Well it's still not press turn, and I'd rather SMT stuck with that. But yeah, I think the next SMT could definitely benefit from picking a few ideas from P5, not just for combat, but the dungeons could learn from it too (saying SMT could benefit from looking at Persona's dungeons was a sentence I never thought I'd say, but here we are). Having Eiha/Kouha in addition to Mudo/Hama is a far better idea. The way it handles guns is interesting too, though I don't know if that'd fly with most SMT fans.

Some of the later dungeons have actual puzzles, and the third dungeon has a really well implemented gimmick (security cameras). The last dungeon feels like it was literally ripped straight out of Nocturne though in its appearance, music, and puzzles.

Hpw is that true for the DDS games, DeSu games, or IV games tho? DDS and IV games both have tons of wide open spaces, multi-level spaces, and distinct design to the corridors in each dungeon that makes each feel different. Just from the beggining of IV, compare the winding maze like nature of Naraku's corridors that have no sense to them, to the structured, interlocking corridors of Ueno where there's a way to get back to the start from every area. And DeSu doesn't even have dungeons.

There's not really anything to do in IV's dungeons besides run through them. DDS is more similar to Nocturne so I wouldn't lump that in here. But unlocking a few shortcuts doesn't mean there's anything particularly dungeon-y about a set path that you fight enemies on.

Naraku is the best dungeon in the game and it was a tutorial area, that's really damning for the entire game.

I think P5 looks nice as a Persona game, but its way too stylized for SMT. SMT needs cell shading, sure, but it has to be a lot less overblown. I think Nocturne had it perfect in that regard.

Both possibilities, using HP or using MP, would have lowered the use of Phys-based demons and MC builds to some extent, but it's better to have to draw from a limited number of uses for the move and then have to stop using the move until you recover instead of drawing from a limited number of uses for the move and then have to stop using the demon until you recover. Or worse, for games that aren't Apocalypse, have to go all the way back to your most recent save, at the very least restarting a boss fight, because your Physical protagonist got killed. Yeah, to the "true" hardcore that's part of the tactical challenge, but it doesn't exactly endear itself to the new players they wanted the IV series to bring in.

Humanity needs stories that fulfill this basic pattern, but differences in interpretation within the pattern can emerge creating new gods from old ones (hence Dagda somehow having once been the same god as Odin, and Danu having once been part of Inanna) or modifying old ones (all the ancient Near Eastern deities demonized after YHVH worship took over), and the modern secular version of this pattern more closely resembles the Thor of the movies than the Thor of the original myth. So having changes to existing gods start to sprout up as the world culture changes around them, in particular as the superheroes of the MCU start to get over outside America, isn't surprising.

Presentation matters. Branding matters. I don't even like Persona 4: Dancing All Night, a darker take on the careers and (if you'll forgive the pun) personas of idol singers, because it shouldn't be adjacent to Megaten. I like idols. Idols are cute, and their music tends to a kind of happy pop music that was sorely missing from the American pop scene last year. Subtitle those AKB48 game shows, and they can be fun. But it's not Megaten. I like Vocaloids too, but having a Miku Hatsune article on the Megami Tensei wiki feels like putting peanut butter in your macaroni & cheese: both are good, but they do not go together. This even before gameplay enters the equation. Hashtag FE is even worse, because it isn't even trying to look like it's taking a nuanced position. It's using idol singers and the culture surrounding them to pander to fanboys, and that's only not Megaten, that's not even interesting in a fictional context. I want that, I'll watch the actual idols. Add in the fact that the name of Fire Emblem outside of Japan itself has been tarnished by the Nintendo Treehouse's actions, making the game in a non-debilitated form inaccessible to anyone who can't speak moon or doesn't own a Japanese (or region-unlocked) WiiU. I'm even more against censorship than I am against pandering trash, so that provides more reason for me to not touch it.

Video games generally suffer from that problem, there are only a few games, if any, with "deep and complex" decision making. SMT games have a long common route and later on it branches into different endings, based on the decisions you make during the common route, I'd say even this is a success if you look at RPGs in general, your choices will actually lead to different endings.

We have 6 mainline titles. IV and IV: A have customization, to a degree, and you can see your character; I, II and SJ are first person dungeon crawlers. I don't see how this is a "proper" and "crucial" RPG element.

The random nature of random encounters always results in frustration and boredom to me once I've put enough hours into the game. While pre-emptive strikes don't really have that effect, but they have their own flaws too, especially since their movement AI is pretty shitty most of the time.

1st person for battles, there's something ridiculously cool about fighting enemies from a perspective of just facing across from them in a room. You can easily beat Scratch and all the Fiends (Who are easy as shit) with just dropping the difficulty for compendium. And since EVERY Fatlus game has had P2W DLC since SMT4 and EO2U, I don't think that's gonna stop. I'm surprised P5 doesn't have a "Three more blank weeks to fill out social links" DLC. (And I'd probably fucking buy that.)

Apocalypse difficulty is terrible though.

That said none of the other P2W DLC stuff was in any way mandatory for any of the other games it came out for.

Just beat it, good game desu. I didn't like it as much as the first one for the first few days but it started to pick up a bit after that.

Who did you side with? After much deliberation I ended up going with Ronaldo. I'm a lawfag so that one seemed like the closest to it. Wasn't an easy choice this time around though. I would have went with Daichi until they started talking about having to fight the others anyway, kind of hypocritical for his moral views. I didn't like how Ronaldo tried to kill Makoto on the 6th night, especially right after he supposedly "learned a lesson" when you stop him from attacking JP's and help the two agents who were about to be killed by demons. I was even tempted to go with Yamato but I didn't trust him to dictate the rules of the meritocracy because he was somewhat of a cold, stuck-up dick. I heard there's an Alcor route too but it never opened up for me.

Probably take a little break from MegaTen stuff now and go back to .hack, I'm on Outbreak now.

I looked it up online and went for the reset time and save everyone for maximum friendship ending. Ronaldo and Hotsuin were both retarded chuunis and their worldviews are retarded caricatures. Couldn't identify with either and given how friendship friendship the game was it seemed like the right choice was to go for a friendship ending.

Daichi's route ends with you killing Polaris. Alternate Daichi route is the reset time. Get everyone outside of team Daichi to rank 4 and you can recruit them all for the best version of that ending.

Alcor ending requires Alcor rank 4.

Yamato is an asshole, but I think you can trust him to abide by the meritocracy. If nothing else, he is honest.

That's true. I got him up to Fate level 4 on the last couple of days and he seemed like less of a dick after you start to get to know him more. I'd probably go with him if I did New Game+. Gonna have to read about what the Triangulum stuff is.
I wish I had the time to do NG+ in these games but there are so many time consuming RPGs out there it's hard to justify replaying one. Would love to NG+ Soul Hackers but I still have the rest of the .hack games, lots of MegaTen stuff to get through, and would like to get around to beating some of the FF games I never finished as a kid. Shit, I've had Disgaea 5 sitting on my shelf since release date and still haven't played it. Such is the life of a multi-generational idort.

To be honest, Fatlus RPGs run really long to expect you to replay them multiple times, especially with so little content actually being new and it all toward the end and very little good ways to skip. The opening of DeSu2 when you know the basics is glacial.

Triangulum is the extra story added into DeSu2 RB. If you start a NG+, you can go into that story. It's about half as long as the main game but everyone gets new personal events (DO FUMI'S) and there's more opportunities for friendship and demon slaying.

Everything is canon. Apocalypse happens if Nanashi accepts Dadga's offer. It starts right after Flynn fills the chalice in SMTIV.

If Nanashi declines Dadga's offer, then SMTIV neutral route happens.

If 4A is canon to 4, every single ending in 4 is a lie and a joke on Flynn and the players. Even more so than the usual Atlus trolling of players. It's an entirely different style of story to what 4 was trying to tell.

4A is a great game though. Best gameplay of the mainline franchise, hands down. And the story isn't inherently bad. But 4 just does not lead into 4A in any sensible manner except for setting up the initial parts.

By combining mechanics from various SMT games, Atlus could make for a really deep and complex battle system, and there are still many mechanics I haven't even mentioned (partners, alignment effects, trust meter, etc). I want both, preferrably. The advantage is that it gives variation. In Apocalypse, I have a Girimehkala with more than 1500 HP after doping, but his MP isn't all that good. He's a good candidate for HP-draining moves. It makes me sad to see people on Youtube having a full party of demons all having the exact same moves. Doesn't look very fun.

Hmm... If it's balanced right, that would be great. Stunlocking everything with Zio is a failure of game design though. Maybe it would only happen with a certain percentage chance, with certain factors (affinities if we keep them, passive abilities, possibly even lunar effect if we bring that back) increasing or decreasing the chance of it working.

That's what I'm thinking, a percentage range (10-30% for example) depending on affinity (if zio, both elec affinity and support affinity could play a role), moon phase and other factors. Otherwise, if they for some reason keep the smirk mechanic, drop magic attacks being able to crit and give them a chance of inflicting status instead.

I also want to see charge and concentrate nerfed. They're so good there's no reason not to use them in most cases. Either nerf damage boost or impose a limit

I think that'd make it too much EO. However, fusion should be somewhat nerfed. I'm not sure what the ideal fusion system be like, just not as liberal as in IV+Apocalypse. Akasha Arts costs around 30 MP, by having physical skills requiring HP, Akasha Arts wouldn't be viable on demons with high HP/low MP, and another physical skill would be better. I think that's one way of promoting variation in builds. Of course, there's always alternatives like Mist Rush/Hell Thrust, and I think including status effects on moves (which are affected by support affinity as well as physical affinity in the case of physical moves) is another way of promoting variation. Otherwise, I think less liberal fusion would help this, too, since you wouldn't always be able to push Akashi Arts onto a demon.

Multiple timelines. Neutral SMT4 Flynn got rid of the ceiling because Nanashi didn't accept Dagda's offer. But if Nanashi does accept Dagda's offer the whole timeline gets a lot more fucked up and way more people die.

jesus it really did. Kind of irritating that Giten has this bizarre reputation as just being a shitty eroguro spinoff and is dismissed by most of the fanbase. It has one of the most interesting versions of Tokyo, some excellent demon tie-ins and themes, and I really loved that it took more after Megami Tensei II than anything else.

100% personal and i kind of doubt anyone else felt similar, but its tone and atmosphere felt very fallout 1 and 2 to me as well.

Yes. Cyberpunk and Forced Battle was my jam, and Dark Road still gives me the creeps.

Giten overall is probably the most underrated Megaten. I wish they remade it with Press Turn, better visuals, and tied some loose ends, like what happened to tatsuya's body, did Sanshirou find Kyouko and was Marduk-Nishino freed from the Rabisu Sigil.

i looked into hacking it once and maybe grabbing someone to do translation work, but the files are a pain in the ass to navigate and text is decoded at runtime. i spent a while trying to alter strings and couldn't get anything going, nor could i find out how the hell its text table worked. i'm not the best hacker though, so maybe someone else could take a stab at it and make more headway?
