why are the EXALT missions in LW1 so fucking bullshit? this is the least amount of fun you can have playing this game. especially the 4 man extractions.
>>
How the hell do you liberate a region? I'm 3 months in and still nothing

Busy watching JoiNrbs crush L/I LW2. Also jacking it from time to time.

>>166417779
Ok, here we go again.

First, complete a secret mission in the region. This isn't labeled as anything special, no way to know what it is, sorry.

Second, you'll start seeing Liberation missions pop up in that region. Complete two of those.

Third, that'll unlock the Network Tower. Complete that.

Fourth, that unlocks the ADVENT HQ. When you complete that, the region is liberated and you unlock the Avatar Project.
>>
So I'm infiltrating a regional base or something right now. Is this how you bring the avatar project down or at least how you learn where you are at the moment with the avatar project? I wish Dor came back so he could port more female titanfall outfits.
>>
>>166417936
assuming that comment is sardonic I don't know what else to tell you

EXALT missions are pretty easy if you plan well

I think the main thing is too not run missions, so I could be wrong. Maybe put people on recruiting and supplies and not do missions?
I'm not very familiar with it, but running missions in other regions while ignoring that region should reduce the strength. I don't know how quickly.

Why does it feel like the atmosphere in /xcg/ has become a lot more angry and hostile since LW2 released?
>>
>>166420360
Because people are angry and hostile to change. Just like when X2 came out.
It also brought more people back to the general. So more chance for loud angry vocal people.

i beat base xcom 2 at commander difficulty when it came out but im having a lot of trouble with lw2 on standard difficulty

Soon â„¢

also, is Spark useful in LW2? I don't have any dlcs and I want mechs in my LW
>>
>>166426057
I think the left is the amount you collected so far and the parenthesis the possible amount you could get in a month.

Don't quote me on that tho.
>>
>>166428646
I got a FIFTY TWO day repair timer for almost losing the SPARK in the mission you get him, so I've been pumping every defensive option.

They never ever shoot him, so I can't judge it too well.

They're giving them 5 ablative health in 1.1, so I think they'll no doubt be useful at that point.
>>
Old thread i left as it got full so couldn't see all the replies. But what is the ideal squad and base build? Lost to two side by side sectopods and some guy suggested more grenadiers. What makes them better than say 3 specialist?
>>
>>166429171
grenades are incredibly overpowered
>>
>>166412732
Is there a mod or way to prevent concealment breaking for interacting or hacking mission objectives?

i.e. planting x4 charges, hacking relays, hacking vip containment units etc

I feel like if you were able to sneak past all the enemies under the time limit you should be rewarded. I mean you don't get corpses but you get out alive.

If this is somehow op is there a class, skill, or even item that accomplishes this? I can't be the only one who wants this right? I want to be able to metal gear it up sometimes.
>>
>>166429878
You talking with or without LW2? Cause doesn't LW2 nerf the cover destruction capabilities of the grenades?

Or are you talking about armor shred potential?
>>
>>166429171
Grenades do everything, better grenades do everything better. They remove cover, opening aliens up to fire, shred armor, guaranteed damage, sometime bonus effects to keep enemies down if you can't finish them, open passageways, proxy mines are the best way to start a fight, salvo lets you do the above and take a shot, and probably much more.
>>
>>166430056
I think he's talking vanilla, where grenades were the stuff of dreams and legends.

>>166429171
Grenadiers are amazing. I would say focus on either left or right side on each one, maybe some middle perks inbetween. Left is blow cover and do damage and right side is support.

Specialists I used for Revival/Aid Protocol and range hacking only.

My current best squad has

2 Sharpshooters, one focused on holo targeting and the other full damage/aim/crit, he also has some amazing AWC perks. The perk that makes killing someone on lower ground and gives you a turn back is OP with steady aim.
2 Grenadiers - Either 2 full damage or 1 damage and 1 support
1 Ranger - my officer
1 Technical - fire perks pretty much all the way + focus on mobility + exo suit
1 Shinobi - just to give my snipers vision, sometimes I bring a pure melee
1 Gunner
1 Assalt - Arc thrower build
1 Specialist

For lower than 10 men I just remove stuff based on the mission

I guess I'm in the minority here, but I have a really hard problem utilizing stealth on missions in LW2. Even if I don't take utility items and boost mobility, it seems like there are too many enemies on the map, and not enough turns available to go around them safely. How are people making this work?
>>
>>166434569
"FXAA" (MSAA is often ineffective in XCOM 2 and has a severe performance cost)
- "Tile AO" (SSAO is one of the most demanding effects in any game)
- "Medium" shadow quality(~25% performance boost)
- "Simple" depth of field instead of "Bokeh" (action scene performance hog, little visual difference)
- "Screen Space Reflections" disabled (nicer reflections and lighting but a ~10% FPS penalty)
>>
>>166434982

That's the only way I ever move my troops, regardless of how I'm playing the mission. My problem is that on nearly every map there are multiple pods between me and the objective, and not enough time to go all the way over or around the buildings and landscape to avoid them but still get to the objective in time.

Some of us who abandoned xcom 2 came back

and we have seen that nothing has improved and criticize the lack of improvement and general buffoonery/incompetence that most of the autists who stuck with the general have come to accept and put up with.

Xcom 2 isn't a bad game, but it was still a failure from a design perspective; nothing more than a rehash of the first game. Long War 2 is just, I don't even know wtf lumpy is trying to do with long war 2, but it's retarded.

Maybe firaxis or lumpy will get their shit together, but largely I suspect they won't. Especially with being surrounded by so many sycophants for so long.

>>166447923
No, I agree with you. Most of the design decisions are completely and utterly retarded and were held up because the beta testers had intimate knowledge of the game.

Hands up, how many of you failed because of Avatar bullshit because the Liberation missions simply refused to spawn?

How many of you even knew that there even WAS a Liberation mission chain?

Out of those people that did, how many of you knew that there was from an outside source? i.e a Youtuber, which were probably the beta testers?

The mod doesn't have anywhere close to the proper documentation it needs, even though they have the in game encyclopedia, most of this shit still comes from outside sources.

How can we be expected to win when we are bumbling around in the dark with only guess work to go on because the devs didn't think it was needed because the play testers didn't give them the feedback that nothing made sense without talking to the devs.

You need the 99% retard peasant playtesters for your game to actually be fun/sell.

Damnit just lost one of my most experienced shinobi because of sextoy panic. Fucker couldn't get to the LZ in time and was captured.

Is there any chance of a rescue mission happening? Also I would have retreated earlier, but the game didn't let me. I assume it's so that you can't call the dropship right next to where the VIP is, but in all honesty you I think you need a way out if the opposition is unexpectedly strong.

>activate 2 pods at the same time because a patrol uncovered my soldiers by flanking just as I was ready to ambush
>get tied down in trench warfare
>another pod runs in
>fuck
>alien reinforcements drop in behind my positions
>FUCK
>meanwhile shinobi is sneaking around to activate the VIPs and run out since if the timer runs out, everyone is dead
>discovered after hacking the door
>shot twice
>tries limping out
>gets psi-panicked right in front of the LZ
The only one who survived was a grenadier who was lucky and survived sprinting through the enemy lines and the worthless 3 resistance contacts who were in the cells. What a massive cock-up.
>>
>>166448272
Indeed, but it feels like half of the gameplay isn't designed very well at all. It's very scitzo, many decisions directly contradict each other.

They wanted to be able to have fights last longer, but kept the timers. Ok, they aren't THAT horrible as long as you know how to engage. But since fights are suppose to last, if you are in a good position, you will want to dig in,right? Well congrats, Advent knows where you are because pods talk to each other and they can hear the gunfire and explosions. Prolonged firefights mean adds incoming and on higher difficulties means that every individual member of a pod might get to take MULTIPLE actions against you.

This makes it so that engaging with pods doesn't work in your favor at all on almost ALL missions in the game except the ones that force you to engage. Combine this with reinforcement drop ins that continue to get worse and worse every time and you want to finish missions as fast as possible even on missions that have no timer, because these reinforcements are another form of timer.

The game at this point doesn't know what it wants to be other then a masochists wet dream. Sure it's possible to beat, but the majority of the game will be spent running from pods in stealth until you get something like a supply raid, or a retaliation.

LW1 was hard, but fair, sometimes bordering on anti fun. LW2 took everything that might have been fun and nerfed it into the ground, with play testers admitting that they looked for things that made the game 'easy', at least in their eyes, and didn't just try to discourage, but actively shat on it.

It's going to take many patches from 'normal' people playing the game to figure out a good balance of bullshit to fun ratio.
>>
>>166448552
Blame Jake for that one. Cover mechanics didn't account for flames being able to go where the oxygen is and targeting is based on tiles, not by projectile.
>>
>>166448834
I've said this before, multiple times, even when xcom 2 first launched

the original x-com's turn units were better than the shitshow that both new xcom games have.

>>
>>166449140
Maybe, but I doubt anyone wants to. Aside from that, the real problem isn't even in the tactical layer, it's the strategy layer bullshit.

They wanted to make it feel like decisions mattered, that taking a mission and then having something come up meant you need to see about making a squad for that one too. But often the missions feel so unrewarding that you just don't bother.

23 intel? The only reason to take it is that it might be the Liberation mission. 3 Haven members? Ok, but when you already have 13 guys, anymore feels like a waste. Enemy Materiel gets you some loot, which is ok.

None of the missions feel nice to take, getting a supply raid is good, but you need to let the force level get higher for that, which is bad for the early game and piddling around trying to just contact regions isn't going to work.

Between liberation mission bullshit, invisible avatar project, Skulljack costing you even MORE time then it did before, while Avatar project raises even faster, with no way to counter it because facilities don't appear until you liberate a region AND the fact that it is possible for facility progress to transfer to the Avatar project permanently, nothing in the game is suppose to be taken slow, which is completely counter to this being a LONG war.

It's just rush rush rush, or get your face punched in. You can't even play a war of attrition since it's possible for the Avatar project to just complete because faculties progress transfers.

What the fuck were they thinking? Nothing about the strategy layer is interesting at all. It's not busy, it's just boring.

The strategic layer requires some actual complexity in it. it's been completely half-assed

there's no actual intel-gathering. You never need to assassinate key political figures, deal with moles, kidnap important aliens/advent/sympathizers, or break out your own. Some of the missions are kind of there, but there's absolutely no meat to them.

And on the resistance front, it's literally you against the entire world. The game doesn't even half-ass an attempt at making it seem like there's more to the resistance than your single squad of 5-6 badasses and their alien freighter. It's fucking stupid. Actual literal wars and engagements should be fought - some you can even get in on if it really matters - like recovering alien tech from a downed UFO in an active warzone.

Basically the game completely fails at making you into a special forces resistance force.
>>
>>166449561
It seems like they were trying to make the strategic game more dynamic, and to be fair they did very slightly, but it's not in a way that actually adds anything to the gameplay unlike LW1 where you could genuinely feel if you were kicking the ayy's asses or if you were really falling behind.

What the hell is this. Literally everything you just talked about is in the game.

>assassinate
What are assassinate or capture dark vips
>deal with moles
A mission where you have to track down and kill the faceless draining all your supplies
>kidnap important aliens/advent/sympathizers
Dark vips again
>or break out your own
You can rescure you own soldiers, rescue haven rebels, and other vips

The game doesn't even half-ass an attempt at making it seem like there's more to the resistance than your single squad of 5-6 badasses and their alien freighter
Except you will be running a minimum roster of 20 (I don't know how big it is supposed to be), and your rebel fighter for each regions actually matter and will actually go on missions from time to time, and other missions have rebel soldiers come to assist

Seriously, all these posts make me feel like we are not even playing the same game.

>load order

Technically there is load order here too, but no one bothers with it, that said it's pretty straightforward, if 2 mods conflict then the one that loads after overwrites the previous one. I don't think there's even a way to change the load order of mods, maybe with the alternate mod launcher there is. Either way it's really unimportant.

When you get mods on the workshop it tells if you if they need another mod.

Very few mods conflict with other mods, and usually it's just UI stuff so mostly minimal stuff.

>>

ini editing is optional if you want to tweak things.
>>
>>166452634

.ini editing is how you modify mod stuff if you want, for example you might get a weapon mod, and if you want the mod weapons to do more damage then you can go into it's .ini files and change a couple of values there.

For example right now with Long War 2, a lot of people have problems with the timers on missions, so you can go to their .ini files and change how long timers are.

That's just if you feel like changing something though.

Base game ini editing is only if you're making your own personalized tweaks or are optimizing your graphics settings with that one link that floats around here. Otherwise LW2's devs encourage you to tweak the ini for it if you want to change something.
But theres nothing necessary like Skyrim. I get where you're coming from because I extensively modded Skyrim a few months ago. XCOM 2 is a fucking cakewalk in comparison, you don't have to actively fight with the game's engine and foundations to get everything working.

Anyone had trouble with the Network Tower mission?

Stupid game makes the map where 2/3 of the enemies were in another locked off building where you could not get flashbang or grenade in without a grenadier.

The enemy patrol had a vanilla viper in it and I didn't expect it to pull in my grenadier to his doom. The mission went smoothly until after I hacked the tower and saw the objective to KILL all the ayylmaos.

High cover did not save me from the viper pulls, pulling me in one by one while I couldn't get a good shot because it was hiding in high cover. Fuck snakes.

What is considered "something that sets back their progress"? I take it extract VIP / resistance goons / hack the item missions don't count?
I completed 2 gatecrashes, but then no other main-chain-looking mission popped up. The only ones I skipped that didn't look like normal hack / extract vip were assassinate missions, are they also part of the chain?

The three main mission types are Gorilla Oops, Liberation missions (a mission chain for each region) and Blacksites/Facilities. The last hinders the Avatar Project.

I could be a bug as I'm very unlucky with these - one campaign ended when the AI broke and I restarted after 2 boring shit missions of paralyzed advent. Most conventional weapon mods have 1 accessory slot. ARs have 4 ammo capacity in vanilla and only 3 in LW2, environmental damage is nerfed on misses in LW2 and some of the possible damage spread is tweaked on the LW2 guns.

So, you can still use the modded weapons, but it won't have the same stats as the LW2 weapons of that tier and will therefore mess with the intended balance of LW2.

The LW2 mod file has an .ini of weapon stats - for me it's C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\workshop\content\268500\844674609\Config\XComGameData_WeaponData. Browse through to find the values of the LW2 weapons and then go into the mod folder to change those numbers to match.

They ramp up to 5 pretty quickly, and then the 8 man pods hit, and then at the very end before eveyone died I saw a 10-13 man pod. Not even kidding. Also these reinforcements were dropping higher tiered enemies. That means advanced advent, mutons, advanced sneks and just loads of rubbish.

Outside of the timer for the Cavalry most missions have a "Bucket" for reinforcement drops that calls in the drop when the Bucket reaches a value of 1.0. Values are added to the Bucket per turn based on difficulty, mission type, and a 1-20 roll for alert modifier. The composition of the reinforcement pod ramps up the more that show.
Sabotage an Alien Facility, the Blacksite and the Forge Facility are the exceptions to the above bucket system. Those missions will only have reinforcements in the form of the Cavalry as stated by these lines:
>MissionType=GP_Blacksite_LW, CavalryOnly=true
>MissionType=Sabotage_LW, CavalryOnly=true
>MissionType=GP_Forge_LW, CavalryOnly=true
I unfortunately can't quite find what would stand out as being the Network Tower or Psi Gate mission type.

Jack in the Box
>>
>>166482984

>>
>>166482941
Additionally that 1-20 roll isn't the actual value added to the bucket, the numbers in that roll are attached a steadily increasing value the higher the roll is. The highest (and technically unluckiest) roll of 20 adds a value of 0.675 to the Bucket.

So that you have hard timer missions and soft timer missions. They function differently, they don't play the same.
Soft timer and hard timer do not accomplish the same thing, and having both means more mission variety. I do think early game could use more soft-timer and no-timer missions, but apparently by mid-game it is supposed to be a 50/50 split.

I hated LW1 because of the 'magnificient' design (but I dropped it pretty early on in its cycle of updates due to that, maybe it got better, idk) but I'm having a blast with LW2, it feels a lot fairer and I can still recover from punishing losses - to the point where I'm getting my first game into the early endgame, and might even complete it before 1.1 hits.

About the only thing I find myself wishing for is the ability to auto-resolve missions I am clearly going to win. Running a light resistance mission is getting boring because I mop up too quickly.

What he said

>>166486230

Minus the overworked part, i'm just lazy and easily distracted. Right now i'm working on making a LW2 compatible version of the Merc Plasma Weapons, should be out this week.

As for this alien mod, it'll probably take longer because LW2 drastically changed the way ayy pods and ai works so now i don't know what the fug.

I'm also thinking of making a different mod before finishing this one just to get back into things, haven't decided on what but it'll probably be something cosmetic, right now i'm thinking about making some new armor for tier 2 but i haven't put much thought into it.
>>

The only issue right now is that since i haven't had a chance to actually make any progress on LW2 and i don't know how stuff works yet the weapons will have the same stats as LW2's plasma weapons. I'm going to restart once 1.1 comes out. My shit is all retarded right now.

I don't have properly dedicated haven advisers.
I don't have a good reserve of haven recruits, so every retaliation attack nukes me to the stone age.
I started GTS way too late, so my havens are full of Faceless.
I don't have enough soldiers because I underestimated how much AWC+GTS+Wounds+Infiltration+Havens wears on the units you can actually use.
I don't have enough Tacticals so I can't destroy cover well.
I don't have enough damage Grenadiers so I can't destroy cover well.
I don't have a good mobility ranger to double barrel nuke things.
I don't have a gun Shinobi so I can actually have them participate in a fight without them triggering a new pod/getting flanked.

In addition all my Shinobis and Grenadiers will have their skill trees fucked on top of the mission to get SPARKs being limited to Force Strength 8+, so I might as well wait.

If it's on sale it's alright. Additionally if you have money to spend. Alien Hunters add's one mission but some pretty great gear that along with some mods becomes fantastic. But base game can induce high level of suffering as Boss battles can occur on any mission. Kill them and you can make MONSTER HUNTER armor out of them. Also the only legit jetpack in game.

Shen's gift is a cool mission. Unfortunetly it's one mission & sparks(MEC troopers but just robots) base game are only good early game. Though again there are great mods out there & LW2 is gonna buff SPARKs heavily. But having either or both of the two DLC's lets you have more mods that use them as a base & if you're a modfag it's worth that for that reason alone.

Why do I do this to myself? I've done dozens of missions and I have yet to liberate a region. There comes a point where I get so sick of missions I start skipping some, and there is no way to know if the ones I'm skipping are critical.

My problem with LW2 right now is that missions seem pointless aside from getting intel or ranking people up. You don't get supplies. You don't get corpses. You don't get alloys or elerium. You don't slow down the avatar project. It's just mission after mission that doesn't do shit.

Indeed, at least in LW1 you were stopping the spread of panic. Missions had a point in and of themselves and the tactical layer had more feedback to the strategy layer. There isn't anything like that here. The strategy layer is just a mission spawning screen and only the tactical layer changes the strategy layer and not even that much.

i have no idea why nobody has modeled hitscan ballistics checks into xcom 2 yet, just make it so if something counts as a miss or a low-damage hit do a bunch of hitscan checks with some random spread and if enough of them hit, have it count as a hit

The advantage of the x-com shooting system was that close-range shots without cover in the way was genuinely effective, because even with a low-ish to-hit percentage you had the ballistics modelling that made it so you'd always get a decent hit in.
To convert the system to help with grazing, I'd make it so each weapon has a certain number of hitscan 'shots' with each hit doing a certain amount of damage, and if the hitscan test ends up doing more damage than the RNG then that's what the game should go with. That way, there's less of those bullshit moments where you wonder how the fuck you just did terrible damage.

Other huge, elephant-in-the-room sized problems of nu-xcom are, for me, the 2 action points system and how cover works.

>one tile short of cover/door
>it'll cost your whole turn instead of preventing you from aiming as precisely/stocking up AP for next turn

>go to hug a corner
>lol you're spotted/exposed because trained operatives have to be told to keep their fucking heads down and not expose themselves needlessly
And, lest we forget, LOS. Walls and ceilings may as well not exist in this game.

I can understand the close range stuff, though I think you could accomplish the same thing with a functional aim curve that spike really high at 1-2 tiles.
I'm not sure I understand the hitscan part, since that's not a part of the original x-com, and og x-com had grazing as part of the damage system.

Are you basically just advocating for their to be two seperate rolls and going with the highest?

Depends on difficulty & what you as a player enjoy. If you start early game with just standard ballistics. Especially without many specialists the mission can be a meat grinder. Too late and it can be an easy wipe that's admittdly good (if you have unlocked caps for rank ups) way to rank up soldiers with mags & plasma gear slaughtering pathetic robots. It's suggested to have a good 1-2 specialists in a team going on the mission if only to hack other bots to draw fire away from your team. Essentially the later you do it the easier it will be. In any case it's a fun mission & a bit of challenge will probably increase your enjoyment before you get to higher tier gear. Blue screen rounds make this mission cry.

OG X-Com had the whole 'if miss, fire projectile and whatever happens happens' system which was great. I'm suggesting to do something similar albeit with some awkward fumbling necessary because Nucom has a very different way of dealing with combat.
>Are you basically just advocating for their to be two seperate rolls and going with the highest?
In a way, I guess so. Just one is a straight up RNG roll and another is a series of RNG rolls to get random spread of shots followed by seeing if those shots end up hitting the intended target.

So would you say that the goal here is that the closer you are to a target, the higher chance these "hitscan" rolls will give you a better damage roll then the initial pure dice roll? That would be interesting, though everyone would be alot less survivable.

He's advocating for the whole "a projectile collides with stuff" you tool.

thank you for you help.
Does anyone else though know what the minimum hack success means?
For example minhacksuccess=50
Does that mean it's a a baseline 50% success at any hacking level? Or that you need 50 hacking to have any real chance of succeeding?

Such a marked improvement
>>
>>166501640
Yeah, exactly. The end result of it likely would be that being out of cover would be much more lethal and being in cover would be much less lethal, which is something that got adjusted almost immediately by the LW devs in the EU version of the mod.

>>166501556
You could do the exact same thing I was suggesting without ever having any physical modelling of projectiles or anything like that, I'll fully admit that, but having that physical element effects game feel in the same way that having the effect of bullets going straight through an enemy with the words 'missed' effects gamefeel as EU/EW had happen thousands of times

Do music mods work fine with LW2?

>controlling your activations

Almost impossible on some maps. Your fight WILL bring pods to you unless they are two screen lengths away, but pods also talk between each other and give your position to unactivated pods, so while they won't go into yellow alert, you will still have pods abandoning their patrol path to slowly walk towards your position.

It punishes digging in and having a firefight since repositioning might activate another pod, but a pod running into you is just as if not worse as they could run in, reposition for a flank and shoot with nothing you can do.

I LIKE the reaction shots, but it currently makes the aliens too powerful. If they want to shoot, then that should be their action, not moving and shooting, let alone getting MULTIPLE actions.

The system works on large maps where you have a chance for pods to not hear and to be able to end firefights and then move, with pods now having to look for you because they don't know where you are.

But most maps are still small as shit and yet are getting crammed with 20 or more enemies as the game continues to ramp up. Pods are literally around the corner and running into one means triggering the next one. It's actually more advantageous to just trigger them on your turn, since they don't take a reaction that way, even if on yellow alert.

You would think that Long War would have wanted to get away from this hyper aggressive playstyle, but it's just compounded the various issues with vanilla and. Punishing the player for trying to alpha strike, but also punishing for having long drawn out fire fights. How the hell are you suppose to play? Because it seems like they more just want you to AVOID fighting.

Why does the planting x4 charges objective break concealment? I can understand hacking a relay or hacking a vip cell. Is there an option to turn this off?
