The only way you can argue it objectively is in combat, because it's a turn based RPG.

The story and stuff I think works more in Earthbound. Sometimes I felt the setting and pacing of MOTHER 3 felt off. The end really pays off though.

You need to play Earthbound before MOTHER 3, no exceptions. You will regret it if you don't. You can skip MOTHER 1, but you'll also be missing something there too.

actually no, it's totally up to you. it takes around an hour of dedicated work, though. You kill crows for cookies and dogs for bread rolls, then sell them to the shop until you have enough money. Buy the t-rex bat, then when you meet Ness, you've got the best weapon in the game for like 30 levels.

You can sell the ruler and the compass. They do nothing. The compass isn't like a directional compass, it's the mathematical tool. Selling those is $2, and it frees up 2 slots for cookies for your bat.

You can safely sell the big bottle rocket, the boiled egg, the ruler and the protractor. Keep the broken air gun and bad key machine (Since you have to have the key machine).

When your IQ stat hits 12, sleeping will give you a chance to fix the broken air gun into a weapon. That's Jeff's other special talent, he can fix broken items sometimes. So don't sell that, it makes a great weapon for him later on.

And again, if you don't feel up for grinding cookies and bread, feel free to move on.
