I've always gone off the assumption that the "unnamed" APA Beth made is just Mk. II which in Fallout 2 shares the same sprite as Mk. I and when you consider how many shared weapon sprites there are, well, it seems fair they could give it an actual different design

On that thing stuff makes sense because the Enclave got a stronghold in Chicago. Since they're pretty isolated an evolution of their original armor/a second project would have inspiration from the BOS.
Problem's that in the Pip-Boy it's just named as "Enclave power armor". Brotherhood categorizes it as APA Mk II despite having no similarities with the classical one.
Hell, that Mk II name isn't a consensus with fans.

How long ago was the Quincy Massacre compared to the SS waking up? I know they both happened in the same year but I doubt ALL the shit that essentially ruined the Minutemen happened in one day.
Either way, they were losing people left and right as they wandered.
I'd say it makes the most sense that back on west coast oil rig days Mk. II was then coming into production and as such, most people using APA (a few were still in T-51b, remember) would have been still equipped with Mk. I - flash forward to Enclave on east coast and they have mass produced Mk. II and equipped their force entirely with it - enough so that they have moved on to R&D on Hellfire APA (Mk. III ???). With its design only now being different just being retroactively put down as an "oversight" in Fallout 2.

I feel like I'm looking at past fallouts like NV with rose tinted glasses but it feels like there were always terminal entries filled with email chains or stories to read about the building or area you're in. Doesn't feel that way in fo4.

Actually there are some that are connected with the world, about the raiders. If you kill everyone at D.B. High School the guy at the Gwinett Brewery takes note of that, I think. And in another location as well that I can't remember.
There's a different bunch of them. When I (finally) took out the Corvega factory for the Minutemen quest, I saw like 5 or 6 terminal entries of other places I'd wiped out earlier. Not sure how they're connected overall, but it would seem like most organized raiders are at least roughly aware of their (relatively) neighboring raider groups.

Can't be. I successfully defended Warwick against a dozen Super Mutant overlords (level 50+ is a bitch sometimes) which got two of the named NPCs there killed. One had a note on his body from his wife who left him and took the kids. It was sad. I also lost a ghoul at The Slog.
That is one of the problems I have with settlements and leveling. What attacks a settlement shouldn't be based on your level but how awesome the settlement is. I shouldn't have a dozen overlords armed with fuck-off upgraded weapons, including at least one missile launcher, attacking my dinky-ass tato farms with two settlers on them. On the other hand places like Sanctuary should have entire raider armies trying to bang-down the door for all the purified water and food that place produces, not that any of them would survive longer than 5 seconds once they got inside.
I feel like the Settlement system needs a major overhaul.

I've had enemies literally spawn right in front of me in HA, inside the walls. They also spawn inside my walls at Starlight Drive-in and the Co-op. They never seem to do this in Abernathy, though.
Like I said, a message should pop up in the upper left corner. If you're not sure you saw it, check if you've still got the "Defend settlement X" in your miscellaneous quests. If it's gone, then you done it, if it's still there, you gotta finish a straggler or two.
At Hangman's Alley you should check by the water, the street behind the chained door and around the entrance with the car wreck next to it, at the very least.

I was surprised I didn't find one of Deacon's mark on the nearby objects to be honest.
There's also one type of attack when your settlement turns against one of your settlers, who happens to be a synth. If you got this kind of quest, then I'm sorry. You could try one of those tricky workarounds from the appropriate wikia page to be able to finish the quest, but I'd suggest simply doing it by console command(s).

My only mod other than extended dialogue is an improved settlement attack alert one. It brings it up in the middle of your screen and you have to click okay. But I've mostly ignored MM until recently so have only ever had one attack. I was waking up to them but then went back to Castle to set up defenses and, in the space of talking to the old bitch, got 3 quests from the fucking radio. Finish them so they don't fail, don't want to miss experience so turn in to Preston. Get one more automatically that I then finish but don't turn in to stop the madness.
Fuck MM, glad I chose a different faction.

It literally ticks when you kill the right enemy or the right amount of enemies. There's no waiting besides unless you feel like sitting on your ass for the enemy to come to you.
No, because it only applies to FULL companions - not temporary followers.
Hell, even Dogmeat doesn't count. You can use the LW perk + have dogmeat and not lose the benefits of either.

I killed all of them. All of them were dead. I looked around and there were no more. I checked every nook and cranny and there were no enemies. I looked around the outside of the settlement and there still were none. There were none left to kill. How is 100% of them being killed not enough?

If you kill enemies outside of the boundaries the quest will fail sometimes.
If you have a quick save from after you killed everything but before you left the area drag the body into the boundaries, resurrect that shit and then kill him again. It should work.

Fun fact: This armor is what made me want to stop doing requests.
I know that endless quests is semi-RP, but I wish you could, say "stop quests to consolidate your current holdings." It feels too much like an endless slog you have no control over.
I think it would be nice to have some form of automated improvement so you don't have to build everything up. Or even just the ability to train some MM who can respond instead of you. Hell, make it a small strategy add-on if you want to require interaction. I just want to be able to move on and not feel trapped into doing a quest and then having to do some quick settlement building to get a new spot to a self-sufficient, defended level.
Ask Todd. That's how it usually works. Maybe it bugged, maybe there's a sneaky one you missed that ran off somewhere. There's no accounting for all the shit this game could pull off.
Especially when I can't anticipate what I'm getting into. Like a twofer quest where I helped one place by clearing another for settlement. The other one (the Sunny whatever Co-Op) had no food or water, so that made it more annoying to deal with 2 random settlers who instantly appear instead of how I like it with that kind of place staying at 0. Instead of feeling like an awesome bonus of 2 for 1 it felt like I got tricked into more drudgery. And that feeling is the essence of what's wrong.

The only DLC I've ever bought from Bethesda was Shivering Isles (Oblivion was my most played title by far). Everything always feels like it comes too late for me to get into since I'm so hyped for the games that I play the shit out of them ASAP and then don't have much if any new content to help motivate me to return. How much have I missed out on, /fog/? Should I try hard to get them this time?
If you have a burning desire to play Fallout 3, and only if, Broken Steel, The Pitt and Point Lookout weren't that bad. All added a decent amount of playable content, had some interesting ideas and were fun enough, if not perfect. Writing is still Bethesda tier, but better than Fallout 3 main quest.

I already went back to playing New Vegas after a few weeks of owning the game, what a major disappointment Fallout 4 was. Who thought the entire fame should suffer for crappy storytelling and a half-assed building minigame?

This outfit has like 50 different textures alone. I'm impressed at how much of a messy mashup this is. No fucking telling how big the end mod will be.
So about what I expected. I know the bare bones of Broken Steel's story but that's it. I don't think I'll be heading back. But if that's the baseline I think I'll put more effort into paying attention to Fallout 4's stuff. Thanks for the viewpoint, anon.

Todd. All his recent interviews included a variant of "we wanted to tell a strong story."
Because casuals like simple stories and a bigger audience equals more profits. This is obvious and has been discussed to death.
A good world is better than a good main quest for replayability, probably for immersion as well. Nobody played Skyrim for the main quest. Alternate Start is a popular and recommended mod for Skyrim - it basically cuts out the main quest altogether and lets you choose your own backstory in a ghetto way (couple of lines of text, changes starting city, changes starting equipment) and yet does so much for the game, especially if you're roleplaying.
Instead of focusing on their strength (worldbuilding), they focused on their weakness (story), and it kind of but not really rounded out to give us a mediocre product. It's Bethesda's best story, but not their best world. It's not shit, but it's not great.
Three major changes they made - settlement building, more story-oriented, NPC dialog system - I would have given them up immediately for a few handplaced towns like Megaton or Rivet City and a bigger world, keeping all game and dialog systems like their previous titles. In fact, I wonder what people here would choose if they could have chosen a direction

This particularly pisses me off, because of how much potential it had. They could have made an addictive mini-game out of it. Instead, it feels soulless and empty.

The settlement system, not building in general?
Too shallow. The only things you can do with settlements:
-Set up patrols for invincible provisioners
That's it. They have no impact on the story, and everything you can do WITHIN them is shallow and a chore.
It can be fixed by expanding on them.
Get some unique quests that can pop up at settlements to give them flavor, unique NPCs & the like.
Maybe set specific goals for building at settlements.
Have them play an actual role in the MQ or world at large- minutemen establishing communications with them was a start, but they didn't go anywhere with it after that. Think establishing the CPG, with INTERACTION with your settlements- the largest ones get to send delegates, that kind of thing.
Well you build them yourself & can micro-manage.
And their being 'optional' is also kind of a plus.
So to improve/maintain that, jesus there are too many ways to improve building to count.
As for the 'optional' part of building them, set up pre-set settlement layouts which you can tell the settlers to slowly work on. You can just capture the settlements & leave them on auto-pilot to establish decent/mediocre settlements, build your own optimal setups, or combine the two. Give settings for tearing down your constructions if they're in the way or not. That kinda stuff.

I still can't believe that Bethesda managed to fuck up making the default settlement areas extend to natural boundaries.
Places where a fence or hedge slides out of the buildable region halfway along, or the settlement is on a hill but the cusp of a ridge is about two feet outside the designated boundary.
Took forever texturing this thing.
Got a few little things to fix, but this came out looking decent. But I am never porting another mashup again, the mesh parts werent really hard, but TEXTURING each individual piece...that took me like 3 fucking hours to assign the textures.

Remember the "your character is a synth" theory floating around before the game came out? They should have gone with that. Casuals would have lapped it up as the most shocking twist of the century.
Imagine a similar backstory to what we got, but you never find your son. In fact, the main quest leads you to the tombstone of your spouse, your child, and yourself - having exited the vault, lived a full life, and died over a hundred years ago.
Not that guy, but I do agree it's a bad idea because:
Some people really, vehemently, totally do not want to do anything related to settlements at all. These same people might actually enjoy the story, and not like finding out that those who do edit their worlds get more of it.
I'd agree if they played more of a role in the world itself, like settlements being able to autonomously assemble, equip, and send out patrols to various sites and maybe bring back crafting resources or items, take slaves, settlement vs. settlement and settlements building themselves slowly over time unless you tell them not to (I'm dreaming here), but not the MQ itself. Regardless, there's definitely a lot more they could have done.
Imagine a simple random encounter like meeting a couple of farmers in the middle of a road bringing one of their wounded family members to your settlement because they "heard there's a surgeon there." Or merchant caravans mentioning specific settlements by name and telling you what they plan to sell/buy there, or mentioning they're avoiding Settlement X because it got attacked and Y people died. That would definitely add to immersion.
Thats probably just a Bethesda thing, since I didnt even touch her arm.

Because most monster modders have trouble understanding subtlety or not-ripping-models-from-unrelated games. Take the Skyrim Monster Mod

I swear that last one is random too. In the final room in Corvega, you extend that bridge, cross it and there's a railing you can jump to over to the right, first time I played I fell through the gap, second time onwards I just stop and get wedged instead.
Would've been superior IMO. Considering they pushed synths personhood as a central theme so hard in this game but never actually make that issue feel critically important for the player character.

Can anyone name any specific examples of how Fallout 4's AI is better than Skyrim's AI?
Has the Radiant AI system been significantly improved since Skyrim? Didn't Todd say something in Oblivion how NPCs could go from reading a book to practicing their archery because of how advanced the AI is?
Firstly you only need a settlement if you ask the Minutemen for help, though. Otherwise you just build it at a Railroad Safehouse or the Airport.
And you don't have to do that much collecting (at least not if you ask the Railroad or Brotherhood for help) since you're given the vast majority, if not all, of the required materials.

You don't have to side with the minutemen anon, that's how they'd be 'involved' in the MQ.
Capturing them & waiting is all you'd need to do. No collecting supplies, no building. Not unless you want to speed it along & don't want to sit on a bench somewhere for a few in-game days.

I really think that the PC not having an isolated start fucks things up. It makes the player feel tied to their story and also forces them to care for the little shit.
For melee should I go with the faster Kremvh's Tooth which offers 85 dmg per hit + poison or go for the slower Super Sledge which offers 153 dmg?
I also have Grognak's Axe which is a beast VATS weapon (costs the same amount of AP as a combat knife)

Voiced dialogue isn't really that big of a deal; I don't get why so many people hate it. Dislike I could understand, but it's so fucking vehemently loathed by you people it's just irrational. The simplified dialogue system was the problem, not the protagonist having a voice.
That being said it's be nice if the next Fallout game had the ability to turn it off in case people don't want it.
You know, before launch I was shittalking it but I actually kind of liked it, mainly because Nora's voice is cute.
It cuts down the amount of dialogue by a shitton though, and if it's a choice between voice actor and dialogue, I'll pick dialogue.
Voiced protagonist is a problem because it hugely limits your dialogue options to the constraints of time, budget and mechanics. It is the reason for the simplified dialogue system.
Slow weapons are absolutely terrible with the current combat system. Fighting a single ghoul is pain enough trying to time your swing (since you cant hold an attack and the swing speed is ridiculous), mand as soon as you get hit you lose your attack.

Except it didn't really make me care at all. Same as in Fallout 3, the family thing is forced. I've been with these people for ten minutes and I'm supposed to seriously care about them just because I'm told they matter? It's just weak storytelling. I've played JRPGs with more buildup and emotion. It would have been cancerous for roleplaying, but a much longer intro sequence where you actually get attached to your family instead of being told you should.
Also you can barely even see the baby Shaun model because it's a poorly done, low poly, unanimated piece of shit. It looks like a little potato. If limitations wouldn't allow for a quality cute looking newborn, they should have made him older. I'd care more about muh Shaun if I saw him at the start as a cute toddler.
I agree, the voiced protagonist wasn't actually the problem, it just led to the problem. If they managed to have a voiced protagonist as well as the dialogue possibilities of 3/NV then that would be outstanding. But having a voiced protagonist will undoubtedly lead to time and bugdet constraints, so the dialogue would suffer, and I'd rather good dialogue option over voiced a protagonist.

That way the SS (character, not player) is not as attached as a fucking parent-son relationship. And it allows for easier and better roleplaying.

Todd Howard is a literal genius. I don't know he does it to be honest. When he walked out on to that stage at E3, he had the entire crowd eating out of his hands. This man is the Donald Trump of gaming, he can say whatever the fuck he wants, no matter how untrue and preposterous, and people will eat it up. He's lied through his teeth about Oblivion, Skyrim, Fallout 3 and now Fallout 4, but if he walked out on that stage to present Fallout 5 at E3 2022, everybody would forget it and the hype train will be going at 150mph.

You could climb that mountain, NPCs did have a day/night cycle and could call the guards even when they were in a different cell. Fallout 3 did have over 200 "endings" with those slide variations and Skyrim did have infinite quests even though they were shit.
So, since people have made mods that add in new weapons, does that mean that we could get mods to replace weapon models too?
Because I'm really looking forward to a M16 replacement for that dumbass assault rifle.

I really wish more people could admit that things they like are shit. I enjoy fallout. That being said it is a crappy game, it has a retardedly simple plot, the game offers you choice but the institute and brotherhood are effectively designated villains, the settlement system is crap, most of the companions are crap and several have no logical reason to follow the SS (mostly Piper), the modding system is lackluster, the dialogue wheel is retarded because beyond limiting choice it limits knowledge of what the fuck your character is going to say ("sarcastic" doesn't tell me shit, is that a yes or a no?), and finally the graphics while an improvement over New Vegas are still shitty compared to other AAA titles that have come out recently.

The only reason it sold so well is because it was stuffed with half finished gimmicks (eg. settlements and crafting), it is from a well known series, and it had a fairly large marketing campaign for a video game.

I wouldn't even have a problem with the graphics if the game was properly optimized, but load times are ridiculous and I still get textures popping in or just not loading all the fucking time.
I would rather have something akin to the tkb-022 or the EM-2. Although neither are American they fit the overall 50s scifi aesthetic much more than the M16 or the Maxim gun we currently have, a wood grip and stock bullpup rifle.
I honestly don't care for graphics too much but it honestly should have better graphics, Fallout 4 looks like a game from 2013. But yeah optimization is much worse, I have long load times and even though everything else looks fine and runs fine I get random lag spikes especially in Boston where the lag gets worse and worse until I have to quicksave, quit, and restart unless I want to play at 3 seconds per frame.
NV certainly has flaws (lacklustre armor choices outside of DLCs is one), but it makes up for its flaws because the rest of the game is still way better than both 3 and 4. As for FO2, I don't really care either way.
Why not an AR10, made in the 50s
Before I actually played FO4 I assumed that you made your character pre-war, went into the vault and then played as that character's descendant decades later when the vault re-opened, and it was just a coincidence that you happened to exactly resemble your grandfather or whatever. Then you run around the wasteland going I WANT MY SON BACK without having to have all the attached shit like having an established wife. I mean shit, he could even have been an adopted son if you wanted to be a confirmed bachelor about it.

It's the best out of the three Fallout games I've played. I find almost everything in New Vegas better than 3 and certainly better than 4. The fact that Obisidian made New Vegas and Bethesda made 3 and 4 is probably not just a coincidence.

This is the only reason ANYTHING by Bethesda sells. That's what sucks about their streamlining efforts: it's all been utterly pointless. Everything from MW onward has had exposure to thank for its success, not casualization.
Can anyone help? Recently been installing Fallout New Vegas. Everything is working relatively fine, but since I downloaded the huge texture mod, it recommended for me to use 4GB FNV mod. So I put that in, and I created a shortcut. I then added ' -laaexe .\FalloutNV4GB.exe ' to the end of the thing in the Target box, but ENB still doesn't work afterward.
Then when I try running it in Admin mode, it crashes on boot.
There's nothing wrong with the assault rifle. Might look a bit more like 30s scifi than 50s scifi but fits more than some tacticooled M4 and looks a hell of a lot better to boot.
