Watch the movie and maybe you'll find out, sonny
Imagine being Maddie in that scene and having to be all like "damn, Leland, you fuckin' scary, all sexy with your tight smile and horrific monster face. I would totally get raped and murdered by you, both me and my cousin." when all she really wants to do is go back to Missoula. Like seriously imagine having to be Maddie and not only stay in that living room while Leland Palmer flaunts his disgusting body in front of you, the favorable spotlight barely concealing his filthy hair and demonic possession, and just stay there, moment after moment, hour after hour, while he perfected that dance. Not only having to tolerate his monstrous fucking visage but his haughty attitude as BOB tells him he's STILL GOT IT and DAMN, LELAND PALMER LOOKS LIKE *THAT*?? because he's not the one who has to stand there and watch his mannish fucking gremlin face contort into types of grimaces you didn't even know existed before that day. You've been dreaming of nothing but going back to Missoula (Montana) for your ENTIRE time in Twin Peaks. You've never even seen anything this fucking disgusting before, and now you swear you can taste the sweat that's breaking out on his leathery head as he forces it suggestively at you, smugly assured that you are enjoying the opportunity to stand there and revel in his "statuesque (for that is what he calls it)" expression, the expression he worked so hard for with BOB in the previous months. And then he smashes your head into the wall, and you know you would do anything to go back to Missoula, but you lie there and endure, because you're fucking Maddie. There's nothing you can do. Just bear it. Hide your face and bear it.

FWWM pretty clearly shows the Lodge spirits as being tied to Electricity / natural forces. There is a scene for example where the Arm says "fire walk with me", looking in the direction of BOB, and then his entire face is illuminated. The screen then fades to the curtains of the Lodge.
There's another scene with the Tremond Grandson inside the painting snapping his fingers, and the entire room becoming illuminated, with the scene then fading to the Lodge.
So it's not too much of a stretch to believe "Fire walk with me" means harnessing the power of the Lodge for your own purposes. (you are making Fire literally get off his ass and walk with you). Whether Fire means the entire Lodge, BOB, or MIKE is unknown. In ep3 of the show when Cooper Dreams of Philip Gerard saying "fire walk with me", it's implying that Fire was walking with him before he cut the arm off (and decided to do good).
Hope that helped improve your understanding.

>Why was Bob extracted from the doppelganger and he's still alive?
Honestly not sure, but I'm sure we'll find out.
>Why would Bob possess someone already evil?
Do you really need to ask this? BOB can't just "possess" anybody he wants. Look at Leland and Laura. He spent years corrupting them first. BOB doesn't "possess", he inhabits and lifts all guilt and inhibition away. He doesn't make you do anything you aren't already capable of, hence why he needs to corrupt and couldn't just possess Cooper or Truman or whoever.
>Why did the doppelganger literally vomited all the garmonbozia once his time was up?
So did Dougie, it was just a lot less. Was BOB with him, too?
>Why he didn't die after Ray shot him?
You already basically asked this. We don't know yet.
>Where are the other doppelgangers outside the lodge?

This got retconned in episode 8. Laura was manufactered. Also, Leland got inhabited as a kid. Kids don't have the "guilt" i think you mean.
The doppelganger is just a copy created by the lodge. The evil within him was Bob. Now Bob is gone. We surely lack info right now, but he wakes up after Bob is gone. He can't be the same after that.

Doppelganger Coop is probably still the same, for the most part.
Laura being manufactured doesn't mean she no longer is human, the other anon is correct.
Also it looks like garmonbozia to me.
>>84527417
Yes, he's a product of the lodge in the same way "DoppelCoop" is, therefore he harvested garmonbozia as well. If you're saying it doesn't look the same as pic related, it's because he wasn't a fucking evil "shadow self" working in tandem with BOB. Look at the picture you posted, you can see corn and the black motor oil-esque liquid, just obviously not as much because he was just an average schlub.

Think about this for 1 second. Why didn't BOB just possess Cooper if this were the case? The response you're replying to is 100% right.
CUTEST!
>>84527605
not him but do you remember when evil coop looks in the mirror in jail, sees BOB and says something like "good... you're still with me"
pretty clear that most of evil coop's actions are his own and BOB is supplemental to his evil but not really integral to it
Lads, xanax kicked in and I feel like normal again
>>84527605
Because Cooper is not a normal human bean either, according to the tapes. He's clearly linked to Laura, and BOB couldn't possess her either. We're missing info, so feel free to disregard my crap tbqh. My whole point was that the doppelganger is not evil per se.
*blocks your path*
>>84527733
BOB couldn't possess Laura because MIKE tossed her the ring. She also actually fought for years, unlike Leland who was an easier target.
>My whole point was that the doppelganger is not evil per se.
This is where everyone disagrees with you. I think it's pretty well established that they are. It would be a total surprise if they said otherwise.
>>84527733
>My whole point was that the doppelganger is not evil per se
he is though, this is indisputable
you might be confused because "doppelganger" as a word doesn't necessarily mean an evil double, but in twin peaks it's used in that sense. when hawk first describes the black lodge he says the shadow self is also known as a "dwellor on the threshold", which is supposed to be evil
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dweller_on_the_threshold
>>84527731
That's good.
Don't let anxiety take hold of you.

probably because coop showed fear, he was told that's the #1 thing you have to do in the black lodge

watch up to 50 seconds and he says that "if you face the black lodge with imperfect courage your soul becomes utterly annihilated" or something along those lines.
if you remember the ending of season 2 cooper keeps a straight face the whole time until he faces his doppenganger, where he gets spooked and tries to run away from him. the last shot is the doppelganger grabbing hold of him, then suddenly he's out in the world
Laura's never out in the world because she never entered the black lodge alive and faced her shadow self. couldn't tell you why she's in the black lodge now though

>>84528314
i think you're being a bit too rigid with the rules here, given that we've seen leland in the waiting room despite him being straight-up dead, and his doppelganger was last seen there as well.
i don't think everything in the black lodge / red room actually does follow a list of 'rules'. and why does it have to? we've seen doppelcoop straight up break the 'rules', and MIKE was pissed at BOB for seemingly breaking the rules in FWWM, so it's clearly possible for doppelgangers and lodge spirits to just do what they want

nah I think the black lodge transcends rules with characters like laura and leeland being in there
but I think there was a clear link between what hawk is saying and the way he's caught by his doppelganger, remember how he chases after him? and coop keeps his composure the entire time until this point
>>84528192
It's all because Cooper did not enter the lodge upon death. He entered as a living person and was not destroyed by Bob like Windom was. They preferred to take Cooper's place in the world since Bob did not like being beholden to the lodge.

watch this scene again, it's like he only just remembered BOB is still inhabiting him - and the part of coop clearly in control thinks it's a good thing he's still there. and the flashback of the coop doppelganger shows him laughing with BOB so he isn't controlled by BOB but working together
this scene also directly precedes the phone call one iirc, so it could be he's checking if BOB is there for his ebin electricity superpowers (though I doubt that as I think even douggie can do electricity stuff)
Can we all agree this is the most kino scene of the series?

His resolve was clearly broken when he started running away. The Lodge kept changing to prevent him from leaving because he broke. It only let him get as far as he did to twist the knife.
>tfw Sheryl Lee will never find you shrunken to an an inch tall, mock you for your size, then talk about eating you while making that face, then finally putting you in her mouth and playing with you with her tongue, then finally swallowing you, then landing in her stomach while you hear her giant giggling, and then finally get digested

dunno if you're joking but i agree the most daring scenes of the whole series are Leland's little episodes, especially in hindsight of FWWM. It's at once tragic, bizarre, stupid, daring, funny, terrifying. Everything Twin Peaks hits tonally in one scene.
>>84528798
>it really isn't mate, you must be the only person that believes dopplegangers aren't evil
I am aware, but really, it's just because the doppelganger would be a really boring character otherwise. He has an agenda outside of BOB, but that doesn't mean he is evil. I can't see him beign the same after what happened in episode 8. All of this comes out of my ass, but maybe he and the real Cooper are on a race to Twin Peaks. The real Cooper needs to find Laura, and the doppelganger needs to find BOB. Whoever wins decides the fate of humanity.

It's clear in the s2 finale that Bob and DoppelCoop are in cahoots. They are laughing together, as if they have a plan.
DoppelCoop will just be less powerful without Bob, but I doubt his agenda has changed. Bob will find another host (possibly Richard Horne) and DoppelCoop will still be a threat, but perhaps without the full extent of his magic powers that we've already seen. I can't see them ditching this character until the last few hours of the show.

Sheryl Lee might be the best casting of all time. She even looks exactly like the one incredibly hot troubled chick from a troubled home in your high school that every one wants to fuck but instead she's banging some grease monkey/meth dealer who didn't graduate but is five years older than everyone else and WILL kick your ass if you even look at his fucking bike. None of that means "better", but you said "for me" so that's understandable if that's your preference.
Honestly it's too much of an apples and oranges comparison to do objectively, so the only real measure of "quality" is personal preference. Arguing over it is pointless dick measuring.

This is an amazing thread, people are discussing the implications of recent events on the lore in great detail as if it wasn't just a rationalization Lynch hired a TV hack writer to come up with for his stream-of-consciousness nonsense.

No, I love his nonsense, I'm a big fan of his features who's never watched Twin Peaks. I say "nonsense" because if we're talking cause-and-effect, that's essentially what it is. I mean, his last feature was constructed on the principle that the Unified Field to which he ascribes mystical properties means that all human stories are connected - which is a lovely idea which effectively makes traditional narrative impossible.
All the lore in Twin Peaks, which is like nothing else in his work, is obviously about making the set pieces tie together in a way that TV viewers, indifferent to non-narrative pleasures as most of them are, won't throw a shitfit. For example, garmonbozia is a euphonious nonsense word, and Lynch thinking that it would be fun to have creepy people eat creamed corn, then he and Frost hash out the bullshit about why it looks like creamed corn. It looks like creamed corn because it is creamed corn - Lynch likes putting mudane stuff of his childhood side by side with ominous stuff. You can tell from this thread who watches his features and who doesn't. The people who don't - most of you - give a shit about what exactly the word "doppelganger" means in the Twin Peaks mythos, or what the precise make-up of a little pile of goo tells us about the person who emitted it. It's ludicrous, really.
>>84530582
>Pseud: The Post
Get over yourself. (Mostly) Everyone here is a fan of Lynch's films, too. You aren't special or knowledgeable for being familiar with them.
If you think Lynch only cares for the imagery and not the "story" of Twin Peaks, you're absolutely wrong. Just because he's an abstract artist, doesn't mean he also doesn't appreciate traditional narratives. (The Elephant Man, Dune, The Straight Story)
Lynch loves the Twin Peaks universe and the stories within it. I'm sure he had abstract ideas/images in his head that he wanted to put on screen and then connect to the story later, but those were few and far between. Get out of here with your Film 101 bullshit.

Yeah, Lynch didn't give any of the cast the full scripts and only revealed the full meat of the story to Kyle MacLachlan because he was concerned about people talking about his abstract imagery before it aired. Not because he actually genuinely cared about a story he carefully crafted with Mark Frost.
For someone who's so condescending and snobby about "watching Lynch's features", you really misunderstand the man himself.
>The Shvetashvatara Upanishad is an ancient Sanskrit text embedded in the Yajurveda.

alright so I rewatched 1-3, nothing new to report, still confused af
however one thing does come to mind, Booper talks to Phillip in 1-2 and in the credits is named "Phillip Gerard" not Phillip Jeffries as everyone seems to have assumed this whole time
also the pacing of the show is noticeably too slow, the entranced, mesmerized feeling when watching a new episode is not there on rewatch I'm sad to say. I think most of that comes from not knowing what will happen next.
by contrast, Inland Empire is just as captivating on subsequent viewings with the added bonus of tons of minor details you might have missed and coming away from it like you dreamt the whole thing

do a google search for "mullholland drive 10 questions / clues" - It is a list of 10 things from Lynch himself to help you understand. Remembering things has been a part of Lynch's work since he began. He's always been interested in how people perceive and then remember events they experience.
