About the special effects:

What you're seeing is actually very classical in terms of film. Like the subtle jerk in frame when Frank disappears from Ben's apartment to the sound of tire squeals in Blue Velvet or that effect from Evil Dead when Scotty sits up and Ash shifts a foot or so-- perceptible breaks in the reality of the film which are used to intensify. It's incredibly uncanny in a way specific to motion picture (or physical illness) and as such is following a different playbook than most SFX editing. And the funny thing is that it implies that this set of rules, being much older and dependent upon the format itself, might actually have been a better representation and thus more effective tool than the modern "WE NEED TO SHOW EVERY PIXEL IN TOTO" ethos. In a world where the dream is slow-motion in motion picture shorthand, Lynch remembers the hazy, sped-up nightmare of Nosferatu stacking coffins of his native soil.

It's CGI / editing blended the way only film can do it finally transposed to digital (through sheer direction-- the only way to really do it), and in a very specific manner which hasn't really been on the menu since AVID freestyling, non-sequitur stitching became industry standard. It is, if anything, a wonderful presentation of a possible magic trick it's all-too-easy to forget.

Mr.C really feels like Cooper's cold, calculating side, he was clearly a part of Cooper's personality.

Notice in that one scene when he tells Ray he doesn't "need" anything but "wants" that information. This is in contrast to Cooper's inner balance, like when he told Audrey what he "wants and needs" are two different things. Mr.C fulfills all of Cooper's "wants".

This is similar to Dougie's story too, he's very much the innocent and eccentric side of Cooper's personality. Cooper was one whole peak but got split into two.

The best evidence backing this up is how the VFX have been in previous episodes (when the thing from the black box eats those kids having sex, when Laura ascends from the red room, when Dougie's head pops off) all very lo fi.

Compared to the VFX in episode 8 which are of a very high quality, especially the nuclear blast and the flying lizard bug. From this comparison alone it's clear the lo fi SFX are being employed for the reason of them being shanky uncanny and more suspect than pristine CGI.

It's where 3D has been going in games for a while now, look at mine craft, the films of David o Reilly etc, the Impressionism of CG is in full flow and gone is the obsession with photo realism. Using the texture of the material itself, in this case film and film grammar, to fuck with viewers is far more effective than presenting a warped vision through photo realism. The most unsettling thing is skewing the work ITSELF, which lynch has been doing for years and is doing in TPTR remarkably well.
