Yeah, whatever.
>>128416089
Made a shitty amulet out of it.
Ive played enough for today.
Remember that damaging brand choice is literally irrelevant in a 3-rune game, unless it's venom.
>>128416008
Probably Hasty Ninja, either Klackon, Sprite, Centaur, or Demigod of Hermes.
Hasty is +2 right off the bat, Ninja is +3 and an extra +1 per 10 levels, and any of those races also gets +1 speed per 10 levels.
That's only +15 speed by level 50, though.
Ninja is only a total +8 so classes with temporary +10 speed buffs can become temporarily faster.
And if you really want to reach maximum speed you can play a monster race with lots of ring slots, or maybe grind for a billion boots of speed on a centipede.
>>128416325
Yeah IIRC reforging into lights is not a good idea cause it cuts the power in half or something like that
>>128417802
Reforging always cuts the power in half.
>>128417948
back in the good days before 3.5 you could reforge up to 500.000 $ worth of useless artefacts, which gave you 250 K reforges.

Give me some Sil tips for slightly past early game - I've read the pastebin.
Now that 1.3 is out I can make it past Orc Warriors to around 250-300 before I get whacked.
What are the best abilities to buy in each category? I got a feeling half of them aren't very useful and some are must-picks.
>>128424562
You should pump melee and evasion early on. You could get charge or sprint for starting
Also I feel bad I just splatted a stealth char just after finding the short sword of Amrod that give bonus to stealth
>>128424562
Google silstreamer on youtube. He has quite a few good videos of commentary on other people's Sil runs and explains why they do a lot of what they do.
As anon said, a good strategy is to just level melee/EV early.
Dodging/Flanking is a really easy to use pair of abilities that makes combat positioning much easier and lets you crowdclear like crazy.
>>128424683
>>128424860
Any use for Song early on in the game? Out of my 15 games or so in Sil, I never ever got to touch it
>>128424562
How do you end up dying?
>>128424075

>>128425087
I usually get 5 Song around 600 ft or so for Song of Trees and then don't touch it until the end game for Slaying/Sharpness. You don't need to worry about it until late midgame.
>>128425535

I think even the people here who are playing it hate it.
>>128424562
dodging, flanking, melee, evasion
>>128426337
So I take it Sil isn't quite the RL with a wide variety of builds
>>128425682
Read >>128424075, i can't pick it up even while naked
Maybe throwing holy water at it will work?
>Implying i'd find an oilskin without resorting to massive polypiling
>>128426816
eh, it's not that surprising that you should have a reliable way to kill dudes (melee or archery with melee support - with defenses strong enough to survive the most noble 1v1 or 2v1 battle) or have a way to avoid dudes (overwhelming stealth with singing support)
If you have neither then I dont know what you expect to do when something remotely dangerous spots you...
>>128426816
It has a wide variety.
It's just that for beginners, the easiest method is brute force killdudes.
>>128426167
Quest of the unicorn
It's an incredible game with lots of history and items and an interesting location system but holy shit
it's so bad to play
so so bad
it's like the dev made it like this on purpose BUT THERE ARE SO MANY INTERESTING THINGS
basically you just want to play for the loot drops.
>>128426915
Well that didn't work, but at least i managed to remove enough stuff from it to be able to lift it and bless it again
Still mad about losing frostbrand, who the hell thought item curses were fun
That's a lot of orcs.
Lagduf and Azog have decided to join forces against me.
Does throwing potions in Sil do anything?
Ooooh I want it! I hope it's something good.
>>128428324

>>128428768
Oh well, I was hoping for some magical artefact. More light is always good I guess.
>>128414332
i'm disappoint in sil
this game randomly put me into an impossible situation which roguelikes shouldn't do
poor girl was so young, just 64 y.o... she ate everything, quaffed everything and died searching the walls [by resting near them as i gather it should work] till the last breath... were she escape (and find food) at the last moments, the minimal depth of 700 (btw it means that this depth counter is turn-bound not exp-bound) would effectively kill her anyway
also, how do you remove curse in sil except by a certain ability?
>>128429784
Did you try to bash or tunnel into the walls?
Tunneling into a secret door automatically detects it in my experience.
>>128429784
Well next time try to put some points in perception.
>>128428919
Well there's nothing so Ill assume it doesnt do anything til I find a worm to test it
All this drain. I feel like this game wasn't really designed with ironman_down in mind.
>>128422294
>nobody answered Vine Stalker Fighter
Don't let the small HP pool fool you, the intrinsic spirit shield and ridiculous regeneration more than makes up for it. Once you get plate and fill your aux slots you'll become pic related, doubling as wolverine between fights.

>>128430349
tunnelling needs a mattock or something, baching doesn't work if you didn't find a door
>>128430382
i tried a random build found on this thread which suggested to take evasion and dodge and didn't bother with perception-_-
>>128431364
eh... well ty
>>128431881
How did you fall down there anyway?
Well now you know that if you have more than enough melee/evasion you can save some XP to invest in utility!
>>128431881
>didn't bother with perception
it's a good idea to drop some points into that
you can get three levels in it for just 600xp, and three grace brings that to six, which is good enough and gets you access to keen senses
perception and will are sort of like the secondary attack and defense skills respectively, and you should be pumping those up slowly in addition to melee and evasion, even if it's only a few points here and there
What exactly do I need to get a silmaril as a stealth dude? Song of sharpness right? But how high should my song skill be?
>>128432592
song of sneakyness

All right I didnt try exchange place, I realized that he doesnt have a breath so I just lured him and with my boots of speed I was able to grab Angrist before he came back to sleep on his treasures
>>128433697
For a stealthy sil win you need the song that puts things to sleep. If you sing it well enough, morgoth will fall to sleep and the crown will fall off his head so you can hit it with Angrist and take a sil.
>>128434989
Yeah I know the basic for it, I already have Lorien. So with Angrist I have everything I need? Any advice on where I should I put my xp now? My previous best attempts ended at 850 ft
>>128435281
dumping a few points into melee wouldn't hurt
>>128435281
I'm not sure how good your singing needs to be to pull it off. Normally characters want a bunch more will to avoid Morgoth's slowing song, not sure if that will matter for this character or not since I haven't personally run or watched a stealth win yet...I'm not sure if Morgy will wake up for the chase during the ascent singing at you. But if he does wake up, you need 28 will (more likely 18 + FA or 8 + double FA) to be immune to his slowing song.
Also a staff of revelations would be ideal to help the ascent though it's not actually necessary.
You could try asking for advice in the ##sil irc channel, they have some much more experienced players. Especially if you post a chardump on oook for them to look at and then ask ##sil to look at it and advise.

Well I think I'll stop for now. This is getting pretty stressful- still no restoration.
I've managed to become effectively polymorphed from a mighty high elven warrior to a trashy edain tourist.
It's real survival though, I never though I would be so glad to have a scant 2 scrolls of teleport and a few potions of speed. Ironman kinda works in FAAngand since there are so many dungeons which you can descend in order in Hybrid mode.

In DCSS or maybe Angband it's not the worst thing you can do
In a lot of other games it will really ruin your day
oh hey
these guys are new
Int or dex for a demigod transmuter?
Okay so I started PCB today, and there are few things aren't in the help files.
How do I get past rubble and walls with treasure? (tried searching around them for hidden doors as the newbie guide says but to no avail)
Do I walk slower while searching?
Can I make food out of monster corpses or I just have to rely on what I buy/find?
I can't read scrolls, is that because I'm a dumb berserker or can I learn that later on?
>>128439306
So how do you do it. I'm in dcss, and that's how I've been playing thus far.
The worst thing that happened was some bad mutation.
>>128439306
In DCSS you want to read-ID Identify scrolls, then ID your panic button consumables before read-IDing anything else if possible and only read-ID stacks in case you get into shit.
In Angband you get so much ID from scrolls, staves, or other sources that use-ID is almost unheard-of.
All right, Ill stop looking for loot and go down. I find the deeper parts are actually easier than the middle for a stealthy build, because I usually die to the numerous orc patrols. This one had to dive a shaft 2 times so she is lucky.
>>128439556
Berserkers in PCB can't use any devices except potions. This includes scrolls.
You buy food. You can also buy dinner at the inn. It's cheap.
Just use the wait key to search.
Ctrl+Direction burrows through walls. Since you are a zerker you can probably burrow pretty fast.
>>128439642
Good luck mate.
I'm not sure if this is still the case, but I think stealing the Sil breaks tension, so make sure that things are asleep on your escape route. Probably all of that XP can go into song.
>>128439793

>>128439556
use the tunnel command to dig through rubble or rock or veins of treasure. Harder material takes more turns to dig through or may be impossible to dig, depending on your strength and the tunelling or sharpness level of whatever you're wielding to dig with
?k should bring you to the commands list. I use the roguelike_mode keyset option and don't remember what the standard dig command key is.
>>128441423

>>128441704

>>128441331
Just carry it in your hands. Empty it first, if it's too heavy. You can set up a funnel on top of it back home, for near-infinite water.
>>128439556
>Can I make food out of monster corpses or I just have to rely on what I buy/find?
if you play monster demon you are forced to eat humanoid corpses... the tavern and the grocery shop won't sell you *that* meal!
some races also eat flasks of oil or wand charges
ordinary food isn't a problem at all, it's dirt cheap and plenty, you just regularly eat in the tavern and keep some snacks for traveling... quaffing potions give some nutrition if you manage to screw it up and end in the wilderness without food
on a side note, no teleport will likely end your zerker killed... play warrior for an easy all rounded melee class
>>128439556
Zerkers are bad to learn how to play the game, they lose mileage pretty fast. Play an android rune knight instead, which is an incredibly overpowered and exploity combothat still isn't enough to make you win the game though, the guide is at the bottom the poschengband pasta
I've sure had luck with jewelry this run.
>>128440874
Holy shit I may die here if they dont hurry the fuck up to the stairs
>>128438927
>Also I can't think of a single roguelike where that is an optimal ID strategy
use-id is very common in dcss
read-id till you find an id scroll is the go-to strategy in adom
use-id seems pretty common in sil too (btw, does identifying items with lore master give you exp?)
>>128442839
those stats look too good for an edain
>>128442279
>>128442540
I don't think recommending a specific class for Poschengband newbies is a great idea, since it's more important to just pick what looks fun for you. If he's enjoying Berserker then more power to him. Part of why the game is so fun is that it has a billion class/races to pick from.
Also starting with rune knight exploit is a fucking terrible idea. You're satan.

>>128442948
This is an elf thats why, I put my pride aside cause I wanted a win
desu reaching lvl 50 isn't the hard part of poschengband, adroid or not (also isn't filling all the resistance holes a royal pain for an android)
killing the snake is the hard part
i really hate it when the roguelike makes a very hard boss fight as the only means to win the game
>>128442939
Use-id happens in most roguelikes, but "just picking them up and using them as [you] find them" is not ideal in pretty much every one.
Yes, loremaster gives XP. If you want to speedrun a morgoth kill- for example, you will probably take loremaster since it's actually the fastest way to gain XP.

in dcss read id is 100% safe, the only scrolls that can fuck you are torment and vulnerability but are completely harmless without enemies around so you just have to wait out their effects
quaff id can be annoying because of mutations and pot of degeneration (if you're a caster getting a int drop or caster unfriendly mutation, tabbers won't notice stats drop ever unless it's something massive as -10 that i think can't happen with a single degen potion)
equip id once you have remove curse scrolls ranges from safe (cursed -X stuff) to annoying (drain on unequip in mid/late game) and chance of rape (chance of banish on unequip)
however when you reach the point where drain can be an issue and you'd be mad to splat you'll be sitting on tons of identify scrolls so there will be no risk
Lugonu really makes the early game easier.

It means most of the advice in the short pasta is invalid, since the pasta assumes you are playing with wilderness on.
The advice about consumables to carry with you still stands, but you can't follow the walkthrough-style guide, since you don't have any of those dungeons to quest to.

How is it not guaranteed? It's a god power, with a very low fail chance to boot.
watching hjklyubn termcasting retaking the lead of the poschengband christmas competition, trying to fight santa, when suddenly...
He's still alive, though he had to abandon the gear. Fortunately for him, he's already got the most uniques killed, though it seems like there's some bug mis-sorting him on the ladder as 2nd place, which should get sorted out.
Nice try by Exo (I think from /rlg) to try and snipe the lead with posting a first-place chardump a few days ago for the first time, with 18 hours played. Verrrrry dishonoraburu that was, denying the information to the other contenders. Well, Exo died and it looks like rwbarton should take this comp unless somebody else pulls a similar snipe.
>>128445702
Well uh that last level was underwhelming, only things in my way were traps.
First Sil win! Pretty standard melee build. I would have tried for a second silmaril but 0 herbs of rage when I got to the throne room so slaying only got to around +11 and I just went for the win.
>>128445859
It's not guaranteed to put you out of danger. It's a blink. It won't save you from ranged monsters (except maybe it will, but it's really random). It can land you next to a melee enemy you were trying to run away from. It can land you further in the unexplored territory. It probably won't help vs. ranged enemies. It damages you, which is not a positive thing, yes.
>>128445993

>>128448342
hah nice shot
Yeah it was a santa comp. It was fairly fun, though there was a bug. To make the comp savefile, the comp organizer had to debug-mode the character up to high enough level to wear the corpse, then debug-mode him back to level 1. But he kept the level ~45 experience penalty or whatever so leveling up was stupidly annoying.
Fortunately this comp was evaluated by uniques killed (if nobody won the game that is), so the level penalty was less important. It's still why I stopped after my first session of play though. There's enough 30-50 exp grind in PCB without starting with those penalties at level 1.
>>128446328
You do realize the most common spell in the game is also called 'blink', doesn't cost health, and takes 5 seconds of training to get to low fail rate?
Unless you're playing a formicid or wearing CPA with 5 int, Lugonu's blink is not praiseworthy.
Apparently I can throw silver chariot just far enough to hit this thing out of his sight range.I'm not sure why, considering it is the heaviest of my two rapiers, but who knows.

How good is angrist? Do I have to ID every fucking dagger or what?
I had a stealth archer build that took on the order of 100 tries (while using all my stat buff potions) to get the first sil off with a greatsword of melee humans (because the short sword I was using was not doing nearly enough damage), and the entire time Morgoth used ESP to kill my stealth, dug through walls and slowed me to fuck up my sprinting pillar dancing, and locked doors (which I had to burst with a freedom staff).
>>128451796
Angrist is not an OP weapon, but it has the sharpness property that lets it pierce armor. That's very useful in general, and specifically very useful when silcutting because of how thick the crown armor is.
To cut a sil, you need to do damage against [+0, 15d4] defenses for the first Sil, 25d4 for the second, and 30d4 for the 3rd. On either the 2nd or 3rd sil, your wielded weapon will break.

their real downside is that they can't be monks or rune knights. Healing sucks against the serpent, so hell need to grind for *healing without the conga (good luck grinding arena 80 with the babble around)

PCB? You can zap a pet with it and suddenly have 2 pets, which is exactly what you'd expect it to do.
You could summon an army of clones, or make a backup copy of your trusty steed to keep in a capture ball in case it dies.

I never got into sil because the character creation had too much fiddly adjusting stats. I guess it gets better when you're used to the game and you just know what build you want to do, but when you're new to the game it's more effort than I'd like to make a new character after a splat.
>>128482197
Well go kill hounds above Outpost first and then dragons in the mountains.
Much faster than grinding dungeons.
>>128482389
>Well go kill hounds above Outpost first
I'm not familiar with this strategy. Where are the hounds exactly? The wilderness?
>>128482056
The whole point is that "roguelike" as it's used today has very little meaning as a singular genre
He pretty implicitly says they aren't roguelikes in the stricter sense of the word
So in ADom I'm picking up strange resistances as intrinsics, 99% certain that I haven't eaten anything to give me these, but I've got petrification and death resistance intrinsic (what would even give me this?) and quite a few others. This has happened multiple times this game, it fees like everytime that I cast revelation to check, I've gotten another one in the interim somehow.
>>128482197
>I'll probably start cloning ancient red dragons or something.
do you get fire immunity or something? also, remember to put "clone" in your autopickup before you autodestroy it.
Powereleveling a thing with HP shittier than a yeek that does not have acid immunity like a yeek and that levels four times slower than a yeek is a problem.
Hounds, I guess? keep going up and down the main staircase in the forest and hope for light/shadow hounds mobs. That should bump you a few level, but your horrible xp penalty will make this thing impossible soon.
I wish cloning was more common, holy shit. Always check the black market to see if they're carrying a wand of cloning.

>What do people do then if they don't get to at least ~25 with killing hounds and shit, then finishing Orc, Angband 12 and getting the rod of recall and then killing dragons until 35-40?
nothing. That is the most optimal way of leveling up.
>>128477345
yeah bragging rights and the fact that they are actually very strong. Note for example that combined they give immunity to the three elements that the serpent has auras of.
Ideally you get The Stick of Halfheart from Morgoth and use it against the Serpent (and everything else), without having to fight the other two before winning.

It's good if you are a clubmaster and want hephaestus's hammer eventually. Otherwise I don't think he's all that useful compared to the other choices.
>>128484832
woops, meant weaponsmith
Can't decide on my weapon /rlg/
+23 to hit, damage for 8d5+5 (Big Punch w/ level 1 in maces)
or
+42 to hit, damage for 3d6+24 (Rolf's Companion w/ level 10 in axes and the shield bonus)
Dwarven Priest, so catching up the maces level won't be awful, but hardly super easy at this point either.
I'll be using the Rolf Shield for now regardless of the choice, but staying with the axe kind of commits me to the shield too.
I'm kind of invested in the Axe though simply because it let me two-shot the greater daemon.
>>128484817

hmm it's still okay, IIRC you'll get disenchantment resistance which is nice. Demigods are usually pretty solid, with the obvious downside of a large exp penalty.
>>128485037
a lot of that will depend on how many blows per round you end up getting wit each. Big Punch is very heavy so you may not be able to swing it many times per turn without super high str/dex.

i have a demigod of artemis archer who killed oberon in pcb but didn't dare to approach the serpent, she's alive and parked for more than a year too.. 99th lvl of angband;

Tough choice desu. I opt out of crowd fighting because you never really have to fight surrounded, especially if you have exchange places in the first place. Sprinting lets you escape from quick monsters you can't handle without dying (e.g. wargs). I usually keep enough exp to get either of them, and then when I need one over the other to survive I'll purchase that immediately. Also don't forget leaping, especially if you have ranged weaponry to pelt niggas from afar. Leaping is fucking amazing
Eligibility for the rage mage's "detect magical foes" is apparently something other than "casts spells", which is a bit weird. But it doesn't catch apprentice mindcrafters at all.
>>128507450
i already picked both, exchange positions first because you never really have to fight surrounded, especially if you have exchange places
> I opt out of crowd fighting because you never really have to fight surrounded, especially if you have exchange places
hm, an interesting idea to pick exchange positions through disguise not thought crowd fighting, it saves some xp... albeit not that much
[flanking, dodging] crowd fighting (1500 xp) sprinting (2000 xp) exchange positions (500 xp) = 4000 xp
vs
disguise (500 xp) exchange positions (1000 xp) [flanking, dodging] sprinting (1500) = 3000 xp
but then, being semi-surrounded is pretty common too
by the way, how much melee and evasion do you need to reliably wreck shit on 550'? that lesser balrog unique was nasty, only exchange positions and sprinting saved me... i have 11 melee 10 evasion right now
>i already picked both, exchange positions first
disregard the mis-paste after this part of the line
>>128509785
I mostly play Edain stabbers and pure archers, and on those types of characters getting out of melee or being able to reset the monster's awareness for another stab is really good. But for a flanker build I'm sure crowd fighting is very useful and necessary, likely better than exchange positions since exchange positions only applies to certain edge cases whereas crowd fighting will help your build all the time.

Wearing heavy armor at the expense of EV isn't necessarily the best idea, even for archers. if it gets truly bad there is always the unicorn quest (people usually save to win uncorrupted)
my first win was in 129 days as n+
my longest win was in 140 days as l+
i think i never really cared to be very fast and spent a lot of time hunting&milking barbarian parties for arrows and with my longest win doing some silly things all around the world
>>128512290
Wield a large dice weapon like a greatsword, or a battle axe/bastard sword two-handed to get through their protection. Fight them in corridors unless you have Zone of Control. Don't let them flank you.
>The curious quest to try and build japanese alternative crawl continues
>>128514018
p.s. acw is easy to be killed, actually sometimes it's retardedly easy, like 2-3 shots
the ordinary way it's slaying arrows and a bow or any weapon of demon/dragon slaying but you can use a poison wand or a lot of other ways... throwing !cure corruption, acid ball, damn even an overpowered pet (read a scroll of pet acquiring in the small cave, lol, and level it a bit then)
you need fireproof blanket and several sources of fire resist... check the default adom spoiler or its wiki
also don't you have the guaranteed wand of teleport already

If you're getting errors because he's not declaring variables then I don't think nCurses will help much with that. Are you fixing his code yourself?
>>128519562
Read the manual.
>>128519562
As many as you like, but you only really need one or two. Each source of resistance reduces pure elemental damage like breath by 1/(n+1), where n is the number of sources of resistance, and prevents mixed elemental damage like damage from an Ururauko from getting an extra damage die. You only need 1 source of resistance to resist mixed damage.
By the way this is all in the manual so read the fucking manual.
>>128519562
Checked the manual and for mixed elemental damage one level of resist provides same protection higher levels of resist, while for elemental breaths damage is multiplied by 1/(1+resist_level)
I guess I'll have to keep these motherfuckers in mind next time.

How2 cavarly in PCB?
Can you mount the serpent of chaos?
Do that.
>>128521492
I know you want to buy a pokeball early so you don't have to rely on low-level rodeo. Other than that... no clue.
>>128521892
Ill mount you bby ;)
>>128521892
i dunno...
btw afaik you can turn into the serpent of chaos if you play mimic
but then it will likely make you lose since you will drop most of the equipment and won't have nowhere near as much hp as he (iirc the serpent is male) has
On a related note: apparently dragon warlocks get a spell at level 35 to force their mount to use its breath attack.
Riding a wyrm and getting a 1600-damage breath every turn seems really good.
Although you'd eventually want one that breathes higher elements, like a wyrm of chaos or law..
it seems the only heavy rider winner on the ladder it's beastmaster...
>>128523267
And it looks like the ladder has 0 winners for ANY warlock subclass, and only one (an undead warlock) that got to level 50.
I fucking hate elves so much
>>128523126
They also get a spell to force ALL their pets to breathe, it looks pretty fun
>>128523771
well, they are simply not popular
like archers have only one winner and it's a crazy powerful class
warlocks are inherited from chengband and its ladder has 2 warlock wins
>>128523862
But each pet that they're not riding has a 1-in-2 chance to disappear forever, if I'm reading it correctly.
Although that's not a huge loss if you saddle something that has Summon Ancient Dragons.

Guess I'll have to Disintegrate him.
>>128527453
Spam summon Monsters until you get a babble then clone it as many times as you can sustain and let them loose on levels.
Or is it just titans and their Summon Kin can get babbles?
how do you scum a level in sil? it seems some people report that they do it, but i don't get how, leaving aside food, you cannot reset a level more than few times and the mob respawning doesn't seem that good... on top of that if you spend a lot of turns you will likely get in a problem when you eventually leave that level
to be fair i begin to feel that killdudes isn't the easiest way to win
>>128527978
Stealth is probably the fastest and easiest way to win Sil
>>128527978
Don't level scum early in the game it's not worth it. Proceed normally to 950 ft then scum there. And yeah stealth is probably easier than melee.
How good is eye-for-an-eye? My shieldmaster has to choose between dual shields for more damage or this sword, which lets me use eye-for-an-eye instead of shield bashing as his toggle.
It also has telepathy so I can swap jack of shadows for something with more resists, but either way I at least single-resist everything.

Nevermind faulted. I fatfingered a key or something and just hit a shambler in the face instead of zapping tele other right after it breathed two turns in a row onto my only-50%-elec-resist ass.
Is it possible to kill Morgoth with arrows? I mean I feel like you'd need ridiculously high song and use rare pierce arrows to ignore his armor, while also stacking huge amounts of crits or something to cut down on his hp. I'm just not doing enough damage to him fast enough
So after some 4 splats or so in my how2cavarly en-devour i hit a brick wall from what ive gathered so far from a archived rlg post demigods of aphrodite can charm things and ride them but this doesn't seem to work(atempting to ride simply gives that is not a pet response) and i splat as soon as my horse dies. From the same post ive read that a 2 headed hydra is a good mount but whats a good way to get one without getting destroyed by said hydra or hounds?

I've never ascended an Edain but I don't see why you'd need Loremaster on any character, other than to avoid the annoying ID minigame. Perception has some great abilities that will hlep your survival that aren't the lore abilities, and getting everything will cost a ton of exp.

When I was playing diablo 2 as a kid a friend who couldn't enjoy the game for shit because he firmly believed he had to give himself infinite gold on every character in A1, because he could technically just kill zombies forever and get it legit anyway. Man, modding PCB is a lot more confusing than I thought it'd be.
I tried to add a
> # Wand: Clone Monster
?:[AND [EQU $QUEST1 3] [EQU $RACE Yeek] ]
F:b:BUILDING_1:3:0:0:0:0:NONE:32
F:!:FLOOR:3:0:97
in the quest rewards file which is t_lite but I still keep getting the "appropriate" reward for my class.
>>128459678
>>128495472
I just almost died of starvation in PCB. I thought word of recall would take me back to town but it only too me to the surface of the dungeon. I ended up quaffing like 20 potions to survive.
>>128536716
Recall will take you back to town once you recall into the dungeon from the town.
It always takes you to where you were last on the surface. And since I guess you entered the dungeon for the first time, it just took you outside.
>>128535380
Spears > Ruks
Fighting giants is always a nice break for me, it's always a throwing contest without any melee combat
Man this is getting me mad, nothing I do seems to work. I tried to swap a regular thieves quest drop for monks, pair of gauntlets, to a broad spear, which is a cavalry drop.
Original cavalry drop is coded in
# Broad Spear
?:[AND [EQU $QUEST1 3] [EQU $CLASS Beastmaster Cavalry] ]
F:b:BUILDING_1:3:0:0:0:0:NONE:32
F:!:FLOOR:3:0:543
So I just copy that and write this
# Broad Spear
?:[AND [EQU $QUEST1 3] [EQU $CLASS Monk Force-Trainer Mystic] ]
F:b:BUILDING_1:3:0:0:0:0:NONE:32
F:!:FLOOR:3:0:543
Basically all I did was just change the name from # Gauntlets to # Broad Spear while adjusting the F:b:Building and F:!:FLOOR parameters (which I have absolutely no idea what they could mean other than building and floor what is the hell is that string of numbers) of the monk to the cavalry.
Nothing.
I still get a pair of gauntlets even if I have completely removed that from the t_lite file.
That makes me think that the reward must be somehow hardcoded because if I have removed that line, how could the game know what was the "right" reward for a monk?
I am so confused.

He must be taking it easy today.

Have fun.
I guess I could play frozen depths or forays to norrendin. I already played every roguelike I like to death.I could actually get a hobbySomehow I always end up here
I wish Caves of Qud would ever get an update so I could justify playing a few more hours of esper.I wish someone would post the new paid URW release so I could be a viking slaying russians and starving again.
Darren Grey once again trying his best to coast roguelikes into the roguelikes genera.

why are you linking me to reddit
why are you shitposting
>>128557658
If there's something I learned from DDA and anon made me understand even better is that omeosthasis games only make you feel more dead inside when you get good
I wish URW would get all of the planned features added so I couldmake the comfiest cabin in the woods and get married to a big strong kaumo man, have children and live happily ever after

Anon I'm not seeing any cyberdemons and Bloodthirsters in this screenshot.
Bloodletters don't matter, Byakhees don't matter, formless spawns don't matter, they're all 1-hit shits.
Lesser hell beasts maybe as well.
With great stealth though, comes great "i don't give a shit about any of this i will pull everything one by one"ility.

Darren Grey is the guy who runs roguelike radio
He's pretty keen on expanding the definition of roguelike to include games like spelunky
He's a very dishonest debater who likes to doublespeak in my opinion, from reading a lot of his blogposts.
I linked that comment thread because the Totalbiscuit video the post is about was linked and commented on earlier on rlg and because there was some gems like
"You're simply wrong on this. There aren't even that many Unity-based games with procedural generation (it's tricky to do in Unity). You can't be arsed to do proper research because you'd rather cling to a myth to spew frustration over.
The mis-use of the roguelike term is mostly by the media and players. Most developers don't go beyond calling their game "with roguelike elements", which I find innocuous enough." - DG

It breeds explosively.
One of the things mostly unique to *bands.

how so? I thought this was a reasonable response.

He's also pretty good at roguelikes (the ones discussed ITT). Except Brogue, apparently. His only would-be win was negated over lava when he was ascending with the amulet.
>>128559827
>Binding of Isaac has pretty crappy randomized levels
What the hell man. Unless he's talking about the layout of the levels (could be possible, since the actual rooms aren't randomized) that's quite the opinion.

I will never.

He's like a fat Aaron Paul
>>128557139
Just make your own roguelike game, anon. That's a hobby in a narrow sense.
>>128559827
I just find him absurdly snarky and in possession of a somewhat holier-than-thou attitude.
This blog is an example - http://www.gamesofgrey.com/blog/?p=403
"The problem with the Berlin Interpretation is a problem with definitions in general. Firstly, a definition is only as good as its use in general conversation. The terms “decimate” and “role-playing game” no longer hold their literal meaning, and neither does “roguelike”. Meanings and context change over time, and in the five years since the Interpretation was written there have been many changes in the roguelike scene, with novel 7DRLs and indie roguelikes stretching the genre into new and unforeseen areas. It’s out of date and out of touch with modern roguelikes. All definitions are doomed to end up like this. Those who insist on sticking to the rules are like annoying grammar pedants who spend more time arguing about English than having real social conversations. By analogy those who argue over the Berlin Interpretation aren’t playing enough modern roguelikes."
I suppose we just need to play more spelunky to see the light.
>>128559410
okay anon I want you to stop and think
why do you care so much about e-celebs
is your life getting better from following the obtuse machination of another silly person
are you enjoying your anger
>>128562262
>mfw /rlg/ didn't like the berlin interpretation for being too open ended and pointless so we made our own after much arguing
>mfw fat faggot on the internet gets told by the pasta
2. What makes a game a roguelike?
The definition of roguelike is dependent on a number of factors, as described in the often cited Berlin Interpretation [http://roguebasin.roguelikedevelopment.org/index.php?title=Berlin_Interpretation].
However, the broad nature of the Berlin Interpretation allows many games not traditionally considered to be roguelikes to be categorized as such, so stricter definitions of what qualifies as a roguelike have been adopted by various communities. Currently, one of the most accepted interpretations on /vg/ is that a game is a roguelike if and only if it has these 4 elements:
Permadeath - Might be optional or have ways to cheat (eg. Wizard mode), but it has to be a core element of the game.
Turn Based - Roguelikes are about thinking, not about quick reflexes.
Grid Based - Everything happens in a grid, where every element of the game use a set space, usually one tile, although some games have multi-tiled monsters or structures.
Randomly generated content - Since (perma)death is so common in roguelikes, every new game has to be different to keep the gameplay from becoming repetitive.
alan rickman fucking died
why is 2016 so shit, fuck
gonna play a wizard now

>He's a very dishonest debater who likes to doublespeak in my opinion, from reading a lot of his blogposts.
Do you have any counterargument against him, or did he just trigger the conspiracy nut part of your brain?
>>128536601
Yeah, I'm pretty sure quest rewards are actually defined elsewhere by the game, because I tried editing the reward for Logrus Master to fix the SOFTWARE BUG thing and it didn't work.
>>128562759
Stop shitposting about yourself and eat a salad.
>>128562051
>Just make your own roguelike game, anon.
I actually started doing this as a project since I was curious about programming.
It's actually sort offun.
>>128562423
I'm just a little sad over the /r/roguelikes subredit. I've said so here before, but I used to post there quite a bit - there's just a lot of e-celebs like the cogmind dev and DG there now. Along with dozens of posts about getting into roguelike being met with "play FTL". I guess I just take some of the powerless frustration that come with seeing a genera you love being so corrupted out with small posts like these last ones. Sorry if you feel it's terribly out of place.
>>128562932
That kid may yet make it.
And like him, so may you.
>>128562936
>the cogmind dev
ew.
I wouldn't dream of sharing internet space with that freak.
Just try to forget about the bad places, you're in a safe haven now.
>>128562850
>everyone who disagrees with me is the person I hate
>opposition to a theorycrafting nerdling can be based entirely on his looks and his "snarky attitude"
>any request for rational argument is to be met with insults
This is why he has a podcast and you're stuck on an anime porn website circlejerking about the Berlin Interpretation.
>>128562936
i'm the same desu, when i first saw it i was surprised about it being okay-ish but for some time now it's just jerking it to whatever the celebs and dev shills say.
i actually had a dream last week where i was in a colosseum watching darren fight some guy dressed sort of like vega from street fighter who shouted things i didn't understand.
>>128563753
lol i was shitposting i'm not the guy you replied to darren.
>>128563881
I'm not DG, but thanks for admitting that you are a conspiracy nut who is unwilling to imagine multiple people being opposed to your degeneracy.
If you're sad about your roguelike subreddit then make it great again there, don't spill all this autism into the new thread.
>>128562936
Same, but mostly the forum celeb shit. Fuck the cogmind dev, man.
>>128564268
Why is it bad for developers to be admired? Do you want roguelike forums to be only about well-established games whose developers have disappeared?
>>128563753
I'm not that guy you replied to. I haven't saved any excerpts so I can't give examples, no. Try his blog or post history if you're really interested. It's just my opinion.
New:

I won't even bother with filtering this whole discussion just make a new thread and hope for redemption, you super butt
>>128563881
Vega's design is based on a matador.
Where the hell are you from that you can dream about a matador but not know what he is?
>>128563106
We're all gonna make it, brah.
>>128564524
Yes, I'm aware what Darren's opinion is, because he's gone to great lengths to disseminate it and the reasoning supporting it. If you refuse to present any reasoning that contradicts his, than all you're saying is basically "nuh uh". Why should I agree with you?
>>128564863
lol what i'm from south africa i've never seen any of this.
the colosseum had those red wooden walls like the picture.
what the fuck.
>>128564865
That's fucking great man.
Could replace the nike logo with something crawl-related though.
>>128565131
Hahaha what?
That wasn't a colosseum, it was a bullfighting arena, and the guy was a bullfighter. Nice dreams mayne.
>tfw mad cuz bad
My only two wins are MiBe. I've splatted thirty-eight Gargoyle EEs in a streak over the last few days. I haven't even got past lair.
What makes it worse is that three weeks ago I got 2 or 3 Gargoyle EEs decently far. I've regressed dramatically.
>>128567740
The worst part is now the early levels are just fucking choked with Gargoyle EE ghosts with disgustingly painful Stone Arrows and, worse, sometimes LRD.
>you shatter!
Christ.
Guize what is happening, my turncount keeps flashing green every second turn and this [2 turns] thing is spamming my messages.
Wat.
I know almost nothing about nethack, so.
>>128569295
You're burdened. You're taking 2 turns to move.
>>128570203
Ooooh. Make sense, durrrrrrrr.
Thanks.
