You acquire a kidney (left or right, doesn't matter), either by buying from a trader or harvesting from a prisoner or colonist. You then install the kidney in place of the lost one.

Surgery is still extremely RNG, so ensure that you have glitterwood meds, a hospital bed, and a decent doctor or you'll risk damaging the patient and losing the kidney.

If a surgery fails it'll add lots of wounds on the patient's body. This is only really a problem if the pawn was wounded to begin with, in which case you risk losing limbs. Technically there is a chance that you kill them outright from full health, or you damage their organs permanently, but it's pretty slight.

In my opinion, leaving a colonist with just one kidney is the bigger risk; your blood filtration is severely hampered, and if the pawn gets hit with a disease he'll have a really hard time accruing enough immunity to survive.

In DF you're doing things on a massive scale with lots of manpower fairly quickly. Everything in RW is just so small and slow. It doesn't have that snowball effect of DF where you just keep growing and growing and growing. In RW you go from "small colony" to "slightly bigger, slightly more advanced colony." I know that Rimworld is in alpha, beta, early access, whatever, but it still just feels kinda hollow sometimes.
I guess that's why we have mods, though.

You have to remember that "Alpha" means basically nothing nowadays and it's all about how long the developers want to support the game.

The game could get to A18 and then he could release it as "1.0" or some shit and people would accept it. Steam Early Access has lowered everyone's standards.

I'm sure we'll get more updates than that, but seeing how we still have the original terrible art style, I don't think the game is going to get much more advanced.

That's a very commendable goal. They're pretty expensive and rare though, and if you fuck up a surgery you lose the bionic.

The only downside I can think of is all the hits on the arm regardless of location get applied on the main arm, effectively reducing the hitpoints of the whole limb. But cases where you'd take enough damage to lose it are pretty rare.

Mostly just power. I wanted to wall off the two geysers and decided I didn't want any trees or anything in that area.

I'm actually considering just relocating my entire base up there though. With the cramped design of my base the infestations are a pain, and with raids getting larger the small area down there isn't going to cut it soon enough. It's already really bad if one of the raiders has explosives.

I'd also like to make things a little more automated. A bigger more self sufficient prison and a stronger line of turrets so I don't have to stop everything just for some weak tribals for starters.

When you tell them to hunt they individually pick targets and position themselves only considering the range to each target, so they get spread out. First you mine the exposed steel veins and then you look for the ones deep within the mountains.
Once you run out of that, you want to research deep-core mining and the ground-penetrating scanner.
Getting resources from underground is kinda dodgy, you have to decosntruct and rebuild the drill because it only mines adjacent tiles. Also when you deplete the veins close to your base, you have to build the drill further and further away from the safety of your colony.
You should also disassemble all fallen ship chunks.
Trading is more late-game, because steel on the map is finite but through trading it's infinite. Steel is expensive and silver is scarce so what I do is make money through growing/manufacturing drugs and furniture. Animals fetch a good price too, make sure you don't sell bonded pets though.
Slaves and harvested organs net you good money too, make sure you can handle the mood penalty.

Mechanoid and pirate raids bring you steel too, if you disassemble them or smelt their weapons.

How do I avoid "cramped interior"?
I usueally have small subuuildings with 2 tiles apart, most people sleep alone in 2x5 bedrooms, but I also have a few 3x5 bedrooms.
They eat together at a large table. Some things are connected with just 1 tile wide corridors.
I generally pursue a loose design with roofed couryards for stoorage, because it's easier to design on the flie and as needed

I had a married pair in my colony.

Anathema and Lojo. They were perfectly happy with each other to the point where Anathema rebuffed Saphona, her friend who was madly in love with her.

Raiders killed Lojo, gravely injured Saphona and then died themselves thanks to the rest of my tribe.

Now Saphonas body is full of scars, Anathema grieves her husband..

And there is a single unfinished item in the crafting spot - head wrap, present from Lojo to his father who has joined the tribe but had no warm clothing for winter.

It will never be finished.

rough rock walls have -1 beauty and if you build below a mountain you can get infestations that can be quite dangerous.

The advantage is that you don't need materials for the walls, can smooth the floor for alot of beauty, siege attacks are basically useless against you and it helps insulate your base.

They ought to be running out, don't you think? Modern ammo should be scarce on a rimworld outside of well established factions. CR adds an inventory system for carrying sidearms and automatic weapon swapping when out of ammo, yet almost never do you see raider carrying both gun and knife. And in CR unless you get into a long range shootout with hard cover on both sides, gun fights are really lethal and you rarely have to fire off more than 2 full magazines.

Here is my shitty "Town".

We are barely clinging on, the only natural thing we have eaten is Dark ones, which are fucking terrifying I'll tell ya what. People are constantly having breaks and if it wasn;t for extremely generous food drops we'd be dead by now.

We have just about got hydroponics up, but it's probably not enough to sustain us for long on it's own. Steel is harder and harder to find, and as winter approaches all it takes is one mental break in the freezing cold to lose a colonist or two...

Connect batteries to power cords through switches. If a battery is full, turn it off with the switch. Only reconnect it if you are short on power, drain it down to 90% as soon as you can.
Also you can simply uninstall full batteries and reinstall them later. To answer your question, uninstalled batteries keep their charge, so that's a good way to avoid losing ALL your power.

I had colony in its 4th year and there never was a Zzzt on the map because none of my batteries ever reached 100%.

Basebuilder mode triggers a few raids but they don't scale very well, most raids are 2-3 guys with clubs.
Just play on basebuilder or peaceful and spawn raids every two days through dev mode.

The rate at which they appear is determined by the storyteller.
However, they get stronger based on your colony's value. At a certain threshold tribal raids become pirate raids, pirate raids become 20-man tribal holochausts, then sieges, mechanoids, infestations, drop-pod sappers, shit gets more crazy the more bling you have.

Do roofs have any function other than protecting batteries and being part of the components (along with walls) for a complete indoor room? Is there any point of building an awning if I have a stone supply outside and a workshop next to it? Would it positively affect my colonist working at the stone cutting table? Or would sticking a roof over her have no effect at all?
