>HD remake of Garnet's ass
...this is considered technically an HD remake right? The comparison photos between this and emulated have a pretty noticeable difference outside of the prerendered backgrounds. Which also look a bit sharper anyway.
If it used the original HD backgrounds that would really be something.
Hopefully it runs better than it did on PSX. But even though it's my favortie FF, I don't think I'll bother buying or playing it again. Happy for those who get to try it for the first time, though.
>...this is considered technically an HD remake right?
No, it isn't. A remake implies that they redid the entire game from scratch, not simply port it and bump the resolution a bit for textures.
Would you call the Steam versions of VII and VIII remakes?
sorry to disappoint you
>Not playing the original PSX classic on an emulator
>"B-BUT MUH HD TEXTURES!"
Yeah, enjoy your fucking high polygonal characters behind outdated prerendered backgrounds. It's literally the same game.
Im a little disappointed that they arent adding any content to this game. Not surprised, but I was hoping against hope that there would at least be some gbaff-style end dungeons or some more story for freya and amarant or something. That game was pretty barebones compared to 7 and 8. probably still gonna get it though.
It's a shame. The game would look so fucking gorgeous with those BGs.
Though they probably don't all exist anymore.
Its my favourite too, but every time I go to emulate it I intend to go for a 100% run.
Then I remember fucking everything is missable and I'd have to have a guide open all the time to get everything. Plus the timed special boss which I'd have to do another speedrun just to get.
I love the game but the missables are insane.
With the caveat that I am weird and did not own a console other than Ps2, I find it odd that a new Homeworld is coming out in a mere week but the only buzz on this board (aside from Rift) is pre-orders for FF9.
This is literally the first time I'm hearing about a new Homeworld. The last time I heard about the franchise was when Gearbox bought the rights.
Whats not to get, receive mail from one moogle, give mail to another. Unfortunately for you some moogles are permanently missable and some require backtracking before you can really do it easily. If you don't do the whole thing in the right order you can fuck up and never be able to deliver, thus missing out on the stuff you get for it.
At least the chocobo game you can do at the end of the game.
Not just gorgeous, it would be perfect, and without doubt the best version there could ever be. I can't comprehend why they would do anything else. And why wouldn't they exist anymore? Do you really think Square Enix throws stuff like that away? It seems they re-rendered everything for the FFX HD port for PS4.
>It seems they re-rendered everything for the FFX HD port for PS4.
Are you talking about the handful of pre-rendered backgrounds? Because those looked the same to me. Same with the FMVs.
Just got a pretty nice copy from a local shop. it will probably never actually see the inside of a console.
FFX everything was 3d basically, so it was easy. Square are notorious for not having any of the pure artwork assets for their older games.
>can play the game right now using fuckton of graphical filters of your choosing
>comes with quality of life features like saving anywhere
>it's all in 2.8gb
I'm all in for Smartphone generation to play good games but it's really not something to lose your heads over. Play it if you never did but it doesn't look like a port i would recommend. Just emulate the original.
Why buy it when you can play it on epsxe in HD???
Did you play it? They don't look the same at all.
Jesus christ how could they fuck up so bad. Deleting source material for your games, how can you be that terrible at thinking forward?
She was composed of cells from the fiercest fighters and strongest races in the universe by the brilliant doctor gero. And soon she will challenge all the other furry waifus in single combat to determine the fate of the planet.
>Did you play it? They don't look the same at all.
I did and they looked exactly the same to me. I mean, they even cropped the FMVs to fit 16:9 screens instead of re-rendering them at that ratio. I'm trying to look for comparisons but I can't.
>TFW there will never a remaster with high res backgrounds.
She'll never be impressed
People were talking about upscales in the last thread. Here's my attempt at improving over >>322944698.
Of course. Where do you think she gets all those extra spears for her trance?
This is the by far the most interesting looking FF-setting I've seen, judging by promo images. It's kinda like weeaboo Terry Pratchett, I love it.
Cool to finally get to play it, though it kinda comes out in Dragon's Dogma's shadow.
Holy shit. It's not even like it's just some shitty emulated port. The 3D frame rate is unlocked and the images are in higher rez. I buying the shit out of this.
>People getting exited to buy something in a month that they could download and play right now within minutes, for fucking free.
Meh. Kuja's a second-rate Dio. If anything he's more like Kylo Ren.
Kylo Ren is a fun character. Kuja is a fun character. Dio is a fun character. Why do we need to tier shit? I think we're veered off from the spirit of the original claims being made. I like this game's art direction.
It's not the same thing, bro. Besides, it's illegal.
Maybe it's just me, but the Steam screenshots look really sharp. I remember the game being a muddy pixel-mess, but this looks good and doesn't have the blurriness of the FFVIII port.
It's like 20 bucks brand new on Amazon, so it better be cheap on Steam.
>Kylo Ren is a fun character. Kuja is a fun character
Kylo Ren was cool for two minutes until he took off the helmet.
I like some Kuja.
>Kylo Ren was cool for two minutes until he took off the helmet.
This. As sooon as that helmet was off he was done. They could have Kylo kill the entire OT cast and that wouldn't save him.
At least Lucas kept Vader helm'd until the very end.
Kylo Ren was every basement dwelling edgelord's Mary Sue OC donut steel until he took off the mask and showed he had character beyond looking spooky and intimidating all his old high school bullies.
I replayed it only a few months ago. I only had two major gripes with it, the first being the combat speed, the second being that there is absolutely no way to turn off/decrease the random encounters or the random encounter rate. VI/VII/VIII/X all had ways to do so. With IX you're stuck with it the way it is, and combined with the slow combat speed it could be very annoying.
Otherwise it was still a great game overall.
The real villain of ff9 made kuja wrong as a joke.
Nobody in the bay transformers movies was cool.
A cool villain was the one thing ep vii was missing. The prequels have the sheeve and ff9 had bald christopher lee. the force awakens had kylo ren, voldemort, lame shiny beatrix, and a weasly
>plug my DS4 in to use to emulate this game
>Touchpad words as a mouse
Im still holding out hope for an appearance in one of the spinoffs.
>Deleting source material for your games, how can you be that terrible at thinking forward?
Ask Konami, they threw away the source code for all Silent Hill games and when it came time to pump out a trendy HD collection, they had to give the devs non-bugfixed builds, basically several months unpolished from the retail version
Final Fantasy 9 was the last "real" fairy tale.
What's even more retarded is that the Silent Hill collection was released after the Metal Gear collection. In case you don't know, the guys who worked on MGS HD used the original PS2 discs and reverse engineered them to make the new version. Konami could've just hired these guys again to do the same for Silent Hill.
That anon up above who said this was like a weaboo Terry Pratchett world wasn't wrong. I love it.
I'd also throw in Terry Gilliam, Labyrinth, Dark Crystal, Willow, and Neverending Story for extra 80s fantasy vibes this game gives off. It's too great.
Yeah, I agree.
I've never played FF9 past when you arrive at Lindblum, but it's my 18 year-old little brother's all-time favourite game (he played IX and I played VII.) I always said the game was almost unplayable for me due to how slow the battles were, but I always fucking adored the music and the design, so I'm super stoked to playing it on PC.
Will this version include the original high resolution backgrounds, or are they forever lost?
>Will this version include the original high resolution backgrounds, or are they forever lost?
Nope. Direct port. Worse than PS1 emulation.
>Disgusting human freya
Errbody ready to be hearing this for the next 40-60 hours?
Sucks about them not using the HD pre-renders this game looks like ass on top of the "HD" models.
I dont know about you, but that's how I feel about the game itself. ost is fine though.
The only reason i care about this game is because of my beautiful waifu. Which is also why I kind of hate it.
The only things I remember about FF9 are that black mage village having awesome music, some annoying as fuck water snake boss and those annoying mimic enemies Kuja forces you to fight when you get kidnapped by him.
I'm pretty sure I replayed it last year, it's just the most forgettable Final Fantasy game ever.
IX was a bad Final Fantasy. It had absolutely terrible equipment, skill, and ability systems that allowed no room for players to shape their characters in any way. The trance system going off outside of your control was even worse designed than VIII's limit spamming. The combat was slow and boring and the only interesting mechanic AT ALL was the dynamic between Steiner and Vivi, and it didn't really add anything to the game at all. It had a terribly boring setting that's only praised by "classic fans" because it didn't emphasize sci-fi, completely disregarding that Final Fantasy has used sci-fi elements from the start of the series. Your cast consisted of characters like Freya who were completely forgotten by the plot after their usefulness to the story was up, characters like Quina who basically just showed up whenever the game felt you needed a 4th party member and didn't do ANYTHING of any relevance, and characters like Amarant who I'm still trying to figure out why he was added to the game. The protagonist and antagonist being "space alien grim reaper brothers" is by far the worst plot twist in the series, much worse than either the orphanage in VIII or "You're a dream Teedus" could ever hope to be.
The worst part of all? In a series that's known for its innovation in its genre, Final Fantasy IX bitched out and actively BACKTRACKED to boring, outdated, mechanics. At least the early games it was a callback to were innovations of their time like the ATB system in IV, and at least for the PSX titles VII, VIII, and Tactics all tried to do new things with turn-based RPGs, storytelling, and world building even if it didn't please everyone- whereas IX actively decided to say fuck that, and appeal to idiots who want video games to stagnate.
It was boring and had nothing unique going for it. In fact, nothing about the game is particularly memorable. It has no sense of identity for itself and just takes after previous titles.
Didn't read, you're wrong.
Being excited for a port of a game you have been able to emulate for a fucking decade. Explain yourself /v/.
Why waste your adoration on a game that does your precious Freya so wrong? Wouldn't you have preferred her to be happy? To see her people thrive?
It's all we have while we cling to the hope that she returns one day.
They'll return. One way or another.
Anons in an earlier thread were fucking around with upscaling things.
Randoms on 4chan can manage to put in more effort for free than Square can be bothered to do as a business.
>The protagonist and antagonist being "space alien grim reaper brothers" is by far the worst plot twist in the series
Zidane should have been the main villain of FFIX, after all Zidane was designed to be an "Angel of Death" to be send to Gaia to incite war and destruction just like Kuja was. The game could have progressed pretty much the way it does now all the way to the "you are not alone" scene where Zidane would now pick up his intended role and the rest of the party would have to beat him, Kuja and Garland up to save both Gaia and Terra from them.
Also to fags that believe that Zidane and Garnet live happily ever after after the events of FFIX:
Kuja is an Angel of Death genome, created with the sole purpose of funneling souls to Terra by sowing warfare. As such, he's given powerful combat abilities and installed with a life limiter in case he turns traitor. Zidane is created as a replacement for Kuja, for the exact same reason, and it would be fucking idiotic for Garland not to limit him in the same way. The only evidence for him not having a life limiter is Garland telling him he doesn't, in the same speech when he lies about two other things, and is aware Kuja went off the rails when he found out about his limiter, so the smart thing to do would be to lie. Garland has a replacement unit for Zidane already lined up and ready to go. Assuming the limiter kicks in at the same age, and taking Kuja and Zidane's ages into account, the maximum Zidane has to live post ending is around 3 years.
Finally the entire theme of the game is that nothing lasts forever, it's seen in Vivi, Terra, etc.
>The worst part of all? In a series that's known for its innovation in its genre, Final Fantasy IX bitched out and actively BACKTRACKED to boring, outdated, mechanics.
I know this is pasta but
>What is the ATE (Active Time Event) system?
>At least the early games it was a callback to were innovations of their time like the ATB system in IV, and at least for the PSX titles VII, VIII, and Tactics all tried to do new things with turn-based RPGs, storytelling, and world building even if it didn't please everyone- whereas IX actively decided to say fuck that, and appeal to idiots who want video games to stagnate.
So it's okay when V to re-uses crystals and job classes because it introduced Chocobos, right? FF IX isn't even in my top 5 but your complaints are shit.
No, no. She'll show up in Kingdom Hearts 3.
In the Zootopia world.
I love the enthusiasm but can lewd stuff go here please? >>>>>/trash/831804
I don't know. A small piece of Brahne is less disgusting than the whole thing.
Maybe if you're Hiler.
Her skin is breaking out from the stress and guilt of all the wrong she did.
Every goddamn time I play FFIX Beatrix's Climmhazzard fills up everyone's trance bars so I have to watch through everyone's turning to super saiyan animation just to have the battle with Beatrix end right afterwards.
I wish trance mechanic was better designed. Too many wasted trances on random battles, or trance turns wasted cause the character went trance after you already issued a order.
playstation era final fantasies kind of make my eyeballs sad these days. I can still handle NES and SNES era FFs but the playstation ones are ugly as fuck on big screens. They were great games though don't get me wrong.
Okay, in all honesty, was it even possible to steal the flute from this motherfucker?
The amount of effort involved in putting together HD backdrops for the entire game would be massive. They would need to scour Square's archive for the artwork used in every single scene, which would take a great deal of time and manpower. Considering that it has taken them this long to find and fix the source code alone, that would be a monumental effort. Furthermore, if any backgrounds are missing, it would look terrible inconsistent to even the untrained eye. Finally, remember that this port is coming to mobile first and foremost, and most normies don't care about resolution in modern games, let alone old ones.
The poor scaling is likely just from them doing it in run-time with the PSX assets. That is assured to work on PC and mobile. NNEDI and waifu2x require lots of processing power.
First played it at 8yo. Played it atleast once every two years since then. Recently threw it on my phone and chugged through it, and now at 21, it's still based AF. All you notice is the slightly more adult things. >>322951073
>not wanting your game saves on the cloud forever
>not wanting achievements
>not wanting to support the developers and encourage them to bring their new games to Steam
not wanting your friends to know that you're playing FF IX
>thinks he is the cool and smart because he knows what an emulator is like it's fucking 1999 again
Whew, lawd. What a faggot.
Man, the art direction in this game was really gorgeous. Hopefully that terrible screenshot with a high-resolution Vivi and the background looking like a broken mess that's on the Steam page is just a bad stroke of luck and the rest of the game won't be as bad
>Refusing to fap to best FF boy.
Ok we good SE we good.
Now Steamfags can witness the most manly scene in video game history.
>No FF Dissidia slice of life
Man, I miss old Final Fantasy music.
IX will always have the greatest of all boss battle themes of the main line in my opinion, because it's the most overbearing and oppressive one.
The battle scenes use 3d scenes while the towns are prerendered backgrounds. Increasing the internal resolution of the game makes 3d objects more defined but since the backdrops in towns are just images it looks like a shitty upscaled image. The battle scenes have the exact same resolution as every other gamestate.
Can you even imagine how problematic he would be if this game was released today?
>Beatrix in HD will be something that actually exists
>Dick status: MUH
>Requires a DX10 only card
>uses the original ps1 320x240 pre rendered jpeg backgrounds
>uses the original sprites
>still uses the original compressed audio via .ogg files
>uses the original compressed video files from the ps1
>is somehow now 20 gigs
>requires multi core processors
Im getting some SERIOUSLY mixed signals from this game.
I think it broken something in my brain because most of this is just plain conflicting with itself.
Reminds me of Celes for some reason
Honestly, I don't think there's anything in the ports themselves that an emulator cannot provide. It's not like the GBA ports of 1 through VI that ranged from complete remakes to ports with additional endgame content added in.
>You need an i5 processor, 4gigs of ram and 20 gbs in you hard drive to be able to play the game smoothly
>is probably still locked at 24 fps
wew lad, i guess i'm better playing the mobile phone port.
It's not necessary, it's just how they developed it.
Different versions of DirectX are not interchangeable, you can only really build for one. If you are going to complain they didn't develop it using the 10 year old DirectX 10 or even older DirectX 9 then you aren't going to get much support from me.
>no tf2 cosmetics
No it doesn't really bother me, I mean who isn't using 11? But it's specifically designed for a 10 card upgraded to 11, and that's what baffles me. It's such a specific thing.
When the camera does those unnesessary movements that you can't skip? i don't think anyone can forget those. But you are right, it's been a long time since i played it and i don't remember those secuences being smooth at all.
Maybe when this is done, Tokita will be free to work on the Live-A-Live remake. Since he's in charge of the mobage division, I would think this is his job.
I would hope not.
The whole reason it had these problems in the first place was because it was pushing the PS1 really hard to render all the (for its time) really intricate backgrounds and animations. It could render that, or it could run well, it couldn't do both.
I would think it would run better on pc since it's more powerful and isn't just trying to emulate the PS1.
He really wants to do it, and it's a fairly popular rpg in Japan. Enough so that Square actually put it out on VC for its 20th anniversary.
Nah, it's just a fantasy world.
>appears suddenly as a friend of Zidane
>she already has someone she loves even thought he doesn't remembers
>after the resolution of her arc she becomes nonexistant
>in the ending freya is together again with his lover
There you go buddy.
Have you played any of the other titles other than 7 and 8?
9 is more of a call back/return to roots and has a metric fuckton of nods and easter eggs relating to earlier titles that you can only really appreciate if youve played them.
press select to get flavor text from the help moogle on key items
It also never reuses an enemy model with a recolor except for the 4 elemental fiends at the very end of the game and I think 2 different sets of beetle monsters on 2 different continents
If that's true i would like to see a remake. That game was wonderful and even though the gameplay mechanics were pretty innovative and fun it was limted by the level cap and number of skills you gain.
It's a shame, but a lot of the original backgrounds have been lost. This isn't widely known, but FF IX's background art was done msotly by western designers working at Square USA in Hawaii.
Some of the originals have been recuperated directly from the artists working on the project int his neogaf thread. http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=551612
>implying someone like Zidane isn't going to get bored of Garnet after a year or so of fucking her
>implying Fratley will ever remember her
>implying after years of wandering she will feel like settling down
>implying she and Zidane didn't get each other better than anyone else
he had an interview where he was asked about it, and that's where he expressed interest in remaking it for modern audiences.
He said that in modern form he thinks the best way is separate downloadable chapters, so you can play the ones you want, and in the end it would cost less than the game did at launch (keep in mind though that the average SNES game back then, LAL included, was like 80 bucks).
Look buddy, the idea of Freya and Zidane sounds cool, and i agree that the romance between Zidane and Garnet felt pretty forced, but as the game progress you realize that the interaction with Freya becomes almost null. Be glad that she at least got some development unlike Amarant.
I personally don't like games scattered as individual chapters to download but i still would like to see the remake, specially if Yoko Shimomura arranges the soundtrack, but the original would still be fine.
>I personally don't like games scattered as individual chapters to download
The guy has been in charge of the mobile division for years now. It's probably how he got the idea.
And yeah I'm sure Yoko would come back, she never left Square
In fairness Live-A-Live is like one of the only games where that works since the chapters were completely unconnected selections on a menu to begin with. They might as well be separate games before the Knight chapter since they all each have their own credit sequences.
That sounds nice, i'll be looking forward to it.
It would be fine if the chapters become separated games since some chapters are really short but i don't know how possible would that be.
Literally thousands of filters that you can use to make it look however you like, adjusting bloor, smoothness, colors, contrast, brightness, texture/sprites smoothing and tons of other shit.
Shader related might not be necessarily the one you like but does demonstrate my point
Either way there is a possibility to do something about image quality while from the pictures on steam it looks pretty fucking bad.
They're pissing off the ledge into the ocean.
One thing I didn't get about this game was how the fuck you're meant to know what to have equipped for bosses, etc. You can't change shit mid battle.
>get to Ark boss in Oielvert
>don't know you're meant to have bird killer and clear headed selected
So either you have to be psychic or do trial and error bullshit.
>there is absolutely no way to turn off/decrease the random encounters or the random encounter rate.
well, you're in luck anon. this version will let you turn off random encounters entirely.
I disagree with damn near everything in your post, and some of it is outright incorrect. It's my favorite Final Fantasy, though I don't put down other people for their favorites. The only FF I remotely dislike is XIII and maybe II(played it once, will never play again).
>MY OPINIONS IS MORE FACTUAL THAN YOUR OPINION
I must be getting old. I am legitimately bored of this type of video game discussion.
>inb4 "m-muh hugbox".
You can discuss things, agree or disagree, and not have it devolve into a circlejerk, plebians.
Not to be an entitled faggot, but I feel like these games deserve that manpower and justice done.
Whatever happened to japanese integrity? Japanese people used to be famous for high quality goods. Look at this shit though. Every "mobile/PC" FF port is fucking half-assed.
>Learning from your mistakes is bad.
>Game should spoonfeed you about the bosses strengths and weaknesses.
Bird killer is hardly make or break, and you should have most status effect protections on at all times.
I think japs have a bad case of "if it aint broken, dont fix" mentality.
Look at polyphony digital, fucking GT 5 and 6, look almost perfect but gameplay its like I am playing old arcade game.
Lots of jp games have this weird solutions and lack of innovation, like fucking Onimusha that for longest time used digital only.
You can see it everywhere, in games you still cant adjust pretty much anything but stereo/mono and few control presets.
Give me at least analog linearity, deadzone and sensetivity settings or something, we cant even adjust those.
Even their console is pretty ancient in its mentality, even something as basic as audio library is a major clusterfuck to the point managing your shit sometimes feels like using an early mp3 player.
Fucking browser is another lol.
its something about japs mentality and stagnation, need this picture of art development trough history with comparison to traditional jp art.
I realize what this is now.
If you watch the trailer in maximum quality you can see they slapped some kind of filters on the original prerendered cutscenes: https://youtu.be/4oDeSJI0qJc
They probably rendered these at retarded settings so its going to look ass at a retarded filesize.
yeah, but i think those FMV are on high resolution natively. I doubt they had 1080p videos without filter but those are still in higher resolution. Probably this is the best they can do.
The Homeworld 2 HD relase was pretty good. Homeworld 1 though? They broke the gameplay and Return to Kharak.
It's a prequel to Homeworld, back when the desert tribes were fighting for dominance before discovering the hyperdrive.
I am not sure, i just slapped random shader from crt group just to demonstrate a point.
I remember reading that source codes were deleted not because of space constraints but to prevent industrial espionage.
Basically they afraid some team of devs disassembly their source code, steal secrets of the ninja body, etc.
So, to prevent this till recently it was standard practice to delete source code soon after game was released.
My ass Some anon who old me this story first His ass
most people are lazy, and it might (keyword, MIGHT) be better optimized than running on an emulator
I'm not even making fun of epsxe being unoptimized, I'm making fun of bad PC ports
How isn't it?
They don't have the original layered and animated backgrounds, there isn't much they can do other things than put a filter on the in game backgrounds which are hard rendered at 320x240 for all layers and animations
This is a port, not a remake
Except again the backgrounds are animated and layered so upscaling jpgs of static single frame of a background that happens to be higher res achieves literally nothing, because the game has animated and layered backgrounds
