Dominions is a fantasy turn-based war game created by two dudes. One of them is a teacher.

The game combines a simple presentation with an extremely wide array of strategic options, including over 2800 units, 800 spells and 300 magic items. Turns are resolved simultaneously, with players planning battles rather than directly controlling them.

It has simplistic graphics but is easily moddable and extremely deep.

Basically, it's an autist’s wet dream of a war game.

Probably conj 1 first if you wanna git spooky. Otherwise thaum 1 for fear. Those are your fearst battle spells.

After that you can do more conj, ench for flaming arrows, some buffs in alt, the depends meme is strong with TC.

River Demons are rad with a big bless. Not garbage without it, but less impressive than, say, the green lions or water elementals that you get later in the game.

>>163342224
Lately on /domg/, summod + worthy heroes. Sometimes BetterArena is thrown in to make arena rewards better.

Not really. There's a mod (AI No Rec) that makes it so AI doesn't recruit indies and particularly garbage national units so their armies will be less random trash, but I don't believe any make the AI better or any such thing. I've seen some people also suggest making indie strength 0 so the AI can expand more easily (and you should be expanding easily anyways).

they're 1 hp ethereal things, but they're sacred. Their usefulness depends entirely on your bless. S9 = 2 hits to kill them. F9 = they can actually do damage. N9 or D9 = some sort of hp pool. This sort of thing makes them effective tar pits for holding up the enemy army.
>>
>>163343157
Ah, so W9 woudn't be that usefull for them right?
>>
>>163344213

Not particularly, although it will make them a bit harder to hit, so it'll improve their tarpityness a bit.

Hey guys. I'm going to be able to do this upcoming turn for Lucky13 before I leave, but I might not be able to do the subsequent turns within a day as I will be travelling. I will have internet and should have time to do my turns daily while vacationing, so I shouldn't need any extensions after this coming turn.

Should be subsequent turn* as in singular.

Depending on how long I spend waiting at the airport, it might be a nonissue entirely, but if I can't get the time to do my turn, then I also won't be able to ask for an extension, so I figure I should let y'all know now.

What magic paths would you recommend actually? I'm fairly new so I read in the forums and the wiki and saw fire and astral as top priority
>>
>>163369765
I'd take dom 4 or 5 and change the magic to blood or air for diversity
>>
>>163370313
S1 is generally about as much as you need desu. More is just overkill.
>>
>>163370313
Your national magi already have astral and fire. Blood items are good and being able to break into blood is useful for late game.
Air gives a good minor bless for Flamen or if you put Shrouds on your Augur Elders and allows you to craft air boosters.
>>
>>163370313
>fire top priority
Remember that man's name and never take his advice again.

In general if you take a rainbow chassis, you want it to be able to do stuff to extend your national path access.

Ermor has widespread access to astral, but it's relatively shallow and they lack the E/S crosspath, which is needed for crystal gear. Crystal Matrices are mandatory for putting your non-astral mages into communions. Ermor can use E2S2+ for crystal coins and shields. E2 also provides boots and subsequently hammers.

You native get only one point in water, earth, air, and nature on your national mages. This means that you can search for a wide variety paths, even if you lack deep access. Air is the hardest to build up from, and you don't have plentiful A2 mages, so I wouldn't bother with the A boosters (A4 required) unless you wanted to get staffs of elemental mastery which which are expensive. Nature is nice to boost if you have astral already, since N2+ opens up two boosters, letting you get up to n4 and then arbitrarily high with ivy kings to treelords.

Personally, the only paths I consider essential on your pretender are E/S because of the aforementioned crystal gear and, later, golems for magic phase moving thugs. If you want to take other paths, first decide which spells you want to cast or the items you want to forge, then use the magic booster guide to figure out the minimum paths needed to effectively boost to that level.
>>
>>163370403
Don't mislead noobs plz.
S1 makes you vulnerable to Magic Duel. 2 or 3 is safer.
>>
Asked this last thread but I don't think anyone replied
Is Fires From Afar worth anything? Or waste of gems?
>>
>>163370937
>2 or 3 is safer.
A little bit safer. If you want magic duel immunity, you need S7

>>163371380
Are you casting it twice on a small raiding party comprised of non-stealthy mages? Then it's good. Are you casting it on an army where it will injure 10 wolves? Waste of gems.
>>
>>163363117
WOLOLOLOLOLOLO
>>
>>163371490
Sorry, take off the non-stealthy thing. Fires hits stealthy units.
>>
>>163371490
I'm not sure what you mean, should I only use it when there are only valuable targets to hit in a province? So if I just shoot it on some army it's wasted because it will probably hit some worthless unit?
>>
>>163371684
Yeah. It hits a fairly small number of units and doesn't necessarily even kill human sized units if they've got enough armor.
>>
>>163371734
Maaan, fuck it then. I like the idea of the spell because it's cool but 10 gems is way too much for what it does
>>
>>163371490
Going for total immunity is overkill, there will always be vulnerabilities. S2 is a lot better than S1 as it tips the scales in your favor vs scrubby S1 magi.
>>
>>163372447
>>163371490
Also keep in mind, Magic Duel casters preferentially target lower S levels to begin with. If you have an S2 in with a bunch of S1s, the S2 isn't even going to be targeted until at least some of the S1s are already dead.
>>
>>163372539
No it doesn't. This was the common belief, but it was tested and two S1s targeted an S10 debug sensei when there were S1s on the field

Is there any reason to use an awoken pretender? It seems that early game you don't have the research to utilize his magic and the pretender is just like any other spell caster.

Am I missing something or do I just need to git gud?
>>
>>163375168
You use awake pretenders to smash through indies so you can grab more land. This leads to more gold early on, which can create further advantages. They can then be useful later on depending on what chassis you have, serving as ways to easily cast globals or other things.

I'd really rather not do full invasion right now as I am really behind on research and mage recruitment, but gotta keep my options open when I'm bordering the kind of guy who will sit an army on your border for ten turns, then attack the turn after you storm the fort and lose to get the quick win. Dangerously pro moves for a noob game!

Invulnerability acts as basic protection when you're not hit with a magical attack.

Basic protection will stack with armor, though it has decreasing returns (e.g. 20 basic protection plus 20 armor protection gives an overall protection of only 30, whereas 5 basic protection and 5 armor protection gives an overall protection of 10)

So invulnerability will stack with protection from armor, but not with basic protection.

>>163388043
>protection>20 doesn't stack linearly
It's occurs at all protection values, it just gets most noticeable when you have high protection.
>>
>>163389353
>Tell me of ONE thing you know for sure will last forever
The astral void ;^)

The fact that I can't prove that something lasts forever because of my finite perception doesn't mean that nothing lasts forever, so you invalidate your own argument. Perhaps the creature that lasts forever (like pantokrator) would name a few things. Like hangovers or something.

Well, think about it. The only way to verify whether something indeed does last forever is to monitor it forever. Good luck with that. You're just thinking in terms of 20-ish century pre-school philosophy. If we accept the logic of Dom4 world, there ARE creatures with different perceptions of time, and even existing outside of time itself like Horrors and some gods with blink/teleport.

Even on 21st century Earth your argument is wrong. First of all, the fact that out pereption and measurement devices are flawed doesn't necessarily mean that NOTHING lasts forever. You just proved that it's impossible to verify, so we're talking about epistemological side of the story, not ontological. The objective fact of something lasting/not lasting forever has nothing to do with our silly human thoughts about it. If we can't know it for sure, then any claim about something existing/not existing is pointless (which it is). I only asked about proofs of your own claim ("nothing lasts forever"), which you instantly invalidated on epistemological grounds.
>>
>>163390360

>>163389779
define forever. Reminder "time" is a human invention and not a worthy measurement of deciding what lasts "forever"

If the only thing you care about is the MR, yes.

Drain really isn't worth taking just for an extra MR (in your dominion only). The research penalty is a big deal, even if your researchers have high RP.
>>
>>163410258
Generally drain should be reserved for quadbless meme builds and nations with researchers that ignore drain
>>
>>163411637
Unless you or someone has a specific timing window for research benchmarks, I don't think research lead is as critical to victory as people claim.

>>
>>163411637
I agree, though nations which have high-RP researchers could probably get away with taking drain for a better bless or to let them have better income scales.

>>163411716
I think you're seriously underestimating research.

There are a lot of amazing spells at high research values, and getting those spells gives a large benefit over other nations.

Often just having better spells to cast can decide a battle.
>>
>>163412149
>amazing spells at high research
Should be trying to win before it gets to that point, anon.

I feel like if people are reaching lvl5 in w/e, it better be a 9+ person game or some halfway diplo rp game.

Having that much upkeep chilling in forts for extended periods of time is silly. They could be casting shit on battlefields instead. So learn whatever you can to deal with the threats at hand, and let late game happen when it happens. Hopefully having more material to work with than your possibly higher research opponent can contend with.

That's just my view of strategy anyway. 5 provinces is better than 2 provinces and lvl5 enchantment. Not withstanding some very very specific national rituals.
>>
>nazca (south west)
>ermor (centrally located and mostly surrounded by seas)
>mari (eastland butting against sceleria to the north and nazca to the southwest)
>sceleria (north)

Fairly balanced 'dangers of undeath' game? Would one one clearly dominate everyone else strategy aside? I like the feeling of a themed game.

>nazca venerate the dead
>sceleria command the dead
>emor are the dead
>mari rejects the dead
>>
How come some character actions require them to have gems while other actions require the gems to be in the large pool?
>>
>>163413071
If it's cast in battle, it requires them to be holding the material.

If it's cast in ritual, they need access to the treasury.
>>
>>163412349
Most nations are literally worthless pre lv-5 research, and I'd argue it's literally impossible to win a game without reaching at least 5 in one school, outside of very small blitzes (even then, the winner of every blitz larger than 1v1 has ALWAYS hit at least one 5).

For PBEMs, I've only ever been in one where the winner (me) didn't have at least a single 7 (I instead had 6s in most things). And that was only a 6 player game.

Especially considering that it isn't too difficult to hit level 5 enchantment early year 2 . . . I'm assuming you haven't actually won a game against people who match favorably to the AIs.
>>
>>163412349
My argument would be, again, that you're underestimating the effects of research.

There are a lot of higher-research strategies which can beat many, many times their cost in lower-research enemies.

SCs are the most apparent example (will beat a near infinite number of enemy troops until you research a counter), but spells like Rain of Stones, Firestorm, Fog Warriors, Army of Gold, Foul Vapors and such can allow an army to beat enemies which are many times more numerous than them.

Rain of Stones instantly kills most enemy mage support (and troops, if they're not armored enough). Fire storm kills everything without fire resist and armor, often quickly. Fog Warriors and/or Army of Gold make your troops nearly impossible to hurt, often letting them take dozens of hits each before being brought down.

There are counters to most of these, but those counters require high research (often higher than the spell you want to counter). If you don't have the research to use the counter, you basically need to avoid large fights, which lets your opponent take your land basically unopposed.

Another reason why you don't always want to deploy every mage is because sometimes they're not all needed. 50 skellyspammers has the same effect 100 has - either they get countered and lose or they drown the enemy in undead and win.

I think the strongest piece of evidence against your view is that games just don't happen like that. People just don't get to one research goal and then stop researching to move all their mages into the field.

If you think that's bad play, you're welcome to join games and stomp us with your innovative strategy.

>>163413121

>>163433772
You can argue that sometimes the lack of S1-2 can be their saving grace against DUELOS DE MAGOS, but consider what their paths give them. F2 for phoenix pyre/fire spell spam/right of the bat king of banefires; W1 for, uhh, frozen heart, I guess; S2 for astral stuff; D4 for ez skelespam/darkness/rigor mortis; D/A for Wind of Death/Wailing Winds. And don't forget, ALL dusk elders can cast bane fire, the uncounterable spell that annihilates a square, right of the bat. I never ever summoned spectators, and I won like 6-7 games as Ermor. Food for thought.
>>

>>
>>163433203
Because whether or not spectators are worth, ermor doesn't need a buff.

It's a bit like arguing xibalba has some unused troops, so those should be buffed.
>>
If you need a couple mages that will spend the rest of the game summoning lictors, Spectators are more efficient than Dusk Elders. If you are using Dusk Elders for that instead, you are wasting gems.
>>
>>163434452

Except those two Dusk Elders could be useful in a pinch, whereas the Spectators are completely useless aside from that one task.
>>
>>163434452
You can summon lictors with archbishops for free. Archbishops cost 23 gems, so on 24th turn of summoning you start getting free lictors. To summon lictors with spectators + black laurels you need 20 gems (well, 18 if you have dorf hammer) + 1 death gem per lictor. It's easy to see that archbishops are really good in the long run, but black laurels are good if you want faster summoning.
>>
Speaking of plant people apparently vine men used to have a huge kingdom. Might be something for that guy who was talking about a pre-EA mod to think about.

>>
>>163443902
The most obvious benefit is provinces gravitating towards the scales you selected in the beginning of the game.
It's +1 morale boost or -1 malus for fighting in friendly or hostile dominion respectively.
Immortal units revive at your capital if they die inside friendly dominion.
There are some units that summon additional troops in friendly dominion.
There are some special dominion effects (such as Miasma for MA C'tis or golem health bonus for Agartha).
Many globals work in friendly dominion (such as Vengeful Water, Gift of Health and Strands of Arcane Power).
Some events are affected by dominion.
You don't lose outright if you have at least one candle somewhere.

Probably some other effects but those are the ones I could think of right off the bat.

Is it encouraged to search for magical sites across your realm with your pretender?
Also, I'd assume that giving your mages extra paths using gems is essential, is this true?
>>
>>163452621

In answer to question one, it depends. For certain classes of pretender (those with paths your nation doesn't natively have access to) it can be necessary, if not encouraged. Otherwise, there are generally better things for your pretender to be doing.

In answer to question two, the only magic path you should consider empowering on a regular basis is Blood, because Slaves are considerably easier to get your hands on than Gems. For other paths, it should be done only extremely rarely. For example if your nation doesn't have Earth, and you are using E1 indies, it might be acceptable to empower one to E2, so you can make Earth Boots and from there summon Trolls.

See:

>>163455545
It's in the manual as follows:

A raid is a move that can only be performed by a commander with the Pillage ability if all of the units under his command also have this ability. The force under his command can raid an adjacent province, killing population, causing unrest, and gaining gold. It is essentially the same as the Pillage order except it is performed from an adjacent province. The raiding force returns to its starting province after the raid.

Raiders may be discovered by province defense or patrollers. A limited combat is initiated if the raiders are caught. In this case it will be a battle between PD + patrollers and raiders. Winning the battle will not conquer the province and there will be no pillaging done that turn regardless of outcome.

So because you caught him with your patrollers he didn't get to pillage.

it should benoted to the yomi player that raiding is pretty useless as pillaging doesn't really net much gold or do much economic damage.

Also note that pillage bonus is actually a flat bonus, the advantage you get from pillage skill 1 and pillage skill 50 is the same, unless I missed some patching they did to fix the value

>>
>>163458831
Question: Now it says it will only attack patrollling units, if it clears the PD will it stay gone?

Additional question: Let's say you're dealing with an enemy that has a bunch of unforted mages, for whatever reason (blood hunting, fort build in progress, etc.), and they're sitting on a border with an army. If the enemy had the mages researching and the army patrolling would, pillaging allow you to attack the army and ignore the mages since they were researching/blood hunting?
>>
>>163459747
It's fairly common to get a big guy or two from normal crossbreeding casts.

They're relatively rare compared to the normal guys. You usually get a big guy per 15-20 foul spawn.
>>
This fucking modding manual is basically useless for telling you how to mod spells.
>>
>>163456793
The preference is something like:

Holy Spells > Buffs > Battle Summons > Evocations

First they make sure everyone is topped up with bless and sermon of courage, then cast a few buff spells, then whatever puts the most creatures on the battlefield. Though some summons are rated more highly. If they have gems they'll summon elementals as soon as possible and death mages with reliably cast Horde of Skeletons (or Raise Dead if there are enough corpses) with only one or two deviations.
>>
>>163460052
Just crib off other people's mods.
>>
>>163462369

A few more magic related questions:
- How viable is it to use communion spells to use the stronger combat spells?

- Is enchantment 8 and evocation 7 a viable thing to focus up to in order to get fire fend and fire storm?
>>
>>163463362
>- How viable is it to use communion spells to use the stronger combat spells?
It's somewhat viable.

A lot of the stronger combat spells you want to cast turn 1, but you can use a crystal matrix to deal with that issue.

Usually by the time you have stronger spells to cast you can get a mage which doesn't need a communion to cast them.

>- Is enchantment 8 and evocation 7 a viable thing to focus up to in order to get fire fend and fire storm?
You'd need a strong research lead, since your opponent only needs enchantment 8 (or alteration 8 with water magic, or alteration 9 with earth magic) to bring their own counter.

If you want to use fire storm, it's usually best to rush evo7 then bring an army which is resistant to fire storm. It doesn't need to be a strong army, because you can fight defensively and let firestorm kill every enemy unit.

>>
>>163464662
Soulstone of the wolves is one of my favorites. It lets you spawn a group of werewolves and wolves every turn, for free. You can even use them as a remote attack.

Flying ship can be fun, it's like sailing but lets you fly instead.

Booster artifacts are boring but strong. The First Anvil in particular can really help with forging things.

Stone Sword (area petrify weapon) and The Aegis (petrifies attackers) are fun SC equipment.

A Golem with Horror Harmonica and Armor of Virtue is a fun combination someone recently discovered. It's nearly impossible to kill, so you can repeatedly teleport it onto enemies and summon a bunch of horrors.

There's a bunch of gem producing items, which are also boring but good.
>>
Does Phoenix Power increase the fire path temporally? or does it just give you a bonus to damage from your fire spells?
>>
>>163468107

No, it temporarily increases your fire path by one.

As with all path boosting spells, it increases the path the mage casts it with. Some spells increase damage or other effects based on path(see the + next to stuff like duration, target, damage). But most importantly gaining an additional path in something makes the spell costs less fatigue(50% less per extra level in a path), and of course allows you to cast higher path spells.
>>
>>163468495

>(50% less per extra level in a path), and of course allows you to cast higher path spells.

no.
One level above the spell min. level reduces it to 50% of fatigue.
Two levels above reduces it to 33%.
Three levels above reduces it to 25%
And so on.

So, /domg/, I found something interesting in the inspector and I'm hoping you can explain it.

From what I've been told, rarity 6 sites are supposed to be for events. You can see that with the middle site, necromancer's lair, which has a linked event code under [newsiteevents].

However, the top and bottom sites do not have any linked event codes, and I cannot find any events in the event list which mention them.

Are these actual sites which need level 6 sitesearching?

Someone in steamchat suggested they come from story events, and that story events are not shown in the inspector. Does anyone know if that's true or not?

This sort of sekretif shit honestly doesn't matter in virtually every case. >>
>>163476397
It's not a big deal.

Unless there are two people fighting you at once, you should have new research, units, and strategies by the time you fight the next guy. An old battle report would be outdated info and basically worthless.

If there does happen to be two people fighting you at once, they're likely talking with each other and will notify the other about any important info regardless of whether or not it's posted in the thread.

Additionally, most strategies fall into one of two categories. They're either only good for one fight (and become worthless once your opponent knows they're coming), or they are still good even if your opponent knows they're coming. In either case, displaying the results wouldn't have much effect.

>>163476768
Or they had a scout on the province and weren't involved in the fight at all. Most battle reports I've seen have come from scouts.

Ginnungagap ended as we knew it must. GG folks.

For summod+ME games, there needs to be a merger mod of some sort, because some of the stacked changes led to pretty nutty stuff. Therodos's sacreds with summod's buffs and ME's buff spells are insanely imbalanced.

Tarrasques are summoned as ready made SCs, and ME means that it's nonunique and has buff paths, which means that any nature-capable nation can churn out numerous 35% regenerating resist-everything, quickened, reinvigorating dragons.

For ME specific stuff, Nether Things were pretty amazing for R'lyeh because they let it use pearls as an alternative for water gems for raiding, and they perform more reliably against most PD. They also let you use tons of claims.

The land-only R'lyeh summons seemed good. It's hard to tell how much of it was the units and how much was the mage support, though, since I never had a chance to deploy them against another player other than Hinnom. While Fomoria had craploads of stuff, it was still an AI which meant no attempt at countering them. That said, they seem like Lamias-but-better, which is pretty good for how early they are available in research. Lower attack density, but WAY higher HP and natural prot and stuff.

Enslavement is really good. Like, really good. It has more competition for scripting slots, but it's still amazingly strong.

A lot of the 9-path battlefield wide spells struck me as completely useless. A W9 caster can slam out living waters or niefel flames. He doesn't care about making everyone slightly chilly.
>>
>>163488142
Riley's on a roll this year.
>>
If two armies of different factions attack a indie, who fights first?
>>
Uh, what else.

Oh, the land-mage spells + World Domination were pretty weak. Pearls are more important than ever for R'lyeh, so spending them on weak, random mages seems inefficient. The only thing that these spells could be good for is breaking into blood, but it's such a huge expenditure for that. R'lyeh's gold capped enough that I might not even want to recruit the enslaved mages even if I didn't need to burn pearls on keeping up the global (except, as mentioned, as a means of getting bloodhunters maybe).

Idols of Sorcery are really cool. Like, REALLY cool. You can make soul-draining superweapons with them, but they're by no means invulnerable (I'd go so far as to say that they're fairly straightforward to counter with smashers and so on), but an unprepared army is going to be drained and enslaved by their dark geometry. The other immobiles, by comparison, are vastly inferior just on account of not being able to terrorport.

Blasphemy is SOME BULLSHIT and the very existence of this spell means that major blood nations MUST be removed. Blood sacrificing is already strong, and blood globals are infamously impossible to take down outside of meme games where you have over 1000 pearls and have already removed most of the world's population.

I think it'd be cool if ME or Summod included more stuff that explicitly hurt blood magic late-game. Buff Furies 2017

Yes, raiding only makes you fight their PD and patrollers. This can sometimes be useful. You can even raid indies to drive up unrest and get some free gold, though it's dumb in the long run because it also kills pop that you probably want someday.

And my two cents on some of the ME spells.

Rain of Gemstones felt underwhelming. Generally you'd get 10-15~ gems on average per turn and some 150-300 gold from a "diamond". However it increases unrest like a bitch and makes the population leave in those provinces. There were many other things I'd rather use air gems on, but if you had bad luck with sitesearching then I'd guess I'd be worth a try.

Early game I thought I could steamroll with Taloses. Didn't work like that, they got surrounded by manlets and had their knees broken. And the only way to heal is with laboratories, which you don't have a lot of those during the expansion phase, meaning more time wasted going back and forth.

Mechanical Icharids however was a great spell early and mid, with a pretender boosted up to 9 or 10 earth I was dishing out 30 of those flying bad boys per turn.

Mithar's workshop was also a good cast, free item and units every turn and you can even get shit like Robe of the Magi.

Thanks for the feedback. I was already aware of the Tarrasque issue and if you check Llamaserver I did upload a "summod compatible" version of ME 1.2 with a few things like the Tarrasque changes removed.

The land mage summons and World Domination were to give the Aboleths a way to get airbreathing mages. Did you not find this necessary, were the Water Bubbles cheap enough that you could move Aboleths on land when needed?

Regarding late game Blood I had considered adding a 'Reverse Blasphemy' that creates assassinations on Blood mages and Bloodhunters. Also maybe something for reanimating nations. I have added a few more demon-specific counters to the latest version of ME as the existing ones all seem pretty lackluster.

The 9-path spells have been called out as weak and are getting a boost. I was a little cautious with them as I didn't want it to just be "cast spell, win battle". But then again, Master Enslave is a thing, so...

>>163508097
Thanks for the summary. Good to know Talos aren't as unkillable as some had suggested. Rain of Gemstones might get a tweak, one oddity is the gem gain is static but the unrest events scale with your provinces, so it is actually worse to cast for a large nation. I might take a look at that.

Between bubbles and blessing of limne, I had no trouble getting fish onto land. That said, Slave Mages are usable too, and are much bigger mages than the airbreathers. Aboleths are very strong mages, especially with ME spells, and also have high HP. I found it worth the gems to bring them onto land, but even if I couldn't, I'd have just used slave mages.

Well the spell modding documentation is a little vague so a lot of it was trial and error. Mostly it was reading through the various data dumps to see things like what spell effects were possible and how the vanilla spells worked. Then testing to see if things actually worked.

>>163513808
Maybe I'll look at the airbreather mages again. I figured the chance of any path and being available inland was worth having low paths for their cost, but perhaps I was a little harsh.

The dispel needed is actually just 30 + the overcast of their spell.

It's a prolife cartoon.

Freedom of choice generally refers to abortion, though sometimes to the general liberal policy set relating to bodily autonomy (thereby encompassing sexual freedom and euthenasia.). You'll notice the GOP in that picture are sheltering children and babies.

Stem Cell Research is opposed by the same pro life set, because fetal stem cells are a common source of research material, and they see that as destroying babies for research. A lot of people have forgotten, but W did a lot of damage to us medical research by banning fetal stem cell research.

The prolife opposition to Euthenasia should be self evident.

Actually I believe you only need to spend gems to beat the overcast, your base 30 will match the 75 needed for Wails of the Damned.

Rather than empowering as LA Abysia you should be able to recruit Warlocks with a chance of S3 from your cap. Alternatively casting Abyssal Gate will provide an S3 caster.
>>
>>163521375
Yeah it's around 5 or 10 gems per additional level if I recall correctly.

Most of those spells are high level already though so it's hard to get a noteworthy bonus, but I guess every gem counts.

Welp, I finished up the sprites and made a rough go at the stats. I couldn't be arsed right now to try and figure out where to put the spells right now so I just threw them all in at the start and made them cost 1 N gem. Still a few more things to add in like the pretenders and a few descriptions but for now I'm going to fuck off and play some final fantasy.

How high does your fire resistance modifier have to be to become basically nearly immune to fire without needing any buffs?
>>
>>163534713
15 is usually enough for anything that isn't PIllars of fire or dragon fire
>>
>>163534713
With fire resist 15 you're immune to almost everything besides the strongest spells like immolation and pillar of fire, and you can compensate with protection (fire damage is only armor piercing, so half of it applies). 25 is immune to everything period.
>>
>>163534713
Pillar of Fire is 34++ damage so that'd require a lot of resistance to negate. About 15-20 would be enough against all the more standard fire spells. It's also worth noting that fire damage tends to be AP so 20 protection for example more or less negates the HP damage portion of stuff like Fire Storm (and I think resistance is counted twice for fatigue damage so 5FR is already a strong protection against fatigue).

I'm trying out Caelum, should I put my armies in some specific formation? Since they are flying, I assume putting them in double line like I do with walking units would be useless, as they just go immeditely in melee.
>>
>>163541839
I don't remember the specifics but putting them in line formation (with no "attack x" order?) actually makes them walk, which might be useful because caelians besides Raven Guards of LA don't really stand toe-to-toe with most troops while their mages have supreme firepower and you want to delay your front line evaporating for as long as possible.
>>
>>163541839
Line formation prevents flying.
Formations for fliers are pretty much only defensive. Consider a line a ways in front of your mages to act as blockers if need be and catch any arrows.
You'll also probably want to position your units in such a way that the commanders are surrounded by friendly fliers on "hold and attack" orders, to keep them safe from enemy fliers.

>>163543414
Just ethereal elementals passing through walls and wrecking shit troops with AoE attack. And line formation. LINE FORMATION.
>>
>>163542657
EA/MA Caelum have two main battlefield tactics. Air Elementals and Thunder Strike. Both involve your big mages casting Storm and then A2s casting Stormpower->Elementals/Thunder Strike en masse. One mage should also cast Wind Guide. There are some other things A2s can do situationally (like False Horror) but generally speaking that's what 90% of your mages are doing all day long and your battle tactics change primarily through big mages getting access to various new tools (be it Eagle Kings getting Fog Warriors or your national summons casting pretty much any spell).

>>163543241
No

Line Formation Bats

Flying troops don't fly when you put them in line formation
>>
>>163543883
I found out that Caelum's national hero with F3A3 or something can craft magic lamp and summon a genie, which basically gives access to F/E/S and national astral summons. May be worth rushing const 8 in some cases. I dunno if it's from worthy heroes or not.
>>
>>163544001
>>163543570
>>163543414
I know that it was the line formation that made them not fly, but the fire elementals are what killed them. Therefore, mage support
>>
>>163544043
Rushing const 8 for a hero you MAY get is never an option. Instead the go to strategy is usually designing a scales pretender that can alsosummon the daevas which the EA/MA lack access to. It doesn't hurt that one of the daevas is also capable of summoning all the yazad types as well
>>
>>163544273
You can rush const 8 WHEN you get him, which I did, and it worked.
>>
>>163544335
define rush, unless your already in late game it's not a rush RP wise. The virtue of magic lamp is that it's such an ackward path for forging most people can't get it.

As MA Pelagia, I'm having issues fighting Ulm with their Iron Blizzard. I'm not getting enough resources to field troops, though I'm certain my research is much better. I'm starting to hoard a big group of green lions, but was curious how good rain of stones or acid storm would be? They're big equipment investments, and I'm unsure how to utilize them - while still keeping the mage, or part of the army, or whatnot. Any help is appreciated.
>>
Hey I just got a hero in the Natgen game, that's pretty cool. A shame it has no description but alas.
>>
>>163588090
>>163588090
acid storm helps a lot since it breaks their armor. Green Lions' breath attacks have the same effect.

MA Pelagia's land battles are best augmented with summoned elementals, but Ulm's evo does kill them very quickly. Green Lions are also magic beings, so they will similarly get destroyed. Luckily, Arrow Fend is effective against Iron Blizzard, since the spell's effect is creating a bunch of magic projectiles that still count as arrows. You can use that as an answer. Ulm will most likely also deploy other evocation, though, Magma Eruption being chief among them. As a result, you will probably want evo-lures in order to draw the enemy spells to keep your valuable mages and green lions alive. Vine Ogres work great for this, since they have a lot of HP for how cheap they are to summon.

Rain of Stones is difficult to use effectively against MA Ulm even if they have a large number of mages because they naturally come with a bit of armor. Acid Storm will work much better (at least until they cast Ironskin or the like)

I'm working on a Valanis ripoff with a focus on more equalized map design, but it's been a while since I've played and I'm looking for input on some of the specifics before I continue.

Current design is 12 land nations and 3 water ones, with each land nation having 3 natural borders with other nations and 5 provinces touching their capital. Black dots on the map represent capitals, with an extra unmarked one shoved up in the top left. Nations that look like they only have two borders will have a path to some floating islands up top where they'll get their third neighbor.

Looking for input on things like number of provinces per player, swamp / forest / mountains / farms density, terrain clustering y/n, travel distance to nearest capital, and anything else I might have missed.

15/player is p standard. Generally you want slightly fewer than that number for W provinces, because W nations tend to like coasts too now.

Try to avoid terrain clustering. Don't stack ridiculous amounts of terrain like urraparand does. If you make every other province a mountain or forest then you really mess with non-flying nations.

Dwarves, leave the lands of Tzeentch and Chaos. Only warning.

Smaller map = more decided by wars, less decided by who quits due to micro first.

This is something domg has yet to learn.

this
>>
>>163594492
But I hvae more fun in games with 15-20 provinces each one, expanding nicely and fighting a neighbour, then maybe fight another, then on turn 80 it probably gets boring, instead of having to fight someone on turn 8 because tight map.

Most people play Need for Speed instead of actually getting into the local street racing scene, too.

Just a #PureSkill thing, I guess.

How many provinces between capitals? It's hard to have more than 3-4 provinces between them at 5 provinces per cap ring and only 10 more to spread around those provinces, is that fine?

Jokes on you, i'm with my literal family right now. But family stuff doesnt last for more than 10 hours in a row, while I have 48 literal hours to send my turns.

What are these "thugs" everyone keeps talking about?
>>
>>163618229

A thug is a commander capable of taking out arbitrary amounts of province defence on their own. They let you take undefended enemy provinces without a large investment or significant visible force buildup.

The archetypal one is a Bane with a Frost Brand and a Vine Shield (sometimes a Shroud as well). Many popular national ones, such as Vanherses, can also use ritual movement, meaning you can drop one on every undefended province an enemy nation has in a single turn, and ruin them economically.

This
But seriously, a thug is typically a cheapish but strong chassis, usually with some cheap but effective items thrown on it, that is designed to take out PD by itself, letting you take territory without using your armies to do it. The most classic thug example is probably a Vanjarl with a frost/fire brand and a vine shield, with a W9 bless, which can take on quite a lot of PD without too much trouble due to very high defence + the vine shield entangling the typically crappy PD troops + casting of mistform stopping most hits that manage to come through all of that
>>
>>163618753
>Vanherses
You spelled vanjarls wrong.
>>
>>163618832

Right. Yeah. Hereses are the A1 ones. Jarls have A2. My bad.
>>
Are human/humanoids pretenders so bad? I get making them fight directly is not an option due to their poor stats, but I'm playing around with rainbow mages in SP lately and it's pretty fun, they can cast a lot of shit and I discover a lot more sites than I would with national mages.
>>
>>163619601
>Literally wanting your God to be a meme God
>>
>>163619601
They're not as useful as monsters, titans or immobiles most of the time, since they're usually more expensive to get blesses on, start with lower dominion, can't help you expand, and can still only do one thing a turn/sitesearch every other turn. There's not that many nations that don't want a bless, better expansion or a pretender that can potentially be used in a fight later on without worrying too much about getting hit by a stray thunderbolt. You could probably make an argument for a diversity pretender for most nations, but you need to get things that are specific and important from it.
>>
>>163619601
Some nations warrant picking rainbow pretenders, though you don't want to use them in battles because they'll die like idiots, especially in hostile dominion. Mostly they're useful to open up paths unavailable to your nation and cast end-game spells/craft items easily.

Though there's a great synergy of rainbow pretenders with spooky nations that can dump a lot of dominion points (MA Ermor, LA Lemuria) to get all the sweet paths. Arguably, MA Ermor is better with high bless, but Lemuria can (and I strongly believe that it should) take a rainbow. Lich Queen is especially good. Immortal supercasters are underappreciated.
>>
>>163620051
Sometimes I just want my god to be a wizard that casts shit rather than some guy fighting people.
>>
>>163615441
Yeah, that's plenty. Pretty much only sharing cap circles will be cause for a restart
>>
Oh! If you have a magic being that never heals with an affliction sitting in a lab, the affliction can get healed as well!
>>
>>163621007
Example?
>>
>>163621007
As in through external healing, or as if they had recuperation?
>>
>>163620745
The problem with diversity pretenders is that most of them don't have anything that makes them better at casting spells (except for extra ritual range) than other pretender chassis unless you spend the points to put more magic on them anyway
>>
>>163621007
Maybe you're mixing it up with immortality?
>>
>>163621074
Playing SP as LA agartha, one of my Iron Ancestors that was afflicted (Mute, why he wasn't being used as a commander) was sitting in my cap for like 4 turns, and now he doesn't have mute. Unless it was an event, but I don't know of any events that heal afflictions.
>>163621197
Recuperation, I didn't get a "1 unit has been healed of their affliction message"
>>
If I have a level 3 priest use (magic) on the First Gate, will the gate close that way? I think once I investigated that shit, it said a holy enough man may close it, or something like that

>>
>>163621319

>>
>>163621565
I'm not playing a blood nation.
Because I don't play blood nations you filthy heretic
Anyway, will it close or not? I don't see another way but I don't want my prophet to get sucked into the gate or some other shit
>>
>>163621807
>tell prophet to use "Magic (event)"
>next month he's still on Magic (event) and nothing happened
Well that didn't fucking work
>>
>>163622205
Sometimes it has a % chance to happen, and needs a unit doing the (event), so you might want to wait a while.
