You don't really need to grind the main story. You just need a priest and maybe a mage, then you can go through the entire story with just the Unique characters given to you.

You really shouldn't be scared of progressing and having your characters die because you can always have them piggyback exp from team attacks later and healing them will get your good equipment from the hospital.

And once you get better equipment from the store/Assembly you can just stack it on your weaker character if you really need to level them. A good weapon is better than a few measly levels.
