This. Remember people, show, don't tell. At the absolute most the only thing you should say is "hey, at least one of our characters are gay". Don't just state it outright - make allusions to it in the lore and promotional material. Subtle things that won't have any meaning unless you read between the lines. Do it for several characters too, leaving plenty of red herrings so people will speculate a bit. If done right, people will figure out if a certain character is gay or not all on their own, with him or her being seen as a richer character for it, and not reduced to some minority pandering twat.

The above really goes for any character trait that isn't essential to the story. Why people have to make such a big fucking deal about the sexuality of imaginary characters in a game about shooting people is beyond me.

It can be a rather big thing, but it depends on the person and where you grow up, I guess. You don't have to go far back in time before it was basically social suicide to be non-straight. Young people growing up now are among the first generation who are able to be open about their sexuality without the same heavy stigma that was attached to it, some which still remains. Calling it pandering to a minority is imo rather belittling at the best, although you don't have be really clever to notice token minorities used as a tool to come off as LGBT-friendly or as a way to say "well, here's a gay character so you can just shut up now about your so-called issues".
