Yes, another Smash thread, but this one has a topic not explored fully, to my knowledge: The lazy-ass sound design when it comes to the fighters.
The sound design is incredibly lazy in it when you listen to returning characters. Mario, Link, Pikachu, Cpt. Falcon, Peach, Zelda and many others still have their exact same sound effects from Brawl.
Let me say that again: MARIO and PIKACHU still reuse the same voice clips from 6 years ago.
You're telling me that every Mario spinoff sports game and Mario Party merits them bringing in Charles Martinet to do some new "Wah's" and "Wahoo's," but SMASH isn't important enough for them to record some new ones?
And PIKACHU. Pikachu's voice actress voices Pikachu the Pokemon Anime series, meaning she performs dozens of "Pika's" and "-Chu's" every recording session. And, you're telling me that they couldn't take just a handful of NEW ones for something as important to Nintendo as Super Smash Brothers?
I know this may not seem like a big deal, but sound design is very important to making a game feel unique, giving it its own identity.
We've been listening to the exact same "Falcon PUNCH!" for too long, Nintendo. Give us a new one to gush over.
Yes! Yes we do! At least, I think so. In order for a game to feel unique it needs to have new assets that separate it from previous entries in the series. Sm4sh does this well in every department except this one, making it a glaring oversight for me. I may be alone in this, but there ya go.
Because they do it with every other game that Mario's in, no matter how insignificant the game, so clearly it's not difficult for them to do. In fact, Brawl hackers do it themselves, it's that easy!
Who cares? If they would have wasted resources on that, people would bitch and say they don't like the new changes, just as it happened with Fox, even though it's the same fucking VA from SF64.
Yes, Fox sounds stupid. Can we look away from that for a second here? Just because a new voice sounds bad doesn't mean that every new voice would, especially when some of the most iconic characters: Mario, Link, Pikachu, Luigi and Yoshi all implement the same same voice actors that voiced them before.
Here's the kicker, though: voice actors' intonations change. Their own interpretations of the characters' voices change and, thus, the character evolves. Charles Martinet's Luigi voice is NOT the same one that it was back in Mario Party 2 and his Mario voice has had slight intonation changes even since Brawl, if you listen. The characters have evolved in 6 years, so show it. That's all I'm asking for.
hear, even though newer means fresher, newer does not always mean better. Smash 4's sound design isn't particularly stellar, but that has little to do with reused voice clips. In terms of "identity," there's basically no way you could hope for Smash 4 to have any of that in the realm of sound, with a bajillion composers working on the project and sound effects grabbed from several different games. Ultimately, I see where you're coming from, and I don't really disagree, but you've made a lot of double-spaced sentences about shit you probably hardly know anything about and it makes you look hella retarded
To be honest I didn't even notice or care that they reused voice clips for pikachu and mario until you brought it up.
And I still don't care.
But even if they did make brand new clips unless they had Mario say something extra special, no one would care still.
Not to be disrespectful, especially with that most brilliant of punnery. But, as you said:
>newer means fresher.
While it is true that
>newer does not always mean better,
does it necessarily mean that freshness cannot be better? It's been Nintendo's philosophy for years to have new voice clips for every appearance of a character in a game. Clearly they did this for a reason in the past, so why stop for something as special as Smash?
Dude, I don't know. Because it's a game that likely blew its budget somewhere other than caring about sound. Look at the soundtrack on the 3DS version.
>does it necessarily mean that freshness cannot be better?
No, that's not what I said at all. Simply that freshness may be outweighed by lack of punch, lack of complexity, hamfisted delivery, etc. Actually, now that I think of it, I'm pretty sure both Melee AND 64 grabbed all of Mario's vocal sounds from SM64. Brawl has been the only Smash game to have new, unique voice clips for Mario.
>jigglypuff still reusing the exact same sound clips from fucking smash 64
Part of me is attached to those sound effects, but on the other hand it feels really lazy
i think the ''TOPIA!!", the "fiYAAAA", his "MissON... COMplete" and his gut wrenching ko sound from melee were really nice but im glad he has new sounds. Makes him sound more human or like a real person/character.
>Noone complaining about the Kid Icarus characters all having generic mediocre dub voices
I actually like Ike's english voice, but the KI reps (though Dark Pit probably has the same voice as Pit) just sound shitty
And I like Sonic's new voice actor, never had a problem with it, but he sounds a lot less enthusiastic in Smash 4.
Lucario got new "argha" and "hooaah" noises.
Ness got new "okay" and "tagh" noises.
Kirby got new "wayo" and "poyo" noises.
Why did they do only some voices and then said "nvm. fuck all the new sounds and music. Just recycle music. Yes, fuck the new victory themes too, stop making them and just recycle them as well"
Lucario got an entirely new voice actor I believe. There's the character I keep forgetting. Lucario never really spoke too many sentences in Brawl iirc. I don't think I like the 3DS voice as much as Brawl's.
>but the KI reps (though Dark Pit probably has the same voice as Pit) just sound shitty
Really? Pit in Smash 4 sounds better then his Brawl VA. Granted only Pit's VA (Dark Pit's as well) returned from Uprising as Palutena and Viridi's were busy.
>Only Bowser with Bowser Jr. and Rosalina get their own victory themes.
It would have been nice for Luigi to have something from Luigi's Mansion (Dark Moon).
>Ness will never have his comfy theme from 64/Melee again
The Falcon Punch is different. And this is a pretty retarded complaint. I haven't played Brawl in several years and would neither notice nor appreciate any changes. What's one "pika" to another? Or one "YAHOO" to the next? It's the same shit and i'm not gonna piss my pants because they didn't make it one decibel off.
Is it wrong of me to like Jason Griffith's Sonic better than Roger Craig Smith's? I actually love how unironically campy the voice is. Sonic will never be the same in Smash.
Rest in Peace
YOU'RE TO SLOW
I'LL SHOW YOU HUUUUUURRRRAAAAHHHHHHH
too all sonic players if your side roll into up kick combo doesnt work the first time, it isnt going to work the next fifty times you try it
please cool your autism and play for real
Be more specific
You talking about voices? Because the sound effects in this game is god tier, hearing sound effects from smb games in the characters and kirby NES sound effects with Kirby and Dedede, it's great.
It varies with voices
Your focusing on the ones that barely change yet ignoring how others like Pit Fox DK and Bowser have altered ones
Don't be nit picky.
I honestly don't care about whether they reused stuff from characters that speak in sound bites (Mario, Link ect) but I really wish that they updated ALL the characters that acually spoke.
Pit and ZSS both got retakes to a bunch of their lines whereas Marth and Ike are exactly the same. Firstly I'm ready to take the nostalgia goggles off, if you're gonna base Marth off Shadow Dragon it's time for him to speak in English. Or even barring that give him something new to say.
Ike's in the same boat. If you're gonna go through all the work to give him a redesign based off his Radiant Dawn appearance at least give him some new lines to match.
>Olimar still doesn't have voice clips
64 sound effects >= Melee sound effects > all
64 announcer >>> Brawl announcer >> Melee announcer = Smash 4 announcer
Uprising Pit > Brawl Pit
And Palutena's VA couldn't make it to Smash 4 so they had to change her.
Thye changed Viridi as well?
>generic animal grunts
you mean lower quality garbles and gurgling noises. I constantly bitch about this everywhere but they actually fucked up the voices between Brawl and Smash 4. those are not animal noises.
>There are people who don't play as brOlimar
Bad taste if I've ever seen it.
>Kenny James's Bowser will never be in Smash
>Bowser will never roar "SHOWTIME" as he transforms into Giga Bowser
Okay, so I found that Melee Mario had quite a number of new voice clips that seem to have been lifted from 64, but there were many others not found in 64's that were brand new voice clips.
I am talking specifically about the voice clips. The rest of the sound design is great, I concede to that.
Finally, someone else is on the same page as myself. Update the character in Smash to fit their current interpretation. This is how you show how a character has evolved. For a game like Smash, where fan-service is half the fun, showing how a character has changed is just as important as showing off where they've come from. See pic related: Current voice actor, moveset inspired by the classic games and modern ones alike.
I'm more disappointed that characters like Olimar/Alph didn't get voices, but I can't say I expected anything less from Sakurai.
Other than that, I don't fucking care. Also I hope edgy blue Kirby's deep ass voice starts getting used in actual Kirby games.
>Metaknight will never tell you to COME
For a game like Smash, lore is one of the MOST important things. Perhaps not Smash's lore itself, but the lore of the games that its fighters hail from and staying true to those characters. This is why people were so hyped over the Kremlings in Smash Run. It meant they were acknowledging an era of DK that had been ignored for several years.
Falcon's YEEEEERRRAAAAAAGGGGHHHH is the superior voice clip. This is fact.
I'LL USE THIS FRYING PAN... AS A DRYING PAN!
Kirby and Charizard got new voice clips and everyone's fine with them. At least, I'm pretty sure Charizard's are new. They sound new to me.
Yes. Fox sounds stupid. Now, can someone raise their hand and give me a changed voice clip that is NOT fox's that has been universally panned? Don't be shy, children.
>no chest-beating taunt where he shouts "I RULE!"
>I HATE FOX'S NEW VOICE WAAAA
>It's his voice actor from Star Fox 64
Metaknight in the Kirby anime has the same VA as Brock.
brawl's voice was pretty forgettable. Atleast smash 4's identifiable, which gives fox more character, even if it is that of a clown.
His melee voice also gave him character to make him be remembered as a badass who shouter random shit with a cool tone.
