Well yeah, we all know Dr. Who is his true and canon name, but he's never supposed to be called that by other characters and the way it's thrown in so nonchalantly it's like the writers didn't realize this.
>>
>>86717185
Plot-wise yes but not thematically probably. WEaT/TDF was about The Master even though he/she wasn't in it that much, but overall it was her story of overcoming his past and making a right choice for once as a redemption story. Twice Upon a Time is entirely about the Doctor.

hi
>>
>>86717247
Not only was continuity not a thing then, but after episodes aired no one expected them to be watched ever again, meaning writers felt free to contradict their own work. Dalek history, for example, becomes an impenetrable mess inside of their first three stories, all of which were written by the same guy.

It was only around the 1980s when people started paying attention to any of that stuff, which coincidentally is also when 1) Doctor Who became a niche interest rather than a national treasure, 2) home video became a thing, and 3) the biggest fanboy in history took over the show and made it totally inaccessible to non-uber-fans, dredging up 20-year-old plot points because he could.
>>
>>86717466
>>86717799
I mean clearly they were more lax back then since that War Machines scene got to air, but it's a mistake that wasn't corrected, not the deliberate revelation of the Doctor's name. His name in-universe was supposed to be a secret and all other references to it being Who are in the form of sly jokes. That's why no one else ever calls him Dr. Who. And of course continuity was a thing, earlier in the year they had the Massacre speech and the first time Dalek history was retconned they did attempt to give a weak explanation. The show generally avoided assuming people had seen past episodes and for good reason, but it's not like the idea of consistency didn't exist or people in the '60s were incapable of remembering basic stuff.

what do you think about cloister being a sexist and misogynist? he definitely not a feminist
>>
>>86717953
Notice how the Peter Cushing Doctor gets called Dr. Who a million times, because in-universe that is the character's name and it's not a secret. Meanwhile Hartnell's Doctor gets called "Dr. Who" in only one scene, cowritten by a writer who had never written for the show before and one who had written only one story. And as Neo's pointed out, people in the production team and the general public often referred to the character as Dr. Who, so it's easy to see how someone would get confused and think that Who was only a seldom-used name.

>>86718010
The fuck are you talking about?
BARBARA: Oh, look, I don't understand it any more than you do. The inside of the ship, suddenly finding ourselves here. Even some of the things Doctor Foreman says
IAN: That's not his name. Who is he? Doctor who? Perhaps if we knew his name we might have a clue to all this.
Memes aside, that is the meaning of the show's title, that he's mysterious, not that his name is Doctor Who. The reason the character was referred to as Dr. Who is most likely because he's the Doctor from Doctor Who, distinguishing him from all the other doctors in real life and fiction. I remember seeing something where Robert Holmes complained about writers making the same mistake, writing "Dr. Who" in their scripts and of course he would change it to "Doctor" because that's what the character is supposed to be called and it would be profoundly weird if some character randomly pulled out a "Dr. Who." Honestly, I think you're making the viewers and writers of the '60s out to be simpletons, like they wouldn't notice that the Doctor's name had never before been stated onscreen or couldn't understand the concept of a character being referred to by a different name inside and outside a show.

Capaldi is pretty good, all things considered. I liked him as the Doctor more than I liked Matt Smith, at least.
>>
>>86718574
End? Why end anywhere? What do you mean?
The show is ongoing. Go from S1 to S10 (the latest series), or S5 to S10. Then S11 will air next year.

>>86718546
>Honestly, I think you're making the viewers and writers of the '60s out to be simpletons, like they wouldn't notice that the Doctor's name had never before been stated onscreen or couldn't understand the concept of a character being referred to by a different name inside and outside a show.
That's a good point, it's easy to conflate "Doctor Who wasn't really 'Doctor Who' as we think of it now back then" (which I think) with "60s people were dumb and didn't know/care about continuity". Good point.

The new UNIT team are back in UNIT: Encounters! Here's the cover art for the fifth set of UNIT Adventures, out in November.

Kate Stewart (played by Jemma Redgrave), Osgood (played by Ingrid Oliver) and the UNIT team are back! Coming out in November, the latest in the New Series of the UNIT adventures sees the team against Daleks, Sontarans, and their greatest threat yet...themselves!

-

The Dalek Transaction by Matt Fitton

When a rogue guerrilla faction offer an alien artefact for auction, Kate Stewart and her team go undercover to the jungles of Central America. But they find that the prize on offer is far deadlier than its owners realise. Captive, desperate and alone. That’s when a Dalek is at its most dangerous.

Invocation by Roy Gill

It’s Hallowe’en, and Josh finds himself at a party where phantoms are becoming all too real. Osgood is working late and hears a voice from the skies making strange incantations. The next day, Kate has gone missing in the Scottish Borders, and the team head north to investigate. Ghosts from the past are haunting UNIT, and now they threaten the whole world…

The Sontaran Project by Andrew Smith

On a routine reconnaissance mission, Colonel Shindi finds more than he bargains for in the Forest of Ardennes. Back in England, an old colleague makes Osgood an offer she cannot refuse. The chance to take part in an exciting new scientific advance. Before long, UNIT is on collision course with a force of alien clones, and Kate must forge an unlikely alliance.

False Negative by John Dorney

When a strange travel capsule is activated in UNIT’s laboratory, Osgood and Josh find themselves in a whole new world of trouble. Soon, nobody at UNIT HQ is quite who they seem, and the team discovers that the greatest danger they could ever face comes from within...

Not really. They're set before two Osgoods, so not much tie-ins. And the stories are pretty formulaic. Very, very Fitton. I've only heard the first 2 sets though, maybe the 3rd one with the Silents is better.

I liked them all well enough. Silenced was the best one and I'll admit it felt like the "reward" for listening to the first two. Assembled was really only fun wank the story itself wasn't incredibly interesting. Following his exit this Christmas, Capaldi confirmed to Digital Spy that he's open to an appearance in a future multi-Doctor story.

"I'm sure if it was right, if I thought the material was right, and it was the right time to do it," he said. "I love Doctor Who, so it's great to be in it. But I think there comes a time... when you've gotta go, you've gotta go, and leave it behind and let it get on with itself.

"Maybe in some years' time, I could pop up again. I'm quite happy to do that."

Maybe for the 60th anniversary in 2023, eh? Certainly, Capaldi would want any encore to "be special" and not just a throwaway appearance.

"One doesn't want to... it should never be a casual thing," he insisted. "It has to be special. That's one of the things I love about Doctor Who – when it connects with its past, which it has an increasing amount of.

"When it touches its own past, it's an electric moment."

>>

Because the Doctor is a man, but Jodie Whitaker is not a man, so she categorically cannot be playing the character of Doctor Who unless she's going to cross-dress
>>

Well if it's not the character of Doctor Who we need a new name to distinguish this new character. The title of Dr is associated most closely with the medical profession, as people are less likely to interact with doctors of philosophy than with medical professionals (e.g. their GP). As nursing is the largest (but not only, mind) field in the medical profession where women are statistically represented to a greater degree than men, it stands to reason that Nurse could be used as a substitute title for this new character who imitates Doctor Who.
Does that make sense?
>>
hol up hol up hol up

>>
>>86722327
No, you just explained what the meme is, not why.

This would work as the theme of a rival timelord to the Doctor if you imagine the "Blue one you know" as the TARDIS.
>>
>>86722372
What would you class as explaining why? I explained the joke and explained how present circumstances warrant the joke.
It's not even a new joke, it's been knocked around by red-top newspapers ever since the idea of a woman playing the Doctor first started to gain traction.

It makes no sense at all, though.

Clearly Jodie Whittaker will portray the Doctor, but she's being referred to as a nurse because female medical staff are always nurses?

Within the context of Doctor Who it makes no sense at all, I need more clarification.

Except she clearly can't portray the Doctor, because that character is a man, and her portraying this character would require her to play the role as a man, which it does not appear is the intention of the future showrunner.
As I explained, female medical staff are not always nurses, however nursing is the largest medical field in which women are over-represented. As such, if the character is not Doctor Who, it is fitting to use the appropriate and associated name of Nurse Who.
>>
>>86722698
That makes sense
>>
>>86722738
>Except she clearly can't portray the Doctor, because that character is a man,
The character has recently been retconned to have the ability of changing sex, just like he's been retconned to have all manner of abilities over the years including regenerating his entire body. You need to get over this.
>>
>>86722782
He's baiting, Anon.
>>
>>86722738
But if not all female medical staff are not always nurses, why is Nurse Who still being pushed?
>>
>>86722782
But it's not about sex, it's about gender, the psychological state of being man or woman
Changing from one gender to another requires a dramatic shift of psychology, including perceptions, emotions, cognitive ability in specific domains, etc., to the point where such a change would render the character unrecognisable. This is out of step with regeneration as it has been used since 1966, which only changes the way in which the same personality is expressed.

Because we need a new name for this new character. The name can't be Doctor, of course, and so we go to the second largest medical field, nursing, in which women just so happen to be statistically over-represented, so this name is appropriate.

So yeah, I figured it was something broken in my head. Maybe I'm just mentally fucked and I don't know it and I can't enjoy things normally or something. I didn't really care for Matt Smith at first and I still don't like Clara.

This is just insanity. A tiny fraction of the world's population watch the show. Tonnes of people dislike the show. Humans aren't meant to all be a homogeneous lump with the same opinions on everything. Think how boring GOT itself would be if everyone just sat around and nodded at each other, agreeing.

>Maybe I'm just mentally fucked and I don't know it and I can't enjoy things normally or something
Dude there is nothing wrong with having your own taste, literally everyone has it. You should see someone about this if it's really bothering you, if you need a professional to validate you or something. Your friends are not experts on psychology.

The idea that not liking some fictional characters on fantasy shows indicates mental illness or some kind of lack of self worth is absolutely crazy.

There is no normal, and you should be proud of your individuality. There's only one you in the world, and that's a beautiful thing. No one else is as good at being you as you.

I literally just got done crying because of how terribly I lost in a video game after like 10 losses in a row. I'm literally shit at every single thing I try in life, no matter how hard I try, I always end up failing. I can't even fucking PRETEND to like something to fit in, that's how fucked I am.

I don't know if I can afford to see a mental health professional about anything anyway.

As pathetic as this is going to sound, the part about Doctor Who I wish was real is the Cybermen. No more worrying, or pain, or anything bad. You just are. You're apart of a community, no more worries or fear or anxiety or failure.

I'm sorry I keep bothering you with my problems, it just helps to vent sometimes. I often feel like I have no one I can talk to, or if I do find someone to talk to they tell me basic things, like "have you tried doing X/Y/Z" and thinking that's magically going to help fix whatever is broken in my brain.

If anyone wants me to stop I will since this is technically off topic for this general.

It's no bother man, feel free to talk here. But you really should make it a priority to see a mental health professional. I totally get it if you don't have the money right now, but I really really recommend you make it a goal to get the money together for it.

If you're hungry you go get food. If you get a wound you put on a band-aid. If your mental health is making you unhappy, you see a professional. Nothing weird about it, more people should do it honestly. You deserve to be happy. You should learn to decouple opinions on pop culture from your sense of self worth and happiness, and a professional can help with that, and a load of other stuff too, that will help make you feel more fulfilled and happy. I'm happy to listen to you talk, but a professional who can actually seriously help is tonnes and tonnes better, I really recommend it. They won't sweep you aside with "durr have you tried cheering up / just liking X / doing X simple thing", they'll take you seriously, like you deserve.

Entertainment media is meant to entertain, not frustrate you as you try and force yourself into someone else's opinion. GOT wouldn't even exist if GRRM didn't have different opinions to other writers. People have to disagree and have different tastes, that's how humanity works, that's what makes the world interesting. Conflict isn't a bad thing. You deserve to be able to just be happy and comfortable in your own opinions instead of trying to change them or obsess over why other's feel differently.

I've been reading a bit of TARDIS Eridutorium, and when it's not being aggresively pretentious (the whole Logopolis CYOA basically boils to "JNT was a bit shit, wasn't he") it's interesting in just how much Sandifer's view of the show differs from mine. For him, even a story as milquetoast racist as Celestial Toymaker is completely antiethical to the spirit of Doctor Who and the Doctor himself, whereas I think that one of the Doctor's fundamental characteristics is that he's a paternalistic racist.

Also he describes Jo as an indepedent woman who undercuts 3's negative characteristics, whereas if I wanted to make an argument about Doctor Who being sexist, it would begin and end with her.

>The most egregious failure of moral priorities – again linked to a distinctly neoliberal kind of political context-removal – is in ‘The Day of the Moon’, in which the Doctor defeats the Silence by brainwashing the entire human race to become mindless, genocidal killers. Moffat thinks everybody on Earth has seen the Moon landing on TV, apparently discounting the humanity of anyone too poor or non-Western to not get televised updates on American triumphalism. It is never explained how or why the Silence are any worse than Nixon, with whom the Doctor gets comfortably pally, given that he dropped more tonnage of bombs than were dropped during WWII on small peasant countries in South East Asia.

I remember reading a book at some point about Doctor Who which featured a newspaper clip of a child talking to Jon Pertwee about being afraid of Doctor Who (the image they were using in the article was from the Daemons so I'm gonna assume that's what they were referencing at the time) and it had a really wierd conversation in it between Pertwee and this child - I'll see if I can find the book itself in the new thread.

>Pertwee: But why don't you want to watch it anymore?
>Child: I don't want to watch it anymore because it's scary each week and I don't like it
>Pertwee: But if you don't want to watch Doctor Who, the Doctor will get sad and kill himself!"

If you love Alan Moore give it a read. If you love Alan Moore more than you do Grant Morrison, definitely give it a read (while it gives respect to both artists IMO it's from a subtly Moore-favouring viewpoint).
>>
>>86733547
definitely moore>morrison for me. the "le magic wizrad duel!1!1!!' thing kind of puts me off though, is it obnoxious?
>>
>>86733661
It definitely isn't, the vast majority of the text is just straightforward discussion of the comics, the history, and the context. Occasionally there'll be a bit at the end of a chapter like "and then the next phase of the war began" or something but it's probably less in-your-face than Moore and Morrison's own actual magical shenanigans are in their own careers.
>>
>>86733858
okay that sounds really good then, thanks for clearing that all up anon! /who/ is the only place i know with levelheaded discussion of his stuff, where i dont feel like im losing my mind
