>>
>>165665357
What is wrong with torture so much? I mean it makes sense. We are playing a game based in a fucked up world. Torturing goblin spy's does not seem edgy compared to other shit in this game.

Also i got to say i have a king. Who mandated we make backpacks, than that we cannot export backpacks.
>>
>>165666258
>Torturing goblin spy's does not seem edgy compared to other shit in this game
it's utterly irreconcilable with dwarven ethics. dwarves in DF are literally lawful good at its most extreme.
>>
>>165666258
the thing is that bay12 is pretty weird in some stuff
You can bash a mother with the corpse of a baby and nobody bats an eye, but certain subjects will get bashed for various reasons
The fact that rubik talked about torture, and that the general consensus after him was positive towards adding the mechanic is a very good thing, because toady'll know that its a feature well seen by the community
RandomDragon had to step in the conversation and derail it
now he's bashing Toady again, because he didnt do what he wanted
>>
>>165666686
WTF.

Goblin sites are the only sites in the game that can't support farms (elf sites don't have farms in vanilla, but the plots they use to grow their trees can also be used for farms). I think that fact carries a pretty strong implication that gobbos aren't meant to eat. That, and the fact that they are the otherworldly servants of demons.

i guess i honestly dont care if they add torture, or if they dont. both work for me. Than again i just enjoyed the combat, and this new Detail system! I love it. I made a axe blade of gold and studded it with copper. And i told him to just make an image related to cyclops. And i got this. Pretty cool! my fellow dwarven trading brothers should pay me well for it! I mean think of it. You get sawed in half. And before you die you admire the beautiful copper image on the blade of a historical event!
>>
>>165667447
yeah man, but imagine a torture system with the same level of detail
Personally its both the fact that you cant control your strength, and the fact that you can't 'interact' with the people sorrounding you that makes me want torture added

Then all children get onto farming thanks to therapist, while all men get drafted to military, and women just get jobs that are needed in the fort, which usually is more fisherdorfs/fish cleaners/millers because fish&flour based diet is breddy good

There's not really any reason to run your fort like an armed camp after 34.11. With the new standing order system for the manager you don't even have to issue direct orders for most things anymore.

Given the philosophy they engage in, yes they are supposed to be as aware as anyone else, but much longer lived. Elves also possess immortality but no souls, making them worse than goblins.
>>
>>165708453
I wouldn't say akin, they just a have a thing or two more in common with golems than humans do. Goblins reproduce, they grow, they create a culture, they have individual personalities and goals as much as any other sentient creature, unlike any golems I've ever seen in fantasy.
Goblins' presumably supernatural origin doesn't really make them more like golems than any other creature; humans and dwarves and elves all poof into existence at the beginning of the world too, they're just not dependent on a specific brand of supernatural creature to do so. For all we know dwarves are created from the stone by their gods, or even by the same demons that goblins arise from. When the myth/magic arc releases we won't have to guess about it anymore. We'll have actual golems and creation myths and we'll be able to take a given world and decide just how similar any two supernatural creatures really are.

>>
>>165722757
I'm fairly sure it's explicitly denied. There are body attributes and soul attributes, and elves have both, same as humans, goblins, dwarves etc.
>>
>>165723217
I've been all up inside elf brains, the soul is just a game tag, it's why they are the only crapsack race that comes with gods you can't even pray to for a bit of extra focus.
>>
>>165723603
Oh really? Have you been all up inside of dwarf, human or goblin brains too? What do they have that elves don't have which you consider to be a soul?
>>
>>165722779
If you have a source handy for that I would like to see it. I know it isn't reasonable to expect anon to have annotated archives of everything Toady has ever said, so I won't hold it against you if you don't produce. I also won't take your word for it, though. There's nothing in the raws that would cause a goblin to ever touch a scrap of food, much less to eat ravenously, and no one to my knowledge has ever experienced them doing so in game. There's no way Toady doesn't know that, and I find it hard to believe that he thinks they behave differently in that regard.
>>
>>165723734
Dwarves don't have souls, they have beards, which are better.
>>
>>165723763
I don't have a source, and it's definitely possible that the years have warped my recollection slightly. It's entirely probable that it was a discussion of thematic intent rather than mechanical reality, which happens often enough.

Not sure whether the secret agents will be a player thing, but it would make sense on certain artifact quests. Fuck, I'm hyped.

I place my bets on a february release for the artifacts. The Myths will probably be delayed to the summer of 2018.

Btw, what happened to the Calendar? Is the Calendar-anon still here? I never posted any Felsite entry. Is there any deadline for this?
>>
>>165735475
for the past months, all the bay12 updates have been about agents, but i'm not really sure what they are.

i kind of assumed at first that they were only adventurer mode stuff, and i don't play adventurer so i didn't look into it but now it seems he's workign 100% on that.

can someone explain me quickly what the hell are the agents?

will they have any role in fortress mode?
>>
>>165737815
Toady has mentioned two different "professions" which require forged identities:

>Those used by thieves to infiltrate sites, in order to acquire information about artifacts, or simply to steal the artifacts.

>Agents used as proxies by gobbo civs in order to employ foreign artifact hunters to their aid.

The former category will affect fort mode, since we'll now have seemingly ordinary visitors who actually have their eyes set on our artifacts. The latter will mostly be for edgy adventurers who want to do quests for the gobbos.

Needs are determined by personalities. Your dwarf has a personality that makes him want to hang out with family, regardless of whether he actually has one.

It's not that weird, though. There are many fantasy stories in which orphaned characters wish they could see their parents again, and so on.

Dragonfire's temperature is the same as adamantine's boiling point: 50,000. Though apparently the dragonfire itself will burn away pretty quickly, before anything gets to that temperature. The wiki does say that repeated blasts of dragonfire can melt adamantine (25,000) though.

Disable whatever dfhack bullshit you have going on there, it's overwriting the vanilla display and is probably what was giving you problems in the first place.
>>
>>165757003
As I recall, buildings placed on top of designations which are set to never complete will never be built; the "don't actually do this" designation option applies to the whole tile, not just the designation. Which is why as soon as he allowed the channel to go through, he could place constructions.
>>
>toadyfag still doesnt let dorfs build diagonally
>>
>>165758319
He actually does, but the constructions need a floor tile in a cardinal direction. They don't have to stand on that floor tile when building, it just needs to be there.

I agree that it's weird. It's probably the biggest reason that many players avoid above ground construction projects.

Personally, I just make a two z-level deep hope and make a dump zone next to it, in order to just throw the stuff directly unto the hole. Two z-öevels are enough to hide the contents from anyone standing on the ground above.

The problem with that method is some retard brings his pet along for the dump job, kicks his pet into the hole, and then the pet gets stoned to death by peach pits.

I went out to bump into a roaming swordsman or whatnot and found one of the [LOCAL_BANDITRY] harrasser groups instead, but one of them was wounded right away for some reason.

What we know is, there are roaming soldiers who head around to different towns and such looking for work and excitement and maybe a drink. You can generally recruit them, they're usually well informed about the world, and if you had a few of them they would definitely be called an adventuring party.

I doubt they'd trigger the full "A vile force of drunks has arrived!" message, instead either an ambush thing or they'd just walk in as visitors and then you find them sneaking around in weird places in your fort.

The four compartments are (clockwise, starting at 12)

The main tower in the fort holds the residences of my baron, my queen and my liaision. The latter two residences are not in use yet, as I've yet to become the mountainhome.

In the middle of the tower, there is a large hole leading down to the rampcase that connects the "roof" of the original fort with the rest of the fort. In this rampcase, I've placed the barracks of my militia. This way, the hole can give them permanent exposure to the sun, and their position makes them able to aid any part of the fort quickly if needed.

Also, is there anything in dfhack's example init that I should disable if I'm not interested in cheating? Anything that's particularly buggy (I'm not using TWBT)?
Can I delete the lines for keybindings for things I don't want, or do I need to comment them out?
I really just want the UI improvements, bugfixes, cleaning and drybuckets. But there's a bunch of stuff whose purpose is unclear or simply unstated, and the documentation is useless for finding out what most of these things do.

Stone stockpiles default to one wheelbarrow each (which I find annoying) but wheelbarrows can be manually assigned to other stockpiles too, or unassigned from stone stockpiles. I've been using them for my metal stockpile, so I'm sure that it does work. Can DFhack scripts/plugins mess with worldgen? It seems like a lot of people would like to be able to set more complicated stopping conditions than just years + megabeast percentage.
For example: "run for 50 years, then run until at least one dwarven civ is at war with an elven civ, then stop"
>>
>>165788301
Nice textures bruh.
Don't remember the default, but you can easily check by opening d_init.txt. I usually cap at 100/125. Don't forget to cap visitors as well, and look at the cap for invaders to see if you like where it is.

I think the default is set to some FPS-murdering level like 200 or something.

If updated, it will update in your fortress as soon as you reload.

I usually have it at 30-40. It's enough to have a dwarf for every labor plus a small militia, but it's not high enough to trigger most attacks so I'll usually try to creep up to 145(Minimum for a monarch and all other population triggers) on successful forts. I usually die of FPS loss around 80 though.

Also keep in mind you can also change the visitor cap, so you won't have three times your fortress population milling around in your tavern because they seem to think idling for 3-4 years is "visiting". I don't think the visitor cap affects sieges, hopefully not but I could be wrong.
>>
>>165788565
Yes it is possible, I can even think of how to do it somewhat, I was pondering a script to create fake artifacts and insert them into the game at various points in world-gen.

Generally if it's a question of "check for x condition and y state" or "add x item y times in z state" you can do it with dfhack.
>>
>>165789297
Mostly I wasn't sure how much of the worldgen structures were mapped out and accessible. It seems like the DFhack team mostly focuses on fortress mode. But I'm gonna poke around a bit and see what I can find in the API.
>>
>>165788565
I don't know if it has the tools to detect that honestly. I think you can only retrieve that kind of information after the world is saved and can no longer generate more history.

Also apparently [ETHIC:EAT_SAPIENT_OTHER:ACCEPTABLE] and [ETHIC:SLAVERY:ACCEPTABLE] is not enough to trigger wars. I guess they're probably willing to overlook the fact that the lizardpeople capture, enslave and eat them because they share similar views on torture and making trophies out of sapient races or something.
>It's alright if he makes me work for him all day and then eats me for dinner, because he won't torture me or make rings out of my bones, because he'll just eat them instead!
>>
>>165789578
>I think you can only retrieve that kind of information after the world is saved and can no longer generate more history.
Well, the data must exist somewhere in memory during worldgen, since it's constantly being updated to record wars starting and ending. So if the structures are mapped out, then it should be possible to read them and interrupt worldgen once the condition is satisfied.
>>
>>165789541
Some of it isn't in place, it's hard to find lots of the unit bits to work on, but you can use open-legends force to see all the shit visible in legends mode, so naturally it would be possible to make a script check for those conditions.

It would need to locate mountain and forest entities, track their children, and check for war start events with both of those entities linked to them before sending the end signal.
>>
>>165790257
Well you obviously know more about this shit than me, so I'll trust you and mark it down as possible.
I just assumed DFHack's complete lack of interaction with worldgen was due to inability, not just because nobody had done anything yet.
>>
>>165788939
>>165788627
thanks.
i had dropped it to 20/30 last time i played, felt like a bigger fort now but i remember my first fort getting overloaded with immigrants and the fps dropping dramatically so i didn't want to use the default falue.

Run this script right before you start worldgen, and it will pause automatically once it detects a dwarven civ is involved in a multi-year war.

Around line 50, there are some parts you can tweak if you want to change what sorts of wars it looks for. For example, if you're using a custom civ, you can replace MOUNTAIN with the name of your custom entity.

My marksdwarves managed to kill the dragon, far too easily in my opinion, due to it being unable to breathe fire at anything more than one Z level above it. Anyway, I have a problem now: as you can see in my picture, the dragon's corpse is right next to the only wagon access point for my trade depot, and the human merchants just showed up with their delicious cargo of seafood and metals. Since I have as yet found no significant sources of ore or fish I'd very much like them to not be scared away by the fearsome visage of a vanquished beast. However, I don't think I can get it moved in time, since it weighs more than 6000 mangroves. Should I try to hastily build a wall to obstruct their view of it and if so will I need to put a floor on top to keep them from seeing it from above? Should I try building a butcher's shop right next to it and butchering it right there? My best butcher is merely adequate, and rusty.

I'm not sure if I have time for either of these before the merchants come into view, so I'm open to suggestions.
>>
>>165822917
Only corpses of sentient creatures scare people.

But yes, you should build a butcher shop there. It will take less time than dragging the dragon corpse back (to do that, you'd need to set up a temporary dump zone next to the buther shop, dump the corpse there and then unforbid it). It would be a waste to let the meat go to waste.

You know /dfg/ I bet if we pooled our money we could all travel somewhere and build a community of "dwarves", living in a fortress that we make on our own, and eke out a living as retarded df players, constantly laughing at game quotes we incessantly say to each other, and dig underground to dig tunnels and build caverns, where we will plant underground plants, and breed underground creatures, all while we create a small above ground tower with the mined out rock. We can raise yaks, and own cats, and every year we pretend we are getting attacked by goblins, which will just be some of us dressed up, and have these huge vomit-filled larp battles, where the "goblins" will be destroyed by our steel-clad warriors, while everyone else will either run around screaming, or sit in the tavern and drink themselves to death.

Because Dfhack has one in game already. The only difference is therapist tells you their attributes and what they would be "best" as.

Also how do you guys not have so many idle dwarfs? Shit my proficient dwarves tend to be too good for me to let rookies take over. So i tend to just make all migrants Engravers and smooth out my fort.

no the skin cannot be used. I use gui/create-item For that. Because i know if i kill an animal i want to use the skin. But because you cannot in game. I CHEAT to get the item. Of course if you do this you cannot equip the item you spawn untill you modify it by decorating it with bone, or studding it.

what's the point of aquifers?
are they only there just to add realism to the world generation?
they just seem like a chore to deal with at first, but when you're past them you can forget them or something.
>>
When I want to embark somewhere but the "embark" option is not available, does it mean caravans couldn't reach the site?

I know you can bypass it with dfhack but I don't really know the horrible consequences of doing so.
>>
>>165833078
Just like IRL, they can be used to dig wells on the surface. Not all embarks have other water sources.
>>
>>165833167
>>165833078
I dont know i guess im stupid, i can build millitary, i can build good fort that is self sustaining. But i just CANNOT fucking get through an aquifer. I tried that "plug" method. It never works for me. + i have to figure out where exactly the aquifer is and have 2 layers above it. I wish i could figure it out so i could have a waterfall in my fort and a i would make it go into my cavern to create a mini lake. But i just cannot fucking do it. Even with all the damn pictures and explanations, I always screw up one tile and it does not "plug" the aquifer.
>>
>>165833296
literally the same as me my man.
i kind of gave up on aquifers, but i like to have water flowing in my fort so i always build shitty reservoirs from the streams.
>>
Ok /dfg/, how do I rescue people? I've told a bunch of people "follow me to be rescued" and then lead them to a new place, but how do I tell them "you're safe now, settle down here?"
>>
>>165834385
You wait for the next version, he he he.
careful, dangerous half-knowledge: I've never done these quests, but IIRC I've read somewhere that you can talk with the relatives of the kids you rescued or introduce them in some way. In either case, I think there's no immediate effect to let you know that a quest was successful.

>retire fort, unretire adventurer
>go around to taverns, ask the warriorsto be a militia-dwarf for you.
>lead them back to your fort
>retire adventurer, unretire fort.

Also reminder not to retire forts when there are merchants there.
>>
>>165836275
at that point you might as well just use DFhack to insert some highly skilled dwarves - there's no difference in practice.

Even if it were, your method still costs you a lot of time, and if your time worth that little, you might as well just train your dwarves normally; I can't imagine this taking much more time.
>>
>>165836275
Oh so that's why I sometimes got the merchants bug and sometimes I didn't.

The first time I got that bug I burrowed the extra merchants in an underground bunker and opened up the hfs, so they'd be eaten.

Somehow the demons found a way into my fortress from there, and after a long battle with my legendary retired adventurer and the militia, they destroyed it completely.

Fuckin' merchants.

Booze is OP at the moment and pretty much will balance out all negative thoughts and they'll basically get used to most things before they get to the tantrum stage.

A tile is 3m high. You can grab things on the tile above you. That gives you a ~6m vertical range, which is pretty generous from the standpoint of realism. Anything more would be absurd except in a few cases of animalmen or night creatures.

It's been a long while since i played the game and am a bit out of the loop.
Picked an easy embark with a river, plenty of metals, soil and i believe some savagery.
What skills do you absolutely need to start out with? Miner, Bookkeeper, Farmer, Herbalist, Brewer, Cook, Fisher and Fish Cleaner, Wood Cutter, Mason and Carpenter come to mind.
>>

I specifically noted that there should be exceptions for some animalmen. Someday Toady will go through the creatures and differentiate their gaits and such, and the handful of creatures that ought to have a vertical reach that extends more than one tile will probably get it then. Until then it's fine as is.

For one, none of the leisure jobs takes an entire season. Two, only the purple jobs are uninterruptible, and they occur when a dwarf's needs have been neglected for a very long time. Three, they're a replacement for the previous on break/party system, which was a much larger arbitrary drain on fort productivity, guaranteed to periodically remove each dwarf from your labor force. Four, dwarves whose needs you satisfy receive a bonus to focus, improving the speed and quality of their work. Finally, five, if your fort was harmed by your manager taking a brief holiday, even if it had been for an entire season, it means that you're bad at the game, not that the game is bad.

the advantage of this is Ctrl - U
Ctrl U allows you to specify an mount of times to repeat a macro's playing. you can make a macro to dig out equally spaced bedrooms, another to furnish them all, and another to make them bedrooms.

Dammit, my hackery skills have failed some, I was able to make gm-editor pull up the nemesis entry (which gives access to the histfig AND unit entries, plus the adventurer flags) but it spits an irritatingly persistent error when used on a unit with no nemesis_id so I made the lookaround/flow option pull up the unit fields so I can edit animals and dummy npcs if need be, I'm sure there's a more elegant way to make it search for the nemesis_id field and fall back to regular unit editing but I can't figure it out atm.

http://pastebin.com/nUxPqDar

That's it in case anyone wants to fuck around with it, I've got it set up so it detects if you're in travel mode > pulls up your army position so you can zoop around the world (it's like 0/0 top left corner, then +48/+48 per world map tile over/down, gotta get a feel for it) and it has the unit editing option which should actually be better in fort mode since everything you get there should have a nemesis value last time I checked, unlike the dummy npcs in big towns.

Soon I'll post screens of my highly asymmetrical fort built fully on a single z-level running at a silky smooth 6 fps topped with those ugly-ass tiles.

>>165917017
I'm here to bring absolution to all the bullied tilefags.

So it's your very first artifact ever?
My current fortress has: a wooden blowgun, a bone bracelet, a wooden armor stand, and leather leggings. All except the blowgun were possessions, so no skill gain. If you think a weapon made from weapons grade material is even below par you're either extremely new or extremely spoiled, though I can't imagine how you could have become THAT spoiled.

As far as I'm aware the knife was undamaged beforehand. The clothes were heavily damaged beforehand. It seems to me that the knife was far too fragile. Also, what's up with it breaking twice?

Shittiness is relative.
A bone scepter is just a bad roll, and while it sucks it's not the worst kind of artifact. Usually, it's the best your fortress could support at the time, or at the very least the best the chosen dwarf could make.
Meanwhile this fucker gets himself possessed, specifically grabs the WORST QUALITY METAL AVAILABLE IN MY FORTRESS(He was initially going to grab pig iron, but luckily the bar he set his sights on was turned into steel first, so he went for one of the remaining 5 bars of iron instead) turns it into the WORST WEAPON TYPE AVAILABLE and then upgrades it with the LOWEST GRADE DECORATIONS AVAILABLE, opting for a basking shark and some fucking gems made out of llama wool.
He made a Summer Year1 tier artifact during Winter Year3.

I still think you're whining pathetically. A mace is not the worst weapon type available. The worst would probably be a maul or a scourge or something, I'm pretty sure those are available in moods, everything is, like when my bowyer made a blowgun. And you just said yourself that he almost picked pig iron instead of normal iron, so that's not the worst possible choice. You weren't saying anything about relative shittiness earlier, rather that it was the worst you had ever seen. I'd have been happy to have an iron mace instead of a bone bracelet. I really think you should be less melodramatic.

I'm stuck in a siege with no enemies to kill

I was invaded by some 3 necros with a bunch of undead, killed them all just fine, ended the siege, and then the game crashed.
When I came back, save was just before the siege. So the siege triggers, but this time it's only 1 necro and a lot less undead. I kill them all but the siege doesn't end, and now I'm permanently under siege with no enemies on the map.
What do
>>
>>165919253
Out of 7 artifacts in this fort so far, it's the least useful AND the least valuable.
The second lowest value artifact in my fort is a kaolinite mug, which totals in at just under double the mace's value.
The mace is shit by every possible definition.

That artifact mug won't work any better than one made out of, say, shale.

There's literally nothing wrong with an artifact iron mace.

Yeah, like 15k is needed to get a king. You'll get that much within a month, regardless of your artifacts.

And it also directly affects migrant waves and invaders, scaling with wealth indefinitely(Or until population cap for migrants)
>>
>>165920638
>invaders
Not in vanilla. In vanilla, the only thing that affects sieges is the populaton number. If it's 80 or higher, there will be gobs, and their numbers are not affected by wealth in any way.

Perhaps another necromancer hidden on the map somewhere, if you're not seeing them they probably don't pose too much of a threat.
