My first playthrough in sandbox as a normie norse dude fucking sucks.

Some quests give a lot more, particularly the "rescue a family member" one. Assuming you can pull it off, it gives alot of rep with the quest giver and the guy you rescue, as well as the rest of his family.. Just watch for the notifications for when somebody gets captured, and then ask a faction tavern keeper what work there is to find out who will send you the right direction.
Alternatively, when a fief is up for grabs, support the choice of the lord you want to claim. It's a tiny bonus with him and who he supports, but its practically free.

Man, as long as you don't use literal cheats, who give a shit if you start as a Lord? I would suggest, for any future VC games, that you go with "beginners recruitment" simply because that is normal, M&B style recruitment where you don't need to ask permission to recruit a bunch of weak peasants. You can still lose recruitment privileges, but that will only happen when you really piss off a Lord.

but i played a christian, and an easy way to get troops as a christfag is from churches
they're shit but it's more about fodder when you're starting so the enemy bandits are distracted and you can kill em
there's also mercs in taverns, some are pretty reasonable for their price (watchmen are generally cheap and effective, old captains are 1k per and almost invincible to low/mid tier troops due to how good they are)

I rarely see factions disappear, and if any does then it's almost always Swadia. On some saves Vaegirs steamroll Nords, on some Nords steamroll Vaegirs, but it's the first time faction other than Swadia got actually wiped off the map without my help.

That save was on 70ish day, on 80ish Vaegirs lost everything.
Yargolek invited me into faction when he lost 2 towns and 2 castles already. I tried to defend towns and castles, even survived 2 waves of nords attacking Curaw and Slezkh, but then brought so many soldiers and kept attacking I couldn't keep it. Every Vaegir lord has 10-40 soldiers max and they couldn't regroup because 3 fucking factions were raiding villages and chasing them around + 20-30 size sea raiders.
I even got spit roasted because I didn't want to pay for my freedom when they locked me up in Curaw I was trying to defend. If it was female char I wouldn't mind that much, but it wasn't.
