Dominions is a fantasy turn-based war game created by two dudes. One of them is a teacher.

The game combines a simple presentation with an extremely wide array of strategic options, including over 2800 units, 800 spells and 300 magic items. Turns are resolved simultaneously, with players planning battles rather than directly controlling them.

It has simplistic graphics but is easily moddable and extremely deep.

Basically, it's an autist’s wet dream of a war game.

Anyone know what the mod guys use to get all their sprites against a black background? I am about half way through some shitty sprites.

This paint.net thing is really handy by the way. Thanks to the anon who suggested it.
>>

Didnt mean to quote.
>>

Maybe just have to use paint.net to make a black background and line up all the dudes yourself.

I've done that. Might be what everybody does, really.

Are you the Gransys guy? If so, I'm wondering what you intend to really make out of them, since Gransys as its own entity is pretty much just super standard medieval guys. At least, that's what I got from the video game. Or is it just "Everything in Dragon's Dogma, just named Gransys because it works"

What do their rec options look like?

>>
>>163091457
Its supposed to be everything but I was too lazy to think up a name or spell the one I picked right.

Rec options look like super standard medieval guys with bandits and a few cultists. Pawns are recruitable sacred immortals but they are shit because they are supposed to represent the pawns without Arisen. Once I finish that I plan to give them a ton of summons in the form of the monsters from the game and Arisen with their own non shit pawns. The idea is that their standard troops poor and they summon more monsters until their armies are almost entirely monster filled.

I have an idea for an endgame spell that changes the everfall site at the cap into what its like after you beat the dragon and it just starts shitting out gems and monsters but kills a ton of pop and increases death or something.

>>
>>163092794
If I had the slightest amount of artistic talent that would be nice but I am literally worse than most children. One of the main reasons I picked the source I did is because most things are already in the game and I wont have to do much sprite work.

How much do you think worthy heroes changes the value of the luck scale?

Barely. Heroes are cool, but very few are worth, say, dropping a point of Order for Fortune in the hopes of getting one.

>>
>>163092317
I don't know much about DD but I suggest making the pawns into something like recruitable foulspawn. So instead of getting a generic pawn, you recruit a pawn and you get a random one from some class.

Take heat 3 or cold 3 in return for growth 2. After that take a point of turmoil (or a second point of misfortune) for growth 3.

You could also get better scales with a different pretender, like >>163097167 showed.

I think Wind Riders aren't really worth a double bless, a single is usually enough. I do, however, like awake mono-bless chassis, because Arco takes a little while to become strong, and as a mage nation you like having extra gold for setting up forts and labs early.
Here are two doublebless titans, they can put up more of a fight than a human chassis when they wake up.
Two awake mono-bless expanders: these guys will really help your early game by taking provinces themselves, and turning your wind riders into a real threat. You can easily kill a player with these.
Hound of Hades with E6D7 gets you Earth Blood Deep Well, giving you a Hidden in Sands factory, as well as Tarts. And nothing stops its expansion.
And finally, a scales+mono-bless pretender who can forge air hats and summon air queens.

>>163097958
Pegasus riders are resources heavy relative to Arco, but they only cost 27r. With Soth0 you can easily get more than 5. at Sloth 1, I would take Dom6 for 1 sacred mages and 5 sacred units. Of course, it depends on what your cap circle looks like.

I automatically think astral when thinking of arco, but I realized I have little to no use to high end astral beyond will of the fates & eyes of god

so yeah, i may do without and let the mystics take care of it.

huh, i didn't realize pretenders with a path already present had very little empowerment cost. I though the extra cost was for starting the new path only. thanks for the advice

>>163097501
given that i'm running a bless army, I have to stay away as far as possible from recourse consuming scales. the (useful) high end arco troops cost nearly 30 res each.

>>163097958
looks nice, but i don't know how much army supply & 2 astral can give compared to what cold climate takes

how's this one? gets weapons, items, etcs instead of being immobile, dominion strikes me as very low however.

>>163098423
>I think Wind Riders aren't really worth a double bless, a single is usually enough.
i'm a sucker for flyers, and pegasi are pretty strong ones at that. kit them with reinvigorate and good evasion buffs, and you have something that can go far

I considered that nature bless isn't worth the time, but pegasi would have somewhere around 25 hp, which maybe it can use regeneration for prolonged fights. Ultimately, the idea is to test what works and doesn't!

so yeah, i'll try 2 bless arco, summon arco and then expander, and see which i'm more comfortable with.

furthermore, are the arco horse archers useful? I have half a mind of having a chariot front line back by chariot archers
>>
>>163099132
>I have to stay away as far as possible from recourse consuming scales
Cold/heat don't reduce resources, and growth will actually increase resources over time since it increases population.

>furthermore, are the arco horse archers useful?
They're useful, but not for the reason you're thinking of.

You want to use them as melee chariots, because they're actually tougher than the melee chariot.

As archers, they're terrible.

>pegasi are pretty strong ones at that
They're not actually very good.

If you want a nation with stronger flying sacreds, try Helheim and their valkyries.
>>
>>163099132
I've only tried using chariot archers in a "win more" situation, where I had tons of gold but was running sloth 3. They are a little less tough, and only get a short bow in exchange. I think it would be more optimal to recruit the cheaper chariots and indie shortbow archers and just micro them into the same army.

The nature bless is well worth it for a few reasons. For one, your best mages are sacred - so if you move your pretender in on the same turn, they will be auto-blessed and you'll have a chance of surviving turn 1 earthquakes and such. You can also bless anything with a torso slot by making a shroud of the battle saint; that include tarts and golems, as well as banelords and troll kings, making them into SCs or thugs very reliably.

Even if you are running two blesses, I would recommend going sloth 1 and dom 7+. Trust me on this one, you will run out of holy points before resources, BUT ONLY IF YOU DON"T HAVE A SHITTY CAP CIRCLE. If your cap is surrounded by swamps, gg.

Water is the premier wind rider bless, if I were to try a double bless now, i'd probably try W9E9 to make them very hard to kill. Plus that adds quickness and reinvig to your thugs.

mmm, i'll take it into account. I though of quickness and evasion as more deciding than defense, but I think my mages are capable of replacing that just fine

>Even if you are running two blesses, I would recommend going sloth 1 and dom 7+.

Hey just because I don't think this has been mentioned yet
The nation generator includes a program called spritegen.

https://github.com/elmokki/nationgen/releases

It helps you make cool standing animations but it does NOT produce attack animations. By default in nationgen, an attack animation is just the stand animation shifted a few pixels to the left (or right, or whichever)...so you'd have to either do that, or make your own.

Or just not be lazy and edit existing ones/make-new-ones using pdn and whatnot

Otherwise what you got seems usable enough so far, if very generic-human.

EA Pangaea pretender suggestions?
trading points of growth for lowered turmoil down to 1 on each is an option just because unrest should create the other points for maenads but the neutral order/turmoil I find to be unreliable

Trading points of fortune is far less likely

also magic scales as pangaea to me feels like a waste of time; training heirophants in forest provinces for 700 infrastructure +120 gold/turn usually handles research well enough the buff isn't needed
>>
>>163123730
a) Magic scales are decent for Pangaea if you're using centaur researchers (which you should try to avoid, honestly, because Pans and Dryads are great to have when not researching whereas centaurs are eh)
b) Luck 3/Mag 1 unlocks a fair number of additional +gem and free mage events
>>
>>163121716
It's not difficult to create multiple functioning copies of mod nations.

So three Ulmreich nations cooperating to blitz isolated Manicas? Go for it.
Five Sovirus nations ruthlessly destroying one of their own for falling to contribute? Okay!
Nine shifty Manicas trading with everyone while pretending they're neutral? Whatever!

I'm still concerned that it'll spiral into a mess because something isn't really balanced but the idea's still fun.
>>
>>163124253
so growth 2 luck 3 mag 1 then?
or do you think it's worth going to heat 2?

as far as the centaur researcher thing it's generally something I do in order to keep my fort researchers in the field; Panii I find are too useful as commanders and Dryads I usually have site searching and seducing whereas the centaurs I only use to spam temples, preach and ferry troops to where they're needed. They are in my opinion the perfect support commander.
>>
>>163125093
I'd max growth over temp

My build would prob be Growth 3 Heat/Cold 3 Mag 1(map/opponent dependent - cold v xibalba/c'tis, heat v caelum/niefel. Cold when lots of rivers, heat when lots of mountain passes). Then either reduced sloth, turmoil, or higher dom.
>>
>>163114991
The sprites.
Oh dear god the sprites.

Their statline really should reflect the AN attack they have that targets the player.
>>
>>163125269
sloth is such a non-issue as Pangaea there's no build I wouldn't take it on
assuming the rule of 15 unrest = 1 turmoil for freespawn (it's not listed explicitly for Maenads but I've seen it on some other unit somewhere) then 1-2 turmoil scale is probably a good idea; would you say I should favour dominion over it?
7 dominion is ideal for most nations isn't it?

is heat/cold 3 really fine?
also if it's cold v xibalba but there's lots of mountain passes would the disadvantage of being unable to cross mountains while they can be worth flipping it?
>>
>>163118742
See why kids love the taste of cinnamon toast crunch.
>>
>>163126002
It's less money lost over the year than equivalently extreme turmoil since it doesn't reduce your income by the full amount year round. Most maps that see common play are cold-favored as far as movement goes.

6 v 7 dom mostly just matters for how many sacreds you can get.

is 5 dom and Volla for 1 Turmoil instead of 2 Turmoil and 6 dom an alright idea?

the chassis is much worse in combat potential for Pangaea and there's no option to rapidly clear reveller unrest when I need to but there's gem production instead which is neato
I dont think I'd be using my pretender in combat anyway; just not beefy enough even with awe

What are some good, non-nature alternatives to Vine Shields in the light-SC "kill indeterminate numbers of vanilla, unsupported troops" role? It really seems the best but I hardly have any nature gems. Preferably in the Earth or Death varieties. Black Steel Tower Shield seems cheap and solid but I'm a bit wary of the encumbrance. Weightless Kite/Tower Shields would be cool but I have less Air than even Nature.

Black Steel is kind of the only option, huh? The Vine ability is so great though.

Marverni wants scales mostly, though, while Mictlan is full bless. It would be better to pair Marverni with an early game power that also likes scales, since early game vulnerability is Marverni's greatest weakness. Or put Mictlan with something that likes lots of bless and no scales like, uh, pre-nerf Therodos maybe.
>>
>>163140431
>pre-nerf Therodos
RIP Thero, we hardly knew ye.
>>
>>163098135
Typically you want to pair a nation that's got late game scaling, particularly blood magic (like Xibalba or Mictlan) with a nation that's strong enough to take on an early game war (like Xibalba or Vanheim). It's also very helpful to have a nation with stealth (like Xibalba or Pangaea) or flying (like Xibalba or Caelum) in order to help cover your ally, so that you can move up to support them quickly in a strike. Magic diversity is important too, so nations with wide path access (like Xibalba or Berytos) can be very strong when combined with nations that can bring them the few paths that they're missing.
>>
>>163136027
>eyeloss available outside of forging and magic
Interesting.
Not too powerful, but it should make for a nice anti-thug niche.
>>
>>163141168
So Xibalba + Xibalba with a side of Xibalba. Got it.
>>
>>163129396
Vine shields are only supposed to stop the enemy from killing you until you kill them anyway, so being good at stopping enemies is more important than doing it permanently. And being vined stops you outright for a turn or more, especially on low strength units. Being blind reduces attack a lot, but with enough enemies some can still get a hit in because high numbers of enemies also reduce your thug's defense.
>>
>>163142134
Xibalba had no weaknesses.
>>
>>163142356

Undead can get the affliction but it doesn't affect HP or cause further afflictions.

Demons are other thing entirely. They can't even get a disease affliction normally, so spells like leprosy or attributes like disease cloud don't affect them. New player here, is there a specific reason why the devs choose not to make a looby system where people can at least announce their games, organize queues and make things run better than PBM? I'm not saying they should host anything.

>>163172397

That WOULD be hosting something.

And it is worth noting that the devdeam is two dudes, both of whom have full-time jobs that are not game development. It's entirely possible they just don't know how.

The simultaneous resolution thing makes setting that kind of thing up a bit awkward. Games like Frozen Synapse have managed to slap a decent UI on PBEM, but that has an actual dedicated devteam.

I'm not sure what colors I'll go for yet but it's definitely going to be something that'll stand out from the rest.

If you guys have any suggestions, just toss me a message.

Last one for tonight. I know the reason some of them look especially bad is because I finished them and then tried to make them bigger but I' not sure how else to go about it.

the armor

did you grab it from somewhere else? it looks too out of place.

beyond that, it doesn't look half bad. you have to redo de armor on the top four

First four sprites on the top row are good. Last two are absolute ass.

Same on the second row.

First two sprites on the second row are just default sprites with lightning, second two are garbage, last two are alright

Last two on last row are mediocre.

I took it from one of the item icons because I just wanted a big slab of metal. Only 2 of them are supposed to be wearing armor Well I suppose the cage on the big guys head counts.
>>163188873
It is indeed a helmet. The golems in the game have big purple glowy spots so thats what those are.
>>163189298
Better results than expected. The ass ones all include things I tried to make bigger. The last on the top row is supposed to be really big and the second on the third row I had to up size a cockatrice head because there arent many turkey heads in the game.
>>
>>163189674
Actually thinking about it I can probably just steal a gutplate from the warhammer ogres mod.
>>
>>163189674
You can't just increase the size of a non-vector image, it turns into garbage if you do that. If that's how you're going, you need heavy editing to salvage them afterwards.

Sweet.

When I tried screwing with the flag material, all I managed to do was change the pole. I'll pull up a tutorial later and hopefully get that figured out. If not, thankfully there's guys like >>163188584 and >>163189964 around so all of this should be sorted pretty quick.

Owl Quill and Lightless Lanterns are boring but very useful items to forge. With a hammer they cost almost nothing. Flying boots are great for giving your mages (or thugs/SCs) strategic mobility, but you'll need an air booster to forge them.

MA Ulm has trouble with getting a thug chassis. Your best bet in vanilla is probably golems, which are a bit expensive for standard thug duties.

As for thug equipment, fire brand is standard for the weapon, and shield of gleaming gold or charcoal shield would be your best shield options. Other equipment will depend on what chassis and what you're using it for.

>>163195421
it's a national summon for MA Ulm.

>>163196676
Evocation for nether darts. It's really good, and every one of your cheap mages can use it.

Evocation also has nether bolt and shadow blast, both of which are pretty good, but your main target should be nether darts.

Massed produced pretty much any item that could be useful to your mages. Copper Plate if you're against T-strike, Ring of Fire if you're up against Abysia, Dragon Helmets if you're expecting RoS, wtc

Hello, here is the yuri image for Turn 3 of the game
>>
newfag who just got the game and finished the tutorial here. Is there a tier list for each nation? It's almost overwhelming reading all of them in the manual.
>>
To what point is it worth dividing your forces into multiple squads? Do you always try to fill out your squads to the max, or is there a certain point where splitting the HP pool up will make your army easier to route?

Say if you got 100 blockers, and 100 archers. How squaded will you make them be, if you have multiple commanders to spread them out over?
>>
Is it just me, or is Caevie last every turn, and never does a double turn?
>>
>>163217223
Not really, but there is a winrate spreadsheet at the top
>>
>>163217225
It's always better to have multiple squads because rout checks are squad-wide.
>>
>>163217223
There's Xibalba and then there's not-Xibalba tier.
Don't worry about tiers and just play a nation whose flavor you like.
>>
>>163217223
Don't do that, you absolute madman. Just read about all the main mechanics on the first 80 pages or so, and then start playing a nation that you like thematically.
>>
>>163217703

Aren't they triggered on when a certain percentage of the squads HP has been taken as damage? So bigger squads would be technically more resilient than smaller.

Speaking of which, what happens if you have units with different morale in a squad, whos morale does it go on?
>>
>>163217840
What do you rather experience, 2 of 3 squads routing, and other 1 winning the battle, or a single big squad routing and losing the battle?
>>
>>163217989
considering routing squads make it easier to kill more people and harder to hold the line, and reaching the 70% threshold for auto route faster, yes I rather have one blob of squad hold the line then 4 squads risking a miss
>>
>>163218574
just use morale 30-99 dudes lmao
>>
>>163218654
having morale 30-99 dudes means you don't even have to worry about this whole discussion in the first place
>>
Anyone got the domg pic of this
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vTIIMJ9tUc8
>>
>>163219296
sorta.
30, 50, and 99 are 'special' morale values, but it's possible to boost a unit up into that range without it getting the total immunity that comes with them.
>>
>>163214960

3 attacks a turn means 33 encumbrance per combat round
>>
>>163217223
Yes.

Marignon is Deus Vult tier

And then everything else.
>>
>>163223471
That's not how it works. You make as many attacks as you have per round, targeting any units in one particular square, and incur fatigue equal to your encumbrance. If you have quickness, you make those attacks again, possibly at another square, and incur the fatigue cost again.
>>

Who needs artistic talent when you can fiddle with color settings and mash layers together?

Here's a prototype for Vitt's new flag. I'm personally not wild about the colors but this was so shockingly easy that I should be able to tweak it to something better. In particular, the trident seems off. I'm thus tempted to change it to a nice gold or silver.

I'll knock out Aoi next. Based on >>163190401, I'll try coming up with something using the panty pattern for a laugh.

>>163228029
That's one sexy map! What's the terrain distribution like?
>>
>>163228029
>>163228240
Okay, having opened the map, I now have reservations about its use for Dominions. There's really no indication as to what's what type of province (forest, farm, waste, cave, etc). There's a ton of cold connections, but they seem to be entirely unrelated to the placement of the actual rivers on the map (and only one heat connection, but I'm not super bothered by the imbalance). There's some really bad terrain clustering which is both more difficult to see and makes little sense given the lack of indicators for it. The 'no-starts' seem to be placed at random.

This isn't a meme per se. Its a game where abysia joined a gangbang against bogarus, talked shit for several turns, had this happen, and then staled out of the game. I'd post ulm losing their doggo god to 1 pd, but I couldn't find it.
>>
>>163237858
was this innovation on bogarus side or did abysia fuck everything up?

>>163242482
I'd probably focus on the StR 4 path guys. They have a 70% chance of getting S1 or B1, and a 60% chance of getting 2 levels in one path. Either would make them actually able to do stuff, and together that probably means you can make use of nearly all of them.

The 2 path guys have less than a 50% chance at S1 or B1, and a 1.5% of getting both randoms in the same path. They're unlikely to be much use as anything but researchers.

Of course it depends on price. If the 4 paths cost 240 gold and the 2 paths cost 60 gold, my answer probably changes.
>>
>>163242540

It's 23 mages on one side vs 30ish in the other, it's not required for some newfag to know that >astrapelgists means tstrike spam (or air elemental spam) and Aby didn't have his baits set up correctly to counter that.

The sheer quantity of chaff on Aby's side also indicates he's a weaker player - way too much chaff for a single army with that many mages.
>>
>>163243448
More that Bogarus's mage are massively higher quality in general. The Arch Mage is a pretender too

BLOOD NERF WHEN
>>
>>163243618

A suicide reinvigoration sabbath would smash bogarus' army with Harm and the like, and proper baiting/incinerate would deal with air elementals or tstrikes. 'Bogarus' mages are higher-quality' is wrong, they have lots of low paths and are fiddly and if you hit them at certain points of research they tend to suck, whereas LA Aby's All-Blood All-The-Time approach is pretty okay, not as good as mict's, but still okay.
>>
>>163247891
I feel like you're arguing for argument's sake here, because 7 sanguine anathemants are not nearly enough blood to take on that army.
>>
>>163243851

Create a gamersgate account. Tell me the name of it/whatever I need to gift the game to you.
>>
>>163247974

2 sanguines - sabbath slave

4 sanguines - sabbath master, harm x 4

1 sanguine - sabbath master, reinvigoration x 4

10 anathemant salamanders - phoenix power, summon fire elemental x 2

6 anathemant salamanders - phoenix power, incinerate x 4

That + baits would beat a basic bogarus tstrike army, it would do OKAY against a bogarus air elemental army but those are rarer.

If the archmage is in it's own dominion, one sanguine instead casts LfaL.
>>
>>163248119
>16 casts of 2 AN MRN damage will clear that army

Yeah, no. The fire elementals would be pretty huge, but I'd assume he summoned some already. That's still easily Bogarus's win. He's got some other big mages there and is surely casting fire resistance buffs on his own line holders and summoners.

16 casts of 6 squares of AN damage will rout 150 peshtsi in short fucking order. Plus whatever the masters do after they go off-script (probably imps), which will help seal the deal. Assuming that most abysia players will summon elementals instead of hurl low-prec fireballs at lines of enemy troops for zero damage is a bad assumption. This thread has repeatedly told people that fireball is 'a key spell' for abysia, usually while telling people abysia is a great nation for new players (hah).

Telling new players to play a literal trap nation is about the opposite of being helpful.

Its a good one for getting a hang on the basics. The first army can handle a lot of expansion and they can evo spam without fear of hurting their own troops.
>>
>>163256617

It gets shredded by any competent player with nearly any other nation and encourages the use of some of the shittier spells in the game, because that's all abysia can cast? Great learning tool.
>>
>>163256762
If they are a noob they are going to get shredded anyway. At least they wont accidentally shred themselves.
>>
>>163256872

Shredding yourself is better than anything you'll 'learn' as Abysia. As is learning expansion tactics, one of the more important parts of the game that leaning on Abysian Infantry means you won't learn. Realizing that getting some of your guys killed is fine if it wins you the battle, discarding that SP 'Oh I cannot take losses' mindset is key for MP dominions, and Abysia doesn't encourage that at all, Abysian battles are all or nothing endeavours where either your Heat and armour and fireballs get countered and your army turns into 15,000g of useless dead idiots, or you stomp whatever it is you're fighting. It's not typical, it teaches few or no transferable skills, the way to win with abysia relies on handing out gems for fire elementals (or blood spells), heavily focused research, and a focused pretender, so the new player has no actual chance to do well, at best they can stomp another new player with abysian deathball, learn nothing, and then get stomped in turn by someone casting destruction or tstrike or whatever.

Babby should learn how to select provinces and move troops in SP. Babby should enter first MP game understanding basically how to expand and that 'research is good'. Babby should know how to script mages in the 'army setup' screen. In other words, Babbies shouldn't be in non-skill-streamed /domg/ games, they should read some guides and practice some expansions first.

Any of the overpowered nations - Bery, EA Xib, MA Ulm, Jotunheim, with advice on what to research, when to invade others, what scales to take, and advising them to come to the thread and give details any time they're unsure, rather than 'keeping it secret because that will totally help'

Any of the nations with overpowered basic units - MA Mict, EA Ulm, EA Van, EA Hel, Ragha with instructions to 'army split and raid' and again a research plan, a scales plan etc

Give them a nation they have a chance to experience the actual game with, where they can turn a battle with their magic use, maybe equip some thugs. Not a nation where it's either 'no thought just fireballs' unless you're doing complex sabbath-powered blood shenanigans or taking a god specifically to summon pedoseion or something dumb.

Something like EA/MA Pangaea or Fomoria. Nations with a variety of powerful tactics that are easy to execute but that showcase the strength of magic well, and are flexible enough to manage even if you start out with the wrong foot (for example, W9 is a go-to for Pangaea for a reason, but you could have almost any pretender or scales and not be fucked and still accomplish stuff with buffed revelers or stealthy armies or assassinating enemy commanders or something).

What's a summon nation? You mean Agartha and where you drown in magma children? Or do you mean you built a 600-strong ball out of all your units you spent 40 turns making your 12-province income into, and then charged it forward, and it died, and then you felt sad?

>>163257551

It also beats a Bogarus with similar research, because buffs like fog warriors do very little when your strategy relies on fire elementals and magical damage AN damage. What? SP turns do not take the same time as MP turns. They also require more investment to get into and create, do not allow for rapid restart & changing of plans (because you just realized a basic thing as you were learning the basics), and you influence other people's games, which can throw them off cause some total newb is basically handing territory and capitals out to other players.

Vine shield is definitely better, but there's a bunch of nations which don't get N2 and do get F1E1. Sometimes you want to take two shields, as well.

>>163259768
How about I fucking set you AI instead? You're always the last one to send turns.
>>
>>163260063

The average responses to 'just got this game, wat do' are;

1. Play MP.

2. Play Abysia.

3. Read the manual (all billion fucking pages of it)

The new players stuff in the OP is not better. 'Play Abysia' is also the most common reply to 'which nation should I play in MP', right next to the ever-helpful 'it depends'.

>>163255842
>>163257681
I think Abysia would be a decent choice for a first game. I'd preferably recommend some human nation with better diversity, but I'd recommend Abysia over most of the top tier nations you listed.

The main benefit is that Abysia is hard to screw up. That's the same reason why fireball instead of fire elementals. Fireball can be scripted on every mage and left there for moderate effect, whereas a noob could quite well waste all his fire gems casting elementals against PD or something.

Your recommendations are good nations, but consider how a noob might play them without further direction. Most of them need to go into blood heavily, and a number of their strategies are unusual. Also, recommending top-tier nations risks getting the noob ganked, whereas abysia is not a priority target for anyone.

Buffing Cu Sidhe to make them worthy of summoning (they're worse than Marv's freespawn boars at this point, and they cost almost as much as jotun wolves which are crazy good), buffing sacreds a little (maybe better stats for golden spears?), buffing basic elf infantry, making Ris worth recruiting over regular sidhe ponymans. Also, something needs to be done with their magic lineup. Their paths are among the worst in the game. I mean, air is good, but A/N has fucking nothing.
>>
How's this faggot for EA tien chi?
>>
>>163261559

The steam forums for the game and dom4mods (invisionfree forum) both also have games, and you're less likely to get memed on than in a domg game where Sy is lurking around every corner.

>>163261251

Abysia comes pre-screwed. Fireball and 20g infantry is screwed, against nearly anyone. Rain all but counters the nation. Rain. And the bits of the nation that are not screwed are hard to use, like EA and MA blood magic with only cap only blood mages, needed research goals with your mages costing stupid amounts. If a noob wastes fire gems on PD, he learns to keep most of his gems on a noncaster commander, and the words 'gem scout' suddenly make sense to him. If he just gets murdered, what does he learn? Potentially nothing. Abysia has no obvious way out of the vast majority of things that murder it - you need to build that into a pretender, or have been researching it the entire game up until that point, or it's a complicated antimagic + bloodletting sabbath strategy or something.
>>
So is Pocket Ship the only way to grant sailing to a commander? I just want a couple mages to be able to keep up with my national mages overseas and 25 gems in paths I don't have is super steep. Like a pocket canoe or something, he doesn't need to take units with him.

>>
>>163262667
Warriors of the five elements, your cap only sacreds which happen to be good even into later stages of the game, since they're killy (high attack density) and have elemental resistances. They're absolutely worth taking a bless for, given that you also have other sacred summons that like blesses.
>>
>>163261559
We recently started a couple of games, so nothing recruiting right now.

If there's a decent amount of interest, I could set up a noob (no wins yet) game.

>>163262053
Air 9 is a terrible bless in general. EA T'ien Ch'i likes water, astral, fire, nature major blesses (not all at once).

Drain is really bad for EA T'ien Ch'i. If you remove the drain (take cold to 3) your scales are alright. You could trade Turmoil 3 in return for magic 3, which is really helpful for your research. Also, drop the point in production to take growth 3.

>>163262667
WotFE = Warriors of the Five Elements, your cap-only sacreds.

They're nearly untouchable in melee if you take W9.
>>
>>163262667

Chinks have the following stuff going for them:
1. very good cap only sacreds,
2. all their mages are sacred,
3. their cap only mages are extremely diverse granting you access to all magic but one
4. they have good sacred summons
5. they have good human troops with excellent archers
6. they can summon sacred ghosts in combat

Now there are the issues that chinks face:
1. their non cap mages are very bad and mostly useless in battle
2. their cap mages need a communion to make use of their magic
3. they dont have a reliable communion slave mage

As such I suggest a strong bless since all your shit is sacred plus maximum gold scales you can fit

I already posted some suggestions. My main points: cu sidhe are less useful than freespawn boars and cost as much as jotun wolves (so either make them cheaper or more stronk), there's no reason to recruit Ris over regular sidhe thugs (guaranteed E1 would make them really really useful as thugs because of E buffs alone), and the general lack of good paths should be fixed somehow (add +20-50% D to A2 ladies maybe?).

Kayak is probably better than canoe as it's more often a single-seater. And Inuits are already part of Dominions lore as LA Atlantis.

It should be noted that TNN isn't actually complete trash due to A2 Assassins recruit anywhere, and a passable sacred elf (thx to magic weapon being quite good at times).

Eriu loses these 2 unique aspects of the nation, in exchange for jack shit.

Therados, BE thugs/golems, gives them some life in lategame against ethereal summons.

It depends. In this case, yes because there's very little your pretender will be important for in the first few years.

Scales look solid. You could probably take some sloth (in return for more order, probably) if you're expanding with W9 WotFE, since they're cheap on resources. Test it out in a singleplayer match, though.

>Maybe just have to use paint.net to make a black background and line up all the dudes yourself.

Yeah, that's the way I do it with my four nations as well. One thing that makes it easier is to make it on two layers. Have one layer be solid black, then you can copy the sprites on top of that (the sprite's background should already be either blank or solid black anyway), then save it as a .pdn so you can always make quick edits.
>>
>>163283217

It depends.

If the commander is the only commander on your side, then his squads will rout off the battlefield when he leaves the battlefield (not when he starts retreating). If there are other commanders on the battlefield with sufficient leadership to take the retreating commander's squads on, then the squads will continue performing their orders. If there are other commanders on the battlefield, but they DON'T have sufficient leadership to support the retreating commander's squad, then, uh, I think it picks squads at random and routs them until there's enough to fit in available leadership?

What scales do various fantasy empires run?

What were the pretender builds of some of the Malazan immortals, for instance, or the Lord Ruler from Mistborn?
>>
>>163304095
The Malazan Empire under Kellanved was pure scales. But had an insane amount of unique heros. O3/P2/Neutral Temp/G2/L1/Magic 2. Kellanved would be a basically a small rainbowish mage who would utilize the crazy cast of unique Heroes, to lead and back up his army. Maybe a unique ability to assimilate mages from other nations, and definitely a lot of sailing on their commanders so the Cap Only (non sacred) Malazan Marines could get to the front easier. Would have no Sacreds.

Lord Ruler was O2P2/C1/G0/Mis3/D3 and instead of any major blessings he had a bunch of random paths to make him an SC. Dom 9 or 10. Sacreds would be the Steel inquisitors which would cause unrest to increase while increasing dom. Kinda a weird cousin of MA Ulm.
>>
What's the BEST thug chassis?

Hard mode: No it depends
>>
>>163304095
Is Mistborn as bad as Stormlight Archive? I couldn't take those Kaladin chapters. "Bend over and take it" the protagonist.
I was ambivalent to the ending he wrote for Wheel of Time (he did what he could, given the mess of plot threads needing resolution) but I keep hearing good things about Sanderson and I feel I owe him a second chance.
>>
>>163305281
Nothing is ZE BEST at anything.

Toppest thug/SC chassis include: golems with N9, tartarians (mostly A2E3 and E4, but also dudes with sickles), grigori, seraphs, and many more less known examples like Kin Breaker hero etc.
>>
>>163305281
Grigorius the Grigori
>>
>>163305281
For SC's definitely Tarts for their affordablitiy compared to other Chasis and the magic paths and health. Kitted tarts are super nice if you get the right paths.

For just thug duty, probably Vanjarls or Skratti just because they're recruit anywhere and get the job done for less than 300 gold and 20 gems (probably less with hammers).
>>
>>163305003
>Cap Only (non sacred) Malazan Marines
I wouldn't really call them cap only, honestly. They came from everywhere and had master sergeants training them. Agree with the rest, though. The Malazan Empire was also very mage-heavy, but a lot of the mages that they pulled from all over were just minor local dudes, so I'd say it's more like efficient use of indies while also having native access to near full diversity like Berytos.

>>163305281
Probably Sidhe Lords or Vanjarls. Rec-anywhere, stealthy, magic phase movement, good combat stats. Tarts once you get them are better, but they're more end-game thugs.

>>163305480
I haven't read Stormlight Archive. I think a lot of Sanderson's fame and goodwill comes from the writing workshops and other community interaction he does rather than just the books themselves. He's the sort of author that's really out there, both talking to his fans and other aspiring writers. I preferred his writing in WoT to Jordan, but then again I didn't like Jordan's later writing at all.
>>
>>163304095
>>163305003
Kellanved was good at the game while everyone else was shit. He made his nation look OP by using the same nations as everyone else.
>>
>>163305762
It's been a couple years since my last read through but I had the impression every Malazan Marine was trained on Malaz by Braventooth. Or was it just all the Marines in the book were trained there? Also you could make the case to recruit them coastal, I think that would be a good compromise especially since they're you know like Marines.

And I agree with you on they basically made good use of indies, honestly I think the best way to represent their mage cadres would be foreign slow to recruit "Cadre Mage" which would have a shit ton of diversity through random paths and even maybe a random chasis.
>>
>>163306357
> I had the impression every Malazan Marine was trained on Malaz by Braventooth

>>163305003
I'd actually argue that Lord Ruler had garbage scales. Given that nothing grows in his dominion, he DEFINITELY had death scales. Order's a given, but Prod seems out of place given that it's explicitly mentioned all over the place how listless and weary the skaa are. That reads like sloth to me.

I'd say he wasted his points on an expensive chassis with crazy high dom, dumped scales, and took a bunch of random magic paths. Awful pretender design tbqh
>>
>>163305935
You're right, basically the Malazan Empire's success was basically because Kellanved knew how leverage everything to his full advantage. He used assassins right before major battles, knew how to get the most out of his mages, and just overall had better strategy than everyone.

>>163305762

Also what paths do you think Kellanveds initial cabal would have? D4 for Dassem, S for Dancer? High Fire and Astral for Tay?
>>
>>163306910
Yea I guess it would be sloth scales for the Ska but they were relatively productive because of a high population. I mean there were a shit ton of skaa weren't there? And yea Lord Ruler had a shit build. If there was another pretender type there he'd get btfo.

>>163306571
Gotcha, yea it's been a while since I read them. Coastal recruit then. I guess the only cap only for them would be claw masters and high level talon assassins? Make Admirals and High Fists StR?

>>
>>163306998
>Also what paths do you think Kellanveds initial cabal would have? D4 for Dassem, S for Dancer? High Fire and Astral for Tay?
Dassem and Dancer were both characterized by combat ability rather than magic. We know Dassem had an absurd attack/defense score, to the point that he could walk into an army and parry everything, but he never really used magic aside from items and later being a champion for Hood. I'd say, if anything, just priest levels would do, but 20-30+ attack/defense, quickness, and that sort of thing would be better for statting him out as the world's best swordsman.

Agree that Dancer get astral for his blinking and teleport shenanigans, but he was also special for being able to just cut people up rather than for casting anything important.

Tay definitely gets a ton of magic. Luckily, the Malazan series is easy to put into Dominions terms. Thyr is fire/astral, Aral Gamelon is death, Telas is more fire, and the Imperial Warren is more death. His being the former Magus of D'rek could argue for nature too, but he didn't really do anything that nature magic is really known for.

>>163307439
>I mean there were a shit ton of skaa weren't there?
Well, they were basically the totality of the continent's population, so yeah. Probably fewer of them than before the Lord Ruler took over.

>>163307821
Yea I think H2/H3 and crazy stats and inspiration for Daseem would work, Also would spawn with his 5 of his "Sword" at the start of each battle which would be similarly crazy on stats. Daseem would also probably get "Heretic" for his Hood association.

Dancer would have crazy high attack stats, the S would give him ethereal, and he would probably come with ambidextrous and AN daggers.

And I agree on Tay, and I would say skip adding heretic for Tay because he really left D'rek behind. He too would spawn with body guards probably.
>>
>>163309550
Daseem spawning with his sword actually makes even more sense when you look at his later appearances, when the soldiers thought dead emerged from the ranks to fight at his side once again.

Dancer was famous for using his rope (The Rope), so maybe an entangle attack.

For Tay, his bodyguards actually changed over time and weren't always particularly special in their own right, so I'd say that their appearance was more just the player being smart and putting bodyguards on the valuable mage rather than him spawning with them

Provinces have a total resource value, 100%.

Each adjacent fort takes admin% of the province's resources (unless this province has a fort too, forts do not provide resources to other forts).

Any remaining resources will be available to be spent on the province, up to a maximum of 50% (100% if you have a fort)

For fighting against an army with mage support (presumably that's why you have an amulet of antimagic) you tailor your gear to the types of mage support that you're fighting.

I think RP/gold tends to be more preferable than RP/turn. There are some other factors like the necessity of reaching a specific early research target, likelihood of getting useful randoms or ability to mobilize the research mages in any useful capacity but all other things being equal, since your ability to support mage upkeep is limited, the more efficient mage will be more research in the long term.
