>Urged on by an impulse which I cannot definitely analyse, I scrambled with difficulty down the rocks and stood on the gentler slope beneath, gazing into the Stygian deeps where no light had yet penetrated. All at once my attention was captured by a vast and singular object on the opposite slope, which rose steeply about an hundred yards ahead of me; an object that gleamed whitely in the newly bestowed rays of the ascending moon. That it was merely a gigantic piece of stone, I soon assured myself; but I was conscious of a distinct impression that its contour and position were not altogether the work of Nature. A closer scrutiny filled me with sensations I cannot express; for despite its enormous magnitude, and its position in an abyss which had yawned at the bottom of the sea since the world was young, I perceived beyond a doubt that the strange object was a well-shaped monolith whose massive bulk had known the workmanship and perhaps the worship of living and thinking creatures.

You faggots are a bunch of blind followers of Lynch who won't accept that "Twin Peaks: The Return" is a total disaster. This is the final proof that rebooting old series is a really *really* bad idea, since not even Lynch can do it right.

TPTR is not Twin Peaks: it's a bland, sad, and pathetic attempt of self-celebration in the form of an artificial continuation of an unfinished old work. So old that you, the creator, can't even remember correctly. Ironically, at a metalanguage level, the topics of this reboot perfectly reflect what reboots per se are: concretely, a doppelganger, product of a creative void. It's not Cooper who is lost here, it's David Lynch himself. Maybe this is his unconscientious talking...

I will tell you one thing, /tv/: after watching the first episode I was actually deceived for a moment, as I thought it was going to be great; maybe it was going to be more in the direction of FWWM, but I was OK with that. But then, after episode two I started to realize what was really going on here. At episode three, I started to cry and almost turned off my TV, as I finally understood what was happening here: it was the dead of one of the greatest artists of the 20th century.

I wouldn't say it's "required reading" but it still adds to your knowledge of the world and it's still good.

I hate the recent high school graduates in these threads that pretend to be le patrician experts and try to diminish Frost's contributions to Twin Peaks when a good portion of them probably didn't even watch Twin Peaks until after Secret History was even released.

I'm pretty sure this is a once in a lifetime type of thing in terms of seeing this in mainstream tv, I doubt we'll see it again.

The thing about being weird now is that everything is weird with rigid constraints, and if you wanna be "weird" you have to have a purpose, it has to serve some kind of point, even if that point is literally "dude sooo surreal!!" it's almost a pretentious thing where the point is that it is surreal and we're all supposed to accept that it is because that is why the scene exists.

Season 3 of Twin Peaks isn't pretentious, it isn't out to prove itself, it isn't adhering to a specific rules, they're doing what they want to do in a really honest way.

Smart television will continue to exists, far smarter shows than Twin Peaks are already out there, but in terms of pure experimental artistic and uncompromising vision, I think it'll take a long time for this to happen again in a mainstream light, it'll be out there in obscurity but I think it'll be a while until a television network decides to take a risk as big as Showtime did with this. I hope it pays off for them in the long run, shit fucking network that runs all their shows into the ground did something good for once.

this, Lynch is my favorite director ever by far but part of what makes Twin Peaks so interesting is that it's really the only time Lynch worked closely with somebody else, TP wouldn't have ever existed without Frost. People STILL don't realize that E8 is pure Frost in its content, pure Lynch in its execution
>>
>>84350712
For Twin Peaks to be pretentious it would actually have to claim to be something that it isn't, and this show clearly has an identity that is completely uncompromising so it is total idiocy to call it pretentious.

People like throwing that word around for things they don't understand and are intimidated by, the thing is Lynch isn't hard to understand at all, he isn't a calculating and pseudo-intellectual filmmaker. While this is legitimately the craziest thing I have ever seen on television, it is still tangibly rooted in the lore of the series, the way it is presented may be abstract and unconventional but you still leave that episode with a deeper understanding of the show, you may have more questions but you also got a lot of insight.

I think Inland Empire is Lynch's only work that is genuinely pretentious because it isn't rooted in anything and doesn't have any real value or payoff, it's just wacky Lynch shit for the sake of it but it has no substance and is just a retread of Mulholland Dr without being half as good.

I tend to agree. I'm not even sure it was "pretentious", but it definitely seemed whatever the filmmaking equivalent of word salad is. He just winged ideas and filmed them. It's interesting from that standpoint, but I don't think it's a very good "film". I'm a huge Lynch fan, and I know it's an unpopular opinion, but I genuinely think it's his worst film by far. I'm glad this season of Twin Peaks is redeeming my last impression of him.

>>84350995
I'd argue that the only essential parts of the missing pieces are the Phillip Jeffries (David Bowie) scene and the convenience store scene, both of these are two different complex scenes that are condensed into one absolute mess in the film. The content of these scenes are referenced CONSTANTLY in S3 and seem to be extremely important but it's nigh impossible to gather anything from the fucking mess that they were turned into in the final cut. I adore FWWM but I will never in my life understand why they cut those scenes, it really hurts the film.

>>
>>84351031
I agree that it's his worse film and I'm extremely thankful it didn't end up being the last thing he ever did.
>>84351041
I think that's bullshit. Inland Empire, to me, felt just like a complete and total rehash of the whole point of Mulholland Dr (the hollywood actress angle) and the storytelling style of Mulholland Dr but completely and utterly lacked the substance AND style. You can look at every aspect of Mulholland Dr and things start to piece together in many different ways varying on interpretations, and you can clearly make out the value of each different scene. It has a fucking payoff to deciphering it, and the characters and the relationships between them are great, especially the contrast between their dream counterparts and real selves. Mulholland Dr also has wonderfully crafted scenes like Silencio and amazing cinematography while Inland Empire looks like fucking dog shit and has very few standout moments.

In the beginning of season 3 the giant says something about BOB

So basically the Giant is saying that evil is creeping in to the white lodge and Giant wants to get rid of BOB.

>"Woodcutters From Fiery Ships"

>David Lynch was to team with anime producer Bandai and two Japanese partners to produce a digital adventure to be released on DVD-ROM, the Internet, and in novelization form. The project was tentatively entitled "Woodcutters From Fiery Ships".

>Unfortunately, the project never came about. Lynch says it was "blocked from the get-go." The game was going to be a "conundrum thing.. a beautiful kind of place to put yourself. You try to make a little bit of mystery and a bit of a story, but you want it to be able to bend back upon itself and get lost ... Ceratin events have happened in a bungalow which is behind another in Los Angeles. And then suddenly the woodcutters arrive and they take the man who we think has witnessed these events, and their ship is... uh, silver, like a 30`s kind of ship, and the fuel is logs. And they smoke pipes."

Lol, he's Lynch. Also, ratings are meaningless. The show was filmed as early as 2015. I assume Showtime and Lynch agreed to a contract about that time.
But up till this point I was thinking he really had a tiny, limited budget due to all of those CGI oddities. Then there was the Gulfstream jet scene which turned out to be stock footage from an advertisement. Given the reputation that both Twin Peaks and David Lynch have., it's fair to assume that some actors agreed to participate or have a cameo pro bono. The same goes for some of those musical acts, including Nine Inch Nails.

It's a huge critical success so far, too. I think awards season will really determine Showtime's willingness to greenlight a potential followup. It would all hinge on Lynch's desire, obviously, but everyone else involved seems entranced by Twin Peaks again.

Lynch is usually more definite than that, too. Everyone involved seemed to be sucked right back in, and various actors said they would absolutely be up for more, including Kyle. Before you open your mouth again to say anything:

"These various groups did not share a universal style, but rather were connected by their rejection of idealism, stale artistic and intellectual conventions and modern society’s unchecked embrace of ‘rationalism’ and ‘progress’.

They condemned the nationalist and capitalist values that led to the cataclysm of the war and employed unorthodox techniques, performances and provocations to jolt the rest of society into self-awareness.

The absurdity of Dada activities created a mirror of the absurdity in the world around them. Dada was anti-aesthetic, anti-rational and anti-idealistic. Key figures such as Marcel Duchamp disturbed the art world with his ready-mades such as Fountain (which is simply a urinal). Dada’s challenge to conventional notions of ‘high art’ radically impacted later developments in conceptual art, performance art and post-modernism among others....

Surrealism was characterized by a profound disillusionment with and condemnation of the Western emphasis on logic and reason. However, Breton wanted to create something more programmatic out of Dada’s nonsensical and seemingly unfocused activities. Consequently, Surrealist works were bound up with the psychoanalytical theories of Sigmund Freud relating to the irrational and instinctual drives of the unconscious.

Through the use of unconventional techniques such as automatism and frottage, Surrealist artists attempted to tap into the dream-world of the subliminal mind, visualizing its secrets and mysteries.

Some of these artists include René Magritte, Man Ray, Max Ernst and Salvador Dalí. In its intention to undermine established values, the oppositional stance of both Dada and Surrealism served as an important precursor to late 20th century artistic developments such as Neo-Dada, Nouveau Réalisme and Institutional Critique while still inspiring artists today.

Memories are blurry as always, I'm bad at remembering dreams, but i remember a semi-transparent creature, i could only see his general shape while the body had like a magnifying glass effect on what was behind it. It was growing huge, i was looking at it from the second floor of whatever building (like an interior balcony) and it basically reached my height. The head was bald but had some sort of protuberance around the mouth, it basically reminded me of the experiment. I feel like i tried to talk it out from doing... whatever, and maybe the giant was there, but again i can't remember shit

I'm not counting on it to happen, but in the back of my mind I want nothing more in the world than for it to actually happen.

It'd be the only thing that could top episode 8 so far

>Not sure how they went from being physical entities in the '50s to ghostlike figures in the present day though.
As I see it, the Woodsmen are a more primordial spirit which manifest from energy or emotional trauma. The nuclear bomb allowed them to take corporeal form in the 50s in great numbers but now in 2017 can manifest only as ghosts in specific circumstances.
