The funny thing is that while Visage is awkward as fuck to learn, actually using him isn't that hard at all. I am in shitter bracket myself and I managed a 60% winrate with him even before the buffs, though this is largely because he is great against teams that don't use teamwork. At least Meepo takes actual skill to not die unnecessarily.

All he needed was for birds to not have the hits-to-die mechanic or take an eternity for damage to recharge without wasting Stone Form. They were simply too limited in utility for him to be a viable pick. Even his one nerf, Soul Assumption being disjointable, is a moot point because Atos wholly compensates for it and is now one of his most viable items.

He means the "Level Ability" and "Level Stats" key commands. These used a special mode in the old UI that the new one lacks so they had to remove it altogether.

The main issue here is that you cannot skill talents at all without using mouseclicks.

Whenever I've told or shown a regular person how people in this game act, they had a hard time believing that a good percentage of these guys are adults.

Personally, I think calling them "high schoolers" is a bit generous. When I was in high school, people mostly kept to their own and didn't bite someone who wasn't doing anything wrong. Dota players are more like those little shits in middle school who were scrawny and into alternative sports.
I've even noticed this behavior in my own stack...in people who act perfectly fucking sane outside of the game. The game's design inherently brings out the worst in people.

so, what's the best way to start playing this game?

I've been trying to get into it several times, and always failed. I already read a lot of guides, usually search for build guides for the heroes i wanna play and stuff, but it seems like it only takes me so far. I've been playing bot games only.

Ok first of all I have to admit that most of us are totally spoiled in terms of how fast Valve reacted to suggestions and requests from reddit regarding any sort changes in DotA in the past. It felt like they did almost everything for us: the tweaks, the hats and even the god damn memes. More than one time I was astonished by the fact, how fast they implemented stuff.
To me it always felt like this is something which makes DotA truly special.
That's why I am even more surprised about some changes happening right now. First I thought: ok it will all just take time and they can't implement some of the requests in the exact same way as they are suggested right away, but I am not so sure about that anymore.
It seems like some changes are really requested by the vast majority, and Valve simply refuses to implement them in the suggested way.
For example K/D/A LH/D - why do they put in the top left area of the screen instead of the bottom right?
Attributes - why make a popup layout which shows, when you hover with the mouse over the stats instead of simply implementing the stats into the UI like in one of the many many nice UI layouts by some redditors?
The last change regarding the stats in the recent patch was the one which lead up to writing this post. I am no programmer, game or interface designer or whatsoever, but to me it just seems like the way they implemented the stats now is also more complicated in the way how it has to be programmed, than what was suggested by the community. Maybe I am a fool and totally wrong about this, then I want to apologize in advance, but I just can't see any reason to put the K/D/A in a other position than requested.
I'm not sure if Valve just wants to take a hard line and don't be that obedient anymore or what else could be the reason behind this recent development.
This whole progression during the last couple of days makes me kinda sad and I just hope that DotA won't lose it's charm and uniqueness for what I love it.

potrait is too large and distracting, stat numbers are too small and difficult to read, cour controls are far too small and packed away into the corner, where you're likely to miss and activate one of your items like a refresher orb or crimson guard kda/lhd numbers need to be closer to the nexus, and a little bigger for spectators. The camera is far too close as well, it needs to be backed out just a tad.

See, itd be fun, but these Unfair bots are actually hard to beat because I think Valve only updated enemy ai and not your team's ai. I had a Bounty Hunter who would just stand near a ward spot for minutes, doing nothing. I dont think they've adjusted to the terrain yet. They also dont know how to use backpacks and have stuffed fully completed items in there while carrying 2 iron wood branches the entire game.
Also, Earthshaker at 25 with Aether Lense, Octarine Core, and the Enchant Totem is fucking rediculously mobile. He basically has a blink that does damage at that stage.

The paradox of low MMR is that the support heroes that work best in games full of retards are the ones that are hardest to play. I'm not kidding when I say that Visage is one of the best pubstomp heroes in the game below 3k.
