The true contention is if synths are SENTIENT. That is what matters.

>>128821004
Yes they are. Gen 3 synths are completely "organic" -- many of them have no "synth component" whatsoever (what Doctor Amari calls a cybernetic implant). This, in particular, is clearly outlined in the game.
>>
>>128821075
Wut. Same anatomy implies same biology. Do u even science

ED-E ;_;7

yeah the nigger courier was fucking retarded
>>
>>128821004
>they aren't organic

They weren't born human. They are not people. They are not conscious. But they are still composed of organic compounds and they have biological human bodies. The synth component of a synth is not organic, and is central to their being, thus they are not thinking beings. They are simply machines that inhabit an artificially grown, but biological, body.

It's kinda like if you took a freshly deceased corpse and put a robot brain in it. Is it alive? No. Is its body biologically human? Yes.
>>
>>128821153
LIES
OF
DECEIT
>>
>>128821227
The synth component isn't an essential part, but instead an extra cybernetic implant, which Doctor Amari talks about during Curie's quest.

There's a reason why you can kill tons of gen 3 synths and many of them won't have the component in their inventory.

If something is capable of independent rational thinking and feelings, then we can safely assume it's a self-conscious being, whether he's made of flesh and bone or metal or massive cocks.

Prove it.

You literally can't. You can't even prove that another human being can genuinely feel emotion and is a conscious being. Sure, the brain reacts to external stimuli and can form thoughts, but do I know that it is conscious in the way that I am?

It's impossible to know. What I do know is that synths are created in laboratories and human beings are born from other human beings.

>>
>>128821798
I agree, and, even beyond digging deeper into it yourself, I think the game tries very hard to make this clear even on just your first walk-through of the Institute: the majority of the conversations you hear when you enter the different departments are about synths displaying truly human/sentient traits. The fact that you see relatively high level Institute scientists displaying doubts like that is a pretty fucking clear thing.

But then we have stuff like this >>128821737
and the others who go against it either because they rushed through, want to justify their faction choice without having paid attention to lore or just want to be edgy.
>>
>>128821153
if they can consciously make the choice to leave the institute then actively attempt to avoid being "reacquired" for a logically sound reason i dont think their level of sentience matters
like if theyre not people who cares, if they can actively call you out on using them as slaves then yeah theyre pretty much slaves

i mean does the point at which your robot maids stage a fucking coup against do you not just realize "oh maybe we made them too realistic, its kind of a dick move to literally program them to desire freedom and then actively deny them of that freedom while treating them like simple machines despite knowing full well how complicated they are"

>>128821945
That is, essentially, true. The only thing one person can know is that they exist. You can attempt to assure me that you exist, and I can believe you and take that on faith, but I can never actually "know" that.

The only essential difference between a synth and a human being is that synths are created and humans are born. It doesn't matter if I think they are people or not because I can never prove that ANYTHING is a person beyond myself.

However, it's useless to think along those lines, because if nobody is a person and nothing is real, then I would simply cease to act in a meaningless world. But that's fucking boring, so I choose to believe that reality is real and that people are thinking, conscious beings like me.
>>
I wish other companions would give you a nickname
>>
>>128822095
That's a large part of what I find so fucking funny about the Institute. They are either completely blind to what they are doing or ridiculously stupid since they create synths without proper methods of curtailing them. They have all this fancy shit and they can't rig up an implant to track all synths? Or to remotely mind wipe and/or shut them down? Come on.

Similarly to the BOS not being able to keep a single vertibird in the air for more than 1 minute, it makes me lose significant faith in their general competency.
>>

So I made it to the place with the four departments. I met the department leaders. That objective's completed.
Before I went off to meet them, though, I ran into a person who was glad to meet me. They said that they wanted me to be there for "exciting new shit that was going to start happening, shit that they're glad I'm there for," or something to that effect.
The next objective I've been given, "Use the Network Scanner Holotape," doesn't make any fucking sense to me.
Just go to a terminal and load the holotape? Why would I do that? Why can't I and why wouldn't I talk to the person who sent me to go meet the other people? But that person won't to me much right now.

Did I screw up, did I miss something, or is this just odd game design?

Even if I can't prove that anything else is real, I can assume that it is because why wouldn't it be?

Anyway, my point is is that synths are essentially human beings in the sense that human beings are essentially human beings, and that making a distinction is irrelevant.

Here is why it makes absolutely no sense:

He would have starved
He would have died from dehydration
He probably would have suffocated
Even if he survived that shit, his body would be fucked by being stuck in a dark cramped space for 200 years
And even if he miraculously survived with his body intact, he would have been driven insane by that shit.

It's a reference to the fact that kids used to actually get stuck in 1950s-era-tech refrigerators with enough regularity for it to be a real fucking problem. Especially ones that had been disposed of, left at a dump or at the side of the road or whatever. Kids would just go missing and, if no one found them, they'd starve or suffocate in there, because their latching mechanism made them impossible to open from the inside.
Manufacturing standards for refrigerators legally had to change because of this. It was a whole big societal "thing."
Not just a hacky movie reference.

I don't think they go that far.
I forget where I heard this, I think from some other game's development (Ace Combat 5 / Zero) , but what they tend to do with references to the actual use of nuclear bombs in Japanese game localizations is to just pretend that any nuke is actually just a powerful albeit conventional explosive bomb.

So in Fallout they might rename the Mini-nukes to "Mini-bombs" or something, but I doubt they'd alter the in-game model. I know that they definitely rename the Fat Man launchers to something else. But it's all very generic.
Maybe they replace the mushroom clouds with more regularly-shaped explosions, too, but they already have those explosions in the game files.

After 50 or so days alive in basically that state, he went into heart failure and was declared more or less brain dead. They then kept him alive for a further 30 or so days before fluid loss from lack of skin/external tissue finally killed him. His doctors were very determined to keep him alive, almost to the point where it was some weird pride/honour thing for them, I suppose.

Firstly, apparently Japanese medical culture tends to prioritize the extension of life over everything else, even if the patient is clearly suffering.

Secondly, it will be a long, long time before anyone has the chance to observe the effects of radiation poisoning this severe on a person in a modern medical environment again. I'm sure there were some influential people behind the scenes telling the doctors that things would go very, very poorly for them if they do anything less than their best to prolong Ouchi's life (while taking very detailed notes of his development, of course).

>The radiation produced by a microwave oven is non-ionizing. It therefore does not have the cancer risks associated with ionizing radiation such as X-rays and high-energy particles. Long-term rodent studies to assess cancer risk have so far failed to identify any carcinogenicity from 2.45 GHz microwave radiation even with chronic exposure levels (i.e. large fraction of life span) far larger than humans are likely to encounter from any leaking ovens.[56][57] However, with the oven door open, the radiation may cause damage by heating. Every microwave oven sold has a protective interlock so that it cannot be run when the door is open or improperly latched.

I played some STALKER, I found I couldn't get very into it after it began to be more about (from what I remember) psychic energy and some other more science-fiction stuff. I don't have anything against it, it's a great game, but I guess I went into it expecting it to veer more towards the Chernobyl aspect of its setting (or the Roadside Picnic aspect of it) but they took it in its own direction (which is perfectly fine).

Either way, I'm still loving the subject more than ten years after I found out about it.

Modern microwaves don't do shit.

It's that old radioactive quackery from the early 1900s to the late 60s that did. Like the X-Ray for your feet so you could get the best fit but caused cancer instead, or radium "invigorated" water that was supposed to provide health benefits that instead rotted a guy's jaw off.

Literally everything that we know about how human bodies react to hypothermia comes from Nazi experiments at one concentration camp. That might be the case with a few other smaller areas of medicine, too.

In terms of radiation accidents, the medical community realizes (and has realized for a while) that once a person reaches a certain dose of radiation, they are quite simply fucked. Decided to finish it anyways (thank you, YouTube, for speed controls).

He has a decent basic point, but he blabs on forever in the beginning to little actual benefit and then does not make his point effectively enough later because of it. He does not actually prove or discuss "Shandified" narrative, but, instead, a more fleshed out world. He's completely full of shit. His entire beginning is about different causes and effects and the second half is only about adding extra detail to the world. What a joke.

Chernobyl happened because the design of the reactor was outdated and inherently flawed, from what I remember.
Fukushima's reactor had a pretty critical flaw too, something to do with backup cooling tanks that would read as full even if they were absolutely empty due to some engineering fuckup. Then the earthquake and tsunami happened, the fuel melted when the backup cooling system died, etc.

Just make sure the place is built properly, and you're good to go. I support nuclear power myself.

To elaborate, I believe that proper discussion of "Shandified" narrative (a stupid fucking term that isn't needed because there are already tons of discussions about it) would include something like the incredibly readily available example of Morrowind and how it lets you extensively sequence break. That would be a great example for that and everything he (attempts to) talks about.

The 2pac harness fits almost perfectly but the HA combat chest has a bit of clipping in some areas and is too large in others. However when I wear both at once, the HA combat chest is thrown even further out of proportion.

How can I make them play nicer together? Can I solve it by just editing the HA stuff?

I glanced quickly at the wikipedia article, and it seems to have been a combination of design flaws, operator errors, and improper testing.
Of course, we probably won't ever know the exact circumstances of what happened because the operators all died horribly not long after the accident.
The reactor was cooled by water, which also absorbed neutrons and moderated the fission reaction. If the water is flash heated to steam, it reduces its ability to absorb neutrons, which in turn speeds up the reaction. Then add in the graphite tips of the control rods, which slowed the free neutrons and allowed them to fission more U-235, spiking heat and power output and most likely causing the explosion. The control rods shouldn't have all been removed from the reactor, either.

You can only stay in Pripyat and the Zone of Exclusion for like an hour or two, and (to my knowledge) the radtiation given off is mainly alpha particles which can barely penetrate skin.
The real danger is if you roll around in the grass, run through trees and bushes, or inhale the dust in the buildings.

People keep using this to complain about spoilers. I'm more concerned with the phrasing.
First of all it precludes female SS since it says "son of the WIFE of the SS".
Second of all it implies male SS was cucked by not directly calling him the SS's son

Besides, wiki's are always rife with spoilers. Most do a better job at hiding them than wikia though

Scientists are still debating how healthy it is to live in the exclusion zone, but there are some animals that survive within it (albeit with genetic damage of one sort or another) and there were elderly residents of Pripyat and the surrounding area that remained there even after everyone else was evacuated. They lived for at least a couple years that I know of.
You can take a tour of the exclusion zone too, I'm hoping to someday soon.

No one lives in the town of Pripyat, but yeah there are around two hundred (might have gone down) people living in the surrounding town in the Zone.

I don't know where the fuck they got their information, but Wikipedia says that there are ~700 people still living in Chernobyl even though the Samosely article only says 136. i guess the rest are government employees and those that are still operating the other reactors at the CNPP (Aren't they still running?).

I agree that the Lovecraft references in 4 have been utterly underwhelming.
Pickman could have included some shit about ghouls pre-war living in the subway system from some fucked up experiments or something, although that ignores established lore (not like Bethesda doesn't do that anyways).
Dunwich could have included something other than ghouls, or something half-interesting.
I expected Lovecraft references, but the ones we got were just boring.

I'd imagine that America's biggest and arguably most important city would have some missile-intercepting shit that could catch a portion of the bombs as they came in. If Mr. House could get his hands on that shit, then the mayor of New York should be able to requisition something like that.

You act like most people know or care about the "lore", especially that "lore" that existed before fallout 3. They don't know more than what they learned on a wiki somewhere and wont play the earlier Fallout games because why bother?

Fallout lore is old and needs updating from time to time. Deal with it. The bad part isn't that "ERMAGERD TODD" has anything to do with it, the bad part is that the devs made nothing new in FO4 - it is just skyrim with new landscape and YAY SIMTOWN... without real control b/c mods will fix it.

If I had more stick-to-it-iveness, I'd pull up a save at the Institute and show you a screenshot of the terminal screen where somebody in the Advanced Systems department asks for permission to run a research project to see if the Molecular Relay can be tuned to re-assemble shit at different sizes, effectively like a shrink ray, and Madison Li tells him that he's being retarded.

I don't know how else you were planning to fit a vault inside a person's body.

I'd like curie if there was more to her than just being a naive french robot but as it is right now Bethesda couldn't even give her a proper SPECIAL. Cait would be better too if she wasn't such a cunt all the time. I'll have to stick with the qt for moralfags through my travels but I still keep the other girls in my personal settlement.

That's the basic theory that I've heard. time is just a way we perceive things, I can feel something, or taste it. But without the concept of time it would all seem to happen at once. Or it would never happen. even the concept of at once/never relies on a concept of time though.

Time and space are both units of measurement. A cube's dimensions could be 4x4x4 but what would it's time value be? I am unsure if time should be considered a proper dimension.
I also wonder if there are other "dimensions" we exist in that aren't spatial.

The Dagoth Ur image is just Kirkbridean dipshittery.

I figured as much since the part about the houses was familiar. I really dislike C0DAfags. There's no reason TES can't have airships, high fantasy, crazy tech shit and it's been around since before Morrowind but C0DA is just retarded and the writing is shitty.

a geiger counter is basically a charged tube with an electrode inside it, filled with a low pressure gas. when ionizing radiation passes through the tube, the gas ionizes and allows some electrical current to flow, which is then sent to a speaker.

so each time you hear a click, that's an individual gamma ray, or alpha / beta particle hitting the tube.
>>
>>128852214
Radiation is fucking scary.
