The customization, can create some mad rosters and unique weapons. Weapons are dropped when a soldier is killed so you have to retrieve it along with it's unique modifications. The weapon is then passed on. It can even be named.
I'm also really looking forward to the gameplay changes. In Enemy Unknown, the combat was slow and methodical. You had to advance slowly until you "discovered" a pod, then you did everything you could to maintain a defensive line while you figured out your approach.
In XCOM 2, you're the aggressor and you can advance quickly while setting up ambushes. ADVENT also sends in dropships as reinforcements right on top of you. So basically you have to be way more aggressive rather than slow and cautious this time.

I never once saw a zombie turn into a 'lid during my first campaign in Enemy Within. The reason being that they just slowly lumbered towards me and got shot to pieces.
I wouldn't see why not. Grenadier replaces the rockets, so it will be a little different. Instead of wildly missing with an on-point direct rocket, you will no launch in an arch with grenades.
Friendly splash damage is in - that much is obvious. I doubt you can accidentally "shoot" your soldiers because of the mechanics of it, unless you directly target them for whatever reason.

The Faceless disguise themselves as civilians on terror missions and transform when you get too close to them. The only way to tell them apart from the real civvies are with battle scanners or by seeing if they run away when an alien gets close to them.

It looks and acts terrifying too.
On terror missions, there's now a minimum amount of civilians that you have to rescue, which means that you HAVE to approach them. Combined with the fact that you have only one way of telling fake civilians from real ones(and that's seeing if they run away from aliens or not), you will constantly be gambling whether a civilian is a squadwipe in disguise.
The best part? If you try to mob each civilian, and end your turn close to the faceless, he'll transform during his move and get a full turn, which is effectively a death sentence for one squad member.
Beagle went completely nuts on just one .ini file and changed the game drastically. Seeing as we're getting 50 gigs of assets, code access, etc, a remake of UFO Defense is just small time for what's possible.
It's the first game in a while where two different groups of people enjoy killing ayyliens together.

That's the number one thing I dislike right now about the game, you can't tell an enemies health from the very first glance. Sectopod has 30 health all on ONE bar. It just makes no sense.

Gene mods are so boring that I usually completely skip them. Its just a bland upgrade on a character.

However it is a bit dissapointing to see certain things are somewhat derivative of the original. Terror missions are a big example of this, they are basically the exact same except with the addition of minimum civs saved. No fatigue so again you can run uber squads with no consequence.
Maybe it was too much to hope for a mission where X-Com goes and blows up alien civilians or something, but it's also dissapointing to see that the game seems to basically follow the same formula of missions. Even the way research is laid out seems similar, with "skulljacking" aka, probably capturing, being one of the first objectives.
Also your troops 'breaking the glass' on advent laser bars seems to be a persistent bug that will go on launch.

Well to a certain extent. If you get wounded it will take the character out for a long while. I watched a vid of Legend difficulty where a trooper went to 1hp and had a whopping 39 day recovery time.

Now on this one I dont follow your logic. Yeah, terror missions are very similar, however otherwise missions seem like they've got the biggest upgrade. In XCOM2012 most of missions were "kill everything". This time almost every mission has an objective, sometimes a timer. You assassinate VIPs from Advent convoys, you destroy uplinks, disarm bombs, evacuate a VIP to a landing zone, etc.
I dont think they follow the formula at all.
In addition it's a really bizarre choice to have XCOM ballistic weapons doing nearly twice as much damage as advent weapons, which even on legendary seem to only do 3 damage on a hit.
XCOM magnetic weapons do over twice as much as the advent versions, this seems sort of a weird break in the worldbuilding vs. mechanics that didn't exist in EU/EW.
MECs are neat. They can't hide behind waist-high cover like normal soldiers can, though, they can only hide behind full-size shit that breaks line of sight entirely. Or one of their upgrades turns them into a mobile shieldwall for regular troops to hide behind
Half the gene mods were fairly useless and the other half were OP as fuck from what I remember. And you needed lots of Meld to make the mod squad.
Also gene modded soldiers look goofy--modding a soldier puts them into this bare-armed model. I guess they wanted to put in some new cosmetic options for genemodded, but did it in the laziest way.

You could get similar wound times in EU/EW but eventually projects cut down even the most grievous of wounds to a relatively short period.
I only gave terror missions as an example of being derivative because I think that they honestly didn't even need them. Terror missions didn't have to be in the game if they weren't going to mix it up like they did with all the other examples you've provided where they've done a great job keeping things more interesting.

In XCOM2012 you could ignore civvies but now you have to save them. But in addition you also have to be careful about them being hideous monsters.
I think terror missions will be the least interesting, but even then they are better than before.
As for the squad thing, you're right. I wish there was some incentive to mix things up like characters getting debuffs if you bring them on multiple missions in a row, and those debuffs disappearing over time.

That's balanced out with FAR longer bench time from wounds, and the aliens have a lot more tools to fuck you up with just in general. Not to say we don't ether, but I'm starting to feel it's more their ballgame then ours you know? That new unit, the Gatekeeper, is going to be hell if it's armor is like 2-3 with a sizable chunk of health due towards just how much damage it can do with that beam + the multi-zombie ordeal. Zombies in this game are not units you want to take lightly as one can easly whip you for like 8 health, and killing them is pointless as they'll just get back up till you defeat the source.
But yeah, it's pretty clear that XCOM 2 is just XCOM EU/EW with enhancements...and honestly I'm OK with that. The refinement overall is already leaning towards a far less bullshit ( how was I to know I couldn't see the fag from there? ) and far more dynamic ( squad wondering around the base, squard get's different little personalty quips and affects lached onto them under use ) experience as well. There's stuff I do wish they would fix ( the breaking glass when there is no glass, still able to 'see' past walls at times, pods spawning in area's they can't move out of ) but overall I enjoyed EU/EW, and I can already see myself loving this.
I kind of get the feeling they know their player base with this one, and are focusing more on just pandering to that niche who already know all about it instead of going for wider audiences.

I feel like the Advent in general are more a Riot squad then anything else? Sure, electric batons is pretty harsh, but none of their weapons directly scream "We want to kill you on sight". I think they are set more for 'stun' then direct slaughter...even if in turn they aren't able to acually cuff and capture your units directly ( or if they are, no one's showed this factor off yet ). In earnest they aren't much better off then the police in modern age. They have guns, but they aren't magnums or high powered assault rifles ether.

Seeing as how Firaxis is fully aware of the lessons learned from Long Dong, I'm kind of hoping that there will be more than three weapon tiers. Lasers (and/or pulse lasers) would fit perfectly in as a sidegrade to Gauss weapons or as the penultimate tier before plasma.

Newfoundland is pretty easy even with early-midgame tech. Even so it's easy to cheese in the very beginning.
Grenade the sharks and just use one soldier to trigger whale/airstrike, and double move on every turn back to the skyranger. The chrysalid AI will only ever dash into melee range, instead of trying to cut you off.
