Valve has no commercial incentive to release Ep.3 or HL 3. They make enough money with steam, Hat Simulator 2 and pretty pretty princess gun dressup. Why would they take the risk with a big AAA title when their current shekel farming scheme is far more profitable than it could ever be?

Do you guys think they're going to include a dynamic lighting element to their engine? I don't know how it works: are a lot of modern engines built with that capacity, and devs just don't bother or is it vice-versa?
All I know is that I would thrust my money down Gabe's pants if they make that an active inclusion in their games. Playing L4D3 with dynamic lightning in and of itself makes the game more immersive, despite the less-realistic feel the series has been going towards.

Top-notch graphics for its time (Not as revolutionary as 2's graphics but still great for the time), good gameplay and one of the craziest trips ever in a videogame, from a scientific laboratory to the weirdest dimension ever.

But let's rewind the story. What happened with Episode 3 that caused it to originally get delayed eternally and then drop off the face of the earth? Everything was going great beforehand. Valve quickly releases episodes 1 and 2 at the proper times, and then... nothing. What was it about episode 3?
I disagree. Writing a GOOD time travel story is hard as hell. You have to determine what sort of time travel your story will use and the ramifications of what that entails, and keep the entire thing logically consistent.
Now, if you're talking about removing the multiple universe time travel shit and just taking the setting of Columbia and making a good story out of that, then yeah pretty much anybody could make a good story. The problem was that Levine changed his mind entirely about what the story was supposed to be a few months before it shipped, and he could not handle the concepts he was trying to write about. He fucked it up bad. Even if it was just retreading ground that Bioshock had already explored, it would still have been a better story than what we got.

I get the feeling that all the episodes were being worked on simultaneously, but something really, really serious went wrong with episode 3 in the planning stage. Like, they could not accomplish what they wanted due to tech constraints or something. They must have literally had nothing by the time EP1 was done and presumably no more progress after EP2. That's probably why they kicked the development of other titles like TF2, Portal and L4D into high gear around ~2006, because they knew they'd need games to full the ever-expanding time gap for episode 3. And then, of course, things spiralled out of control with steam and TF2 hats and sequels and F2P and I wouldn't be surprised if Valve still hasn't gotten any work done on EP3. Or better yet, only Gabe has been working on EP3, and it will be his life's ultimate masterpiece, when it releases after he dies of heart failure in 10 years.
but source 2 is a new source engine. you can't call it 2.0 because that's implying that it's just a new version of source (which titanfall is a new version of source believe it or not) when in reality there's going to be as much of a difference in engine as there was from goldsrc to source.
Portal 2 takes place a LONG time after 1. Portal 2's events are irrelevant to the HL story as anything more than references to old Aperture's accomplishments, due to how long after 1 it is. Portal 1 is what takes place in the same timeframe as the HL series so far.
It should be worth noting that this is why the Combine are so set on getting whatever is inside the Borealis. Because they can't get into Aperture

I've heard all kinds of stuff. People say "they couldn't think of anything revolutionary and knew it would just let people down" but that only applies when talking about HL3. The HL2 episodes were basically just expansion packs. They didn't need to be mind blowing or super innovative. Ep1 and Ep2 certainly weren't: they were just more of what was great from HL2. And there was no reason why Ep3 shouldn't have been able to work out similarly.

I remember a conspiracy, started by an obvious ruseful but nonetheless interesting YouTube comment which stated that Chell actually died in Portal 2 and the ending symbolized her ascension to a paradise based on Greek mythology.
My thoughts on the matter is that Valve probably felt that they were pushing their magnum opus out the door too fast and they didn't want Half-life to be completed through a couple of rushed episodes (HL3 was originally supposed to be all 3 episodes put together)
They are probably waiting for technology to catch up with the ideas they have to make it a true sequel to one of the best reviewed games of all time.
When each Valve project reaches completion it delays all other projects because most people focus on finishing the upcoming game.
The sudden acquisition of Left 4 Dead probably delayed Episode 3 and after that initial delay there was no point in continuing with the Episodic development because the point is that the releases are released constantly. Also this episodic development probably could have not worked in consoles either.
With the delays probably Episode 3 evolved from a small game into something much greater, so it probably turned into Half Life 3. The last major delays were DOTA2 and Source 2.
I think after Source 2 is completed Half Life 3 will be next.
I think they will get back to it when they have literally nothing else to work on. Like, what do we know they're working on right now, game development wise? Dota 2 is still pretty actively developed, although I don't think the team for that is even that big. TF2 less so, and really its life cycle seems to be winding down. Presumably SteamOS is taking up some resources, but I haven't even heard about any of that in a while. So presumably they're working on something new right now, possibly a sequel to one of their current franchises, with the only ones that really seem to make sense for them being a new L4D or a new HL. Or else it's some crazy unexpected Willie Wonka shit, which is just as likely.

Funny thing I just realized, all panoramic screens around the elevators in the beginning of Portal 2, supposedly displaying the last Aperture technology ever conceived, have a copyright symbol with some 90s date (1997, if I'm correct) on the bottom. In the Half Life storyline, that was the year where the Black Mesa incident occurred. Therefore, Aperture Science stopped working around the same time Black Mesa did.

Like I said, valve is selective leaking. If they gave up too much about Half-Life 3 other than it being actively developed since shortly before Portal 2 it would spoil the surprise. HL3 has been in development since right about F-Stop and Portal 2 separated, its more than a coincidence.

TF2 is a sequel to a Source implementation of a Quake 3 mod.
Portal is a student project developed into a full game, and now has a sequel.
L4D originated at another development studio before Valve bought them out, and also has a sequel.
Alien Swarm is a remake of an UT2k4 mod in Source.
CS:GO is a sequel to a Source port of a HL multiplayer mod.
And Dota 2 is a remake of a WC3 custom map.
If you're going off of games that originated at Valve and were based on ideas that started at Valve, you've pretty much just got the Half-Life series, and we're swiftly approaching a decade since a release. Dude's not that far off the mark.

Visually Black Mesa is pretty nice.
But the game play just doesn't fit. HL1 being made into slow-poke HL2 style feels terrible, and my biggest gripe is that they cut out parts of the game that they just happened to not like, which is absolute bullshit when it's a remake.
It shares all of the gameplay with it, because Portal and Narbacular Drop are literally the same game. You shoot portals, you keep momentum when you go through them. Story doesn't matter.

No idea what you mean by "Looney Tunes comedy." I absolutely love the writing and personally think it's a perfect extension of that of the first game. I loved Cave Johnson, I loved Wheatley, I loved the other spheres and that one doomed free-thinking turret and the GlaDOS origin story that yes, strictly speaking, didn't need to exist, and I really really really loved the ending. Call me a faggot but that may be the closest I've ever been to crying at a video game.
IMO the easy puzzles where the main problem, and it was pretty obvious that level-design-wise they were struggling to expand on the mechanics of the first game meaningfully or introduce new mechanics that had any sort of potential.

They removed tons of aspects of the maps to make them faster, including part of surface tension which is probably the best chapter in HL to begin with.

I'm not dissing either one by pointing out that they're the same, and it would make sense that they are considering it's the same people working on both.
Have you played Narbacular Drop? It stood out to Valve because of the creative gameplay conceit of portals, but everything else about it was decidedly student-gamey. The level design wasn't exactly mind-blowing and game mechanics sort of came out of left field (what exactly was the turtle for?)

The thing is half-life has absolutely no story, it's just a series of random events held together by fanfic story thrown together in people's heads based on the facts.
If it ever comes out it will be shit, and it will be lauded because everybody has their own little version of half-life's story in their head and nothing valve ever comes up with will be able to hold everything together, especially considering valve has no idea how to write story.

Half-Life is their baby. They may seem focused on their multiplayer games but I doubt they would do something so bad that it fucks up the franchise that made their company. Call it wishful thinking but I reckon it'll be a pretty damn great game if it ever sees the light of day.

it's presented in a humorous way, but looking past the delivery, the shit that went on in old Aperture is pretty damn dark.
Also, Glados origin may not have been nessecary, but if you are going to revive the character, then you need to do SOMETHING with her. Not just make it Portal 1 Glados all over again. And with the idea of visiting old Aperture, to gain some insight into Aperture's past, it's inevitable that Glados will be involved somehow, and receive some kind of development.

That's assuming Chell even leaves through the same exit in both games. We see in Portal 2 that Aperture can reconfigure itself in nearly infinite ways, though I will say that GLaDOS's chamber may be a constant. Even so, the entire top of the room is destroyed at the end of Portal, yet somehow a shed would have to have been built/moved there by the end of Portal 2.

Honestly the saddest thing about Half Life 3 is the moment when you finish the game. You'll have had so much fun. The game will reinvent the shooter genre. And then what? Do you have any idea how long it will take Valve to make the next one? Maybe they'll find a new way to bring content quickly, but sooner or later you know it's going to end like HL3 but worse.
