Because all decks have many board clears now and the one thing sword did well in, aggro, is being dominated by other decks.

Anything other than aggro sword is kinda shit since most of sword's cards are geared for it with high attack and low defense. Might as well try to make a ward heavy deck with storm cards to counter all the aggro heavy decks and see how that works out.

Make sure to have lots of finishers like Albert or Fangblade or else it just doesn't work.

How hard it is depends on the cards you open. I got lucky, all my free packs when I started gave me the things I needed to build a decent deck and start climbing. And when the expansion came, though my old deck became obsolete, I got lucky again and got most of the cards I needed to climb again. People also have ways to retry your starting packs until you get a set of good cards.

But in the end, the game gives you so many free resources that you can easily play for free and build your collection. You get free gold just for logging in, and enough quests that you should have enough gold to do one arena run per day at least.
