Yes, it takes place after Tokyo was nuked, but before The Hero returns from the Diamond Realm. Both Thorman and Gouto are mentioned in the manual, and Emi references Steven in the beginning of the game, when she explains how to use a COMP. Also, Louis Cypher is in the game, but he doesn't have a very large role, which is a shame.

Holy christ do I hate the fact that skill slots for both the MC and demons are locked behind app points, which take forever to get.
Why did they think this was a good idea?
Not too big of a fan of MC not being able to equip passive skills either, but considering SMT1/2 MCs didn't have magic at all I'm at least somewhat okay with this.

It might not be the "best" in the series, but it's easily my favorite game.

It's maybe my most replayed of the current crop of 3DS Atlus titles, and I'm just so in love with the setting and music. Plus, the combat speed. Whew. Fantastic shit.

It wasn't a whole lot but they had some cute ideas with bosses summoning adds, supercharging them, or duo fights, or final phases going nuclear.

SMT4 bosses are all 1v1, and Apocalypse did a whiz-bang job with them considering how boring SMT4 was, but I think the next step is going to have to involve experimenting with multiple enemies in a boss fight.

Not that it's mandatory. Apocalypse I think still has room to grow.

Plus, TMS, not having press turn, meant you couldn't blitz any adds down instantly like you would in 4 or 4A, so it may just be the wrong idea for the wrong system.

Negative affinities for magic basically fulfills the same role as skill type-based inheritance restrictions except that it doesn't get in the way of chain fusions. It just discourages fusing demons with certain skills rather than forcing it. Which is why I consider it mostly redundant. I think if you have positive affinities +1 to +9 then you'd want to mirror it with negatives, so you'd want to be able to differentiate between negatives, instead of banning inheritance outright. Maybe it's fine to prevent skills passing on at -5 or -9 though.

I guess Atlus could balance it somehow, it just wouldn't have the feel of being unable to use only some fire or elec skills because you didn't have the right parts for it.

It's pretty neat too, as SMT4 goes on if you return after story events to Mikado and talk to NPCs there again, they'll make comments about how long you've been gone, or other Samurai talking about how much their children have grown even though they were only gone a few days. Or just big events happening off-screen between them, because you were actually gone for years (by the start of Apocalypse, 7 years have passed in Mikado since SMT4 started).

what is the best way to emulate SMT I and II with translations? sorry if newbie question I found the translation patches in the OP but which version of the games is best to emulate?

I saw a link to Kyuuyaku Megami Tensei in the pastebin prepatched so thats cool.

SMT I has the AGTP translation patch and Orden's bug fix patch. You want the bug fix because of just how buggy the translation was at first. SMT II only has the translation patch as far as I know, but it's much more functional. The only version of either of them to be patched are the SNES versions, though if you have an iPhone you can get an official version of SMT I. AGTP is Gideon, who was claiming to be nearly done with if... two years ago, he still isn't done.

I fucking did it.
I beat my blind run of Apocalypse on the Apocalypse difficulty setting. I did not buy any of the other DLC.
If the writing were better, this would be my favourite megaten game. Favourite combat easily anyway.

The boss fights were pretty fucking rad. Merkahbah - Lucifer back to back was a particular highlight.

Fuck no. Play the PS version, it's superior in every way. Some events have been fixed, the navigation is much better, and new content has been added (mainly new music in Akira's route). There's a guide on If in the OP to help you out.

That's what I was thinking. Jack Frost should not be able to learn Agidyne no matter what, the same way that Pixie should never be able to learn Earthquake, I think.

True, while at first I did try and minimize my use of the respawn feature, around Merkabah/Lucifer I did crack and started using the respawns.
As well as Apoc and Nocturne, I've played IV, SJ, DeSu Overclocked and Personas 3,4 and Q.

I'm happy to branch out to the older games.
