It really depends on how much back tracking you do, as main enemy fortresses on the map can constantly send enemy squads to come wipe you out. I'd say roughly 40-50 total, split semi-evenly between Alm and Celica. However, maps are usually small, enemy forces usually have around 10 units each, and there are very few obstacles in most maps.

Complex mechanics are not everything in a tactical game, the GBA titles make better use of the basics when compared to the 3DS titles and they also punish you less for your mistakes promoting an active tactical thinking. The fact that you can formulate a strategy prior to starting the map it's really important too. Personally i prefer FE3B2 to the GBA titles despite being an even more simplified title, all due to its use of the basics, map design, the ammount of options they give you in order to beat a map, secondary objectives and a couple of really great missions.

But I don't think it's the Avatar. Why would the Avatar only accompany Alm's party and not Celica's? Would you get to choose which Lord's party to be in? Also you control Celica during the dungeon sections. I'm pretty sure they're just adding new characters since Gaiden's cast was pretty small.

Because they aren't realistic. Soldiers and horsemen didn't use axes, and even in a no holds barred fantasy setting where they could it would just look stupid. It makes sense for only pirates and bandits and commonfolk to be the only axe users because axes are cheap and easy to make and it doesn't take much skill to swing around wildly with brute strength.
