I'm not saying they are bad but its usually what the infantry are protecting/holding that wins the matches. High damage, low AP infantry can really shine gutting through a state troop formation.

Cav, handgunners, magic and artillery will do the damage you need. State troops are to make sure they get their good scenarios. Chaos are the opposite idea, everything is to support the warriors

And my point is that the fact that their infantry can hold the line against a melee centric faction is OP. Their infatry should die fast against chaos forcing the Empire player to keep his range mobile, protected and distract using the cavalry and magic at his disposal. Currently you can sit there (which dwarfs can't do) and do everything at leisure. They also have near matchless melee flyers.

Well the balance isn't there yet for sure. The disorder factions all kind of got the shit end of the balance stick for some reason aside from Vamps who have been CA's little pet forever.

It used to be far worse with how GS used to perform. And how damn cost effective and spammable demis were.

certainly, but its not just about balance, it's that CA have preconcieved ideas baout what each faction should be that won't translate into total war games. It's party due to them copying 8th edition which is cancer as far as infantry goes but also part of how they balance infatry against monsters and overwhelming units. They also need to make factors like armour and unit health more important. Wth dwarfs for instance, you should never want to charge them unless you expect to be held up for a long time taking steady losses.

Flying goon squad is the best way of dealing with it by picking off a smith. You can't let 2 or 3 left in the end. Greenskins could use a couple more hero/lord options (black orc leadership).

I wouldn't mind being able to upgrade blocks on infantry to larger sizes, some RoR do this as a feature but it'd be nice to be able to shove more numbers. Also a necessity for upcoming factions (Skaven).

exactly, which is why CA haven't got infantry balanced. The horde rule was a massive upgrade for infantry and monsters got thunderstomp to preserve them as anti-infantry since having 6+ attacks in stats is pretty overwhelming in the combat phase. Still horde was an overpowered way of making cheap shitty infantry durable and capable of leeching enemy units.

I wouldn't mind some hordes being more swampy with their basic main-line infantry. Greenskin (not black orc spam), Beastmen, and Chaos Marauders are low tier armies that are useless due to the under performance of their core units relying so heavily on crutches since around 70% of the army will not do anything aside from dying.

Gors, Marauders, boyz, etc. should die, but they should do a lot more damage than they do and make a contribution that you actually have to think about and plan for.

I'm not sure what the answer is but hordes need something like 8th ed to help them out in TWW, Aspiring Champs were a good start and marauder builds were able to do something for the first time.

Alright folks, rate my kingdom

Operation: WE wuz a massive success, and we are now rolling in money after consolidating the former egyptian territories, with aegyptos itself making us over 13k per turn even with corruption at around 60%. Currently working on taking over the rest of asia minor.

Baktria, the 2 remaining steppe factions, and knossos are all satrapies, meaning that the east is locked down, and the mediterranean is safe thanks to the cretans + my military alliance with the hellenic league. (unfortunately I can't levy cretan archers in dei, thinking about getting a submod to allow it but i don't know how badly it screws up the reforms)

As for trade I'm currently sending a fleet out towards spain/up to britain to look for trading partners, hopefully rome hasn't blobbed up too badly in barbarland

My faction leader who has overseen this massive expansion is an 80 year old king who has served with his men in the frontlines for almost 60 years, fighting on foot in a phalanx in 3 different continents

The good thing about weaker low leadership troops is that even if they break they'll probably rally with 50% of their health left.

If a unit is routing its not doing anything for you. That unit isn't fighting in the mosh pit, its not flanking your enemy, its not contributing. When your unit routes I now have another resource to shore up another front of the fight and if I have a cheap fast attacker they get free kills as your units as they just get eaten. And with those armies there is no "dependable core" those guys running away in the first 3 minutes were that core.

Weaker units are to hold shit down as long as they can for the big boyz to do the smashing. But if they can't achieve good combat with another low-tier unit, they won't have a prayer holding for long against something scarier long enough to pay off.

Should they do fantastic, no, but they need to do their job better than the current state.

If a unit is unengaged in the late game it adds ton of flexibility to the engagement.

Also goblins are meant to die early on you have them as missile shields and then meat shields while you mix them in with black orcs so that the enemy targets the goblins and not the black orcs.

Eventually the goblins flee combat and the black orcs keep the fight together,

Now the goblins rally and are now free to harass the back lines and go for a rear charge.

If you don't understand how a routing and rally can be a good thing then you're not a master of strategy.

I wouldn't just use goblins, but I recognize their strengths.

You're going about it wrong. You want good unique units on land because you prefer land battles(what with TW titles history I completely get).

The Danes deal is they got these uber good naval infantry that you're supposed to sail around looting mad cash from the rich factions in the south that even if they're way bigger than you can't really retaliate to your raids cause you're so far away and isolated.

Take a couple artillery ships to take out towers, some bow ships to meme on the ai with their infinite ammo, and some melee ships to skullfuck the enemy garrison on land, and you can make some sweet money doing so.

The only problem is that your units will get brutalized by enemy garrison scout cav because of the impact damage meme

my cav got decimated fighting on rough terrain plus the arab cav weren't used to the unfamilar territory

all 300 of them routed with heavy casualties, had the remaining infantry (around 2200) hold firm against the rocks

My personal hope is it'll start around 1850. I know FoTS takes place around this time but I don't think the 'never seen before' is going to be that hard and fast of a rule for them. Especially considering that Shogun 2 is very narrow in focus and that the unknown historical title is going to be, according them, very ambitious in scope.

But 1850 - 1910 is really interesting time in world history.

There were only the army books of the main 15 factions.
No humans but Empire and Bretonnia had army books.

There was a Dogs of War supplement which featured mercenary units from Tilea and Estalia though. And I think Kislev has some really old rules from a supplement.
So lore footnote pretty much.

Kislev has the most chance of being playable by far.
Estalia have conquistadors in Lustria so they're next in importance.
Tilea is just mercenaries and Inquisitors.

Is Clan Angrund the best campaign if you love dwarves? I did a regular Thorgrim campaign, and it was fun and all. But Belegar and Angrund was fucking awesome. I was lurking here in the threads and got some sage advice: people here kept insisting on the genocide of elves.

Chaos can do whatever they want in the North, Angrund feels immune to that BS. As empire i was constantly worried about fortifying my shit for chaos invasions, dwarfs is isolationist to the extreme. Theres so many factions with all the DLC tho, i felt early game there were too many factions. Who else had a /funtimes/ with Angrund? Who should I play next? Have done Empire & Dwarves so far, have all DLC except for the mememen

Glad you're having fun. Angrund certainly feel unique and is a lot better than the base stunties.
I hate stunties so I can't really empathize though.

I'd say Bretonnia will be a cool campaign when they come out, but you need something to do inbetween then and now. And Bretonnia following Angrund is pretty West-centric.
So give VC or Greenskins a go to be on the East side of the map.
Greenskins roster is really fun, nothing is really broken and you generally have to actually think, especially compared to stunties.
VC are really strong right now and cool if you want to crank up the difficulty and steamroll.
Can also use that power to blitz up to Kislev early and be the frontline against Chaos, as you didn't interact with them in your last game.

Beastmen are surprisingly good on the campaign, their invisible encampment and offensive ambush are both really fun, and while their units are very samey, they're still satisfying to use.

Is it normal for Attila to die on his own? I assassinated him at least 5 times but that did nothing. I killed him in the field once, chased him around Europe and then he dies for no reason. He wasn't even the faction leader despite me assainating the F.L. multiple times.

Do you guys ever backstab your allies or trade partners in total war games? I know that it doesn't have too many consequences from a metagaming standpoint but from a roleplaying standpoint i usually try my hardest not do backstab anyone especially if the other faction is from the same culture or religion group as my faction.

Currently doing a Kingdom of Asturias playthrough, trying to be all chivalrous christian and shit. Signed a peace treaty and a non-aggression pact with one of the smaller muslim factions because i was being attacked simultaneously by 3 different factions. Few turns later things have stabilised and i'm now tempted to backstab them and quickly try and capture their undefended home province.
I know that they are dirty infidels but at the same time, "muh chivalry".

They will probably build something. I think I read somewhere that the AI has a limit on how much they can spend each turn(based on their total money).

I have noticed in Warhammer that if you give other factions money they will make new stacks. The thing is, they can't actually support these stacks in the long run so they will slowly desert.

Give factions money is useful when they are in a war against a superior force because their stacks will keep dying. By giving them money they will create new stacks really fast and send them into the grinder.

Giving money to Kislev worked pretty well for me. I kept their limping ass in the fight against chaos and they kept colonizing.

If the Edetani/Carthage take Massalia, I complete my economic victory - the only problem is that the ai so far has seemed incompetent at dealing with the roman expansion - I have probably given over 4million talents to the Edetani, yet they can never seem to advance past the 2 minor provinces in narbonesis. Carthage finally decided to accept a military alliance, which means all of the other necessary provinces are secured.

I would attack the romans myself, however you need 15 trade partners for an economic victory, and one of rome's allies, the hellenic league, is also one of my trade partners.

A lot of RoR are really good units that add a lot to them.

Sigmar's Sons and Tattersouls are good frontline anchors to build themed armies around or include generally. Silver Bullets are a critical anti-vamp tool in SP and MP. Terror-causing demis that can also crush characters.

Vamps got the Tithe tar pit, regenerating tanky grave guard, and the Claw of Nagash that such a good mortis engine with the aura slow added to the aura damage

Greenskin RoRs fall kind of flat aside from the really high end ones. Spider queen is a menace and if those killas get to your lines unscathed they grind anything to a pulp.

Dwarfs got the best set as a whole. Good low-tier with Dragonfire Pass Warriors, Ekrund Miners with multiple ammo on charges. And slow aura slayers, grumbling guard keeping everything fresh, and hammers that can dumpster any armored thing in the game.

I think they did a good job with them, albeit not having them does hurt you. Like some factions...

Its kind of complicated. While Morghur is the best lord option without question, I really hate his lord effect since minos are such a necessary tool for your army while chaos spawn while useful in low armor match ups aren't as versatile. Good starting location.

Khazrak starting is Estallia is ok but being so clustered in Bretonnia with the Wood Reich near by is kind of a pain but you do get to attack Athel Loren earlier.

Malagor I don't feel is good to start with. The location is interesting but as a lord he falls short since the nerf to lore of the Wild and wizard lords just haven't been figured out yet.

Wouldn't mid pic related at sometime, wouldn't know where to shove him though. Maybe in Ostermark to fuck them and the Vamps up a bit.

Despite the MIXED reviews on steam, I think most people find how they're doing it is fine. The FLC is actually higher quality.

It's my first TW game and I beat it once before on Easy with Chosokabe (though I didn't even win in the time limit either). I completely suck balls at this game but damn if it isn't fun anyway.

This playthrough I decided I'd give Normal a chance again, but give myself a break by starting as Date (one direction to expand, don't have to watch my back all the time). I allied with Hatakeyama and I spent 14 years trying to expand (they are taking the lion's share and I have to cross through like 4 allied provinces to get to an enemy, Uesugi and Ikko-Ikki are both crazy strong). Had 5 provinces at the end.. until I lost 2.

Thinking of just restarting and having fun on Easy. At least I get to enjoy the game and get somewhere.

My lels got struck by a tsunami. To be fair they have been great allies for most of my time. Now they just broke my trade aggreement and are losing ground FAST. Difficulty on the campaign map most effects how less willing the AI is to deal with you favourably, and an arbitrary public order penalty.
I do it because normal feels a bit too easy and for the cheevos.
There is secondarily a battle difficulty.
This defaults to the same setting you set campaign difficulty to, though can be changed(unless you're on Legendary).
DO NOTE that it is currently bugged either way, you can change the battle difficulty slider but the changes don't effect the campaign.
This is a bug with the current patch that damn well better be fixed.

Battle difficulty gives bonuses to all enemy units, some to melee attack and defence iirc, but primarily to leadership.

I usually turn this back down to normal because it kinda congeals most enemies together into a high-leadership blob.
Playing Chaos is annoying because suddenly everything is almost as elite(in morale) as chaos warriors.

Honestly the worst faction to play with higher battle difficulty for me was the VC.
You don't notice it for long, but in the start when you're fighting other VC around your starting location, you'll slap one unit of zombies against their one unit of zombies. And yours starts crumbling first because the AI is assigned a higher number.

VC basically want to just be the Empire.
Short term victory conditions are kill the Empire and own enough land while keeping Chaos out.
Long term adds the extermination of Bretonnia and the Stunties to that.

Fair warning with the vampires is that your economy is pretty weak. You're super reliant on your starting province's gold mind.
They're also one of the worst nations to fight Chaos and stunties with, roster-for-roster.
It doesn't matter too much but you can be blindsided really hard.

Well, I recently started a campaign as Vampire Counts and as you could believe, it has a lot of underarmored and undergunned fighting with dwarves, especially as they won the Badlands and confederated most other dwarfen empires.

Any sound tactics for VC against dwarves? I mostly use Grave Guard with Grave Horrors charge, with vargheist as air support flankers, making them fly above the frontline and then strike from behind.

Also, pic related: today my exhausted army of 700 undead lead by this vampire was attacked by almost 1200 dwarfs... Dead fought valiantly and without fear of death (as you could presume), but we never stood a chance, so soon it was just my leader vs more than 400 hundred dwarfs...

And he kicked their asses all by himself!

He had this fucking "common" sword which causes terror and this helped immensely, as dwarves constantly ran away few hundred meters, stopped and ran back to fight, so he fought at most a hundred at one time. Also he healed himself with that first vampire domain spell, and dwarven thunderers and quarerells didnt dare to shoot him, as he was constantly in the middle of a horde of angry (and fucking scared) dwarfs.

Also I have a question, as in-game pedia does not answer me in any sensible way... What does Black Chariot (and all it's variants) actually do? What's the difference between the variants?

dont have cav yet, building for them is fucking expensive, and VC have a lot of dangers from every side, so I had to spend lots of moneys just to defend myself.

My empire consists of Wissenland, Stirland, Averland and Sylvania of course - I'm barely able to hold on two flags (which is a must as one flag of undead is often not enough to take a city with upgraded garrison) and have just enough money to slowly upgrade cities, also I just conquered Altdorf and will colonize Reikland soon (it lies in ruins, and judging from the fucking totems everywhere it were Beastmen)

I don't know man, vargheits are one of my favourite VC units, they've been performing extremely well in all my campaigns, easily getting 150+ kills per unit, even against dorfs. They're fairly squishy but they are fast, have frenzy and their rear charge is absolutly brutal.

That does not mean they're shit. They fly, and that gives them unparalleled mobility, and they still have enough power to fuck up light cav, archers (they will absorb first volley, few will probably die, but the rest will fuck their day big time. They win in melee without any problems against quarerells, which are "good in melee") and infantry on the walls - and that last thing is something cavalry can't do, it can only sit on it's ass during siege and die to tower fire. That's exactly what vampire counts army needs and I prefer to use them over bats or dogs as mobile attack units.

Of course I will exchange them to terrorgheists as soon as I can, and I will have cavalry in my armies too, but when you cant have archers or artillery you need some other options and that's exactly what vargheists give you.

People don't understand that there are other ways a unit can be useful than being the most killy/toughest/fastest/meatshieldy.

Vargheists really do excel at the role they fill, which is quick, powerful flank attacks against blobs of engaged infantry.

Easy don't let them get to 2 turns to build up.

You march straight at them and recruit 3 units. And then you fight.

There are a few battles where you might be disadvantaged. But those close battles will be important to securing the province quickly.

Also learn how to use ambush stances in your own territory to ambush armies in favorable positions.

Turn 1, fight their starting army and retreat to your territory and recruit, alternatively if you can't make it back don't fight them just recruit swordsman
Turn 2 take the first town and recruit more swordsman
Turn 3 make your way to the second town and recruit more swordsman (bonus points if you recruit a few units of free company)
Turn 4 fight their stack and garrison and win

im curious, what were your formations and tactics used? your meelee got a good amount of kills, but you seem light on line infantry. im curious as to how you protected your quarrelers/artillery, since they got a shit ton of kills but didnt take many casualties themselves

i like learning what other players do and their tactics used

playing defensivley as dwarves is amazing if you can protect your flanks and then rock the quarreler volleys, but i find dwarves need large armies to be truly versetile enough but are powerful when arrayed properly

What annoys me the most about the lack of RoR for the DLC races is, they aren't hard to make at all. CA is 1000000% full of shit when they say it's either RoR or something else.

RoRs are just reskins of existing units with some unique stats. That's it. Nothing else, I was able to pump out a bunch of reskins for the Empire in an afternoon. Me, a retard amateur who wastes his life on a Malaysian Stop Motion website.

If you're playing on anything other than very hard I don't think it matters too much. On harder difficulties where enemy units get bonuses to all their stats as opposed to just morale buffs you need to invest in the Leadership tree.

Arguable. Being able to land on and instagib an enemy general is probably going to help you more than the unit bonuses. Empire already has pretty great units to beat all AI compositions.

I'm not so sure considering on legendary AI units get up to 15% bonus and +15 morale on top of that. I'd rather have my units being able to compete or outclass the AI's than having 15% weapon damage and/or 15% more hp.
Of course I don't mean investing all your points into Leadership skills but buffing your state troops is absolutely mandatory.

a faction unlocker will give you the Border Princes as a playable faction, Estalia and Tilea as well in similar fashion (all Empire-ish with some variants). I've always loved the Dogs of War/Tilea/Estalia/Border Princes and lamented their eventual "exclusion", much like Chaos Dwarfs.
