Because it's the most focused the series has ever been, and it's frankly more entertaining. The first and second seasons were more about the soap opera characters with sides of paranormal stuff, now it's completely reversed with the paranormal stuff taking over and we're seeing individual characters being introduced sporadically. Lynch is clearly aiming towards something but at the same time he's had 25 years to perfect his art, and he's not worried about throwing in some humor to lighten things up (with the exception of Part 8).

Season 1 was good and it was good how balanced it was, but like you I believe the third is focused in a better way- shedding behind soap opera filler and fan service stuff like having Coop react enthusiastically to coffee and cherry pie for the billionth time.

While I agree with this, I don't think it's unreasonable to prefer seasons 1-2 and still respect 3. The original run had a great low-fi aesthetic, the characters as they appeared and behaved then were interesting and compelling even without the camp, and the weird, really entertaining ways that Lynch integrated and subverted popular tropes and formal elements in the shitty soap genre to make something stylized, slightly off and weird, yet still really visually interesting, all combined in a really deft way. And for all S3's good stuff, you have to admit that the stranger elements are a lot less subtle.

I guess I just don't see why you need to be a nostalgiafag to think that the pilot, for instance, is still the height of Twin Peaks as a project.

Good poster. I've been rewatching seasons 1 and 2 alongside 3 and honestly I may like 3 better. With the contrast, there are some elements of the original series that don't sit with me as well (Josie, hank and Norma, basically all the uninteresting and what is more easy to see as unimportant drama). That being said they're so different it's hard to "rank" the seasons, and both the original ones had unbelievable heights. Imo nothing Twin Peaks has beat FWWM, but we'll see after season 3 ends
