RR is considered the weakest one. Pirate's Curse is the best, but i'd recommend starting with Shantae GBC and going release order.

Risky's Revenge is pretty underwhelming and probably the worst of the three, the original while fine by GBC standards is just slow, Pirate's Curse is pretty fucking sweet though, best one by far.

Haven't made up my mind about HGH yet, the gameplay is fine from what little the demo gives you but i'm not really super impressed, that's not to say i'm not gonna play the hell out of it, i did drop $250 on it.

I've loved the Shantae games. I did however pirate(as Risky would want me to) The Pirates Curse and its really good.

Just one problem though that made me quit playing. I got to the part right after you run through the forest and then have to find a wheel or something for the Rotty Wagon. But something happened to where I either missed a key item in the forest and can't go back without restarting the game.

There's an overarching story through all the games, not the deepest thing in the world, but if you want to really get all the references and plotlines and shit it's the best possible experience.

I just played the demo that kind anon posted earlier. I'm not sure I like the shift from larger areas made out of multiple screens to having everything in one big screen or "room". Depends on your tastes. Shovel Knight owes the most to Castlevania and Zelda 2. Shantae has more Sonic in its blood. Not a ton, but enough to distinguish it from Shovel Knight's pure NES lineage.

I tried both and only finished Shantae because I prefer that sort of faster, smoother platforming gameplay. You should pick the one that suits your tastes best.

same here. Shovel Knight just feels too slow and shovel bouncing off foes' heads is the optimal way of combat. Shantae on the other hand, has more variety in combat and feels more fluid and quick to me. bosses in Shantae also utilize what you learn during the level, in contrast to Shovel Knight's shovel bouncing spam fest. i'd recommend Pirate's Curse over Shovel Knight any day to be honest.
