the pro sold very well. scorpio is postured to do the same. The reason last gen was so old was because the initial investment was so painful for sony (huge loss on each unit) and MS (RRoD). They needed to recoup losses and were hesitant to repeat it. the bottom line is money and people have been shown to support much shorter gens, they will continue to happen. VR also demands much more powerful hardware to give a good experience and people have been falling over themselves to get it, so they'll be much more likely to buy a better system in order to use VR.

as opposed to a true next gen console not doing that for ports? This intermediary upgrade of generations is a new concept. No they aren't full blown next gen but they are a quite a bit more powerful than the original consoles. the difference is instead of a 7 year hardware gap making an obvious divide between gens there is going to be more of a gentle change. They could run an intel tick tock system, alternating between generation upgrade and hardware revision every 3 years.

But you should probably try out their GOTY podcasts, they're always a meaty package with lots of hours. And its fun to hear the different thought processes behind those lists and remembering what games came out in the year. Though I don't play even half of the games they talk about. I really don't know what to tell you dude. The PS4 Pro is a lopsided upgrade. The GPU is about twice as powerful. The CPU is marginally overclocked, but still is a weak CPU. It has the same amount of memory, which is a little faster.

All it is designed to do is make PS4 games run at a higher resolution. It doesn't have the legs to push it beyond that, because it's held back by the CPU and RAM, and developers aren't allowed to make pro-specific games anyway.

Even Mark Cerny said the same thing, that he considers a new generation to be defined by a large improvement in CPU power, and a large increase in memory, and he's right. More CPU power and memory means better physics, better AI, more actors onscreen, better art assets, etc. All that stuff is just as important, more important, than resolution.

I really doubt that we're even going to see a PS5 Pro. By the time the PS5 comes out, 4k TV adoption will be common, but I highly doubt the industry will be trying to push 8k within that timeframe. There would be no point to doing a pro, unless they actually did a BALANCED hardware upgrade.
