Total - 65 gems

Additionally, golem is still quite a bit inferior against PD - no awe and less protection leads to them gaining afflictions much faster.

>>167394813
No, because being able to take provinces which your other forces can't reach is great.

Ignoring thugs means your enemy has more time to organize a defense, gets more income, and doesn't need to protect his inner provinces. That leads to much harder and longer wars.

In lategame they're also great for springing RoS traps so you don't lose your army.

>Imma not use any armor and hope Awe and mistform save me

Add in at least another 5 gems onto the harbringer for armor, possibly another 5 for a helmet as well - unless you want it to die to literally anything wielding a magic anything.
>>
>>167397219
>>167396582

In Summod, Angels of Fury are better at the minimal gear thug role. They don't have magic phase movement and they can't be swapped into air-mage duties, though, so much less versatile. If you just need to take on PD or trigger an RoS trap, though, they can do it naked.
>>
>>167397219
I have never seen nor heard of people deploying magic weaponry against harbingers, but if they start doing and it works it I'll give harbingers armor. Before then it's a waste of gems.

>>167397423
I'd probably still do harbinger thugs for the versatility. Angels of Fury are marginally better, but can't do anything but thug.

Harbingers can join armies as air mages to turn around a vital battle, or trapeze to counter enemy thugs.

Have you ever had Malakal diplomanced all of your allies to attack you? Did he trick you to send him your gems in exchange for something you didn't really need?
Did he win all of the games you played in?

It's your chance to join a game where Malakal can be beaten. If you do, you will play as Vanheim pretender in a disciple game, fighting together with Bandar-Pangaea and Nazca-Asphodel to get rid of Malakal's team, Jotun-Mictlan.

We can do it. Let's do it.

Nah, C'tis lost the bump then a few turns later took the province back. Honestly I was more shocked by the audacity than anything else. Of course I could have just invaded him for that (or any other reason, or even still now - this is a war game) but I wasn't in a good position to attack right then and I figured I could get some gold out of him in the mean time.

But for the price he paid he can keep it. It's not a particularly wealthy or strategically important province and I'd rather be doing other things with my armies.

>>
>>167411371
Ordered from bottom to top, then by left to right (I think, might be right to left instead).

It's based off the province centre, so can end up being quite odd.
>>
I'm pretty sure the absolute top most province (as marked by a single white pixel in the map image) is #1. Then it scans down, counting up the provinces. This is why you can see a general trend towards higher numbers the lower you get on the map, though this can be a bit hard to tell on wrap maps.

Pretty curious, threads seem to reach page 10 and die faster on weekends, but our posting rate is roughly the same really, I wonder why.
>>
>>167418112
The obvious answer (assuming you're right) is that every other thread has more activity on weekends.
>>
>>167418112
It's because this game is play-by-email. We all take the same small amount of turns regardless of weekday except when a new game starts. Other games will see more play on the weekend when there's more free time.
The other explanation is that Dominions is played primarily by floorshitter NEET scum, but I doubt that.

How do you go about "unlocking" blood? Do you wait to summon vampires and demon lords or do you empower while searching with non-blood mages somehow?
>>
>>167428773

The first 50 slaves are the hard bit. After that it's a matter of turns and empowers.
>>
>>167429093

Do you find it worth the effort? Which nations do you like to use this strategy on?
>>
>>167429265

It's worth it if you have national death. I've used it before with C'tis (MA and LA). You're never going to compete for Blood unique summons, but Vampire Lords are good stuff, and even if those are too much of a pain then you can still produce useful Blood items.
>>
Due to my games taking an overwhelming amount of time lately I am looking for a sub for the following two games:

FourthTurning (Xibalba)
DriftKing (Niefelheim)

Both nations are in REALLY good shape. If anyone is interested in taking over one of these, we can talk on steam about details.

>>
>>167424424
If it makes you feel better, Vanheim killed them the very same turn by coincidentally invading the province they retreated to.
>>
>>167430982

Depends what other paths you have, but Bloodstones and Armours of Thorns are both very useful boosters. Robe of the Magi is phenomenal as well, but that'll usually need a pretender built for it, so whatever.

Even just in pure blood, stuff like Boots of Youth are handy for old-age casters, Lifelong Protection is amazing for assassins, Flesheater is a seriously underrated antiSC/Thug weapon. That's off the top of my head.
>>
>SC pretender gets an affliction at game start
